## About Ansys Sherlock
Ansys Sherlock is the only reliability physics-based electronics design tool that provides fast and accurate life predictions of electronic hardware at the component, board and system levels in early stage design. Using reliability physics, Sherlock reduces expensive build-and-test iterations by virtually running thermal cycling, power-temperature cycling, vibration, shock, bending, thermal derating, accelerated life, natural frequency, CAF and more so you can adjust designs in near real-time and achieve qualification in one round. With Sherlock you will: • Predict product failure early in the design process • Mitigate thermal, mechanical and manufacturing risks • Avoid re-design and re-test • Reduce warranty returns in the field by calculating time to failure • Translate ECAD to FEA in minutes • Easily facilitate design file transfer with a locked IP model Unlike any other tool on the market, Sherlock uses files created by your design team to build 3D models of electronic assemblies for trace modeling, post-processing of finite element analysis (FEA) and reliability predictions. This early insight translates to almost immediate identification of components with potential failure risks and gives you the ability to quickly adjust and retest designs. Sherlock capabilities include: • Solder fatigue analysis • Thermal-mechanical analysis • Shock and vibration analysis • Plated through hole (PTH) fatigue • Conductive anodic filament (CAF) • Analysis PCB/BGA • Substrate stackup design for manufacturability (DfM) • Conformal coating/potting • CAE interface • Thermal derating • Trace modeling • MTBF, empirical handbook MTBF, reliability physics • Ceramic capacitor time to failure • Electrolytic capacitor time to failure • Integrated circuit wearout • Heatsink editor • DFMEA Libraries – Sherlock's over 500,000 parts library provides embedded databases easily expanded by users • Parts Library • Packages Library • Materials Library • Laminates Library • Solders Library • Glass Style Library https://www.ansys.com/products/structures/ansys-sherlock

It is not possible to perform durability calculations neither at the PCBA leval nor the product level (it indeed does not account for the number of identical packages on the board etc.). Moreover, the assessment of solder joint durability under vibration loading is not accurate enough to consider quantitative results. It is however a good tool to make comparisoons between different designs.

  ### 33. A Sherlock user of 6 years

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Jon Fea P. | Reliability, Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** January 27, 2019

**What do you like best about Ansys Sherlock?**

Sherlock has the most updated reliability physic concept built-in, provide accurate results at the early phase of the design. It even can help the engineer to do reliability growth before the first design prototype release. Moreover, the tool developers have a strong background in reliability physic research and study. The most thing I like is the DfR Solutions invest more resources in improving the Sherlock and try to make it easy to use.

**What do you dislike about Ansys Sherlock?**

In the earlier version, the software has many bugs. The later version after 5.0 seems to be more reliable, but still has minor bugs observed from one version to another. Besides, the user needs to have well-planning in doing data entry to Sherlock; any inaccurate data entry will cause the simulated results confusing.

**Recommendations to others considering Ansys Sherlock:**

Sherlock can help you fill up the gap that was not covered by the traditional reliability prediction and lab testing.

**What problems is Ansys Sherlock solving and how is that benefiting you?**

A more accurate reliability prediction results that were helping company finance to allocate the right amount of money for product warranty reserve.

ODB import feature makes it very easy to create initial model with most of the necessary information. Parts library makes it easy to apply previously collected data. Thermal Cycling analysis runs super fast. The strain based component of damage predicted in the Random Vibration analysis solver is a huge value-add. We currently have no other means to assess such damage and have been able to predict failure modes that would (or had) otherwise been missed.

**What do you dislike about Ansys Sherlock?**

Adding detail can be difficult. Hard to model mechanical parts/interface with external FEA. Parts List management is partially automated but doesn't always work if there are user input values overwriting library values. Board outline editor is painful. Natural Frequency analysis runs every time Random Vibration runs (i.e. can't just use saved results if applicable) adding unnecessary computation time .

**What problems is Ansys Sherlock solving and how is that benefiting you?**

We currently use Sherlock to avoid costly and lengthy thermal cycling testing by using analysis to demonstrate compliance. We also use it as a design tool for developing products to meet high shock and vibration environments. We've had very good agreement with test data to date.

  ### 35. It's a useful tool to perform PCB Reliability Assessments in an early design stage.

**What do you like best about Ansys Sherlock?**

The mechanical simulations like Natural Frequency and Strain Gauge analysis are being tested using physical samples, getting a good correlation.

**What do you dislike about Ansys Sherlock?**

The CAF need post-analysis to determine the real risks. The are some mechanical restrictions for modeling sub-assemblies.

**What problems is Ansys Sherlock solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Perform design changes in early design phase saving costs, mainly performed on the mechanical portion.
