[Is there a free or low-cost SMS marketing tool that actually works for small teams, or do you need a paid plan to get real features?](/discussions/is-there-a-free-or-low-cost-sms-marketing-tool-that-actually-works-for-small-teams-or-do-you-need-a-paid-plan-to-get-real-features)

Is there a free or low-cost SMS marketing tool that actually works for small teams, or do you need a paid plan to get real features? This question comes up a lot for early-stage businesses and nonprofits that want to test SMS as a channel before committing to a monthly platform fee. From reviews in the [SMS marketing software](https://www.g2.com/categories/sms-marketing) category with a budget lens:

- [**SlickText**](https://www.g2.com/products/slicktext/reviews) **:** Starts with a free plan that covers enough for a small list. Reviewers describe the keyword campaigns and basic automation as usable without upgrading, though the plan jump when volume grows is steep.
- [**Textedly**](https://www.g2.com/products/textedly/reviews) **:** Offers a trial and entry-level plans that small teams describe as good enough to validate the channel before committing. Reviewers running under a few thousand contacts say it covers what they need without paying for features built for much larger operations.
- [**Omnisend**](https://www.g2.com/products/omnisend/reviews) **:** The free tier includes SMS credits alongside email sends. For small ecommerce brands that want to test both channels, reviewers describe it as one of the more generous free offerings in this category.
- [**Podium**](https://www.g2.com/products/podium/reviews) **:** Better suited for small businesses that want SMS tied to customer communication rather than just marketing blasts. Reviews from local businesses describe it as worth the cost once it replaces a patchwork of other tools.

If you started with a free or low-cost SMS tool, at what point did the limitations push you to upgrade? And was it worth it?

My honest experience with free tier SMS tools is that they're useful for proving the channel exists and not much else. Has anyone actually run a real programme on an entry-level plan rather than just a test campaign?

[Attentive vs Klaviyo vs Postscript: which SMS platform is actually worth it for a DTC brand doing over $5M in revenue?](/discussions/attentive-vs-klaviyo-vs-postscript-which-sms-platform-is-actually-worth-it-for-a-dtc-brand-doing-over-5m-in-revenue)

Attentive vs Klaviyo vs Postscript: which SMS platform is actually worth it for a DTC brand doing over $5M in revenue? At that scale, the platform decision stops being about basic features and becomes about how much revenue the SMS channel actually contributes and whether the tool provides enough visibility to optimize it.

We're looking at how DTC brands at this revenue level are making this call and what they'd change. What we're hoping to find:

- Attribution that connects SMS sends to actual revenue without a lot of manual reporting
- Segmentation that draws on real purchase behavior, not just list demographics
- A team or support structure that actively helps performance improve, not just answers support tickets

From the [SMS marketing software](https://www.g2.com/categories/sms-marketing) category:

- [**Attentive**](https://www.g2.com/products/attentive/reviews) **:** Enterprise and mid-market DTC reviewers consistently credit the customer success team as genuinely invested in performance. One reviewer described it as a partnership rather than a vendor relationship. The two-way conversation tools and zero-party data collection are also highlighted as useful for personalization at scale.
- [**Klaviyo**](https://www.g2.com/products/klaviyo/reviews) **:** The strongest case for Klaviyo at this revenue level is when email and SMS are both active. Having both channels in one platform means the behavioral data powering segmentation is unified, which makes abandoned cart, winback, and loyalty sequences sharper. Reviewers describe clear ROI visibility through the analytics.
- [**Postscript**](https://www.g2.com/products/postscript/reviews) **:** Built for Shopify specifically, which means the store data integration is deeper than what general SMS platforms offer. DTC reviewers describe the Shopify sync as cleaner for abandoned cart and purchase triggers, with less setup time to get flows running accurately.

If you've made this switch at the $5M-plus level, what did your SMS revenue look like before and after? And is there a feature or workflow that made the biggest difference?

At that revenue level the attribution clarity is what actually matters for this comparison. Which one makes it easiest to see what SMS is contributing without having to build the reporting yourself?

[What's the best SMS marketing tool for small businesses under 10,000 contacts that don't want to pay enterprise pricing?](/discussions/what-s-the-best-sms-marketing-tool-for-small-businesses-under-10-000-contacts-that-don-t-want-to-pay-enterprise-pricing)

What's the best SMS marketing tool for small businesses under 10,000 contacts that don't want to pay enterprise pricing? From the small business grid in the [SMS marketing software](https://www.g2.com/categories/sms-marketing) category, here are the tools that score well without the enterprise price tag:

1. [**SlickText**](https://www.g2.com/products/slicktext/reviews) (4.8 stars, 1,800+ reviews) **:** Best for small teams that want keyword campaigns and automations without touching a developer. Reviewers describe getting full functionality at a price that scales with contact volume rather than charging for features they don't need yet.
2. [**Textedly**](https://www.g2.com/products/textedly/reviews) (4.6 stars, 1,300+ reviews) **:** Best for getting campaigns out the door fast. Small business reviewers describe the setup as something a solo marketer can handle, and the high satisfaction score reflects how well it works for teams without dedicated SMS staff.
3. [**Attentive**](https://www.g2.com/products/attentive/reviews) (4.5 stars, 1,300+ reviews) **:** Best for small ecommerce brands that are growing fast and want a platform that scales with them. Reviewers note that the pricing makes more sense once the list and revenue grow to match it.
4. [**Podium**](https://www.g2.com/products/podium/reviews) (4.5 stars, 2,000+ reviews) **:** Best for local and service businesses that want SMS alongside review management. Small business reviewers describe it as a good fit for retail, dental, and home services contexts where customer communication spans more than just marketing.
5. [**Omnisend**](https://www.g2.com/products/omnisend/reviews) (4.6 stars, 1,200+ reviews) **:** Best for small ecommerce businesses already using email. The combined email and SMS plans tend to work out cheaper than paying separately for two platforms, and the automation handles both channels from one place.

Which of these have you used? And what made you stick with it or switch?

The pricing structure question is worth thinking through early, especially if you're in a growth phase. Modelling out what costs look like at a higher contact volume before you sign up saves a lot of friction later.
