What is Unitrends Backup and Recovery, and what problem is it built to solve?

Unitrends Backup and Recovery is used to back up and restore server data, helping organizations recover files and systems after data loss, hardware problems, or other disruptions. Teams use it across physical and virtual environments, with local and off-site backup workflows.

What languages does Unitrends Backup and Recovery support?

Unitrends Backup and Recovery supports 2 languages: English and French.

What company sizes and industries is Unitrends Backup and Recovery the best fit for?

Unitrends Backup and Recovery is most represented among smaller and mid-market organizations, with users also appearing across several industries. The strongest clusters include:
  • Small businesses: Organizations with 50 or fewer employees.
  • Mid-market companies: Organizations with 51–1,000 employees.
  • Information technology: IT services and related technology organizations.
  • Education: Primary and secondary schools, higher education, and education management.
  • Healthcare and government: Healthcare providers and government administration organizations.

How long does it take to implement Unitrends Backup and Recovery across a team?

Implementation time varies with the environment and setup, but getting to go-live in under a month is the most common experience. Other reported timelines include several months, particularly when deployments involve more configuration or support.

What customer support options does Unitrends Backup and Recovery provide, and how do users find the overall support experience?

Support is available by phone, email, and chat, alongside self-service resources; live-representative support is available 24/7. The experience can be very helpful, with users valuing knowledgeable engineers and responsive assistance, though delays and inconsistent resolution of more complex issues are also reported.

What is the experience like for teams switching to Unitrends Backup and Recovery from another tool?

Moving to Unitrends Backup and Recovery from older tape-based systems or backup products such as Backup Exec, Veeam, Acronis, and ShadowProtect is often driven by unreliable backups, cumbersome administration, or a need for broader recovery and off-site protection. After the transition, teams describe less manual work and easier centralized management, with automated backups and recovery options replacing tape handling or fragmented workflows. Setup can be straightforward, though complex environments may need extra configuration and support.

What features or capabilities could make Unitrends Backup and Recovery even more useful?

The most useful improvements would make routine administration clearer and give teams more control over backup operations. Commonly requested areas include:
  • Simpler navigation and recovery workflows: Make the interface and restore steps more intuitive, especially for less frequent tasks.
  • More flexible reporting and diagnostics: Improve report customization and provide clearer explanations when backup jobs fail.
  • Smoother administration and scaling: Reduce the effort involved in agent updates, storage planning, and managing growing environments.

Is Unitrends Backup and Recovery considered safe and secure for handling data?

Users value having backups available for recovery after ransomware incidents, accidental deletion, or system failures, and some describe encryption and separate backup copies as important safeguards. Security confidence still depends on reliable backup status and sound access controls; concerns include authentication and permissions, reliance on cloud-based management, and cases where backup or alerting information has not provided enough reassurance.

"Pricey but Worthwhile"
3/5
What do you like best about Unitrends Backup and Recovery?

Granular level of control over the methodology of how backups can be taken is excellent. The overhead of the client is extremely minimal and takes little in resources OR drive space. Excellent management interface on the local server as well. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about Unitrends Backup and Recovery?

Single file recovery is a little bit hokey and could be better laid out - it takes way too many steps to navigate/drill down the file you are looking for through the web interface. Less than clear on how to rename the SMB share as well as account credentials for access to it so that you can grab the local client installer from the backup server. Updates are crazy frequent. "Easy, Standardized Image Backups with Simple History Review and Smart Alerts"
4.5/5
What do you like best about Unitrends Backup and Recovery?

We primarily use this for image based backups. Setting a single standard that works for all clients makes implementation super easy. Reviewing the history of backups is simple. I can easily set alert thresholds for when I actually care to be notified. The recovery is also simple with very few steps. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about Unitrends Backup and Recovery?

I've had issues with backups stopping or failing, requiring full reinstalls and/or reboots which interrupts some clients, making it harder to manage. Whenever you need to start from scratch, I think I remember needing to abandon the backup chain. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

"Reliable Backups and Strong Recovery, but Admin Tasks and Reporting Need Streamlining"
3/5
What do you like best about Unitrends Backup and Recovery?

Unitrends Backup and Recovery provides a centralized way to manage backup operations while maintaining flexibility across different environments and recovery scenarios. The recovery options are one of the stronger aspects of the platform because they allow restoration at multiple levels without requiring overly complicated workflows. We also appreciate the monitoring and alerting visibility, which helps identify failed jobs or storage concerns before they become larger issues. The platform has generally been reliable for maintaining backup consistency across physical and virtual systems. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about Unitrends Backup and Recovery?

Some administrative tasks and recovery workflows can feel more time-consuming than expected, especially when working through larger environments or less common restore situations. The interface can occasionally feel dated in certain sections, and reporting customization could be more flexible for operational review or customer-facing summaries. Initial configuration and long-term storage planning may also require more tuning than newer cloud-native backup platforms. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about Unitrends Backup and Recovery?

Some areas of the interface can feel dated and navigating certain recovery or configuration tasks may take more steps than expected. "Unitrends provides excellent solutions for backup and recovery"
3.5/5
What do you like best about Unitrends Backup and Recovery?

Unitrends provides a very intuitive interface for backup and recovery solutions. It is easy to setup, review, and manage. The platform is very solid, with regular updates. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about Unitrends Backup and Recovery?

Kaseya, ever since Kaseya acquired Unitrends the support platform seems to have changed to offshore support. They used to offer fast helpful support over the phone with a quick 1 minute verification, and now there is twenty-to-thirty minutes of verifying whether our account has paid for support, then finally speaking to a person whose English is not their first, or even second language. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

"Unitrends has been an efficient backup solution"
4/5
What do you like best about Unitrends Backup and Recovery?

The efficiency of the deduplication and compression has always impressed and the backups also seemed to complete reasonable expediently too Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about Unitrends Backup and Recovery?

We found that while the solution was effective the step-up from one appliance to another when reaching storage limits is a significant jump, and overall the solution was also expensive compared to software-only solutions Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What stands out most about Unitrends Backup and Recovery is its all-in-one approach—it combines backup, recovery, and ransomware protection in a single platform. It’s easy to manage, offers reliable and fast recovery options, and provides strong automation and reporting, which helps ensure data is protected without requiring constant manual oversight. What do you dislike about Unitrends Backup and Recovery?

One downside of Unitrends Backup and Recovery is that the interface can feel a bit dated and unintuitive, especially for new users. "Reliable Backup but they aren't taking VMware replacements seriously."
3.5/5
What do you like best about Unitrends Backup and Recovery?

We use Unitrends with our current VMWare implementation. It integrates well to back up the entire hypervisors. I like using Unitrends Backup and Recovery as it offers a user-friendly interface. The deduplication feature is really handy for saving storage space. I appreciate the backup copy to the cloud as it plays a huge role in ensuring business continuity. The instant recovery feature is very valuable because it allows us to launch the servers at any point in time in the past, which is crucial for our operations. Overall, I find the system reliable. We've been running Unitrends for about 13 years and it saved us several times. We were given a good price for the full product with support which makes it worth it. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about Unitrends Backup and Recovery?

Unitrends doesn't fully support Proxmox, which is essential for us going forward. We are looking to either change the backup solution or go with another virtualization solution. We might have to go with Microsoft instead of Proxmox, which is not ideal. Support can be hit or miss, with some engineers being qualified and others refusing to properly do their jobs. "Reliable Backups with Some Virtual Limitations"
4/5
What do you like best about Unitrends Backup and Recovery?

I like that Unitrends Backup and Recovery works very consistently with very few problems. I use a virtual Unitrends appliance, and it reliably lets me know when there are updates, so I can keep everything up to date. I find restorations fairly easy to set up, and I appreciate the ability to restore to a separate virtual server rather than overwriting the existing one. It's great that I can set up retention policies across all the backups or have different policies for each server. I also appreciate that the backups happen smoothly with little or minimal intervention. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about Unitrends Backup and Recovery?

With the virtual appliance version, I find it frustrating that in a virtual environment, where you can normally move virtual servers from one physical host to another or take snapshots of virtual machines, you are not allowed to do that with the virtual Unitrends appliance, as it will corrupt things. In a VMware environment, the snapshot process is so good and reliable, you can move almost any virtual server at any time. But you cannot do that with the Unitrends virtual appliance virtual server. It would be nice if the system did a better job of notifying before the disk space becomes an issue. Recovering from a system where you run out of space interrupts backups and requires Unitrends support team assistance. The initial setup was a bit challenging, as we ended up having to go through the process a couple of times before we got the system working solidly. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.
