"Promising Features Hampered by Unpolished UI"

What do you like best about Plane?

I love that Plane is self-hosted and has almost all features needed for a basic task management application. I also appreciate that you can edit whatever you like and create personal API tokens. Being able to self-host is important for managing sensitive data, and the personal API tokens allow me to integrate Plane with other applications like GitHub, which automatically closes tasks when a PR is closed. What do you dislike about Plane?

I think Plane in general is very unpolished. The UI lags very much, the application won't load until the cache is cleared which was so bad we had to make a custom UI that proxies the application on the frontend because the JS wasn't loading. There are certain features such as an image viewer that are not present in the application, so we need to download the image in order to view it. The UI is also really confusing, where an average Joe or a project manager would have difficulty assigning permissions or managing the application. I think the UI needs an overhaul in general. The main improvements needed would be allowing for preview of attached screenshots, fixing loading of the latest assets such as JS which is vital to the application, allowing for more events on the webhook, and a simpler UI. What do you like best about Plane?

Plane hits the sweet spot between flexibility and simplicity. We're a small team juggling multiple projects across design, dev, and ops, and Plane has helped us bring structure without the usual complexity that comes with project management tools. The Pages feature is a quiet hero, we use it for documentation and context sharing right next to our tasks. Also, onboarding new team members has been a breeze thanks to the clean UI. "Plane became our management tool due to its great UX and vast toolset"

What do you like best about Plane?

We needed a project management software that was simple but allowed us to easily trace the tasks done by our product, development and quality assurance teams. This was easily handled by plane and in recent versions it has even facilitated our progress reports with its newest charts' features!

In my experience, Jira was too much, while asana was too simple, and clickup too convoluted... Plane's UI, on the other hand, has the most amount of information possible in a simple and beautiful UI. Our company uses it on an everyday basis and we count with all the features we need: time tracking, task estimation, traceability matrix features, gantt diagram visualization, OpenIDC integration, an API that allows us to expand upon it, heck, we even host our own database so we can create anything we want with said data.

The price isn't that steep, yet it presents a really competitive solution for project management because of the fact that it combines several software use cases into a single product, and the learning curve is practically null. Besides, the support I've received from both the discord server (both from the community and the company's collaborators) has been pretty efficient and warm, so I'm really happy with this software overall. What do you dislike about Plane?

To be honest, I would love it if the company maintained better communication; the sunset of Plane One was definitely unexpected to me, and since I was on board with said plan, it would be great to know if there will be a way to continue with said plan in the mid-term future. What problems is Plane solving and how is that benefiting you?

- We are no longer using a software to manage our kanban tasks and a different solution in order to create our gantt diagrams.

- Due to the fact that we self-host our database, we can easily expand Plane since we can simply develop other applications to modify or visualize the data.

What problems is Plane solving and how is that benefiting you?

First time I tried jira I was like: "Man there's so much, everywhere! And why has everything weird names !?"

While looking for an alternative, I saw a fireship video recommending plane as a free alternative to jira. I went on and tried it thinking it wouldn't be any better than other tools but still gave it a chance.

Damn was I wrong. The UI was so minimalistic and refined. I had everything I needed to plan and automate my project and the best part was:

- No per-tool multi-subscription plans

- Complete customization

- Sharing custom tasks views

- Integrated wiki and pages

So much is possible with the free tier already, it's really more accessible to everyone.

Plane's team is also very rapid and ingaged in user experience. Overall it's a less agressive and more pleasant experience than huge and over-complicated project management softwares.

This isn’t just a checkbox feature—it’s seamless to deploy (Docker‑ready, Kubernetes‑friendly) and integrates with my company’s existing identity and monitoring tools.

A UI That Hits Every Mark

Plane’s interface feels fresh without sacrificing familiarity. Task lists, boards, timelines and calendars are all laid out with generous whitespace, intuitive drag‑and‑drop interactions.

Comprehensive Feature Set

From nested subtasks and custom fields to dependencies, milestones, and multi‑project portfolios, Plane has a toolkit that rivals any heavyweight in this category. I especially appreciate:

• Workspace and Project Views, which let me slice my task backlog however I like.

• Built‑in time tracking with per‑task timers and reports.

• Problem: With cloud‑only tools, I worried about sudden pricing changes, API restrictions, or data portability headaches.

• How Plane Helps: Self‑hosting (there is a cloud option available) gives me full control over my data, backups, and uptime policies. I can keep my projects on‑premises, behind our own VPN, and integrate with existing identity and monitoring systems—no more “black‑box” SaaS concerns.

2. Fragmented Toolchains & Context Switching

• Problem: In Asana (and other platforms), I often needed a separate time‑tracker, a different tool for docs, yet another for dashboards—and toggling between them broke my flow.

• How Plane Helps: Plane bundles tasks, nested subtasks, time‑tracking, automations, and dashboards into one coherent interface. Fewer windows means fewer interruptions and a cleaner “single pane of glass” for project work.

3. Sluggish Performance at Scale

• Problem: Large Asana workspaces can lag—loading boards with hundreds of cards or switching between portfolios takes noticeable time.

"Solid project management tool with a short learning curve"

What do you like best about Plane?

I needed to quickly enroll ±25 people in a project management tool, and Plane did the job.

My primary concern was that most users aren't very technical, so I was looking for a solution with not too many bells and whistles, or at least a way to hide them from most users. Plane helped me with that, and a complete deployment with migration from a previous solution took less than 2 weeks.
