What is ownCloud, and what problem is it built to solve?

ownCloud is an open-source, self-hosted file sync and sharing solution. It helps individuals and organizations store, manage, and share files on their own servers rather than relying on third-party cloud services, while supporting collaboration and access across devices.

What languages does ownCloud support?

ownCloud supports 19 languages, including Arabic, Chinese (Simplified), Croatian, Czech, English, and others.

What company sizes and industries is ownCloud the best fit for?

ownCloud’s strongest reviewer-reported fit spans smaller and mid-sized organizations, with users also represented in larger enterprises. Positive experiences appear across a varied set of industries, especially technology and software-related fields, education, marketing, and accounting.
  • Company size: Small businesses and mid-market organizations are the most represented, with enterprise users also present.
  • Industries: Information technology and services, computer software, education, marketing and advertising, and accounting are among the most represented.

How long does it take to implement ownCloud across a team?

Implementation time varies with the deployment and the work needed to configure the server. Reported timelines cluster most strongly around deployments completed in a day or less, with some teams taking longer.
Time to go live Relative frequency
Less than one day Most common
Less than one month Also common
One to three months Reported less often

What customer support options does ownCloud provide, and how do users find the overall support experience?

Support includes chat and email/help desk, as well as phone support and 24/7 access to a live representative. The experience is mixed: users describe helpful technical assistance, while others note that self-hosting can leave setup and maintenance work to an internal administrator, and community help can feel limited.

What is the experience like for teams switching to ownCloud from another tool?

Moving to ownCloud is often motivated by a desire to keep files on infrastructure the organization controls, reduce reliance on public cloud services, or manage sharing and permissions differently. Prior tools include hosted file-storage services such as Dropbox, Google Drive, and OneDrive, as well as FTP and other file-sharing systems. Users value the control and privacy of a self-hosted setup, though getting the server configured and maintaining it can make the transition more involved.

What features or capabilities could make ownCloud even more useful?

ownCloud could be more useful with smoother day-to-day navigation and stronger tools for finding files. Users also point to opportunities to improve collaboration and the reliability of mobile and sync workflows.
  • Make administration and navigation clearer: Simplify the interface and settings, and provide more approachable setup guidance.
  • Improve search: Add stronger search filters and make it easier to locate content within files.
  • Strengthen collaboration: Expand in-browser document editing and support for teams working on the same files.
  • Polish mobile and syncing: Improve mobile performance and make syncing more dependable, especially for larger files.

Is ownCloud considered safe and secure for handling data?

ownCloud’s self-hosted model is a meaningful part of its security appeal: organizations can choose where files are stored and manage access themselves. Users also value encryption and permission controls, but that control comes with responsibility—secure configuration, updates, and ongoing server maintenance matter, and some users have encountered security or reliability concerns. It can suit sensitive-data workflows when the organization has the expertise to operate it carefully.
