# What are the best owned media platforms for independent creators building audiences without losing ownership?

As someone who has been an independent creator, I’ve found that the whole point of owned media is not handing your audience to someone else's algorithm. I've been researching which platforms in the Owned Media category actually let you keep control of your list and your content, based on what creators say in their reviews rather than the marketing.

Ghost: Reviewers specifically value owning their audience and paying no revenue cut on premium subscribers, with the option to self-host for full control. The flip side is that self-hosting and deep customization require some technical comfort.

beehiiv: Creators describe building and owning a newsletter audience without a media company behind them, with growth and monetization built in. Import and migration of existing lists is the friction reviewers mention most.

Substack: Reviewers highlight direct control of the subscriber relationship with no intermediaries and easy audience growth through recommendations. The ongoing 10% fee and thin customization are the trade-offs. (Off the current Grid but a valid category product; small review base.)

Patreon: Gives creators a direct, membership-based relationship with fans and recurring income, which several describe as more sustainable than relying on social platforms. Reviewers note the creator still has to drive discovery themselves.

So, when you think about "not losing ownership," what matters most to you: portability of your email list, keeping all your revenue, or self-hosting the whole thing? Curious which platform actually delivered that in practice.

Portability of the email list would matter most to me because that is the piece I’d want to take with me no matter what platform changes. Self-hosting and zero revenue share are valuable, but being able to export the audience cleanly is what really preserves ownership.

### Comment 2

Portability is probably the clearest test of ownership, but I’d extend it beyond exporting email addresses. If leaving means losing subscriber history, segments, payment status, or other useful context, you technically own the list but still face meaningful lock-in. Has anyone migrated away from Ghost, beehiiv, or Substack and found the exported data genuinely sufficient to restart elsewhere?

Portability of the list, easily. Revenue share is a cost you can calculate and decide to accept, and self-hosting is a preference. Losing the ability to export your subscribers is the only one of the three that can't be reversed, so it's the thing worth checking before committing rather than after. Ghost and beehiiv both get credit from reviewers on exactly that point.

I switched off a platform where I couldn't export my list without jumping through hoops, and that was the moment I realized "ownership" means something pretty specific. It's not just about posting on your own domain, it's about whether you can actually leave if you want to.
