We migrated all our projects from different tools to Jama, and we are very satisfied with both the product itself and the responsive communication and support from the Jama team. In particular, Mr. Preston Mitchell played a key role in helping us with the migration by importing ReqIF and even Excel files smoothly. What we appreciate most is the flexibility to customize our own workflows and represent them through statuses that we can update easily. The locking feature, along with detailed activity tracking for each item, is extremely helpful. The review feature is also very robust, which makes collaboration and collecting feedback much more efficient. In addition, exporting and importing data is straightforward and highly customizable. Another feature we find especially valuable is the filtering functionality, which makes it much easier to navigate and manage requirements. Overall, the tool feels fast, fluid, and intuitive to use, and it provides a consistently great experience for requirements management. **What do you dislike about Jama Connect?** Like any management tool, Jama Connect has some downsides, but honestly, I’ve noticed very few, maybe two or three areas that could be improved: Relationships/Links Between Items Currently, the relationships between items are limited to only two cases: upstream and downstream. It would be helpful to have additional relationship types or naming options for items on the same level (for example, linking test cases to other test cases without forcing one to be upstream or downstream). Review Process – Status Update After Closing In the review process, once reviewers approve or reject items, the moderator has to close the review. Unfortunately, after closing, the status of all items defaults to “approved,” regardless of whether they were actually approved or declined. It would be much better if, after the moderator closes the review, the item statuses could automatically update based on the majority decision or the final outcome from the reviewers’ feedback. Review Process – Handling of Approved Items in New Revisions When a new revision is published, the previously approved items are still shown in the review, and reviewers must go through and approve them again, which can be a bit annoying. It would be great if already approved/accepted items were either hidden in subsequent revisions or kept with their approved status so reviewers don’t have to reapprove them unnecessarily. **What problems is Jama Connect solving and how is that benefiting you?** Jama Connect has really helped us streamline our requirements management process in many ways. One of the biggest benefits for us is that, after migrating all our projects, we now have everything centralized in one place. This makes it much easier to manage and navigate our entire project database and specifications. It also provides great flexibility and fluidity in handling different sets of requirements, whether software, hardware, architecture, test cases, FMEA, or other types of specifications. I appreciate that everyone receives updates automatically because everything is online, eliminating the need for manual pushing or committing changes. The customer service experience is something I really like. It is efficient and very helpful, providing assistance to a great level of detail. Additionally, I found the initial setup to be intuitive and I love the well-designed, user-friendly UI, especially with my previous experience with tools like Doors, Jira, and Cameo. The API offers a great level of granularity for integration with internal tools. Integration of AI in Jama is in development, but already the first tools are quite useful. I was in the past a great advocate for automatic test case generation and it is amazing to see how Jama has taken big steps towards this. **What do you dislike about Jama Connect?** The export to Word, Excel, PDF is not working so well. Duplicating requirements is not optimal. Changing item types is not optimal. Deriving statistics is not optimal. Jama Connect: Easy Reviews, Strong Traceability, and Amazing Support - with Ease of Use Suggestions **Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars **Reviewed by:** Sheila K. | Senior Project Engineer, Enterprise (> 1000 emp.) **Reviewed Date:** July 29, 2026 **What do you like best about Jama Connect?** Jama Connect is essentially a full-service, full-featured requirements management and traceability platform. It’s easy to use overall, and what I like most is its native review workflow and built-in traceability capabilities. The user interface is user friendly - except the recent change in the search for new project. Where you can only type a couple characters before the search starts. The performance is also very good. It still takes while to create a baseline - sometimes it takes long enough that I create request a second baseline before the pop-up shows. The only other performance issue is in the review activity log. It takes a very long time to pull that up. We currently use TaskTop for most our integrations. We will start using JCI in 1 month and I'm hoping use it for Jira and ReqIf integrations. The support team is amazing. They are highly available and informative is all aspects of needing assistance for myself as org admin, and for team members when they have questions I cannot answer. As for AI, the test case intelligence is very good. The feedback from the team is that it is helpful even in the situations where the requirement is complex or not written well. The JCA has been clumsy. However, an update has been made that, I hope solves that problem. I have not been able to look at that yet where the refinement is posted in the current requirement. I'll make a quick comment about the pricing - but my head doesn't really think in macroeconomics. I firmly believe the ROI of the tool is high- but I'm not good at placing monetary value on that. **What do you dislike about Jama Connect?** The only downside is that it is difficult to get the team up and running on AI capabilities. I mentioned in the last post that the JCA requirements advisor has been clumsy, and I think that interface can still use some 'ease of look' look-see. Again, the refinement update in 9.38 should solve some of the issues with it. The MCP is also not being picked up greatly by the team at RA. This is due (partly) to the copilot studio issue, that I think is just about to be released. But management feels that we are slow to see AI and MCP value (with the exception of test case intelligence) . Baselines are an important part of archiving old work and releases. However the interface is very difficult. A quick fix would be so pin folders at the top of the baseline area. The biggest problem is that is a difficult area to keep clean due to the number of reviews and work complete in the project. And the people that can manage it are WAY TOO LIMITED. Everyone that creates a review or baseline should be able put it in a meaningful place in the structure in a baseline area. But since only admins can create folders or move content into them people just have to leave the baselines where they are created by the tool. NOT GOOD. This makes it a big effort to clean up for release and audit. This is one of the places where doing work later makes more work. It is a 'link while you think' -type of work and the baselines should be managed at the point of creation. Another big problem that can be solved by Jama is the review information availability. We have a large enterprise problem where reviews are closed automatically (this is an equal problem with training and ease of use. But when we say it is a training problem, it is also an ease of use problem) Anyway, when the review is closed, the program manager does not have easy availability of the approval status of the review and the approvers. There are a couple reports, but we need a more native way to be able to access this information. This content should be better accessible by API, and better yet to be accessible by filters. Another place where there could be improvement is the dashboards. We push to use the tool natively, so creating reports, though often works, isn not ideal. We need better complex dashboard capabilities.... with the ability to have 2 custom fields as variables - such as status per phase example. **What problems is Jama Connect solving and how is that benefiting you?** It solves our compliance needs by having the native review and traceability. These are the two biggest deliverables (other than requirements, of course) of 62443 for user. We primarily use it for test management, and convincing people to use it more regularly for requirements management is hard because they prefer Atlassian products, which fit better in the developer workflow. Those tools, however, aren't built for the needed rigor around baseline-ing and traceability like Jama Connect. Without using it fully for requirements, the tool is too expensive to just use it for test management. Also, we tried the Jira integration initially, but there's not enough flexibility to integrate well as the mapping usually isn't clean 1-to-1; it's usually 1-to-many or many-to-many, so we dropped the integration package. **What problems is Jama Connect solving and how is that benefiting you?** Jama Connect helps me manage requirements and testing. The best part of it is probably the Trace View area which can show 1:1 direct traceability issues across a snapshot of one of the requirement holding areas such as User Needs to Engineering requirements. It is very easy to write a requirement and the templates are especially useful to create a consistent context and format. For User Needs and User mapping this is especially useful. Very easy to implement changes and cascade to the team. Very strong customer support and engagement from JAMA. If we have an issue we know it will be listened to and we will get response in a quick time-frame. We are now frequently using JAMA consistently and is allowing easy integration of requirements into our engineering R&D Practice. **What do you dislike about Jama Connect?** One downside to JAMA Connect in it's present form is the lack of overall visibility of the end-to-end User Need to validation journey. It would be great for the full coverage explorer of traceability to be easily interacted with dynamically. The customisation to add '' Show Relationships in Tree' should really be there already to allow the user to start at the inputs and lead all the way through. We had a 'DTM' template created but it doesn't really pick up Validation or verification plans/ reports very effectively. Test Plans and Verification feels a bit buried in the software and it is not intuitively obvious to get to. Similarly, creating a validation plan or protocol to then be pulled through in a template is similarity quite difficult to do. The editing of templates is quite difficult and it would be better if there was a customisation tool to allow the creation of a template without having to rely on the creation of velocity reports which take months to develop. It is not an efficient process of doing this. A simple tweak to a template takes a lot of effort and this should not be the case. The Review process could be much improved as the workflows currently allow approval of rejected items in a review. If the entirety of a module is sent for a review with varying Transition States then there should be a smarter workflow or more customisation of a workflow. I have had many reviews with comments that go through and rejected items have been approved. I then have to remember what was rejected and make a manual note to then go back and change them from approved to rework. The up-revision of a new review completely wipes all previous approval but it would be ideal if something previously approved is flagged differently in the review. The second-best thing is that there is no practical limit to the number of stakeholders that can have read-only access to the requirements. The versioning of items is also very good, together with the establishment of baselines for the requirements, both to help with releases, and be able to easily compare between those baselines/releases. The Review Center, although it has not displaced the existing Jira-based review that already existed in our organization for established documents, we have used it successfully for new documents/requirements outside of the established process. Finally, you can tailor the existing item types and relationships, and create new ones, with standard types for requirements management and testing as part of the default set. This restriction is highly problematic, especially when we're attempting to align our workflow and documentation practices around JAMA. We expected that a Creator without an available license would be downgraded to a read-only role, rather than losing access to essential content. Difficulties Managing Multiple Products JAMA works reasonably well when focusing on a single product. However, managing multiple products simultaneously becomes overly complex. The system does not provide an intuitive or visual way to differentiate or compare between products. With the REST API you can also develop your own tools to interact with the data in Jama for integration into other processes. Thanks to the available training videos users can easily onboard and understand the basic functionalities. Special items always need a 'Set' as a parent item, even if you only want to add a single item to your project. The tool offers several features that I particularly appreciate: 1. Administration & Implementation The system is easy to configure. You can define general settings that apply to all projects—such as permissions, item types with required fields, workflows, and relationship rules.... At the project level, you can select the necessary item types and, if required, override permissions or workflows. It is straightforward to maintain consistent behavior across projects. Additionally, configuration changes can be applied centrally, affecting all projects at once. For reporting, Word/Excel templates can be created quickly and easily, although they come with certain limitations (e.g. you cannot aggregate information). More complex reports can be generated using Velocity templates, which can be challenging for beginners and it is time consuming. For integrations, Jama Connect provides a well-documented API that allows you to retrieve, update, or create objects (including configuration objects, requirements and test items). 2. Requirement Structure & Definition Requirements can be organized into Components, Sets, and Folders. A Set corresponds to a specific item type. Moving requirements between folders is simple, and item types can easily be converted into others. This flexibility is especially helpful during the initial implementation phase if you need to adjust the structure. The Excel Roundtrip feature is particularly useful when working with item types that have many fields to update. (Note: For description fields, you must define them in HTML format, which is slightly more complex.) Importing requirements from Excel or Word works well, provided the source document is well structured with headings. All imported items initially share the same item type, but you can easily adjust this afterwards. 3. Review Functionality The review feature is excellent. You can send a batch of requirements for review and assign specific reviewers. Reviewers can highlight text within the requirements and add comments. These comments can be tracked and filtered, and once they are addressed, they can be marked as resolved. You can also compare changes between review versions, provided that the same items are included in the same review. This means you need to manually manage the items in review-items, for example using filters. 4. Finding & Exporting Data Requirements can be filtered easily using keywords or predefined filters. The export functionality is very convenient—especially the context-sensitive export, which allows you to export exactly what is visible on your screen. 5. Testing Features Jama Connect also supports creating test plans, test cases, and test cycles, as well as executing tests. However, we have not yet made extensive use of these capabilities. 6. Support During the initial setup, we received excellent support, and the system was ready for use very quickly. Integration with the cloud application and SSO also worked smoothly. Whenever we open a support ticket, we receive fast and helpful responses. **What do you dislike about Jama Connect?** Jama Connect is a requirements management tool, not a project management tool. However, I do miss the ability to plan requirements and track progress directly within the system. This can be worked around using the API or by exporting data to Excel and managing progress tracking externally. When creating filters, there is currently no way to organize them into a hierarchy. Filters are automatically sorted by item type and name. Over time, as the number of filters grows, this makes it harder to keep track of them—so establishing clear naming conventions is essential. Regarding license management, the unlimited stakeholder licenses for viewing requirements and performing reviews are a great benefit. However, when a user with a creator floating license is login and if all floating creator licenses are in use, that user is automatically downgraded to a reviewer license. In that case, they can only access requirements that are part of a review and lose visibility of all others. The search functionality works in a traditional keyword-based way. However, users are increasingly accustomed to conversational, AI-like querying (similar to ChatGPT), which is not yet natively supported in the tool. **What problems is Jama Connect solving and how is that benefiting you?** In the past, all requirement-related information was scattered across Jira, Confluence, Word, and Excel, making it difficult to know whether anything was truly up to date. With Jama Connect, we have centralized most of this information into a single, reliable source of truth.
