They actually have a very knowledgeable staff. They answer all PMRs in a reasonable time. There are many moving pieces in FileNet. They make sure that the correct specialists get involved with each and every problem. I have worked with many different ECMs including LiveLink, Documentum, Process360/ViewStar, Hummingbird and eManagers (which I coauthored). The IBM integration of Navigator and Enterprise Records was well thought out and is being integrated in stages very quickly. **What do you dislike about IBM FileNet Content Manager?** FileNet releases many fixpacks in very short order. The installation documentation can be confusing and has also been incomplete at times. I realize that it is important to get fixes out quickly, but the new feature releases need to be coordinated among all the Fn family products. A feature release for IER for 5.12 caused Navigator 2.0.3 feature upgrade to have problems, because the configuration task list changed. We no longer need to run the CE client install. They really did not get the word out across all products. Education is also a problem. IBM offers classes in the Philippines and India regularly, but not in the US, or so it seems. It would be nice to have some sort of training capabilities in all states where IBM has a campus. **Recommendations to others considering IBM FileNet Content Manager:** Do your homework BEFORE you hire administration staff. Everybody thinks they know FileNet. Even with 3-5 years experience, I feel like I am a beginner. Pay for real IBM training. It pays off bigtime. **What problems is IBM FileNet Content Manager solving and how is that benefiting you?** We are working to get medical providers paid in very short order. We have invoices and supporting documentation coming into the system from downloads, faxes, EDI and other sources , using ICC. We have 3rd party work flows, so we have implemented CMIS and SPNEGO. All these documents need to be grouped together, certified and paid very quickly. In addition, we are a federal entity dependent upon records management. Many ECMs offer up most of the capabilities of FileNet, but I have never used one that offered fast, reliable solutions to fix production problems real time, except for the one I coauthored, of course... ### 3. The server software was understandably more complex and the FileNet training courses (a week long each for Server and Desktop) were essential and well worth the cost (from a company's ROI perspective). Overall, I would recommend this to a company looking for a reliable document management solution. **What do you dislike about IBM FileNet Content Manager?** The server software (at least the P8 version from 2012) was resource intensive and I would recommend using Windows Server 2008 to host it exclusively. It may be compatible with UNIX systems as well but I'm not familiar with these configuration options. **Recommendations to others considering IBM FileNet Content Manager:** Properly and professionally train the individual tasked with configuring/administering the IBM FileNet implementation. Or hire a FileNet consultant to build the FileNet infrastructure and pay for support from IBM or the consultant going forward. **What problems is IBM FileNet Content Manager solving and how is that benefiting you?** From a document control perspective, when coupled with a high-speed document scanning solution, the company realized anywhere from 250K - 350K in overhead cost savings on an annual basis. This cost/benefit analysis is based on contracting a third-party vendor, which supplied their own personnel, and replacing it with the efficiency of a fully integrated document scanning solution leveraging FileNet's most powerful digital imaging management systems. ### 4. It has an excellent integration with Datacap to solve imaging requirements, 100% ECM capabilities, and provides an intuitive integration with supplemental products to implement rules, implement few BPM like repetitive tasks, and all type of Case solutions. **What do you dislike about IBM FileNet Content Manager?** FileNet has excellent ECM capabilities however the customers are facing issues with shorter release cycles of new FileNet product versions and compatibility issues with other products within the FileNet family of products. Due to this customers are spending more time and money on maintenance and continues upgrades of their FileNet systems. Due to various dependencies customers are not willing to upgrade their FileNet software which results in not leveraging the latest capabilities introduced in the FileNet software. So reduce the FileNet software release frequency. **Recommendations to others considering IBM FileNet Content Manager:** Recommended for organizations who are looking to implement most of the ECM-centic requirements and Case Management solutions. If you are customer looking for basic ECM needs, you may feel expensive in terms of procurement, maintenance and support. **What problems is IBM FileNet Content Manager solving and how is that benefiting you?** From Business view - Used for Insurance claim processing, Account Opening and Income Tax document management. From Technology view - Migrating docs and apps from non-ECM to FileNet, Document ingestion through Email, Scan and Fax. Securing the documents and allow the users to search for documents by metadata and text based. Implementing the records management for compliance and legal purposes, and reducing the storage and maintenance cost for legacy unwanted documents. Similar in style to the addage "20 ways to shoot yourself in the foot", FileNet provides both administrators and end users with a wide arrange of tools that is compatible with a large array of platforms (including WIndows and Linux flavors) that allows for business processes to be overhauled and greatly enhanced **What do you dislike about IBM FileNet Content Manager?** IBM FileNet has its quirks in terms of administration and, to be frank, is not cheap. This is a universal dislike within the ECM and EDM space, however, as there is no easy to use and easy to afford product out there that fills the niche that FileNet fills. Out of all of the products out there, however, FileNet in my experience is the most robust and the best value. **Recommendations to others considering IBM FileNet Content Manager:** Look at other products and try them out before settling on FileNet. You'll appreciate the end product much better when it comes time to implement it. **What problems is IBM FileNet Content Manager solving and how is that benefiting you?** Businesses collect a lot of data from all over the place. FileNet has allowed the companies I have worked for and consult for the ability to organize this information into an easy to access format that allows for greater collaboration between departments and users. The benefits are immediate. Companies that have implemented FileNet (and for that matter, other ECM products) constantly say that they couldn't remember life before the system was implemented. ### 7. In almost 14 years of use, we haven't had a significant problem with either version of FileNet we've used. **What do you dislike about IBM FileNet Content Manager?** The Setup of scanner interface to Content Services. It requires ISIS drivers; until recently has required scanners with SCSI interface. It's been difficult some times to get the PC hardware, SCSI card, ISIS drivers, physical scanner and Content Services to all play nice together. **Recommendations to others considering IBM FileNet Content Manager:** In my experience, FileNet is: very stable, maintenance is minimal (if you already have a SQL DBA, they can probably take care of routine maintenance), performs as expected/advertised, setup can be a challenge (IBM will probably do the server setup; techs may find the ISIS driver/scanner/PC setup to be challenging), probably too expensive for small business. **What problems is IBM FileNet Content Manager solving and how is that benefiting you?** The goal was a paper free office. We started storing 100s of thousands of document, mostly images and now have tens of millions of prescriptions, profile images. All are safe and secure at the same time easily accessible. The supporting tools like ISRA and HPII process works flawlessly, provided you implement this right way. **What do you dislike about IBM FileNet Content Manager?** There is a learning curve with first time implementation, but if that's done right, it works. The interface that comes with the product can be improved. **What problems is IBM FileNet Content Manager solving and how is that benefiting you?** We have to manage tens of millions of documents including prescriptions, profiles, correspondences, etc and all are stored and accessed using File Net Image Services tool. If you need small or large content Management for your organization, FileNet can do it. We are now completely paperless, and back log is GONE! We have been on P8 Since 2009, it is usually stable and reliable. **What do you dislike about IBM FileNet Content Manager?** When something goes wrong, it cascades server to server, making it difficult to administer sometimes. Also the direction IBM is going with no Microsoft, does not make it easier. Training has gone WAY down hill in the last few years, I can barely find a class, and never on the West Coast. How can P8 keep it's momentum with now New Recruits and training existing admins/developers for each new release. This is going to make it worse down the road to acclimate new technical staff. **Recommendations to others considering IBM FileNet Content Manager:** Training is lacking. Nowadays, with IBM FileNet, it has progressed to offer a repository for content besides documents, services and app support for the content, integration with Microsoft Office, and collaboration and mobile devices support. These features differentiate IBM FileNet from other Enterprise Content Management software these days. **What do you dislike about IBM FileNet Content Manager?** Dislikes would be no integration with Google applications or specific links to collaborative software like Facebook or LinkedIn. It is the best ECM and BPM tool, I can say FileNet is the evergreen product when compared with other competitors with respect to security and process.It performs very well as advertised.Maintenance is very minimal. Administration is made easier and lighter weight than in the past. Since P8 5.0, the IBM FileNet suite has really come into its own as a modern, scalable ECM platform. The APIs have been simplified. The API was great and easy to use even for .Net. Since P8 4.5, building workflows has been great and easy. In my organization IBM Enterprise Content Management is used across the organization by various departments. It provides easy access to stored content with proper security management. It is used to eliminate the need to store the physical documents, hence saving lot of cost and human effort. **What do you dislike about IBM FileNet Content Manager?** It has to improve a bit on Capture area to make the environment developer & user friendly. For any capture component it has to be installed on every machine individually. Though it can be fulfilled with DataCap module. Configuration and customization still require deep expertise in the platform. **Recommendations to others considering IBM FileNet Content Manager:** I suggest to Banking and Finance domains to use FileNet to create secure and paperless environment. The product also integrates well with Records Manager and eDiscovery solutions and running in a distributed or zOS environment. **What do you dislike about IBM FileNet Content Manager?** The product does not support binary streams...(i.e. AFP files or PDF Streams). The product seems to be limited in future development as IBM seems to be building new applications (e.g. IBM Connections) on Filenet. Although Filenet is not supported on the mainframe (zOS), the concern is if the market for Content Manager on the mainframe disappears, then IBM will drop the product for Filenet as their corporate content management solution. Finally, IBM has many other products (IBM Datacap, IBM Content Collector, Advance Case Management, Watson Content Analytics) that provide a total Enterprise solution, but are licensed separately...so the total operation cost can be very steep... **Recommendations to others considering IBM FileNet Content Manager:** This is an excellent product for large corporations that want to consolidate volumes of content and reduce the burden of content management and discovery. The product has a strong integration capabilities with the use of IBM Content Collector product for content ingestion with other products (Lotus Notes) and other vendors (SharePoint). The product also supports secondary functions to content management such as: auto-classification, email archival, records management, and eDiscovery. The product supports Content Management Interoperability Services (CMIS), an open specifications supported by a number of CMIS vendors that allows seamless integration with applications that are CMIS complainant. **What problems is IBM FileNet Content Manager solving and how is that benefiting you?** The product is being used across the enterprise for many different Lines of Business (LOB). Our organization used Filenet to store contracts with customers so stability and security were very important. Filenet delivered. In addition, Filenet offers the ability to search and retrieve information based on the content of the stored information. I found the search feature to be accurate and reliable and I was able to retrieve the information I needed quickly and efficiently. Although expensive, the training offered in order to gain the necessary knowledge to administer this tool is excellent. **What do you dislike about IBM FileNet Content Manager?** Upgrading is expensive and planning an upgrade in which the tool is several versions behind is extremely challenging. It's a complete ECM platform with all major functionalities built into it. Each product in the platform compliments the overall ECM implementation challenges and helps in addressing very specific content management needs in an enterprise. The IBM Content Navigator framework which comes with this platform is probably the best thing that could have happened in the IBM ECM portfolio. It allows to solve many hidden sub-problems that may be not obvious while developing a new ECM system. here's where File Net has you covered and good practices were already implemented before. IBM FileNet has a great set of connectors for data migration to and from Adobe, Cofax, XML import/export; perfectly works with Oracle, DB2, MsQL databases, IBM WebSphere, Tomcat application servers, allows to configure data model and user permissions as detailed as you may need. **What do you dislike about IBM FileNet Content Manager?** Some components of platform cannot be modified so creating system architecture should be performed carefully to avoid future support difficulties. It responded well when used as storage and all images were fine. The majority of all of the troubleshooting issues (including workflow issues) that I dealt with were easily resolved. The invoice image, coding, and approval was all completed electronically.
