I could have subtitles in videos and download them for offline use. The forums were active. The course was good quality and useful. For me this was a game changer. Soon after that I started using Coursera, which had most of the benefits without the hefty price tag. With Coursera I was able to speed up videos that would otherwise make for a tedious lecture and kept myself focused while burning through the all the videos. Another advantage is that a lot of the courses have programming projects, which I find very important for the student, since they help consolidate all the acquired knowledge. **What do you dislike about Coursera for Business?** At times you might not be able to see the material for an old course, mostly in the case when you accidentally re-register for it. This is inconvenient since I keep a relatively optimized schedule for doing my reviews and not being able to access old quizzes or materials can be a hindrance for the preservation of what was learned before. Additionally, the iOS client does not offer the ability to change the speed of videos (or it didn't back when I last used it). In the past I used to peruse through the syllabus of classes given at different universities and just bought the books and learned the subject myself, sadly this does not scale very well when learning multiple subjects. There are "quizzes" after lectures, but often they don't reinforce knowledge and instead only ask for dictionary-level definitions of the most basic concepts from the video. There is also a challenge in identifying which classes will be good and which ones will be a waste of time. It isn't just some random person who knows something, telling you what they know, these are people that instruct classes at Stanford, Rice, Duke, University of California, and other accredited educational institutions. I also like that some courses offer verifiable certificates of completion and make it pretty easy to add them to your LinkedIn profile. **What do you dislike about Coursera for Business?** The user interface is a little difficult to use. It has the feel of an old-school bulletin board system to me. The production quality of some of the instructor videos is poor as well. I've had cases where I can barely hear the instructor or simply can't understand them. **What problems is Coursera for Business solving and how is that benefiting you?** I use Coursera to expand my knowledge in various areas of Computer Science. In that time I've watched it grow from a basic platform that provides classes between specific periods, including courseware, grading and assignments, to one that actively seeks to build community around the topics and courses, encourages learners to go at their own pace (by offering repeat sessions of courses and automatically advancing learners who have fallen behind to the next course offering), and exposes learners to a wide variety of institutions and topics. **What do you dislike about Coursera for Business?** There is no way to rate a course within coursera. Some of them are very mature, very well-developed, and others need a substantial amount of work. At the very least it would be helpful to have an idea of the level of challenge - rated by other Coursera users. For example, there are five or six machine learning courses currently being offered. These differ from one another based on platform (Matlab, Python, R), approach (start with theory or application), and skill level. It's the skill level that's difficult to quantify - a professor in computer science who is accustomed to getting upper-level undergrads may label a course as beginner, while another from sociology who is accustomed to getting sophomores with no programming background may label a course as advanced, but these could really provide an identical experience. The sales-side is fairly heavy. If you want to sign up for a course for free (Audit it), sometimes you have to dig to find that as an option. Lastly, there are no links within the sequence pages to find individual courses. Truth be told, I'm not going to shell out $495 for a 6-course sequence until I've completed at least one course and have a taste for the teaching style, methods and subject areas. There are series I've begun in earnest only to find I didn't enjoy the approach, or found that it was a language I was interested in but the focus for application was not what I was looking for. **Recommendations to others considering Coursera for Business:** Take your time to shop out courses and allow yourself to watch a few lectures before making a decision as to whether you'd want to delve in and take the course, for credit or for audit. There are multiple courses for some subject areas, and there are courses offered multiple times per year. Also, give yourself the time to make an actual committment. I often see folks get frustrated when they commit an hour to a course that asks for 5 and probably took 9 or 10 because a video needed to be re-watched or an assignment didn't make sense the first time through. If you try to rush through it you're really just cheating yourself. Before deciding whether to pay for a class, ask: - Will this help my career? - Is there sufficient content? - Do i want to support this professor, school, course or platform? The honest truth is, I don't know how much of a $79 course fee the prof actually sees. I hope it's a good chunk. I'd actually not mind going to a subscription-based method where I pay $200/year and get unlimited courses. I would pay that. I don't think I'd pay $100 per course. **What problems is Coursera for Business solving and how is that benefiting you?** The business problems I've sought answers for on Coursera have ranged from QA and program evaluation to process mapping to database interaction. I could not have had the start I did in my most recent job without the (now-discontinued) course on Database Systems taught by Jennifer Widom, nor would I be as far along as I am in learning R or Python. I also found UCSD's course on Big Data very helpful as we try to set up a localized hadoop cluster. On a personal level I'm exploring where I belong in this Big Profitable Amorphous Thing Called Data Science. The quality of the content will vary upon the universities and professors giving the courses. It has a PC and a mobile version, very useful if you want to use your connecting time to learn. Courses are free if your not chasing certificates, and not very expensive otherwise, compared to traditional professional trainings. However, a majority of the courses are entry or undergraduate level. You will be limited if looking for advanced knowledge in your field of expertise. **What problems is Coursera for Business solving and how is that benefiting you?** I use Coursera both for my current work and for personal interests in fields I am not directly working in, though still related to my background (engineering). Coursera keeps me updated with mew methods and techniques, essentially in data processing. Coursera offers a huge spectrum of classes in many different disciplines from liberal arts, to engineering, to business there is something for everyone. There are always skills out there that people want to learn, but don't have a good way to do it. Coursera partners with teachers from well known Universities (ex. Johns Hopkins, Duke, Brown, etc.) to provide well structured courses including lecture videos, homework, quizzes, exams, due dates, grading, and forums to ask and answer questions about the course content. The combination of having a lot of quality content and good structure to the courses makes Coursera a great way to learn. Given all this, the best part about Coursera is that it is FREE. You don't have to pay a penny to use it. Of course they offer verified certificates indicating you personally took each course you say you did, which you have to pay a fee for (~$50). This could be good for a resume, but you can learn absolutely everything in all the courses for $0 if you choose to. **What do you dislike about Coursera for Business?** I don't like that Coursera charges so much for verified certificates for courses. The $50 or so per course may not seem like a lot for a good quality class, but it is infinitely more than the $0 option with no certificate. I love Coursera so much I would consider giving back something like $10 per course, but $50 is just too much. **Recommendations to others considering Coursera for Business:** Go for it, there is no cost to you and you can always drop a course if it isn't for you. **What problems is Coursera for Business solving and how is that benefiting you?** I've spent a lot of time trying to learn more about Biology and Big Data since that wasn't my in background from college. Yes I said consume, one can consume knowledge but in this case it is not a bad thing. This access has allowed those who do not have time, money, or means to go to universities of the caliber found at Coursera. The community is very diverse from all over the world giving varying insight and knowledge that helps the learning process a great deal. I am enjoying the new on demand courses and it seems these are growing. This is a good thing for those whose lives can get very busy. I also like the specializations certificates they have begun this can give a person a good start in a number of areas. **What do you dislike about Coursera for Business?** The only thing so far I have issue with is the discussion fora can get noisy. So one must be very selective in taking part or you will be overwhelm with responses. Though I have not personally had any issues I have seen a few fora get rude. This is dealt with but this seems to be the price one must pay in these types of environs. **Recommendations to others considering Coursera for Business:** Pace yourself. Just because it is online does not mean you cannot get overwhelm by the workload. Start off with one or two courses to get a feel for the pacing of the learning. Once you got a grasp jump in fully and enjoy. If you can afford to purchase the certificates I strongly recommend you do so adds an extra incentive to complete you coursework. Do not limit yourself to what you know but do things you have never tried. **What problems is Coursera for Business solving and how is that benefiting you?** This product is a good means to broaden individual and company knowledge base. Staff developmental needs require unique solutions and Corusera offers a great solution. That sort of mimics a college/university pace. Also I would recommend people take courses at different levels, so that he or she both has confidence-building courses and also gets to challenge oneself in a relatively complex field. For example, I took 3 different classes in machine learning, algorithm and programming in scala. They cover different fields and are of various levels.
