This was the first grant application I’ve ever submitted, and I expected to spend the day fighting a clunky portal. I didn’t. The form asks for things in an order that makes sense, so I was never hunting around for where something should go. The character limits are stated up front, which saved me from writing three paragraphs and then cutting them to the bone. What I liked most was the notes box beside each attachment. Most portals let you upload a document and then it just sits there. Here I could tell the reviewer what each file was and why it mattered. Honestly, not much. My one frustration was the fiscal sponsor section. As a first-time applicant, I wasn’t sure whether it applied to me, and I nearly filled it in with my own organization’s details. A line explaining that you can skip it if you hold your own 501(c)(3) status would have saved me the second-guessing.
