It really lets you get at the logic of TLS, as just byte streams. You can do the actual I/O however you want, which is important for embedding scenarios. i.e., all the logic is decoupled from syscalls, sockets, etc. Also, they have good guides on how to do lots of different things. It's not as nice for situations where you want your application to write ciphertext into wolfSSL and get ciphertext out, i.e. with control flowing from your application into wolfSSL. Rather, you give it I/O callbacks, and when you interact with the plaintext read/write, WolfSSL calls your I/O callbacks to read/write ciphertext, i.e. control flowing from WolfSSL to your application for ciphertext I/O.
