That’s where Tolgee made the biggest difference : it makes the collaboration visible.

Tolgee features like task assignments and granular permissions make it easier to coordinate large groups of contributors. Translators can also discuss specific strings directly in the interface, reviewers can mark translations as approved. This keeps the entire localization workflow transparent and manageable, even with dozens of contributors involved. **What do you dislike about Tolgee?** We struggled to set up some integrations, and are still working on it. We could also use more data visualisation to have a better and custom monitoring of translations overall state. **What problems is Tolgee solving and how is that benefiting you?** Climate Fresk uses a community-driven localization workflow where facilitators themselves translate workshop materials. Each translation typically involves one translator and one reviewer, and progress is tracked using Tolgee’s translation states system.

We’ve been using it for more than two years, and we’re very happy with it. We use it for Compose Multiplatform as well as native iOS and Android, which helps us localise both our shared UI and platform-specific strings. We also use it for our Next.js website, and it works very well there too.

One thing I really like is how flexible the tooling is. The Tolgee CLI allowed us to create custom scripts to pull strings and place them exactly where we want them, as well as automatically remove unused strings. On top of that, Tolgee MCP allows us to handle localisation through AI. When we don’t use MCP, we use the Tolgee Web UI, which is easy to use. We currently manage around 30 languages, and the experience has been fast and reliable.

They offer both a managed service and a self-hosted option, with reasonable pricing for companies of all sizes. The team is approachable and genuinely responsive to feedback. For instance, when I first started using Tolgee in 2024, Compose Multiplatform wasn’t supported yet. I opened an issue on GitHub, and support was added in a following update. I also had the opportunity to participate in a user interview, which reinforced my positive impression that they genuinely care about hearing feedback from their users. **What do you dislike about Tolgee?** I don't have any point at the moment. We’re on the cloud plan at the moment, but it’s reassuring to have the option to self-host if we ever need it. **What do you dislike about Tolgee?** We’re a small company (around 10 FTE), and at the moment some of the features feel a bit OTT for what we need. It’s very easy to manage translation keys, languages, and machine translations all in one place. Adding new languages or updating existing translations takes very little developer involvement, which saves us a lot of time compared to handling translation files manually. The automatic translations feature is also a big plus. Setting up Tolgee was very easy. As a DevOps engineer, I've found it simple to use with GitLab CI/CD pipelines, especially since I can just keep project details in a tolgeerc file and let the automated Tolgee CLI do the rest. It's great that it allows me to take the responsibility from developers to handle translations in their apps, which saves them time from extracting translations, delivering them to translators, and importing them back into the code, even when changes have been made in resources or UI. On top of all that, I'd rate Tolgee a 10 on how likely I am to recommend it! **What do you dislike about Tolgee?** I ran into an issue when I updated my self-hosted Tolgee instance. The update ended up breaking translations completely. I had to restore the old database and manually fix the broken resources, which was really painful. Specifically, resources exported from the PHP app and those with string interpolation symbols like {0} were affected, as they started showing up with broken syntax like /{0/} after the upgrade. If you want to self-host it, you can and it's "free" (if you consider your time and resources free). Fee is reasonable, counting it's not human translation. **What do you dislike about Tolgee?** If you need more than machine-made translation, they don't offer this service (yet). For "simple solutions" like a website (i.e. WordPress site) implementation maybe it's quite complex.
