## OpenBOM Reviews
  ### 1. A great PDM and PLM software

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Hamidreza H. | Director of Operations, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** August 21, 2024

**What do you like best about OpenBOM?**

We use OpenBOM every day in our Engineering Design, Fabrication, Manufacturing and Automation departments. The software is very straightforward and user-friendly. Integration with SolidWorks is very helpful, responsive and in one word it's amazing. The cloud-base nature of the software makes implementation easy. The catalogue and BOM modules enable the users to customize the propertiese which is an impresssive option. The PDM workspace works as expected. The customer support is just one-click away.

**What do you dislike about OpenBOM?**

I like evertything OpenBOM offers and am excited to see barcode integration for implementation of further automation in inventory management.

**What problems is OpenBOM solving and how is that benefiting you?**

We use openBOM for PDM, Design Collaboration, Deign Transfer, Design Review, Revision Control, ERP, Manufacturing Automation, Fabrication Management, and Inventory Management.

**Official Response from Oleg Shilovitsky:**

> Hello Hamidreza, thank you very much for your review and feedback! As you probably seen, we are introducing QR code automatic generation at OpenBOM - (https://www.openbom.com/blog/introducing-openboms-new-feature-automatic-item-qr-code-generation) coming in the next release. We would love to discuss barcode requirements with you to understand better the needs and types of barcode you're using. Please contact us directly. Best, Oleg

  ### 2. Does as it advertises on the cheap

**Rating:** 3.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Automotive | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** January 29, 2025

**What do you like best about OpenBOM?**

OpenBOM works as a BOM software. It doesn't offer unique products that other companies don't have, but it does come at a much lower price point.

**What do you dislike about OpenBOM?**

The integration into Solidworks either doesn't work well or is confusing to setup. Parts with design changes won't have the changes reflected server side.

**What problems is OpenBOM solving and how is that benefiting you?**

It would be used as server storage for file management, allowing for easier sharing.

**Official Response from Oleg Shilovitsky:**

> Hello,

Thank you very much for your review and honest feedback.

It seems like something in your setup is not configured correctly, especially since you mention the "server" side. OpenBOM's out-of-the-box integration captures data directly from SolidWorks and does not require any server integration. (Server integration is available separately for SolidWorks PDM.)

It’s likely there is some misunderstanding regarding the setup and configuration.

Please feel free to contact me directly—we would love to help you resolve this issue.

Best,
Oleg

  ### 3. Searching for a GrabCAD alternative

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Philip S. | CTO, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** October 10, 2024

**What do you like best about OpenBOM?**

Easy to use and intuitive workspace manager makes it easy to sync at the start and end of the day but with additional features through the website portal.
Customer support is quick and actually useful.

**What do you dislike about OpenBOM?**

Some basic expected features, such as multiple file cleanup/deletion, through the portal seem to be behind the paywall.

**What problems is OpenBOM solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Easy PDM system for myself and my collegue overseas. It allows us to easily sync CAD to share our work. We don't currently use the check in/out feature but for a larger team this is invaluable.

**Official Response from Oleg Shilovitsky:**

> Philip, thank you very much for your feedback! We are working to create a balance between affordable solution for engineer and our need to stay in business :). The goal is to provide a sustainable service and not to end up as GrabCAD one day... Best, Oleg

  ### 4. Evaluated for SMB using Solid Edge for Commercial Equipment Manufacturing

**Rating:** 1.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Manufacturing | Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** August 22, 2024

**What do you like best about OpenBOM?**

The sales staff at OpenBOM was very helpful and informative, and tried his best to support us despite it not working out.

**What do you dislike about OpenBOM?**

The integrations for Solid Edge Siemens products are not mature enough for us to utilize the solution. We were not able to get the system to work for us, unfortunately.

Additionally, the 1-year required pricing model made it nearly impossible to evaluate the system fully before we purchased. They locked us into a 1-year contract because we wanted to evaluate features that were only included in their "Enterprise" plan which requires a full year contract. They advertise a monthly cost, but don't allow for monthly subscriptions.

The 14-day trial is not nearly enough time to fully evaluate the software, and we didn't run into any significant issues until after the trial ended. We thought we would be able to use the software and justified a 1-year contract, and ultimately ended up finding many issues with the Solid Edge integration. It would have been better if OpenBOM could provide a monthly subscription for the Enterprise features at a higher cost that we would have happily paid to better evaluate the software before commiting to a 1-year term.

I would not recommend signing up for the Enterprise plan without a better evaluation pricing model. Engineering problems are hard problems, and using a third-party software rather than Siemens' Team-Center is a risk to our business, even with its lower cost. Considering it is third-party, they should allow for a more flexible evaluation pricing model for their enterprise features, otherwise it's simply not worth a 1-year commitment with the amount of risk you take on.

**What problems is OpenBOM solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Unfortunately OpenBOM was not able to solve our problems, and we are no longer using it. We paid for a 1-year term, and stopped using it about 2 months into the subscription.

**Official Response from Oleg Shilovitsky:**

> Hello, and thank you for your feedback! I'm sorry to hear that OpenBOM didn't meet your expectations. Unfortunately, since your review was submitted anonymously, we can't address specific details related to your use case, which is disappointing. However, I want to fix some inaccuracy in what you said - you are welcome to explore any function within OpenBOM, except for specific enterprise-level features like custom integrations or enterprise-specific configurations, such as ERP or PLM integrations. that requires special installation and configurations

The Solid Edge integration you mentioned is available in all subscription plans and can be tested through a simple "free registration" click. Once again, I'm sorry that OpenBOM did not fully satisfy your needs. We would greatly appreciate it if you could reach out to us with more detailed feedback on what didn't work for you. We value all feedback, especially the critical ones, as they help us continuously improve our product. This commitment to improvement is a core part of our philosophy at OpenBOM.

Please feel free to contact me directly via email at oleg at openbom dot com.

Thank you,
Oleg

  ### 5. OpenBOM review

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Ehsan H. | Design Engineer, Automotive, Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** August 22, 2024

**What do you like best about OpenBOM?**

OpenBOM is an outstanding tool for managing product data and streamlining the entire BOM (Bill of Materials) process. Its user-friendly interface and cloud-based platform make collaboration across teams seamless, allowing for real-time updates and reducing errors. The integration with various CAD systems is smooth, saving time and effort in syncing design data. OpenBOM has significantly improved our product management workflow, making it an indispensable tool for our operations.

**What do you dislike about OpenBOM?**

OpenBOM's pricing structure is a bit disappointing. The costs can quickly add up, especially for small teams or startups, making it feel overpriced for the value offered. While the platform has useful features, the subscription tiers seem high, and the added costs for essential integrations feel excessive. It would be more appealing with more flexible pricing options or a better balance between cost and functionality

**What problems is OpenBOM solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Our Design Teams often struggle with collaboration, especially when members are spread across different locations or working remotely. OpenBOM facilitates real-time collaboration, allowing team members to work on the same BOM simultaneously and make updates that are instantly visible to everyone.

**Official Response from Oleg Shilovitsky:**

> Hello Ehsan , thanks for your review and feedback. Do you mind to reach out to me directly to discuss your ideas about flexible pricing. I'm curious to learn what we can do. We usually provide discounts to small teams and startups. Also OpenBOM free tier can help everyone to manage files for free. Best, Oleg

  ### 10. Slightly Better Than Excel, But with More Buttons to Click

**Rating:** 2.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Electrical/Electronic Manufacturing | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** December 25, 2024

**What do you like best about OpenBOM?**

OpenBOM may not have received the most glowing reviews, but its ease of use is certainly a standout feature that makes it appealing.

**What do you dislike about OpenBOM?**

What I dislike about OpenBOM is that it doesn’t allow syncing data directly into an Access database in Altium, which limits its integration capabilities.

**What problems is OpenBOM solving and how is that benefiting you?**

OpenBOM attempts to create a PLM system by offering features like centralized data management, collaboration, and BOM tracking. However, it falls short when it comes to effectively supporting electronics design in Altium, limiting its usefulness for more complex workflows.

**Official Response from Oleg Shilovitsky:**

> Hello
Thank you for your review. You missed the capability of OpenBOM to manage Altium catalogs (Access) via DB Lib interface - https://www.openbom.com/blog/introducing-openboms-new-altium-designer-dblib-support.
Best, Oleg

The number of features can be quite overwelming
Some advanced features require a bit of learning.
User interface needs a bit of better look and feel.

**What problems is OpenBOM solving and how is that benefiting you?**

OpenBOM has made managing our BOMs and inventory so much easier.
Instead of having everything lost in multiple spreadsheets, emails and chats, we now have everything in one place, and updates happen in real time for the whole team.
Its integration with our CAD tools means less manual work and removes a lot of human error.
It has streamlined our process and keeps our data organized and accessible.

OpenBOM has the features we needed, was compatable with SolidWorks and easy to use. Their team is also available to answer questions and offer support.

**What do you dislike about OpenBOM?**

There is a lot of purchasing data that OpebBOM can track. Our team does not need this, so we customize a bit.

**What problems is OpenBOM solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Having a single source of truth for our manufacturing data is key. This way everyone is on the same page with what we are building and how to handle changes.

**Official Response from Oleg Shilovitsky:**

> Hello Kerry

Thank you very much for your comment and review.

I'm curious to learn what you needed to customize and how we can improve the experience.

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Chemicals | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** October 23, 2024

**What do you like best about OpenBOM?**

Smart Sync, the featuer of Smart Sync allows you to either download or upload file to the folder depending on the timestamp of the file, which means you dont have to worry about old dat being uploaded and downloaded, you can also lock files to ensure others are not changing the CAD while you are.

**What do you dislike about OpenBOM?**

Worspace manager updates - everytime I was to push an update the workspace manager app updates to the current version. Maybe thay should move to once a month updates on the app

**What problems is OpenBOM solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Data sharing between multiple engineers is something that we were struggling before OpenBOM. Another thing is BOM release, it is much easy to release the BOM now.

**Official Response from Oleg Shilovitsky:**

> Hello

Thank you very much for your review and comments.

We are optimizing Workspace Manage update. You're right- recently we made quite a few updates. But we made them to optimize some of the functions and the feedback from our active customers migrating large amount of data to OpenBOM Design Projects.

Best, Oleg

  ### 15. One of the best online tools for your project

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Yunior A. | Administrador Sistemas . Desarrollador, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** August 06, 2024

**What do you like best about OpenBOM?**

The ease of use of OpenBOM, as well as having a free entry subscription that allows you to create your BOM without great difficulties, the supply chain, revision controls, issue management, and the facilities for importing and exporting your data, as well as the management of your project's documentation, make OpenBOM not just another tool for crafting your projects but one that will greatly facilitate bringing them to successful completion.

**What do you dislike about OpenBOM?**

It could be a bit cheaper for the subscription for those companies that are starting and are in LATAM, perhaps consider the price for these regions that do not have a high purchasing power.

**What problems is OpenBOM solving and how is that benefiting you?**

With OpenBOM, I can have a complete record of the materials I need to create my project in a fully organized manner. Additionally, it has allowed me to create documentation very easily, and this has been vital in the development cycle of our products.

**Official Response from Oleg Shilovitsky:**

> Thank you for your renewal and comments. We are working with partners to help provide a better sales strategy for specific countries and user communities.

  ### 16. Limited use without further investment

**Rating:** 3.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Conor B. | Mechanical Design Engineer, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** May 21, 2024

**What do you like best about OpenBOM?**

OpenBOM is useful for enabling multiple people to build and edit bills of materials that are exported from finished designs in SOLIDWORKS. I think this product would be especially useful for a company with well defined product stages, where once a product is released it is no longer edited. With a static design, OpenBOM seems very effective at communicating and tracking data through product stages. That's not my scenario, however, so I can only make assumptions based on what I have to work with. The add-in for SOLIDWORKS is generally well integrated, pulling all subassemblies and parts from a larger assembly and allowing for multiple different display styles in the OpenBOM interface. This can help a purchaser see that there are 500 screws in an assembly while also showing an assembler that the subassembly they're building has 10 of those screws, for example. OpenBOM's help library is also extensive and well formatted, making learning new skills and solving problems pretty intuitive and quick.

**What do you dislike about OpenBOM?**

I inherited the use of OpenBOM from the previous administrator without any overlap. He had begun setting up frameworks in OpenBOM (BOM templates, POs, etc) but had not, in the 6 months or so he had been using it, built out and shared a process flow that integrated with our company. It was difficult to pick up where he left off, given that it was only partially integrated. Part of the issue is we already have programs to handle Design BOMs and Purchasing/Accounting separately, and people are used to them. Without a solid understanding of his intent, it's difficult to make a case for everyone else integrating OpenBOM into their existing workflows. I can see how OpenBOM could be useful if the full organization understood and made use of its features, but our need is already supported by other programs and the possibility of added efficiency does not outweigh the effort of transferring all of our data, as well as teaching all of our employees how to use this new system. I am also having trouble understanding how OpenBOM updates items from SOLIDWORKS; it seems design edits (especially when a part is removed from an assembly) are not always translated when a BOM is "Updated" from SOLIDWORKS. This may be user error, but removed parts tend to stick around and cause confusion until manually pulled from the BOM. The main thing making using OpenBOM difficult is data transfer and format mismatches; it's difficult to work with both SOLIDWORKS PDM and OpenBOM in terms of translating changing part and assembly drawing information and keeping formatting familiar.

**What problems is OpenBOM solving and how is that benefiting you?**

For my business, it is not really solving our problems. We had hoped it would serve as a single hub for design, purchasing, manufacturing, and accounting in terms of part and cost tracking. However, our legacy data that's still in use is large enough that transferring everything cleanly would be difficult. The benefit provided also does not, at this time, outweigh the opportunity cost of retraining all of our employees that work with BOMs.

**Official Response from Oleg Shilovitsky:**

> Hello Connor, thank you very much for your review and thoughtful feedback. I'd love to understand better you challenges with PDM formats. Also, I'd be curious to ask why. you're not considering to switch to OpenBOM file management option. Please feel free to contact me directly. Best, Oleg

**Official Response from Oleg Shilovitsky:**

> Hello, thank you for your feedback and review! I'm curious what issues with Part Numbering you see?

  ### 20. Streamlining BOM Management with Challenges

We cannot manage template, data representation and folders directly in Fusion360, I need to create the template adn the folders first in the web application.

**What problems is OpenBOM solving and how is that benefiting you?**

After the design is done, I can see all the pieces I need and build a cut list and a shopping list.

Flattening the view is great as I allow to sum the quantity of the same items in different assemblies.

**Official Response from Oleg Shilovitsky:**

> Hello, thank you for your review and feedback!

I'm curious to learn more about what issue with the Fusion Templates do you have?

Do you mind to contact our support and elaborate?

Thank you, Oleg

**What do you like best about OpenBOM?**

i like how the data orgenized, its very easy to find files and information

**What do you dislike about OpenBOM?**

every time a new team member register, its open a demo profile for a project

**What problems is OpenBOM solving and how is that benefiting you?**

The system solves the problem of multiple files and confusion in revisions, creates order and allows for an organized BOM.

**Official Response from Oleg Shilovitsky:**

> Hello Ben,

Thank you for your review and honest feedback! We truly appreciate it.

Regarding the issue with demo data, I see your point. We are planning to make the "demo data addition" optional in the future. In the meantime, as an admin, you can use a function to delete the demo data for all users in your team.

I hope this helps, and thank you again for your feedback!

  ### 27. A better BOM

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** John C. | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** April 16, 2024

**What do you like best about OpenBOM?**

Open BOM has been a great tool allowing me to accurately calculate costing and then saves me hours of work for every subsequent update. I would say that OBs biggest competitor is excel or google sheets. I went through the excercise of creating boms in both to see if OB provided enough value to justify the cost. The main thing for me is the fact that it maintains links between cad and costing data. For excel or sheets that link is broken so any changes require manual management of all data. Thats so time consuming and leads to more errors.

Being able to calculate part costs and have them roll up to the top of the bom means that I can create orders using whatever combination of products and know that my costs are accurate for each item. I created material catalogs in open bom for all raw materials (tube, angle, sheet metal etc) so I can adjust my material prices and have that change propegate to all parts and assemblies that use that material.

Ordering parts becomes a lot more straight forward. Instead of manually building order sheets in a spread sheet I can simply select the products or parts I want to add to an order at the desired quantity and create my PO.

**What do you dislike about OpenBOM?**

There is a learning curve to OB that was a bit steeper than I expected. Because this is not a typical spread sheet it doesent necessarily work the way you would expect. Formulas can be somewhat limited as they cant only handle one set of parenthases but that is something I believe they are working to develop so this might not be a relevant complaint in the future.

I would say that their documentation is pretty good to get started but not all scenarios will be covered and so I needed technical support at times to figure things out.

This might be an issue with solidworks but when I update parts the thumbnails are often not updated correctly even though I have "recalculate thumbnail" selected in the settings. This is especially problematic when a part has changed size but is showing the old part.

**What problems is OpenBOM solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Open bom maintains links between cad files and boms. This makes costing calcuations throughout the product development cycle much faster and more accurate. Previously I would have to export boms from the solidworks drawings and then create an excel spreadsheet bom. This required a lot of manal entry and formatting. If changes were made I would basically be starting over. Open bom keeps the link between the bom and the cad files so updates and their associated cost changes are reflected in a few clicks.

**Official Response from Oleg Shilovitsky:**

> Hi John, thank you very much for sharing your feedback and review. We really appreciate it. OpenBOM is a different from a typical spreadsheet, because it only looks like a spreadsheet. It is a database with structured set of relationships running behind the scene and we manage structured product data. However, I'd like us to dig deeper to understand your problem with the image you mentioned. It can be browser cache, but want to check it. Do you mind to contact our support? Thank you, Oleg

  ### 28. As an alternative to Grabcad, OpenBom has been a valuable tool in our prototype development.

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Design | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** August 01, 2024

**What do you like best about OpenBOM?**

With the help of the Workspace manager it has been easy and is also a great way to know that we are always working on the latest version of the componentry. Just need to make sure that as a part of the start at the begining of the day and shut down at the end of the day that you it the "Smart Sync" button just to be sure the latest has been uploaded.

**What do you dislike about OpenBOM?**

As we are a small startup at the moment and only using the design portion of OpenBom it would've been good to know that everytime a Sync is completed a version is created, and as using in design mode these versions seem to be not available should we need to revert to one.

**What problems is OpenBOM solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Collaboration within our small team and the ability to always have the latest version of data.

**Official Response from Oleg Shilovitsky:**

> Hello. thank you very much for your review and feedback. We like that you found useful Design Projects and hope you will grow to use other features and functions of OpenBOM service. Good luck with your startup! Best, Oleg

How easy it is, to get more and more estimates without worrying about the trial limit, allowing it to easily save parts

**What do you dislike about OpenBOM?**

some times, very rarely sometimes it was laggy and took some time to start

**What problems is OpenBOM solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Keeping all data organized in different tabs

**Official Response from Oleg Shilovitsky:**

> Hello Affan

Thank you very much for your review and feedback.

Do you mind to contact our support and share more information about your location, browser and internet connection to understand why it is sometimes hard to start.

  ### 30. OpenBOM as a PLM software

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Kiyan Y. | Vehicle Dynamics Engineer, Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** October 23, 2024

**What do you like best about OpenBOM?**

The part about openBOM that was the best for me was the ability to automatically save and not have to upload files. In addition to this it was quite easy to manage files.

**What do you dislike about OpenBOM?**

The inability to delete files from openbom, as well as the inability to rename files efficiently. My main qualm is the inability to delete.

**What problems is OpenBOM solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Managing CAD for formula SAE team.

**Official Response from Oleg Shilovitsky:**

> Hello Kiyan

The problem of delete with Design Project was fixed in the recent update.

I'm curious more about the problem of renames. Do you mind to contact us and share more?

Thanks, Oleg

  ### 31. OpenBOM Works Well

**Rating:** 3.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Jorgen H. | Applications Engineer, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** August 22, 2024

**What do you like best about OpenBOM?**

I just started using OpenBOM for 3D CAD management, using it several times a week. It took me a little time to understand how it worked, but once I did, it's very easy to upload/download changes. It doesn't try to be fancy, it just does what it needs to do. It interfaces well with our current system, no issues.

**What do you dislike about OpenBOM?**

It would be nice to see what files will be overwritten before overwriting.

**What problems is OpenBOM solving and how is that benefiting you?**

We have teams across several states that collaborate on individual projects, and OpenBOM helps everyone to be on the same page.

**Official Response from Oleg Shilovitsky:**

> Jorgen, thank you very much for your review and feedback. I'm curious to learn more about file management. OpenBOM never overrides the files, but create a new version. Maybe I'm missing something in your comment. Please contact us to discuss if you can. Best, Oleg

  ### 32. It was a laborious learning curve with many hiccups

**What do you like best about OpenBOM?**

Every thing in one place and is a good double checker

**What do you dislike about OpenBOM?**

For odd unknown reasons it will glitch and not put PDF's or step files in.

**What problems is OpenBOM solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Literally puttin gall our eggs in one basket helps to keep track of what we have to purchase, release etc/

**Official Response from Oleg Shilovitsky:**

> Hello, thank you for sharing your feedback and review. Would you be open to contact our support and discuss what was hard for you to learn? Thank you, Oleg

  ### 33. Keeps you informed

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Mechanical or Industrial Engineering | Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** September 17, 2021

**What do you like best about OpenBOM?**

A lot of similar companies similar to OpenBOM , as well as others are constantly changing software and interfaces, as well as costs to accommodate these changes. This is a necessary thing to stay relevant. Where OpenBOM stands out is the transparency in which they do so. I always feel well informed about any changes that are to come with this platform.

**What do you dislike about OpenBOM?**

This is a small gripe, but it would be nice to see a platform crossover with OneDrive, Microsoft Project, or really any other platform that would make automation easier.

**What problems is OpenBOM solving and how is that benefiting you?**

We use this program to work with our parts we commonly use in our assemblies in Solid Works. This has also been a huge help when creating our operating manuals with our spare parts lists.

**Official Response from Oleg Shilovitsky:**

> Thank you for your feedback! OpenBOM allows you to link to OneDrive, Dropbox, Google Drive, and others. Check a topic "how openbom manages files" in our documentation online. Best, Oleg

  ### 34. Makes transition from design to manufacturing easy

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Kaci S. | Chassis team member, Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** October 25, 2024

**What do you like best about OpenBOM?**

OpenBOM is extremely helpful for transitioning between design to manufacturing. My team has used this for project management to have a clear idea of what our costs will be, inventory we have, and staying on track with manufacturing.

**What do you dislike about OpenBOM?**

It's a little difficult to navigate at first so learning the platform and training other to use it is difficult and there is little support for training.

**What problems is OpenBOM solving and how is that benefiting you?**

This mainly helps my team with organizing our materials and project needs. We go from design to manufacturing quite quickly and this helps everyone stay in order and informed.

**Official Response from Oleg Shilovitsky:**

> Hello Kaci

Thank you for your review. I'm curious what can be improved to simplify the initial navigation with the platform. Do you mind to reach out me directly to discuss?

Best, Oleg

  ### 38. Very pleased with the trial I had.

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Building Materials | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** October 23, 2024

**What do you like best about OpenBOM?**

I liked how you could store everything about assemblies inside of OpenBOM. I was able to export from solidworks and open it in a different window and see all the detail.

**What do you dislike about OpenBOM?**

I am not sure what I did dislike. I don't think I had it for that long to know. It was a little confusing to use but saw there were hunderes of videos. I think if there was introduction videos of step by step instead of having to search for it.

**What problems is OpenBOM solving and how is that benefiting you?**

It was able to export an entire BOM of a project and create entire custom data fields of what I needed on it. Was able to simplify the main different programs we have and the needed for training lots of people on the equipment.

**Official Response from Oleg Shilovitsky:**

> Hello , thank you very much for the review and comments about videos. The "Best Practices" documents explains how to use the system step by step. You can find it in the training library - help.openbom.com. Here is one for SOLIDWORKS you can find useful - https://help.openbom.com/my-openbom/openbom-for-dassault-systemes-solidworks/. ### 40. Excellent system. Glad we found it before committing to another main brand.

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Biotechnology | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** July 18, 2023

**What do you like best about OpenBOM?**

We use Fusion360 and having such a comprehensive management system which ties in natively is ideal. I would strongly recommend it with any cad package.

**What do you dislike about OpenBOM?**

Not a dislike but an improvement. How awesome would it be to do auto sourcing. If you put in main suppliers like Farnell etc it would recommend based on parts

**What problems is OpenBOM solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Our products have many configurable subassemblies which have been a nightmare to manage in the past. This has brought structure and traceability into workflows.

**Official Response from Oleg Shilovitsky:**

> Thank you for your review and update! We are checking how to provide OTS vendor recommendations. What are the main sources where you're searching for parts these days? Can you tell us? Please contact our support - we would be happy to discuss this.

  ### 41. Bill of material management, inventory control, automatic PO creation.

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Jim W. | Engineering Manager, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** March 28, 2024

**What do you like best about OpenBOM?**

We were looking for a PDM solution, but the costs were over our budget. Then I came across Openbom, which can control our files. But it does so much more than a PDM does. Inventory management, PO creation based on the inventory, catalog of physical and virtual components, very well-rounded system that gets better with each new version. During my trial period, support went above and beyond to make their system handle my data, which is a little special from years of struggling to do all of this in Excel. I'm so happy that the end is near for Excel and outdated data!

**What do you dislike about OpenBOM?**

Template setup took a bit of time, but well worth it now. Data looks the same as it did in Excel except the items are "smart" now with live inventory locations and quantity on hand.

**What problems is OpenBOM solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Data management, Inventory Quantity, Inventory location

**Official Response from Oleg Shilovitsky:**

> Hi Jim

Thank you very much for your review and sharing feedback! We are happy to have you as a customer. Looking forward to working with you.

Best, Oleg

  ### 42. OpenBom with Onshape

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Automotive | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** October 31, 2024

**What do you like best about OpenBOM?**

The cost and useability of OpenBOM has been great so far. It was easy to setup the catergories and rules for generating part numbers.

**What do you dislike about OpenBOM?**

Generating part numbers from Onshape could be improved. I have issues when generating part numbers from different categories to large assemblies.

**What problems is OpenBOM solving and how is that benefiting you?**

OpenBom is giving us control over our products. We are a cross disciplinary company (mechanical and electrical) and it helps us coordinate and control the state of our parts.

**Official Response from Oleg Shilovitsky:**

> Thank you very much for your feedback and review. Do you mind to contact and discuss how part number generation can be improved. Do you mind to contact me directly?

  ### 43. It has been positive.

**What do you like best about OpenBOM?**

It is very simple to use and intuitive. I like the visual BOM structure display.

**What do you dislike about OpenBOM?**

Sometime I struggle jumping between screens but expect to get better the more we use it.

**What problems is OpenBOM solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Capturing product design and communicating to supply base.

**Official Response from Oleg Shilovitsky:**

> Hello Scott, thank you very much for your review and feedback! I'm curious if you can share more about your experience of jumping between screen. We would love to see how to improving. We are also developing and enhancing our "graph navigation" capabilities, which will provide a more seamless way to navigate between the data. Best, Oleg

  ### 44. OpenBOM is useful

**Rating:** 2.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Manufacturing | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** October 23, 2024

**What do you like best about OpenBOM?**

Helps easily upload BOMs with Solidworks plug-in.

**What do you dislike about OpenBOM?**

Pain to manage, when needing to change part it doesnt allow streamlined design changes

**What problems is OpenBOM solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Helping with managing parts and over-purchasing.

**Official Response from Oleg Shilovitsky:**

> Hello,

Thank you for sharing your feedback; it is very valuable to us.

OpenBOM is designed to allow seamless changes, both online through real-time collaboration and by updating changes effortlessly.

Therefore, your dissatisfaction is concerning, and we would like to understand what we might be missing.

Would you be open to connecting with our team to discuss the issue regarding "not allowing streamlined design changes"?

Thank you,
Oleg

  ### 45. Simple, yet effective and fairly-priced tool burdened with occasional bugs

**Rating:** 3.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Maciej F. | Senior Mechanical Design Engineer, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** May 14, 2024

**What do you like best about OpenBOM?**

I used this program integrated with SolidWorks. I like that this software is simple, yet effective and easy to start working with. You don't really need a ton of Youtube tutorials, it's quite intuitive. I also like the fact, that it Browser based and I don't have to install another program. It's also fairly priced, which was also one of the leading factors for buying.
Despite the bugs, the support is very helpful and responsive.

**What do you dislike about OpenBOM?**

There are some bugs present, sometimes the data is not updated accurately or the items get duplicated. It feels a lot like playing a Bethesda game.

**What problems is OpenBOM solving and how is that benefiting you?**

I was able to integrate my 3D CAD data with the lab and production team.

**Official Response from Oleg Shilovitsky:**

> Hi Maciej, I appreciate your feedback and review. You pointed on a very important element that can impact the result - data quality and GIGO effect (Garbage in / Garbage out). Data coming from SOLIDWORKS can impact the outcome. We recently introduced a few new mechanisms that can help companies to analyze the data and find mistakes. Such as OpenBOM graph navigator can find loops in BOM structure. Duplication report gives you list of duplicated BOMs. Best, Oleg

  ### 46. overall positive experience. could be better but it does make managing BOMs easier.

**Rating:** 3.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** ido h. | mechanical designer, Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** August 11, 2024

**What do you like best about OpenBOM?**

option and interface of thumbnail image - extremely important
very agile and allowing - easy to add and remove columns

**What do you dislike about OpenBOM?**

not very intuitive - understanding how to find what you're looking for requires some thinking. likewise for single vs multi level BOMs - I think it may be difficult to understand to people that speak english as a second language.

**What problems is OpenBOM solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Clunky excel spreadsheet and duplication of sources in managing versions and stock

**Official Response from Oleg Shilovitsky:**

> Hello Ido

Thank you very much for your feedback and review. We are continuously working on improvements of OpenBOM user experience and learning materials. Have you had a chance to check our documentation, courses and videos?

Best, Oleg

  ### 47. OpenBOM, a comprehensive bill of materials, inventory management solution

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Dav L. | CTO, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** March 01, 2024

**What do you like best about OpenBOM?**

An holistic approach to production planning, management of bill of materials and design greatly assists the entire engineering process. I particularly enjoy the ability to create custom objects, to import CAD files and integrate Fusion360 projects. The workspace manager is a great benefit to anyone wanting to manage large projects. The free tier includes unlimited cloud storage, CAD & Doc Management Project Revision Control, Sync with local folders and
Smart Sync

**What do you dislike about OpenBOM?**

The obvious downside is the lack of direct integration with manufacturers, in particular well-known PCB fabrication providers. The parts catalogue on the free tier is also rather limited, and the addition of gateways to global parts suppliers and comparative costing would be a bonus. However one can share catalogues and this may allow other users of the platform to provide services. A lack of plugins for open source CAD projects is noted, but this is not critical.

**What problems is OpenBOM solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Providing a central point for online data for our various projects is of great benefit and we can only hope that OpenBOM will move towards providing direct integration with parts suppliers and PCB fabrication. However catalogues are able to be shared, as well as BOMs from other users, so this does lend itself towards growing a community.

**Official Response from Oleg Shilovitsky:**

> Hello DavL, thank you very much for your review and feedback. We appreciate it very much. The functionality of access data in online catalogs is one of enhancements we are trying to achieve in OpenBOM. At this point, OpenBOM is integrated with many electronic catalogs using Altium Nexar API (also known as Octopart), so if you're using Octopart, you can find any item there and directly import it to OpenBOM. We are planning to expand the reach of catalogs integrated with OpenBOM and provide a custom user defined tools to import data from websites. I'd love to have an opportunity to discuss catalog and catalog usage with you. Please reach me out directly via email. Best, Oleg

**What do you dislike about OpenBOM?**

there isnt much not to like, on a rare occation you may run into data base upkeep troubles but that may be due to personal structuring.

**What problems is OpenBOM solving and how is that benefiting you?**

OpenBom has allowed us to keep our vast electronics production dapartment very tidy in terms of stock management. it has also allowed us to manage engineering changes very well, the archive system allows us to navigate problems efficiently, when dealing with a wide array of stock openbom is perfectly suited.

  ### 49. BOM Management for Equipment Manufacturing Companies

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Ben R. | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** November 26, 2023

**What do you like best about OpenBOM?**

OpenBOM has numerous tools we use for our equipment manufacturing company on a daily basis. When we first got set up the integration with Solidworks was seamless. We use OpenBOM for our CAD storage and rely on check in/out and revision tracking heavily for our production releases. Making manufacturing packages is so much easier now as we used to have to manully export BOMs and sort items with pivot tables in excel. Eliminating the need for manually checking accuracy is very reassuring and time saving. Having the piece of mind that the correct revision of the part was ordered and the correct QTY depending on the amount of machines is a great feeling. A big thing we are looking forward to implementing further is the inventory tracking and PO integration with Quick Books that OpenBOM offers.

Having this all in one central PLM is a big move for our company and we are glad we made the switch to OpenBOM! Looking forward to many more years to come.

**What do you dislike about OpenBOM?**

OpenBOM is still relatively new so features are being updated regulary to better serve customers. The team is very responsive to tickets and informs of expected timelines of your requests. It will be exciting to be a part of the growth of OpenBOM

**What problems is OpenBOM solving and how is that benefiting you?**

OpenBOM is solving the problem of tracking and storing CAD data while also producing product orders from BOMs. With the numerous products that we build and moving to new revisions constantly, tracking what was done and how it will be implemented is great for ensuring the correct parts are ordered. Integrating product pricing and vendor sourcing helps us to better visualize our costs and focus on the areas we need to improve to increase margin potential. Having this all in one spot helps our team see all the data and get used to just one system.

**Official Response from Oleg Shilovitsky:**

> Hello Ben, thank you very much for sharing your review and feedback about OpenBOM. We are excited we can help you solving problems of tracking and storing CAD data, managing BOMs and purchasing problems. We are continuously developing OpenBOM and extending its functions. Feel free to contact me if you have any questions. Best, Oleg

  ### 50. Easy to use and very intuitive

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Luke B. | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** February 16, 2024

**What do you like best about OpenBOM?**

I do our testing, compliance and regulatory, and purchasing/sales. I work very closely with our test labs and factory. OpenBOM has made it very easy to break down each of our products components, the "shared parts" for testing. This prevents us from testing the same components multiple times and helps keep test costs down. The "WHERE USED" function is great. I use OpenBOM frequently to identify and order parts and components that customers request. It has made this very easy. OpenBOM also works as a great place to easily catalog and reference all of my CPCs and CoCs that I share with our factory.

**What do you dislike about OpenBOM?**

I'm not sure if it because of the ease of use of OpenBOM or the integration that our admin has done, but OpenBOM has worked the way I expect it to for my uses. Unless I am doing something wrong, I would like to see the top level BOM of where a part is used, instead of only the assembly level. I do know that I can still get there pretty quickly from each assembly level though.

**What problems is OpenBOM solving and how is that benefiting you?**

OpenBOM has helped me save a ton of time and effort, which frees me up for other activities.

**Official Response from Oleg Shilovitsky:**

> Hello Luke, thank you for sharing your feedback and review. I'm happy to share that we are going to provide "Where used with the top level option" feature in the coming release. I'd love to hear from once we release it. I'm sure you will like it.
Meantime, we do have a new visual graph navigation in "where use screen".

Best, Oleg
