In my company, we engage in custom engineering projects that heavily rely on programs like Solidworks. OpenBOM simplifies integration by allowing quick and easy importation of new databases. It's a significant improvement over the spreadsheets we used before and enables us to track design changes with greater accuracy. The integration with Solidworks is excellent. I can directly add the Bill of Materials (BOM) from Solidworks, and the associated pictures are carried over, making it easier for technicians to reference them. The best part is how simple it is to change parts and update BOMs frequently. **What do you dislike about OpenBOM?** One aspect that I find less favorable about OpenBOM is its fully cloud-based nature, which can occasionally result in sluggishness or lag. The assembly and part structuring is easy to use and intuitive. Integration with Quickbooks and Invetnor makes ObenBOM useful through the entire processes of part creation/design to purchasing and inventory. Also, customer supprt was very helpful when I had an issue. **What do you dislike about OpenBOM?** One difficulty I have experienced with OpenBOM is the inability to lock a BOM in its current state once the job is complete. This is an issue becuase we will sometimes replace a purchased component with an equivelent, but leave our internal part number the same. If I update the part to reflect this change, it will update the older assemblies as well. **What problems is OpenBOM solving and how is that benefiting you?** OpenBOM is helping us by streamlining BOM creation. Before OpenBOM we were struggling with updating BOMs between Google sheets and Solidworks. Usually, we'd make the first draft of a BOM in Solidworks, export it to .xls then export it to Google Sheets. Following that we'd add more data such as business information (part sourcings, lead times, expected delivery etc). However it was then quite difficult to add more items. Do we add the item in Solidworks, export the BOM again then copy across the business information? Or do we brute force add it into Google sheets and renumber things based on the multi-level structure of the BOM? Well OpenBOM gets around that, as we are able to update the BOM with new parts, straight from Solidworks, without having to rewrite the entire BOM. It is also incredibly useful to be able to switch between multi-level and flattened BOM structures. OpenBOM drive is also very useful and we are able to organise our CAD company wide, with a clear understanding of who has permissions over what. In case we do mess something up, backups allow us to roll back our CAD on a part by part basis, and this has saved our bacon a few times. Speaking of the "and a bit more than expected part" I was impressed by the way OpenBOM handles procurement management. You can go straight from a BOM to an "order", to then a "purchase order". In laymans terms BOM = the bill of materials for ordering one of this thing. Order = I'd like to order X amount of thing, now how many individual parts do I need to order? Purchase order = I know the suppliers for each part of my order, now what exactly do I need to order from each supplier. Once you get your head around everything, it's quite intuitive and easy to understand. Also, OpenBOM has some of the best customer support I've seen around. The team is incredibly helpful and will stop at no cost to make sure things go smoothly for us. Good stuff OpenBOM :) **What do you dislike about OpenBOM?** With OpenBOM being a browser based solution, there are a few limitations regarding things like navigation. For example right click behaviour is a bit inconsistent; sometimes the browser right click dialogue appears, other times the OpenBOM dialogue appears. Once you get used to where exactly you need to right click it's alright, it takes a bit of getting used to though. General navigation can be a bit tricky as well sometimes. I sometimes expect general things such as re-ordering columns to behave the way they do in a spread sheet, but there are a few things that are behind menus. Again, it's alright when you get used to it. On the plus side, the tutorials and guides provided by OpenBOM do an excellent job of teaching you how to use their software, so given that you follow these verbatim, you should pick up everything that you need to know. You also have to keep in mind that the whole system is a database, not a spreadsheet, so links between multiple pages exist (from catalogue to BOM to order to purchase order) and you have to make sure that you nail everything down at each step. In otherwords, you shouldn't just add extra properties or columns to things willy nilly because you might be adding properties which should have been in the catalogue in the order and vice versa. To iron out all these "issues", OpenBOM has a pretty good onboarding programme where you have two, hour long meetings with a member of the OpenBOM team. I would recommend that you run through all the tutorials and such before hand, so that way you have more meaningful questions that are relevant to you (and can't just be found with a ctrl+f in the tutorials). **What problems is OpenBOM solving and how is that benefiting you?** We initially got OpenBOM to solve the problem of "how do we organise all of our CAD together in the company, given that GrabCAD workbench is going to die". OpenBOM Drive does a fantastic job at this and far exceeds the capabilities of our previous solution to this. By consolidating all subsystem components into a single, searchable location. The search tab capabilities make it very simple to locate an item. Adding and updating an item is straightforward, and the new object has a variety of property possibilities. OpenBOM made my job easier. **What do you dislike about OpenBOM?** I haven't had any major problems with OpenBOM, except for the previsualization of components, which may load quicker or entirely. Another thing I dislike is price increases that have occurred in less than a year. **What problems is OpenBOM solving and how is that benefiting you?** We can easily develop and update BOMs, track adjustments, and interact in real-time with team members all across the world thanks to the great OpenBOM integration tool. The catalog feature lets me quickly see parts for a specific product, photos, vendor details, costs, quantity on hand, CAD files etc. Everything can be customized from one project to the next. There are a LOT of features, but so far, figuring things out has been pretty intuitive. I look forward to learning how to better utilize the capabilities in OpenBOM **What do you dislike about OpenBOM?** I have not found any features that are not helpful & am having trouble finding any drawbacks to using this system moving forward. I will say that I am currently using a trial version in my work with a non-profit & hope to share an update after the trial expires as the features available to me might change. **What problems is OpenBOM solving and how is that benefiting you?** I think this system will make it easier to find replacement parts as needed, track & modify which vendors currently offer what we need & keep pricing up to date. We use an in-house ticketing system to track progress on projects.
