I like the Domain concept in Jaspersoft, which has been really helpful. It allows clients to create their own reports by whitelisting generic tables and columns, thus eliminating the need for developers to create new reports for every client request. The initial setup of Jaspersoft was easy because we had a proper guide for integration with our existing software. The support team was very helpful in resolving issues within a stipulated time. One thing I have noticed is that when many people execute Jaspersoft reports at the same time, especially those that take historical data, it can lead to out of memory issues. Been using it for a while now and it’s still pretty solid for scheduled reporting. Once reports are set up, they just run in the background without much effort. The export options are useful since we regularly need data in different formats. Also, the access control is something we rely on a lot—it’s simple but does the job. Performance is still a bit of a concern when working with large datasets. Some reports take longer than expected, especially if the queries are heavy. The UI also feels a bit outdated and takes time to get used to for new users. Error messages aren’t always clear, so debugging can take longer than it should. I appreciate the drag and drop feature for selecting columns, which saves me from writing big lines of code, and the ability to export reports in required formats. Tenant-based architecture and reporting Multi-tenancy is a first-class citizen — not bolted on. Each organization gets its own isolated context, permissions, and report repository. Managing a large client base without report bleed-across between organizations would be significantly harder without this, and it scales well as you add tenants. Intuitive organization and user management Creating organizations, assigning roles, and controlling what each tenant can see or do is straightforward from both the UI and the API. Role mapping can be driven directly from SSO claims, which means less manual provisioning overhead as your user base grows. Deep SSO and identity integration The external auth extensibility is genuinely powerful. We run both an OIDC/OAuth 2.0 flow for interactive logins and a pre-authentication token flow for embedded/programmatic access — simultaneously, on the same server. That flexibility is rare in reporting platforms. Highly configurable without forking core code The customization surface is large and well-structured. We layer in Spring XML overrides, custom JARs, and JSP-level changes — all without touching upstream code. Most platforms force you to choose between upgrading and customizing. High administrative complexity Jaspersoft is not self-service friendly for application developers. Steep learning curve across the board Both end users and administrators face a significant ramp-up period. The concepts around domains, topics, Ad Hoc views, and the repository hierarchy aren't intuitive out of the box, and the documentation doesn't always bridge that gap effectively. Dated UI The interface is functional but feels behind modern standards. For a reporting product where end users spend a lot of time, the UX doesn't inspire confidence and can be a friction point when onboarding less technical users. Slow engineering turnaround When bugs are escalated to the vendor, resolution timelines tend to run longer than we'd expect compared to other tools in this space. We use Jaspersoft to offer self-serve reporting to both our external clients and internal teams. Clients can explore their own data, run reports, and schedule exports without involving our engineering or support teams. Internally, teams have access to the same platform without any risk of cross-tenant data exposure. The multi-tenancy architecture was the key unlock here — we struggled with how to give each client a tailored reporting experience at scale, but now we can onboard a new organization and have them reporting independently with minimal setup. The SSO integration with our identity provider means users land directly in their reporting environment without a separate login, reducing friction for both clients and admins. Jaspersoft solves the problem of reliable, secure, and automated enterprise reporting by enabling organizations to design pixel-perfect reports and distribute them consistently through scheduled deliveries such as email and SFTP. It addresses key challenges around data access control, multi-tenancy, and compliance by providing strong role-based security and tenant isolation, which is especially valuable in customer-facing environments. For me, as a senior quality analyst, this has been beneficial in validating data accuracy, ensuring reports are delivered to the right users on time, supporting multiple clients with different access rules, and reducing manual effort through automation while maintaining consistent and auditable reporting outputs. In addition, the JasperReports Server environment was upgraded from version 8.0.3 to version 9.0.0. This upgrade has received positive feedback from clients due to the introduction of enhanced features, including multi-select parameters and improved show/hide field functionality, which provide greater flexibility and usability in report interaction. The addition of favorites and improved folder management has also made it easier for users to quickly access critical reports across products. It enables us to embed reporting capabilities directly into our applications, reducing the need for external BI tools.
