"Building Scale Out Applications on IBM Cloud Private"

What do you like best?

As an integrated environment, ICP provides all of the tools, services and maanagement interfaces for my teams to build scalable microservice applications. These are widely used open standard technologies around which I can build team competencies, hire staff with prior knowledge, and develop shared best practice architecture, code and process patterns.

Furthermore, the ICP platform is an easy stepping stone between private and public cloud environments. This facilitates experimentation of scale out, provides internal DevOps choices, and takes many of the public cloud vs private cloud technology debates off the table.

What do you dislike?

During the early availability of ICP there were minor stability and incompatibility issues. My teams battled through these, unsure if it was gaps in their knowledge, misconfiguration or genuine platform issues.

Recommendations to others considering the product:

Create reference architectures for your applications on ICP and show how they can migrate between public and private cloud

What problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

We are building metadata platforms, analytics platforms and cloud applications that discover, ingest, curate, analyse and report on actionable data in fields as diverse as Health, Finance, Government and Automation.

"This private cloud allows me to aptly customize my work environment according to my business needs"

What do you like best?

Application integration and upgradation is inevitable in todays competitive world. IBM Cloud has helped me by making me move my business applications to the cloud. I find it to be secure, reliable, fast and PS it carries the goodwill and assurance of IBM which makes it all way more trustworthy. My developers have created cloud inherent applications and reconstructed a few of my applications on the cloud. It'll help you innovate while integrating business applications smoothly making the best use of process innovation. Made extensive use of enterprise functionalities offered by IBM MQ and IBM API.

What do you dislike?

They are yet at the starting stage. Can improve on business support functionalities and user cost at Enterprise and Cloud Manager editions. For SM&E based users. Cloud Foundry is still not integrated but available only as a separate add on.

Recommendations to others considering the product:

Pretty easy to implement. Personal opinion --> better than Azure VPN / Amazon Virtual Private Cloud

What problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Secure and fast platform for business process automation

Provides integration of a multitude of running business applications as well as creating a nexus of dozens of others

What Virtual Private Cloud (VPC) solution do you use?

"Perfect Cloud Hosting with the benefits of great security"

What do you like best?

The foremost thing in the minds of users in a cloud environment is security and IBM helps deliver this alongside its hosting services perfectly. Also having servers to in a cloud environment powered by IBM is very time and cost effective.

What do you dislike?

It takes time to get a hang of what to do with the IBM Cloud private. Quite technical, sometimes I wish it was more GUI Friendly.

What problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

PROBLEMS SOLVING

We currently use IBM Cloud Private Data Storage with high privacy priority.

BENEFITS

All in one security: The IBM data facility is a security complaint across the board so that means the peace of mind that comes with knowing that security breaches are covered is always there.

Cost: IBM Cloud Private is predictable when it comes to cost so that means no nasty surprises when it comes to budgeting.

Automatic Updates: The updates are automated that means that you don't have to worry about updates after systems migration.

"Delivers on premise agility for applications which cannot be moved to the cloud"

What do you like best?

The flexibility it provides to spin off any application with the agility of a cloud. It also provides the ability to syndicate services from the public cloud which need not reside on premise and helps leverage the speed and performance of a cloud without compromising the regulations and guidelines of certain industries.

What do you dislike?

Currently it is VM based. I understand IBM is also making cloud foundry available on the same platform, which is currently a bit of a dampner and it will make it even more powerful.

What problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Hosting financial applications inside the premises which contains confidential financial data of the organization

"IBM Private Cloud User Experience"

What do you like best?

IBM Cloud Private provides a infrastructure agnostic platform for application deployment.

What do you dislike?

Installation sometime is not smooth. The monolithic Ansible code is heavy and have run into problems with install / uninstall /upgrade issues. Especially when installing along with addons.

Recommendations to others considering the product:

The product is complex. It will be worthwhile to not only be familiar with kubernetes but also Ansible and the ICP documentations.

What problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Ability to deploy applications in an infrastructure agnostic manner on multiple clouds. We have hadto do almost no changes to the application because of the underlying environment ICP provides and have been able to deploy to public and private datacenters.

"Go IBM Cloud Private and Get More Than One"

What do you like best?

Being able to stand up multiple datacenters in a consistent way. The migration also helped us clean up DNS and nonstandard configurations.

What do you dislike?

Database replication between datacenters and latency getting back to our mainframe. These are improving, but need to be faster and more stable for us to geographically distribute our customer traffic.

What problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Data recovery and allowing us to make infrastructure changes in one cloud while others serve traffic. We are also able to ramp up and down when predicted much faster. We are still unable to spin up and down servers on request and need to containerize to get there.

"A platform in search of a probloem to solve"

What do you like best?

It integrates legacy products software engineers are comfortable with, with cutting edge open source technologies.

What do you dislike?

It was next to impossible to deploy on OpenStack; an ostensibly supported platform.

Recommendations to others considering the product:

What problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

None at the moment; we halted the evaluation due to the above issues.
