FastSpring WAS The King of e-Commerce, Not So Much Now... **Rating:** 0.0/5.0 stars **Reviewed by:** Daryl W. | Founder/Owner, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.) **Reviewed Date:** June 22, 2017 **What do you like best about FastSpring?** I liked the fact that FastSpring only requires a percentage cut of sales and not an additional service fee, but as of 2023 that has now changed. They now required a $150 "Risk Assement Fee." And if you fail to pay it, your store will be shut down and all pending payments will be held for "90 days." I also loved the complete control of order fulfillment. My previous e-Commerce platform allowed for zero customization of the order completion email. FastSpring however, allows for customization of the text only email as well as the HTML version and even Web page order completion so that the customer doesn't even have to go to their email. They can complete an order and download their order in the same window! Sad that the e-Commerce platform I'm switching to now will not have this. They also fully cover VAT tax collection. Once again, my previous e-Commerce platform didn't cover VAT at all and they even assured me that VAT only mattered to sellers in the EU not buyers. This is incorrect. EU laws require e-Commerce sellers to charge VAT Tax on purchases of electronically delivered products for buyers based in the European Union. In the EU law before 2015, VAT was based on the location of the business, but it is now based on the location of the customer. So the fact that FastSpring abides with EU laws is great! And I have had many EU based happy customers thanks to FastSpring's VAT coverage! And how can I forget? Unlimited storage! Unlimited storage meaning that you can host as many files total on your store. So you could have a store with 10TB of files total. Individual product file size limits are 5TB however. But I will never use that much myself. Lastly, the ability to see your customer's IP address and how many times they have downloaded your product is an amazing feature! This helps me in particular when a customer tries to lie and say they never received or downloaded their order and they ask for a refund. FastSpring allows me to see how many times they've downloaded. On my previous e-Commerce platform, this was not possible. **What do you dislike about FastSpring?** The sudden addition of a mandatory "Risk Assessment Fee." We are to pay by 29th or they threaten to shut down our store and keep all earnings for 90 days. Their notice of this fee was also short notice. In addition to this, they are now using AI as the judge of whether or not we can continue to use FastSpring even after we pay the $150 fee. The AI can improperly process your documents and the human support team will not help you. So not only will your store possibly be shut down despite having the proper documentation, but the support team will not help you leaving you at the mercy of the AI. **Recommendations to others considering FastSpring:** Definitely try them out. It's free in terms of paying out of pocket to use their services, so you have nothing to lose! They have knowledgeable and helpful account managers and support staff and an outstanding team of designers/developers based on the quality and ease of use of the FastSpring platform. FastSpring is reactive to customer needs and regularly updates the platform to meet customer and legal requirements with minimal disruption to their users. **What do you dislike about FastSpring?** It smacks of Stepford perhaps, but the only thing I dislike is that we didn't find them earlier. **What problems is FastSpring solving and how is that benefiting you?** FastSpring provides us with a seamless solution to selling our products online. Using their app we were able to quickly and easily build an online store that fits in with our already established website. We needed to generate and distribute license keys for our downloads, and FastSpring offers several methods. We also needed to sell worldwide in many currencies and ensure that our customers were not being penalised on exchange rate. The side benefits have been considerable. With FastSpring as "Merchant of Record" we do not have the additional complexity of negotiating international tax and data laws. All payments are centraslised through FastSpring: we receive a sale notification, then a well-ordered sequence of events leads to the proceeds arriving in our Paypal managed wallet (also organised by Fastspring). We love the platform and the solution. But the dashboard usability could definitely use some improvements. It's getting there but slower than we'd all want. **What do you dislike about FastSpring?** The UI of the their new dashboard. Maybe it's because we're used to the classic dashboard (which is still available) but they did move all of the options to the new dashboard that were available previously. This made our transition into the new dashboard very long and confusing. There are still some tasks that make me use both dashboard to get it done. **Recommendations to others considering FastSpring:** It's great but please be aware that if you're also looking for the proper affiliate set up, you'll need to use their partner dashboard from Impact Radius. This creates some clutter whereas we'd expect 1 place to manage all of your e-commerce and affiliates. **What problems is FastSpring solving and how is that benefiting you?** We solve the problem of letting users purchase our software legally through a safe payment system that they can trust. It is also convenient that we can select a large number of currencies for payments and our clients are comfortable paying in local currencies rather than dollars. Taxes and the amount charged are clearly displayed. **What do you dislike about FastSpring?** Sometimes problems arise when searching for a payment "by the last four digits of a bank card". It takes a very long time to load and often gives an error when searching. Also, work needs to be done on better protection against fraudulent payments. For the few times that I have needed to contact technical support their knowledge, and response times, have been first-rate. The flexible integration options between the product site and FastSpring. For example if a customer is logged into the product site when clicking on a purchase link, information can be passed to FastSpring and this information can be used during the license generation process when a purchase is made. Numerous software licensing fulfillment options. New products are simple to set up by duplicating an existing product with options to change product specific attributes. When customers (usually sales tax exempt entities) have had questions about sales tax I have directed them to FastSpring customer support, and the feedback from those customers was that FastSpring’s response was excellent. The ability to generate a custom quotation for a customer and then simply send the link to the customer so they can complete the purchase. **What do you dislike about FastSpring?** A more modern and flexible visualization and reporting interface to view sales would be good, but this is a nice to have only as the existing tools are ok. **What problems is FastSpring solving and how is that benefiting you?** Elimination of the complexity involved with different, and complex, sales tax issues across worldwide sales. ### 11. They have been on the market for a long time. We've worked with them for 8 years now. And selling our apps and bundles has been very easy and secure with FastSpring's payment checkout. **What do you dislike about FastSpring?** We dislike the outdated features in the dashboard. There are a custom exports that we are interested in doing at the end of the month. But the dashboard which FastSpring has is a little bit outdated. Event hough they call it "new dashboard" – many export features that other competitors have, FastSpring doesn't have it. Another thing we'd like to have FastSpring approved – Affiliates. They are using Impact Radius as their affiliate service provider. But we'd like to have it all in one system to avoid any confusion. We want FastSpring to just handle all of our affiliates, split pays, etc.. And they somehow do this, but it's going through another company (ImpactRadius) which doesn't seem necessary to us. **Recommendations to others considering FastSpring:** If you are selling software — I genuinely believe FastSpring is the best choice that hasn't gone too corporate and keeps itself up to date with the latest trends. And FastSpring handles our store where we sell licenses. They provide Pop-up checkout and general checkout. This includes handling all taxes and credit card fees. We really like that it's a secure checkout. And all of our customers are very happy with the smooth transaction procedure that FastSpring provides. Even though we did customize the checkout to look as if it's part of our website. ### 12. It would be great to be able to search individual customers by territory, but that's a fairly minor issue for us. **Recommendations to others considering FastSpring:** Evaluate the value Fastspring provides given its status as Merchant of Record. **What problems is FastSpring solving and how is that benefiting you?** We have grown a significant B2C business from our own website, where Fastspring is effectively our financial sales structure. As a consequence, our conversion rate has been increased substantially. One more thing that is solved is the emailing issue. Recently, reaching customers' inboxes is really painful. Somehow FastSpring can always reach their inbox and never marked as a spam. Earlier we had big difficulties to deliver our digital products to buyers. It was absolutely essential for digital downloads, where we were almost unable to properly send download links and license keys to our customers. The embed for the website was especially helpful, it allows me to provide a storefront that appears like it is a part of my actual website. **What do you dislike about FastSpring?** The automatic store activation. It's often not clear if you've done everything you need to do in order to get your store up. This part was a little slow for me, but the site had also gone through a major upgrade, so this may have impacted me. **What problems is FastSpring solving and how is that benefiting you?** I have zero time to handle any payment processing. With minimal effort I was able to embed a simple popup payment window on my website that users can use to make purchases. The best benefit of all is that I don't have to worry about anything, once it's setup, FastSpring takes care of everything. ### 47. The support is also great for the few things that you can not configure yourself. I also like the FAQ and wiki pages, that helped me a lot at the beginning to setup my store. The platform never had any technical problem along the 5 year that I used it. Great performance! **What do you dislike about FastSpring?** The Fastspring fee is high (5.9%), as well as some fees on money transfers. The support answers can take a long time to come sometimes, but it comes. And they are always right on the spot. I also think that there could be a little more flexibility to configure and operate the money transfers. I had to get in touch with Fastspring several times to solve this kind of problems. A suggestion: may be you could propose a virtual credit card that can be reloaded through wire transfer. If it is possible. Many of my customer do not like to put their company's credit card on foreign e-commerce websites. **What problems is FastSpring solving and how is that benefiting you?** My customers can easily pay monthly licenses subscriptions, without problem. As I can configure the automatic emails, they receive all the information they need. The only thing is that they do not see how to download their invoices, and many times they reach to us asking to send them those invoices. ### 49. So we can do what we do best: Building high-quality software. They take care of all international taxes and VAT regulations... Handle many currencies too... The support team is very helpful and have good knowledge. FastSpring has a lot of customization options to connect to our website. Most importantly their service and (API-) backend is just incredibly fast. The up-time has been very good so far. We've basically never experienced any down-time. FastSpring is a very reliable partner to work with! **What do you dislike about FastSpring?** If we ask a more difficult question on their support form, we may need to wait for some time for them to respond. Smooth integration in our web design. We hear almost no complaints from our customers. Relatively good and fast support if there are any issues. When customers contact us directly for help and we ask them to contact FastSpring directly (for billing issues, invoices, etc.), the FastSpring staff always helps fast and well. **What do you dislike about FastSpring?** Fees could be a little lower, especially for inexpensive products. The subscription system is not completely satisfactory - there is a lot room for improvements. The reports section in the control panel is pretty slow, but all in all it`s ok. One thing that could be improved is how invoices are handled: we often have customers ask for invoices - these should be automatically issued by FastSpring and sent to the customers. Seems that the customers are confused who issues invoices and how they can access their own customer account with FastSpring. Maybe that`s something we should explain better, but it`d be nice if FastSpring would make that very clear to the customers right away. **Recommendations to others considering FastSpring:** Give it a try! **What problems is FastSpring solving and how is that benefiting you?** We handle all our online sales with FastSpring. We recently implemented a subscription based service as well and it seems to work fine with FastSpring.
