## Betterment at Work Reviews
  ### 1. From financial stress to confident planning

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Raoul B. | Head of Financial Wellness and Equity, Performing Arts, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** October 26, 2025

**What do you like best about Betterment at Work?**

The customizable financial advice in Betterment at Work has been valuable to me, particularly the information about debt management. The software has also enabled us to integrate it with our payroll system and onboarding employees into the program has become easier. The learning materials are also amazing; the investment strategy webinars have assisted my team to gain smarter financial ways of doing things.

**What do you dislike about Betterment at Work?**

Another area of concern is the fact that there is a lack of diversification of investment options in some of the managed portfolios. I would like to have some flexibility there. Also, the establishment and implementation demanded a higher IT-support than I expected. The interface of the mobile app can be optimized to get the information faster.

**What problems is Betterment at Work solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Our issue was poor employee enrolment in our retirement plan. One of the biggest obstacles was the unawareness. Our enrollment and engagement rates have been on the rise since Betterment at Work was introduced. The simple reporting is making employees feel better about their financial future.

  ### 2. Streamlined Project Assignment, but Integration and Reporting Could Improve

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Celina O. | Employee performance manager, Media Production, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** October 26, 2025

**What do you like best about Betterment at Work?**

The thing that I would like to genuinely appreciate about Betterment at Work is the way it has made internal project assignment process straight forward. It becomes a lot more convenient to check who is working on what and to redistribute the resources in case of urgent requirements. The real-time team bandwidth dashboard has also come in handy with regard to realistic project planning.

**What do you dislike about Betterment at Work?**

Sometimes, the integration to our old system of HR may be a bit cumbersome and some manual data input will be necessary, which seems unnecessary. I would also like to have the ability to have more granular reporting of customized team metrics beyond the standard project views. The notifications may be rather excessive at times unless controlled carefully.

**What problems is Betterment at Work solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Our hybrid workforce was also having difficulties with consistent communication and alignment of projects, resulting in missed deadlines. Since the introduction of Betterment at Work, we have a centralized location where all the project updates and tasks can be tracked. This has greatly minimized misunderstandings and everyone is in the same page irrespective of their whereabouts.

  ### 3. Simple, Easy-to-Use Interface That’s Fun to Explore

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Manufacturing | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** July 14, 2026

**What do you like best about Betterment at Work?**

Simple interface, easy to understand and play with.

**What do you dislike about Betterment at Work?**

Limited investment options, would like more freedom / variety

**What problems is Betterment at Work solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Easy handling of 401k

  ### 4. Easy to Use with Helpful, Knowledgeable Support

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Medical Devices | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** July 21, 2026

**What do you like best about Betterment at Work?**

Easy to use, and the staff are helpful and knowledgeable.

**What do you dislike about Betterment at Work?**

I recently integrated this with my payroll company, but when an employee changes their contribution rate, it doesn’t update in payroll. Also, sometimes I don’t receive an email notifying me of the change.

**What problems is Betterment at Work solving and how is that benefiting you?**

With this integration, I no longer have to manually update the contributions.

  ### 5. Seamless Payroll Integration and Easy 401(k) Management

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Jesse N. | Director of people Operations, Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** September 19, 2025

**What do you like best about Betterment at Work?**

Betterment has been a great partner for our 401(k) offering. The platform is intuitive for employees, and from an admin perspective, the payroll integration is seamless - it just works without extra effort on our end. Their automation and ease of use make plan management simple and efficient. Easy-to-use platform for both admins and employees with strong automation that reduces manual work.

**What do you dislike about Betterment at Work?**

Reporting could be more customizable, and there is limited ability to tailor certain features to unique company needs.

**What problems is Betterment at Work solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Betterment is solving the challenge of managing a 401(k) plan without adding administrative burden. The seamless payroll integration eliminates manual work and errors, while the automated features make it easy to keep the plan running smoothly. This saves time for our team and gives employees a straightforward, user-friendly retirement benefit.

  ### 8. Affordable, User-Friendly 401(k) Solution for Small Business

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Real Estate | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** October 21, 2025

**What do you like best about Betterment at Work?**

As a small business with 6 employees, we value Betterment at Work for its simplicity and affordability. The seamless payroll integration automates contributions, saving us significant administrative time. The intuitive app empowers our team to manage their 401(k) investments easily. Low, transparent fees—around $5 per participant monthly—make it cost-effective, and the responsive email support ensures quick resolution of any questions.

**What do you dislike about Betterment at Work?**

There are a few areas where it falls short for us. Primarily, the lack of phone support means we're stuck with email responses, which can take days to answer questions for our small team and this can be frustrating when quick resolutions are needed. Additionally, the portfolio options, though diversified, feel somewhat limited for employees seeking more customization beyond the basics. A Flexible Portfolio option exists for tweaks, but it's not as intuitive for non-experts, and we'd love more specialized choices like heavy ESG or sector-specific funds without extra hassle.

**What problems is Betterment at Work solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Betterment at Work addresses several key challenges for our 6-person small business, primarily around offering a 401(k) plan without the complexity and high costs of traditional providers.
Administrative Burden: Managing a retirement plan can be daunting for a small team without a dedicated HR staff. Betterment’s automated platform handles contribution calculations and payroll syncs (despite occasional hiccups), freeing up our time to focus on core business operations.
Cost Barriers: Traditional 401(k) plans often come with high fees that are prohibitive for small businesses. Betterment’s low-cost structure—around $5 per participant monthly—makes it affordable, allowing us to offer a valuable benefit without straining our budget.
Employee Engagement: Our team lacks deep financial expertise, so the intuitive app and pre-built portfolios (like the Core Portfolio for broad market exposure or the Social Impact Portfolio for ESG-focused investing) simplify retirement planning. Employees can easily track and adjust their investments, boosting their confidence and participation in the plan.

  ### 9. Keeps Us on Track, Needs More Personalization

**Rating:** 3.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Guillermo H.

**Reviewed Date:** November 12, 2025

**What do you like best about Betterment at Work?**

I love how Betterment at Work integrates smoothly into our daily routine, making it an effortless part of our workflow. This seamless integration is what makes Betterment at Work so beloved for me. The platform provides our team with extra resources like mindfulness exercises, time management tips, and personalized wellness plans, which are incredibly valuable for maintaining work-life balance. The initial setup was straightforward, and the onboarding process was simple, which made it easy for my team to get started without any significant issues.

**What do you dislike about Betterment at Work?**

I think the ability to customize more aspects of the wellness plans could be improved. Sometimes, the general template doesn't fit everyone perfectly.

**What problems is Betterment at Work solving and how is that benefiting you?**

I use Betterment at Work to enhance work-life balance with tools for progress tracking, goal setting, stress management, mental health, and personalized wellness plans, which serve as invaluable resources for my team.

  ### 10. Quick Enrollment and Assistance

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Sarah S. | Office MAnager, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** September 17, 2025

**What do you like best about Betterment at Work?**

The enrollment for new employees is very efficient. It allows me to onboard new hires in moments. I am in Betterment multiple times a week and the websites ease of use is efficient and economical. I don't ever have to look from one tab to another trying to find what I need.

**What do you dislike about Betterment at Work?**

Occasional issues with employees receiving emails and/or delayed emails for enrollment. I prefer to have them sit with me when they first log in but there are times that we have to wait, I resend the invite and we wait more. Employees emails are verified, so I assume this is a communication issue.

**What problems is Betterment at Work solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Ease of enrollment and billing. It has allowed time to interact with new employees instead of sitting and setting up all benefits we offer.

  ### 11. a little back and forth on how to handle paste 401k and forms 5500

**Rating:** 2.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Program Development | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** July 21, 2026

**What do you like best about Betterment at Work?**

simplicity of the website and informational emails

**What do you dislike about Betterment at Work?**

Multiple departments, unclear communication

**What problems is Betterment at Work solving and how is that benefiting you?**

past 401k for employees

  ### 12. If you're with Rippling (or any payroll other than Gusto), pick Betterment for your 401k

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Jacob D. | Director of Development, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** October 16, 2025

**What do you like best about Betterment at Work?**

We love how Betterment does the best job of optimizing low fees & great technology. We recently switched to Rippling as our payroll provider and we looked into the ~40 different 401k providers that integrate with Rippling. We quickly narrowed down the list to the 3 tech-forward companies that most integrate with Rippling (Human Interest, Betterment, Guideline), 2 other newer low-cost options (401GO and Employee Fiduciary), and 2 of the legacy providers (Fidelity and Vanguard). Most of the other options were other legacy providers that simply had higher fees or less brand-name recognition than Fidelity or Vanguard. Of those 7 options, we researched them further, set up calls, and realized that: a) Guideline was recently acquired by Gusto and there's a lot of uncertainty of what's happening to the non-Gusto accounts, b) Human Interest has very high list fees (they charge 72 basis points to the participants for advisory and other fees when Betterment charges 25 basis points). Yes, you can negotiate them down, but there's always the concern that they'll shift you to the listed fees. Plus, they don't have a mobile app (Guideline and Betterment both have highly rated apps), c) 401Go has had 1 review in 2025 on G2 and has very few reviews on their mobile app, d) Employee Fiduciary seems like a great low-cost option if you plan on forever staying in the under 50 employee range (we plan on growing) and they don't have a mobile app, e) Fidelity wouldn't even talk to us (we filled out their form online twice, called them once) - they are more focused on the larger clients. Plus, even if they do talk with you, they charge 50 basis points (that's twice as expensive as Betterment's 25 bp), and f) Vanguard has low flat fees, but it's actually more expensive for new / startup plans. When you're a mid-size plan with a decent amount of assets, then Vanguard's fees are less than many other providers, but you're not actually with Vanguard - you're with Ascensus and any employees who don't have a personal Vanguard account, would use the "ReadySave" app which has pretty bad reviews. We actually were feeling quite annoyed and frustrated going through this identification process because there seemed to be glaring cost or technology issues with most of the providers. Until we had a call with Betterment. Shout-out to Kyle! Thanks for all your help and we're excited to partner with Betterment for their 401k solution.

**What do you dislike about Betterment at Work?**

Not much. Maybe it was their contract was pretty long to read, but that's probably pretty standard for most 401k providers.

**What problems is Betterment at Work solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Betterment is helping launch our 401(k). We picked Betterment because they are the best provider based on the two main qualities we were evaluating: great technology and low fees.

  ### 13. Streamlined Admin Work, User-Friendly, but Needs Faster Issue Resolution

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Ali M. | Operation Maneger, Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** October 20, 2025

**What do you like best about Betterment at Work?**

This system has played a crucial role in greatly reducing our administrative workload. As a result, the company has seen a marked improvement in its financial well-being. Additionally, the system stands out for its user-friendly design, which has made the implementation process even smoother.

**What do you dislike about Betterment at Work?**

While the system is notably easy to use, I have encountered occasional errors and challenges when trying to integrate specific vendors. In addition, I have observed that the response time can be slow when dealing with more complex issues. Lastly, some of my colleagues have mentioned that the withdrawal process tends to be sluggish.

**What problems is Betterment at Work solving and how is that benefiting you?**

The adoption of Betterment at Work has greatly improved our internal processes. This tool has made management more efficient by substantially reducing the time spent on registration, contribution calculations, and transfer tasks. As a result of this increased efficiency, we are now able to allocate more resources to strategic initiatives.

  ### 14. Betterment was incredible to work with and made the onboarding process so easy!

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Jennifer S. | Accounting Manager, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** September 23, 2025

**What do you like best about Betterment at Work?**

That it seamlessly integrates with our payroll provider Gusto

**What do you dislike about Betterment at Work?**

I have not found anything I dislike about Betterment. The program is easy to use and manage and the support we have received during set up and implementation has been above and beyond

**What problems is Betterment at Work solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Our employees have access to their information in real time, with an app that is useful and easy to navigate. They are able to make changes to their own accounts without having to go through me and that is such a time saver. Also the Betterment courses and literature have been helpful in educating our employees about the reasons why investing is important for their future, and how to go about making the best investment choices for their personal situations.

  ### 15. Easy-to-View Automation with Helpful Add-On Services

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Retail | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** July 22, 2026

**What do you like best about Betterment at Work?**

automation, add-on services, and easy to view

**What do you dislike about Betterment at Work?**

not a lot that i can think of, sometimes getting too many emails

**What problems is Betterment at Work solving and how is that benefiting you?**

automation for 401k, easy to read what differences is in roth vs regular, + add ons for the team to use are easy to setup

  ### 16. Quality program and responsive service

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Julie A. | Chief Administrative Officer, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** March 12, 2025

**What do you like best about Betterment at Work?**

I love the Betterment Dashboard and how easy it is to navigate. I also like that I can approve a payroll before it is processed. It's ease of implementation and integration into my payroll system was top notch. Customer support has always been responsive and helpful with all my questions as well.

**What do you dislike about Betterment at Work?**

I don't have any dislikes thus far. I am happy with all the features.

**What problems is Betterment at Work solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Retirement and investment potential for my employees. It is benefiting our small business by the offering of a Safe Harbor plan, which protects us by requiring a 6-month waiting period before employees are eligible for entry. It also requires an employee to work for two consecutive years before they are vested with the employer match.

  ### 17. Clear, Modern UI with Powerful Automation and an Easy-to-Use API

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Shahin M. | Senior Software Engineer, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** February 02, 2026

**What do you like best about Betterment at Work?**

I really liked the user interface because it’s clear, modern, and easy to navigate, and the API is simple to use. I also loved the automation, portfolio linking, and tax loss collection; those features are excellent for me.

**What do you dislike about Betterment at Work?**

I ran into some integration issues, and I didn’t like that customer service didn’t resolve them.

**What problems is Betterment at Work solving and how is that benefiting you?**

It’s an excellent tool that runs in the background while I focus on my code. On top of that, its robust, automated system has been very beneficial, and I find it aesthetically superior to other options.

  ### 18. Betterment at Work transformed our team's communication, ending the information silos

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Adam N. | People Analytics and Insights Manager, Internet, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** September 29, 2025

**What do you like best about Betterment at Work?**

I do like the fact that Betterment at Work assists us in recording the development of our internal knowledge base. It has made it so much easier to track who made what and when which has been essential to keep our team accurate as it grows. Our training materials also have a version history that can also be described as a life-saver, as it ensures that old information does not spread.

**What do you dislike about Betterment at Work?**

Search option might be a little stronger. I have the problem that I can sometimes find particular older documents that I know are there. It would also be nice to be able to have it more easily integrated with our project management software without having to have it custom-written.

**What problems is Betterment at Work solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Our problem was in the way of provided internal communication and sharing of knowledge between our remote teams. With the introduction of Betterment at Work, all people have a focal point where they can get updated policies as well as procedures. This has greatly saved misunderstandings and saved us many hours searching information.

  ### 19. Responsive Team, Clear Guidance—A Great Start with Betterment

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Marketing and Advertising | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** January 23, 2026

**What do you like best about Betterment at Work?**

The team has been great about responding to requests. They explain things very well and have guided us in all aspects where we have needed them. The cost is also much less than we were paying with our previous provider.

**What do you dislike about Betterment at Work?**

So far we do not have any aspects we are unhappy with. In full transparency, we have been with Betterment less than 6 months but it has been great.

**What problems is Betterment at Work solving and how is that benefiting you?**

They provide the 401k management. Without them I would not know how to do any of this stuff. Their webinars are also fantastic.

  ### 20. happy with Betterment 401(k) services thus far

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Jay A. | chief operating officer, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** September 18, 2025

**What do you like best about Betterment at Work?**

after researching a few different 401(k) providers for our small business, I decided to go with Betterment. the 401(k) system easily integrated with our payroll processor which was helpful. the website is easy to use. what thing that was very important to us is that Betterment offers both pre-tax and ROTH 401(k)s for employees. one of my favorite things about Betterment is access to ultra low cost ETFs.

**What do you dislike about Betterment at Work?**

one thing I hope Betterment will add is access to the Mega/ Backdoor ROTH 401(k) which is currently not available.

**What problems is Betterment at Work solving and how is that benefiting you?**

we use Betterment at Work for the 401(k) platform ... we are a small/ newer company so Betterment offered a great, cost effective solution to provide retirement savings vehicle.

  ### 21. Excellent/Simple 401k Plan Administration

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** John G. | CEO, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** September 22, 2025

**What do you like best about Betterment at Work?**

The interface is very simple--allowing employees to control investment choices by simply setting a risk tolerance which equates to a pre-set allocation between stocks/bonds. These choices can auto-adjust via Betterment's algorithm as well. As an administrator, the interface is very simple and modern. It's easy to add new employees, integrate with a Payroll company and upload payroll data on a monthly basis. Support has been easy to work with as well.

**What do you dislike about Betterment at Work?**

When the integration with payroll was advertised it wasn't well-baked and needed some corrections after being established. But support was very helpful in getting that done.

**What problems is Betterment at Work solving and how is that benefiting you?**

It allows us to offer a great benefit of a well managed 401k plan to our employees.

  ### 22. Simple, Smart, and Stress-Free Investing

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Brian P. | CFO, Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** September 24, 2025

**What do you like best about Betterment at Work?**

Betterment makes investing incredibly simple and stress-free. I love being able to set goals—like retirement, a safety net, or general investing—and have the platform automatically create and manage a diversified portfolio for me. The interface is clean, intuitive, and easy to navigate. Features like automated rebalancing and tax-loss harvesting give me confidence that my money is being managed efficiently without me having to constantly monitor it. The low, transparent fees are also a huge plus compared to traditional advisors.

**What do you dislike about Betterment at Work?**

Betterment isn’t really built for active traders, so if you want to pick individual stocks or make frequent trades, it’s not the right fit. That said, this isn’t really a drawback for me since the whole point is long-term, hands-off investing.

**What problems is Betterment at Work solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Decision fatigue: You don’t have to figure out what to invest in—Betterment builds a diversified portfolio automatically.

Time management: It handles rebalancing, tax-loss harvesting, and other portfolio upkeep you’d otherwise need to do manually (or pay someone more to do).

Financial planning: Goal-based tools help you connect investing with real-life needs (retirement, safety net, big purchases) instead of just “throwing money into the market.”

Cost efficiency: It provides professional-level money management at a fraction of the cost of traditional advisors.

Peace of mind: You know your money is being managed responsibly, even if you don’t have the time, expertise, or desire to trade actively.

  ### 23. Modern, Admin & Employee-Friendly 401(k) Platform

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Liz D. | HR Generalist / Global Mobility, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** September 19, 2025

**What do you like best about Betterment at Work?**

We've had a great experience using Betterment as our 401(k) provider. One of the biggest advantages is how seamlessly it integrates with our payroll system — setup and ongoing contributions have been smooth and low-maintenance, which is a huge win for a small HR team.

Betterment also brings great value to employees. The platform allows them to sync outside accounts, so the financial advice they're getting isn't in a silo — it's tailored to their full financial picture. That kind of holistic guidance is especially important in retirement platforms.

All around, it’s a modern, flexible solution that makes retirement planning feel approachable for our team — and manageable for our admins.

**What do you dislike about Betterment at Work?**

Betterment has some limitations by not offering more advanced features. For example, Mega Backdoor Roth conversions; which employees have starting to ask about. For companies with employees seeking more complex retirement strategies, that may be something to consider.

**What problems is Betterment at Work solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Improving client support.

  ### 24. Betterment Review

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Wholesale | Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** September 17, 2025

**What do you like best about Betterment at Work?**

The Betterment team is available to assist with any issues or questions I may have. They also provide valuable resources for learning about 401(k) plans, including webinars and other educational tools. The platform is extremely user-friendly for both admins and employees. Many employees log in weekly to check their accounts and make changes as needed. Also, Betterment integrates seamlessly with our HRIS system, automatically updating any changes to employee contribution rates without requiring manual payroll adjustments.

**What do you dislike about Betterment at Work?**

Betterment has proven to be flexible and supportive. Every team member I’ve worked with has been extremely helpful. While some processes and details were unclear during implementation, the team worked quickly to answer our questions and provide guidance once we were fully set up.

**What problems is Betterment at Work solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Betterment has greatly increased our company’s participation rate. With the learning tools provided and a support team that is always accessible, our employees can ask questions, attend webinars, and build their portfolios to set themselves up for savings and a secure retirement plan. This benefits the company as we ultimately want our employees to be satisfied with the platforms we provide, which supports their longevity with the company.

  ### 25. Functional Software that leaves something to be desired in terms of support

**Rating:** 1.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Financial Services | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** September 18, 2025

**What do you like best about Betterment at Work?**

Betterment at work is a very simple, plug-and-play solution for a business owner who knows exactly what they need, how to file form 5500 on their own, and doesn't want anything customized. It is less expensive than other solutions that we have used, and the user experience - particularly for customers of betterment - is much simpler than what is offered by other, smaller third party administrators.

**What do you dislike about Betterment at Work?**

Betterment at Work has frequently dropped the ball for our clients when it comes to filing required forms in a timely manner, reminding business owners of their duties as the administrator, etc. The Customer Support does not always respond in a timely manner - often it takes a few attempts to get a response. Overall, for just a few dollars more than what Betterment at Work charges, a business owner can use a full-service 401k TPA and have the comfort of a provider who is willing to take on actual liability for the plan and its administration. This is what caused us to stop using Betterment at Work in all cases.

**What problems is Betterment at Work solving and how is that benefiting you?**

The tool is a relatively easy to implement 401k plan for a business owner who may need to implement one, wants a cheap solution and is not looking for any customizations or a relationship with an active support team. This platform benefits us in that there is often name recognition with Betterment and clients appreciate the ease of use for the end user.

  ### 26. Simplifies and encourages saving for Retirement

**Reviewed Date:** August 01, 2024

**What do you like best about Betterment at Work?**

Betterment at work has fantastic investment options that are low-cost. They are customizable for those that want to customize their portfolios and they are pre-built for those who don't. Since using B@W, we have almost 100% participation in our 401k and employees are contributing more than ever. We have decreased our cost to our business while also decreasing expense ratios for employees. Our customer support representative is always prompt and helpful. The software itself is extremely easy to use and was easy to implement on the business side. Integrates great with RunADP

**What do you dislike about Betterment at Work?**

No downsides noticed to this point. Have been using for a few years.

**What problems is Betterment at Work solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Betterment at work does almost all of the legwork for getting our employees to save and helping them invest what they do save. Previously we had lots of employees that never took the time to sign up for the 401k. Even the employees who did take the time to sign up sometimes never actually chose investments to get their money working for them. Betterment fills in the gaps and makes sure everyone is properly saving for retirement whether employees put in effort or not.

  ### 27. Highly recommend Betterment!

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Casandra W. | Human Resources Director, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** September 18, 2025

**What do you like best about Betterment at Work?**

We have been a satisfied client of Betterment for over four years, and I can confidently say that our partnership has been nothing short of amazing.

When our company was just starting out, we began using their services, and they have been an invaluable asset in providing our employees with excellent retirement options. The implementation was super simple; the Betterment platform is both user-friendly and straightforward for our employees.

From an administrative perspective, the integration with our payroll provider is top-notch. The systems sync automatically and literally on the same day, so we don't have to wait a week for updates.

We highly recommend Betterment to any company seeking a reliable and efficient financial partner.

**What do you dislike about Betterment at Work?**

Early on, as a small employer, we did not have a dedicated account manager and would email a general support team for assistance.

As part of the feedback we provided, I'm pleased to say that is no longer the case. We now have a wonderful, dedicated account manager who proactively takes care of any needs that arise.

**What problems is Betterment at Work solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Betterment at Work provides educational resources for our employees and helps us to stay up-to-date on helpful tax strategies and investments.

  ### 28. Easy 401(k) Administration with Helpful Automation

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Insurance | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** September 18, 2025

**What do you like best about Betterment at Work?**

Betterment at Work makes managing our company 401(k) simple and efficient. The platform is easy to navigate both for me as the administrator and for employees. I especially value how it syncs seamlessly with Gusto, which eliminates the need to manually set up payroll deductions. When a new employee becomes eligible, Betterment automatically handles all of the communication so I don’t have to set reminders or keep manual checklists. The system also sends timely notifications when action is needed, which keeps everything on track. Overall, it saves me time and gives me peace of mind that nothing is slipping through the cracks.

**What do you dislike about Betterment at Work?**

During the initial setup a few years ago, we had to do some troubleshooting, but the support team was responsive and got everything resolved. One thing that would be helpful is if I could see more detail on the exact communication that employees receive. That way I’d be better prepared to answer their questions.

**What problems is Betterment at Work solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Betterment at Work takes the hassle out of managing a 401(k) plan. It syncs with Gusto so I don’t have to worry about setting up payroll deductions, and it automatically handles all communication when employees become eligible. That means I don’t need to track reminders, send emails, or keep manual checklists. Overall, it saves me time, reduces the chance of errors, and makes offering a retirement plan to employees much simpler.

  ### 29. From a TPA Standpoint, implementing a plan with Betterment was quick and simple.

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Consumer Services | Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** September 18, 2025

**What do you like best about Betterment at Work?**

Plan Provision entry was done using an in-depth spreadsheet provided to us within a week or so of the plan sponsor signing their service agreements with Betterment. The Spreadsheet made it easy to complete alongside the plan document, there was no issue of logging in once an account was set up for me, documents, education, notices and resources are easily accessible, and the implementation team was very helpful and supportive of all my questions on our very first setup with Betterment. Overall, from start to allocation of transferred assets, implementation took 3 months which is the best timeline you can hope for with a takeover.

**What do you dislike about Betterment at Work?**

From a TPA Standpoint, I'm not sure yet if each plan will need its own login or if we will be able to select from a list of clients as we do with other recordkeeping platforms.

**What problems is Betterment at Work solving and how is that benefiting you?**

I have only implemented one takeover plan with Betterment, so I'm not real big on any industry issues they may be solving but the plan provision entry on a well designed spreadsheet was very helpful.

  ### 30. Modern, Robust, Experience-Focused 401(k) and Investment Platform

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Information Technology and Services | Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** August 07, 2024

**What do you like best about Betterment at Work?**

Both the admin and employee-facing platforms are extremely easy-to-use and full of excellent features. The admin area has all of the necessary functions, like employee management and payroll uploads, along with simple workflows for things like approving loans and distributions. The employee portal is overflowing with functionality beyond simply managing their 401(k) account and investments - they offer high-yield savings accounts, options for opening IRAs, learning materials, and even connections to other accounts so employees can use the tool to get a complete financial picture and better manage their finances all in one place.

The support team is fantastic. Our account managers have always been helpful and responsive, and our latest one is a well-tenured member of the Betterment team who is clearly very knowledgeable and will be a great resource for us to ensure we are managing our plan effectively and in full compliance.

We've recently implemented carrier feeds to make managing our plan even easier after we switched to a new HRIS for 2025. The process has been incredibly smooth and effective, which I expected to be the case based on all my other experiences with Betterment so far. They offer integrations with numerous HRIS platforms, and they are constantly working to add more over time to make managing payroll processing as simple as possible.

**What do you dislike about Betterment at Work?**

Having used many other platforms in past lives, Betterment far surpasses them, even the big names like Fidelity. I honestly can't think of anything to dislike at this point!

**What problems is Betterment at Work solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Betterment has vastly improved employee engagement with our 401(k) plan through it's user-friendly design and supplemental features that encourage employees to regularly log in to their account. Because of this engagement, administrative tasks have been minimized, freeing up valuable HR time to focus on other initiatives and activities.

  ### 31. Seamless Retirement Benefit with Strong Support and Easy Integration

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Biotechnology | Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** September 19, 2025

**What do you like best about Betterment at Work?**

Betterment at Work has been an excellent partner in offering retirement benefits to our employees. The platform is very easy to implement and integrates smoothly with our existing systems, minimizing the lift for our team. Day-to-day administration is straightforward, and employees consistently find the interface intuitive. Their customer support team is highly responsive and proactive, which has made both the rollout and ongoing management much easier. The range of investment features strikes a strong balance between flexibility for employees and ease of oversight for us as the employer.

**What do you dislike about Betterment at Work?**

There is very little to dislike. While the reporting and analytics meet most of our needs, additional customization options would make it even stronger for employers who want more granular insights.

**What problems is Betterment at Work solving and how is that benefiting you?**

We previously didn't have an integration in place this resulted in a heavy admin burden on the team. We're really excited to have officially rolled out our integration this week.

  ### 32. Solid and simple company

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Information Technology and Services | Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** September 17, 2025

**What do you like best about Betterment at Work?**

As an employee and admin user, I believe that the platform is very clear and clean. It is user friendly and allows for clear understanding of what is needed to enroll new employees. It is also very clear in the invoices that are provided for processing management fees. On the employee side, the cycle updates for contributions are very clear and allow easy log in access directly from contribution email. Aside from onboarding, terminations are made easy from previous employees who submit to distribute their account and equally easy and clear to process those requests within the platform. It does not require constant engagement that require employees or admins to log in every day. While we do process contributions every two weeks, we do not need to engage as often as other platforms. Plain and simple, it does what it's supposed to do without added bells and whistles that complicate other platforms.

**What do you dislike about Betterment at Work?**

There has been confusion surrounding employee statements and how that information is relayed for total company contributions.

**What problems is Betterment at Work solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Betterment has created a clear platform that makes managing 401k plan enrollment very simple. It provides updates and notifications for new employees during the onboarding process that serve as a good reminder to add them to the system. It is helpful to have the system integrate with our own payroll system that essentially frees up data entry on one more platform.

  ### 33. Exceptional Customer Service Experience with Betterment

**Reviewed Date:** March 13, 2025

**What do you like best about Betterment at Work?**

Exceptional Customer Service Experience with Betterment

Betterment is our organization's new financial investment platform, and I just had an incredible customer care experience! I was contacted directly and had the opportunity to meet face-to-face with a representative to address questions from various staff members.

I had the pleasure of speaking with Doris, who went above and beyond to ensure I felt confident and informed. She took ample time to educate me, guide me through the entire process, and patiently answer every question. Doris didn't just provide information—she made sure I fully understood everything and felt 100% satisfied with her responses.

In my 20 years of working with major financial institutions like T. Rowe Price and Fidelity, I've never experienced such personalized and dedicated support. Thanks to Doris and the Betterment team, I now feel well-equipped to advocate for our employees and staff with confidence.

Thank you, Betterment, for setting such a high standard in customer care!

**What do you dislike about Betterment at Work?**

I've not witnessed anything that would be considered a downsize of using Betterment.

**What problems is Betterment at Work solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Betterment at Work is transforming the way we approach financial wellness and retirement planning. It simplifies the investment process, making it more accessible and user-friendly for both employees and administrators. One of the biggest challenges in workplace financial benefits is ensuring that employees feel confident and informed about their options—Betterment is solving that by providing a seamless, intuitive platform with personalized guidance.

For me, the biggest benefit has been the exceptional customer support and education. The team takes the time to walk through every step, ensuring clarity and confidence in decision-making. This not only empowers me to make informed financial choices but also allows me to be a better advocate for our employees. Having a platform that prioritizes ease of use, transparency, and financial well-being is truly a game-changer!

  ### 34. Couldn't pay us to move back to our legacy 401k platform

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Publishing | Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** September 17, 2025

**What do you like best about Betterment at Work?**

Significant value for money compared with legacy platforms especially in small-medium business market. For participants, the reviews / response has been tremendous in particular with the app design, education and ease of use. As a plan sponsor / administrator, we have found Betterment at Work to excel in onboarding and ongoing account management as well integrating well with our payroll platform. Finally, we have found Betterment at Work to be a very good manager of regulatory reporting and compliance.

**What do you dislike about Betterment at Work?**

This is minor but the only dislike that I have is the lack of "in plan ROTH conversions" + "after tax contributions" (this is the Mega Backdoor ROTH) in the base plan.

**What problems is Betterment at Work solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Betterment at Work is a high "value for money" partner to a key compensation and retention program for our business -- the 401-K plan. Through partnering with Betterment at Work, our employee participants have enjoyed low-cost and very well-managed investment portfolios that match closely participants risk profiles. We have received numerous positive reviews about our 401-K plan as well as Betterment at Work's platform and investment portfolios.

  ### 35. Betterment at Work

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Health, Wellness and Fitness | Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** September 17, 2025

**What do you like best about Betterment at Work?**

What is most helpful with Betterment at Work, is that the platform is so easy to navigate. I was a bit anxious about learning yet another platform for our business. However, it was nothing like I thought it would be, in terms of being a hassle. We were even able to add our Accountant on to the platform to handle the payroll portion of things. He's been able to use the platform without any complaints. They even go as far as sending me email templates to share with my staff, regarding 401k and its benefits, this too is most helpful. I would definitely refer others.

**What do you dislike about Betterment at Work?**

One of the downsides is, there isn't a phone number to contact a representative when you are in tight spot. However, there is an email address provided, but every now and again you'd like to speak to someone verbally.

**What problems is Betterment at Work solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Prior to collaborating with Betterment at Work, we were really wanting to implement a 401k program. Our staff had been asking about us offering this as a benefit to them. To our surprise, Betterment as Work reached out and gave us an overview and answered all of our questions. They were very patient and most helpful and now we're able to provide this great benefit, satisfying our staff's request.

  ### 37. Ease of integration

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Debby K. | Controller, Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** September 17, 2025

**What do you like best about Betterment at Work?**

Integration between Betterment and Rippling US PEO is excellent. The two systems work together seamlessly, which saves a significant amount of administrative time and effort. The 360-degree payroll integration means that tasks like managing 401(k) contributions and employee eligibility are largely automated, eliminating the need for manual data entry and reducing the risk of errors.

**What do you dislike about Betterment at Work?**

Betterment should implement a feature that allows new 401(k) contributors to input their year-to-date (YTD) contributions from previous employers. This would help prevent accidental over-contributions and ensure customers stay within the annual IRS limit. More to the customer experience, Betterment might even consider developing a system that tracks a person's Social Security number (SSN) to automatically carry over their year-to-date 401(k) contributions when they switch employers. This would create a seamless transition and prevent customers from exceeding the annual contribution cap.

**What problems is Betterment at Work solving and how is that benefiting you?**

The integration helps with manual errors from uploading payroll records on 401K and Roth 401k contributions.

  ### 38. Great for the employees but the support for admins has been lacking

**Rating:** 3.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Computer Software | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** March 21, 2025

**What do you like best about Betterment at Work?**

I think the site is fairly simply to use which is important when not everyone at a company is well versed in investing options. Other than support, everything functions like you'd expect.

**What do you dislike about Betterment at Work?**

The support from the admin side of things has been incredibly frustrating. There would be an integration issue or some other urgent request that would take a few days or even a week to simply get a response. As an employee, you have a phone number to call but admins are at the whims of emails and attempting to schedule calls with our CSMs, who sometimes are booked up for days which causes issues to drag. Multiple times I've had to resort to calling the employee support line and asking the people there if they can push the admin email team to respond to me.

We recently had an employee let us know that they over contributed to their 401k last year and when they reached out to support, support told them to contact their hr team (as if there is anything we can do without BM's support team getting involved) rather than actually getting the ball rolling on the solution.

Our new CSM seems to be more responsive so I increased my score a bit.

**What problems is Betterment at Work solving and how is that benefiting you?**

They are our 401k provider

  ### 39. Easy-to-Use Platform That Makes Saving Simple

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Jasmine S. | Sr. Manager, Total Rewards and People Operations, Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** September 17, 2025

**What do you like best about Betterment at Work?**

I really appreciate how intuitive and user-friendly the platform is. The design makes it simple to navigate, track my progress, and understand my retirement savings. The automated features, like recurring contributions and personalized recommendations, make saving effortless. I also like the transparency in showing how my money is growing, which motivates me to stay on track.

**What do you dislike about Betterment at Work?**

There’s not much to dislike, but I think the platform could offer more educational resources and personalized financial planning tools. Having deeper insights into long-term projections and more guidance around investment strategies would make it even more valuable.

**What problems is Betterment at Work solving and how is that benefiting you?**

As both an employee and an HR admin, I’ve seen how Betterment at Work removes complexity from retirement planning. For employees, it makes saving effortless through automation and clear tracking, which reduces stress around financial planning. From the admin side, the platform is easy to manage and integrates smoothly with our HR processes. It simplifies plan administration, provides helpful reporting, and cuts down on the back-and-forth questions we’d otherwise handle manually. Overall, it saves time for the HR team while giving employees a straightforward, confidence-boosting way to invest in their future.

  ### 40. Transparent and Simple

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Construction | Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** May 02, 2024

**What do you like best about Betterment at Work?**

From an employer perspective I like the look of the platform and easy visibility. Well organized.
Customer service has always been very helpful and polite.
Notifications are consistent.
As an employee I think the app is simple and I like how I can link all my accounts and see my values.

**What do you dislike about Betterment at Work?**

As the employer the contact availablity is frustrating. All communications must be in the form of email and if I need to speak with someone direclty I am required to request a phone call appointment by email if we want to speak with someone and then the issue must sit until the appointed time, could be several days.

Lack of integration with QuickBooks online makes completing the payroll deposits very time consuming. Appreciate the template, but with an employee base now in excess of 150 and our participants growing I have to use multiple exported reports to complete the information in the Betterment template bi weekly.

*Update, since this last review we have been assigned a direct account manager who has been very responsive and helpful to resolve any account / employee issues we have had.

  ### 42. Empowering Financial Literacy with Betterment at Work

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Michelle G. | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** September 17, 2025

**What do you like best about Betterment at Work?**

I love that Betterment provides a reliable, sustainable money management tool that empowers our employees to plan for their futures, such as buying houses and planning for retirement. I also appreciate the feature that allows employees to have personal financial advisers and tools to easily manage and adjust their financial strategies. The ability to enhance our employees' financial literacy and security is a significant benefit.

**What do you dislike about Betterment at Work?**

We find it difficult to schedule time with Betterment's financial advisors as their availability is often quite far out. Additionally, I think there could be improvements in providing more customized services specifically regarding staff trainings about financial literacy and optimizing 401(k) plans, which could be more regularly scheduled for our team rather than relying on employees to sign up individually.

**What problems is Betterment at Work solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Betterment at Work provides reliable financial management and literacy, helping employees align their 401(k)s with goals like buying homes and retirement, enhancing their futures beyond paychecks.

**What do you like best about Betterment at Work?**

Betterment seamlessly integrated with our payroll system. It's easy to use for both administrators and users. As a user I can log into my account and make any changes I desire or get the support needed. On the admin side it's easy to use and they handle all compliance messages/communications.

**What do you dislike about Betterment at Work?**

Moving funds from an old/different 401(k) takes manual work, but that's just the name of the game and depends on your previous provider. Nothing negative to say on Betterment.

**What problems is Betterment at Work solving and how is that benefiting you?**

So So easy to make changes on the user end and manage my own 401(k)
As an admin they take care of all communication to employees and integrate with our payroll system.

**Official Response from Nicole Bliman:**

> Hi there,

Thank you for your feedback. At Betterment, we are always striving to do things better (as our name suggests!). Based on similar feedback from clients like you, we have made several significant improvements we thought you’d like to hear about:

Plan administrators can now schedule a call to speak directly with their support team member. You can find the correct contact information by logging in to your sponsor dashboard at betterment.com/work, selecting Resources in the left-hand nav, then Support.

Betterment at Work integrates with more than 150 payroll providers, and is continually working on adding more! Check out the full list of providers here: betterment.com/work/find-payroll-provider. If you see yours, but do not have the integration set up, please contact our payroll team at payrollsupport@betterment.com.

We strives to make managing your 401(k) plan simple, but we know it can still be challenging if it’s just one of many responsibilities on your plate! Check out our new managing your 401(k) plan landing page, where you’ll find several tutorials on mastering common sponsor tasks: betterment.com/work/manage-your-401k-plan.

Please let us know if you have any additional comments or questions. In fact, we’re so dedicated to improving our relationships with clients such as yourself, we invite you to reach out to our Sr. Director of Client Experience, Chelsey Lubin. You can reach her at chelsey.lubin@betterment.com.

Have a great day,
The Betterment at Work team

  ### 47. Excellent 401(k) Platform with Outstanding Support

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Information Technology and Services | Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** September 18, 2025

**What do you like best about Betterment at Work?**

Betterment makes retirement planning easy for both employees and administrators. The platform is intuitive, modern, and user-friendly, which helps encourage employee participation. What really sets Betterment apart is the personalized service — our dedicated representative goes above and beyond to answer questions quickly and provide thoughtful guidance. That level of support has been invaluable and makes the entire experience smooth.

**What do you dislike about Betterment at Work?**

There isn't much to dislike. Some employees new to investing would appreciate even more step-by-step education materials, but the resources provided are strong overall.

**What problems is Betterment at Work solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Betterment streamlines the entire 401(k) process — from onboarding new employees to managing contributions and investment options. It reduces administrative headaches and gives our team confidence that their retirement savings are being managed wisely. Having such an accessible platform has boosted participation rates and made it easier for us to offer a strong benefits package as a small to mid-sized company.

  ### 48. Great 401(k) provider

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Financial Services | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** September 18, 2025

**What do you like best about Betterment at Work?**

Here is just a small list of why I think Betterment is one of the best providers to work with.
`Low fees such as recordkeeping, fund expense ratios, and administrative fees
`Transparent pricing
`Good investment options of different styles like index, target date, and actively managed
`Reliable customer service
`Scalable/adaptable offerings depending on business size

**What do you dislike about Betterment at Work?**

I honestly don’t have anything bad to say about this company. They’ve been professional, reliable, and easy to work with from the start. The process was smooth, communication was clear, and they delivered exactly what they promised. I would recommend them without hesitation.

**What problems is Betterment at Work solving and how is that benefiting you?**

At the moment, I don’t have any issues. Betterment at Work has provided a smooth, user-friendly experience, which makes managing my retirement plan simple and stress-free. ### 49. Very user-friendly, good customer service and some issues with establishment of offerings

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Michael B. | Director of Operations, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** September 17, 2025

**What do you like best about Betterment at Work?**

Betterment is very easy to use. The platform is fairly self-explanatory for both admin and user and any time I've needed to get in touch with someone, they have been prompt and helpful in responses.

**What do you dislike about Betterment at Work?**

We have had some discrepancies in the way that our account was originally set up. It seemed like those that were helping us to establish our account didn't seek to fully understand our situation and needs before setting up the account and then some aspects of the account were deemed to be irrevocable and unchangeable.

**What problems is Betterment at Work solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Betterment has allowed us an easy and user-friendly way to manage our 401k benefits for our organization

  ### 50. Very Easy To Use!

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Jennifer H. | VP of HR, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** September 17, 2025

**What do you like best about Betterment at Work?**

Betterment is a great, easy-to-use 401 (k) platform. Our employees are able to find information quickly on their accounts. Betterment does a great job at sending information to our employees on additional services, tips, and updates. They can do transactions and get responses back faster. The customer service team has been great. The implementation process went very smoothly.

**What do you dislike about Betterment at Work?**

The processing of our deposits seems to take a little longer. Overall we dont have any concerns.

**What problems is Betterment at Work solving and how is that benefiting you?**

More transparency of account information for our employees. Better customer support and response time from the Administrator. Communication to our employees on signing up for the 401k and easy to enroll in.
