That is a matter of taste. I don't particularly appreciate how Mendeley changed their interface ignoring the users' feedback. I love how Zotero introduces features, and especially the community can write custom plugins. Otherwise, both serve the same purpose of managing a bibliography, and it is better to use one or another than not use such software.

Without a subscription, you can search for references online across a wide range of online databases, add them to your Word document, and create a bibliography. If you have a Paperpile subscription, you can also cite references from your library.
