The setup is straightforward and there's nothing I could not figure out by just reading the online documentation. The data deduplication and compression is pretty good, even if your storage array doesn't support this feature, it's done on the Veeam server itself. You can send local backup to AWS directly, that's a real plus for us to be able to have off-prem backup copies. **What do you dislike about Veeam Data Platform?** I would like Veeam Backup & Replication to have an integrated functionnality to generate reports of all the backup jobs and copy jobs at once, it seem to be a feature available only if you install Veeam ONE. **What problems is Veeam Data Platform solving and how is that benefiting you?** We had different softwares to take backups of our systems, I installed Veeam Backup & Replication to centralize the backups and to deduplicate the data, I'm really pleased with the result. We can create backup jobs, and replication jobs as well as tape jobs. We can schedule backup jobs as we want. The portal clearly shows the status of backup jobs. So it is easy for us to determine if there is an issue. The reporting feature is excellent and offers a brief description of all backup jobs in the past several months. The backup restoration process is also easy. We have critical data, and so needed a reliable backup solution. Otherwise, it will be a disaster for us if the datacenter failed and we have no backups. After conducting many kinds of research, and based on recommendations, management decided to choose Veeam backup and replication. They provided a reliable backup solution for a reasonable price. Pre-sales team is ok, and the deployment team did a great job according to our infrastructure and requirements. When considering technical support, there was some time to provide a solution quickly. The setup was seamless and it has not required us to fix any issues since we started using it. Mainly using the virtual machine backup tools, I find that this is simply a must have for virtual environments. The granularity of the restores is particularly helpful, especially when dealing with large file systems. The GUI for the B&R app is simple to use and setting up new back up tasks is pretty straight forward. It does take a little while to get used to how they set up their backups, using the 3 2 1 method, but once you have an understanding of that, it become vital to the backup operations. When compared to other backup products I've used from other vendors, the choice to me is quite clear to use Veeam. I've found other backup products tend to have clunky UIs and sometimes unreliable backups. I'm also a fan of backup to disk and cloud over tape, which often can cause it's own problems. The speed of restore from Veeam is another benefit that I've found to be really helpful, as often when a user reports a file is missing they need it back immediately. Something that's not always possible when dealing with tape backups, even though Veeam can do that as well. I had used this previously to back up physical machines as well, when dealing with older 2003 servers that had yet to be decommissioned. That resolved a lot of headaches to keep us going through until they were migrated. **What do you dislike about Veeam Data Platform?** They can sting you with their support contract pricing. Backups are reliable. They offer the offloading of backups to a cloud provider, but it's not super intuitive. There's a free local computer backup agent to backup local PCs to the same location as our cluster. **What do you dislike about Veeam Data Platform?** There is reliance on a local storage medium at the moment. The functionality around SOBR did not seem well documented unless you work with a third party vendor such as Exagrid. There was quite a bit of tuning required to get our large backups to fully dedupe as expected. We've been attempting to expand our licensing and have had difficulty getting an engineer on the phone to discuss our needs. Licensing for anything beyond 6 CPU sockets is a large jump. **Recommendations to others considering Veeam Data Platform:** Speak with a storage vendor at the same time. Since this is a software based backup solution, you are not tied to a single appliance, and it is much easier to scale Veeam with the proper implementation. **What do you dislike about Veeam Data Platform?** The wealth of configuration can cause issues with engineers not totally familiar with the setup and use of Veeam. It is important to carefully review the design and implementation of Veeam to ensure that it is completed properly. It's progressively gotten better and better. Additionally, the new rollback feature is stellar as is being able to test in a test environment outside of production. **What do you dislike about Veeam Data Platform?** There isn't much. Mostly small nit picks like the job delete and edit button are right beside each other in the right click menu although there is a confirmation prompt so you don't accidentally delete a job but they're still a little close for comfort. They started about ten years ago as a product to back-up VMWare virtual machines, but now you can backup even physical servers and file shares. You can use various options for backup repositories(destinations to store your backup files), such as file shares, Windows, and Linux machines, deduplicating appliances. Even tape recorders are supported. If your virtual machines are residing at the storage appliances such as NetApp, Veeam can use storage snapshots to back up your virtual machines even faster. Never mind the backup, the software effectively handles the replication of the virtual machines between data centers, so you could be sure that your infrastructure is protected at its best. And even if you're a virtualization enthusiast, like me, the software will suit your home lab needs at its fullest. They even provide a full-featured free version for the small non-commercial deployments. **What do you dislike about Veeam Data Platform?** The software is pricey, it requires a Windows server to run the Veeam Backup and Replication service and console which are the key components of every deployment. The licensing model becomes more and more complicated. Are environment between two companies includes VMWare, Hyper-V and a few physical servers. Every platform and need is covered for us. Replication between sites was the easiest I've ever experienced. Restores, what few that have been needed, have been straightforward and accurate every time. The Backup Validator product has added another level of confidence that the data we want to backup is indeed being backed up. VMOne has also proven useful with its monitoring capabilities that otherwise would only be available in a much more expensive product from another company. With just implementing version 10, there are even more features that we plan to evaluate in the future that, if they work as advertised, should save even more time from mundane maintenance tasks on the virtual machines. Almost all of the questions that we had in setting up and using the product were found in their knowledge base and we have only had to leverage support a few time which shows how well thought out the product and supporting documentation processes are. **What do you dislike about Veeam Data Platform?** We haven't run into it yet, because we're not quite at 3 years for our Veeam usage, but the price increase year over year is something that we are aware of. This solution is also a great teaching tool for any young system administrators who are new to backing up and restoring VM's. It's built in wizard lay out all of the necessary information allowing for any admin to orgainzed when creating backup jobs as well as tracking them through logs. As we backup servers in one datacenter we are able to easily replicate and restore them into other datacenters we have integrated with Veeam. Not only does VEEAM do this well, it is extremely efficient and has allowed us to reallocate storage from a previous system that was extremely vendor specific. We have also been pleasantly surprised on how the VEEAM infrastructure works with our HP Nimble arrays for storage snapshots and replication. We have three main data centers across the country and VEEAM handles the replication between these sites flawlessly. Another aspect that has been an unexpected success is the ability to archive older restore points to various cloud infrastructures that were already existing in AWS and Azure. Job creation, duplication, and replication are all configured easily through wizards that anyone can understand, without having to create so many different aspects as in other products. Technical support has been amazing and the longest I have waited for a response (me personally) is 2 hours. But, for full disclosure, after having VEEAM in production for over a year now, I have only used support twice for configuration questions. **What do you dislike about Veeam Data Platform?** The only thing I would like to see more of is training on the software. The Availability Suite can do so may things, that it is hard to grasp the functionality over the initial introduction to the software. We were on another platform and eager to move, so the training may have been rushed on our part. **Recommendations to others considering Veeam Data Platform:** Take advantage of all of retraining and webinars they provide because a lot of the functionality that you have to pay for in other Suites is already there and included. **What problems is Veeam Data Platform solving and how is that benefiting you?** We have solved many issues, including being able to easily backup and restore from Linux based operating systems without the use of any third party or additional software in our VMWare environment.
