They used to offer fast helpful support over the phone with a quick 1 minute verification, and now there is twenty-to-thirty minutes of verifying whether our account has paid for support, then finally speaking to a person whos english is not their first, or even second language. **What problems is Unitrends Backup and Recovery solving and how is that benefiting you?** We use this for file level recovery, and a few bare metal recovery solutions. This would be one of our solutions of three, covering different stages of backup levels. Unitrends Software UB is what I use to recover files that have become corrupt, deleted, or accidentally modified. I can do so very quickly, minimizing downtime for our end users. I use a virtual Unitrends appliance, and it reliably lets me know when there are updates, so I can keep everything up to date. I find restorations fairly easy to set up, and I appreciate the ability to restore to a separate virtual server rather than overwriting the existing one. It's great that I can set up retention policies across all the backups or have different policies for each server. I also appreciate that the backups happen smoothly with little or minimal intervention. **What do you dislike about Unitrends Backup and Recovery?** With the virtual appliance version, I find it frustrating that in a virtual environment, where you can normally move virtual servers from one physical host to another or take snapshots of virtual machines, you are not allowed to do that with the virtual Unitrends appliance, as it will corrupt things. In a VMware environment, the snapshot process is so good and reliable, you can move almost any virtual server at any time. But you cannot do that with the Unitrends virtual appliance virtual server. It would be nice if the system did a better job of notifying before the disk space becomes an issue. Recovering from a system where you run out of space interrupts backups and requires Unitrends support team assistance. This is where you get to select any of the available image based backups you have made and boot it up on the appliance itself (if you have one as we do) or on any hypervisor. This can be done either in audit mode to check the backup image or in productive mode as a disaster recovery scenario! **What do you dislike about Unitrends Backup and Recovery?** It takes a bit longer than expected for the fixes for identified bugs to be released. **What problems is Unitrends Backup and Recovery solving and how is that benefiting you?** Unitrends Backup and Recovery is our main backup solution for all our on-premise servers. Once you have setup your backup jobs you are done. All is automated. Backups can be stored in the local storage if you have a backup appliance as we do. I'm not sure when this changed, but in the past, when the device was full, it would clear out the oldest backups in order to complete a new backup. A few months ago, my device decided to just arbitrarily delete the most recent 2 months of backups in order to create space. That certainly was not expected and tech support says that is now "normal". The deployment process is very painless (when it works) with Datto RMM integration. The restore UI in the web portal is incredibly intuitive and works incredibly well. **What do you dislike about Unitrends Backup and Recovery?** There are many technical issues I have with it, but easily the thing that causes me the most trouble on a daily basis is the fact that the dashboard sorts all devices by hostname by default. I don't know hostnames for all of our clients devices off the top of my head. I have to change the sorting to "organization" every time I open the dashboard. There are other mildly annoying things, like the inability to adjust throttle settings on individual devices without creating an entirely new policy. We've created an unthrottled policy to temporarily use when devices need to be unthrottled (ie getting an initial backup on a device that's in our shop) but it would be very nice to be able to just say "unthrottle this device for 24 hours" without having to manually switch around backup policies. There is also just the fact that the UI is generally pretty unintuitive based on all of the other techs here that don't have to use it that frequently. Incredibly frustrating, but ultimately kind of a "death by 1000 papercuts" situation. There are actual problems that aren't just annoyances that occur multiple times a day, like the lack of any troubleshooting info that I can find for devices that have thrown errors or aren't backing up despite being online. There's also the fact that, from what I've gathered from the support tickets I've created, most troubleshooting has to be done while fully accessing the target PC (either in person or via remote desktop). Most of our clients hate getting a call saying "hey we need to interrupt your work day to poke around and fix your backups" and and up having us put it off for days/weeks if it doesn't have regular active hours that we can work around. **What problems is Unitrends Backup and Recovery solving and how is that benefiting you?** It solves the fact that Datto Endpoint Backup V1 was missing tons of crucial features. The image agent uses VSS Aware and VSS Full to preserve logs, truncate logs, and quiesce applications like Exchange and SQL for application consistency. The ability to gain remote access to the applicance tunnelled through the cloud management interface has been a plus. **What do you dislike about Unitrends Backup and Recovery?** We were surprised on arrival that the actual amount of physical storage space for backups on the Unit was not as much as advertised (to a deficit of around 20%) due to a large OS partition. Would suggest being mindful of that when sizing the device.
