  ### 1. ReadMe makes knowledge management simple

**What do you like best about ReadMe?**

ReadMe makes centralizing and presenting knowledge easy. Out of the box, it has features to host all of your user and developer documentation in a single place. Users will find the knowledge easy to navigate with transparent navigation, and developers will appreciate the OpenAPI Specification of API presentation. We just need to focus on the content now.

ReadMe has also saved us a lot of time with natively supported AI features like the conversational AI search, MCP and the bi-directional Github sync. With massive leaps in LLMs and coding becoming more accessible, this is a critical and future-proof strategy ReadMe is taking. It also means we don't need to piece together tools and build this functionality ourselves - we just get it. Similarly, we also tried a more flexible CMS solution for documentation before - it was a nightmare because of developer dependency. While ReadMe's options may not be infinitely customizable (e.g. predefined docs categories that cannot be altered), what we have suffices, and we are not dependent on anyone else for small changes.

Last but not least, the ReadMe team has been a pleasure to work with. We got a lot of love from Kirby and Dan and their great Support team. We do have a lot of questions and get help very quickly if we need it.

**What do you dislike about ReadMe?**

ReadMe could have slightly more customization options mainly for organizing knowledge. Within a single project, I can only organize knowledge into Guides, API Reference, Changelog, Recipes and Discussions. For us, it would be useful to have multiple "Guides" types within a specific project - this way we could organize and present the docs a bit more cleanly since we have a lot of content.

For the AI conversational search, a limitation is that external knowledge can  virtually not be indexed. We have a separate, Support-managed Help Center that we cannot index - we can only copy paste content into a static textbox with a limited character count. At this point, the AI search is useful, but only limited to the site's knowledge.

Similarly, I would appreciate a bit more visual customization options. Now, a lot customization needs to happen in the code using CSS, JS and HTML. We got incredibly far with Claude Code and with Readme's recommendations on using the right selectors in their docs, but unless you are okay tinkering with AI, you will need a developer to help you customize this yourself.

**What problems is ReadMe solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Easy centralization and presentation of product knowledge. We can focus all our time on the actual content and organization without worrying about the technicalities of the CMS, because they just work. AI helps make our knowledge even more accessible.

I find it really easy to navigate, even as someone who hadn’t used Markdown syntax before. I was able to figure it out quickly with the help of the drop-down menu, and now I don’t even really need it. Being able to manually add metadata to the background as well has been great.

I wish there were a way to add videos, or at least include a link on an image.

Having our changelog on the README has been great for AI visibility. When people search for information, they can find the correct feature set based on our changelog.

**What do you like best about ReadMe?**

We’re building our own investment app, and one of the clearing firms we work with already used ReadMe for their docs, so we checked it out from that referral. It’s been an excellent fit. It’s quick to publish clean, modern docs, the OpenAPI sync and interactive API reference work really well, and it’s easy for both technical and nontechnical folks to contribute. The analytics are also genuinely helpful for seeing what people are reading and where we can make things even clearer.

**What do you dislike about ReadMe?**

Nothing is perfect, some of the deeper customization and admin settings took us a minute to learn and could be a bit more intuitive, but the defaults are strong and support has been responsive, so it never slowed us down. Once you’re set up, day to day publishing and updates are effortless..

**What problems is ReadMe solving and how is that benefiting you?**

It gives us one place for API docs, guides, and updates so partners & vendors can onboard faster and we spend less time answering the same questions. Overall it’s made our docs more consistent, more current, and more professional.

**What do you like best about ReadMe?**

I like that it's fairly easy to get set up, and it's visually very clean. The branding is straightforward and sections like guides versus API reference are easy to understand. These aspects make ReadMe quite appealing to me.

**What do you dislike about ReadMe?**

I would like to have a better way to manage API documentation for different products. Right now, I have to work around things by creating a different version and basically making two products have two versions, but that's not semantically correct. I'd prefer to have a cleaner way to allow switchability between multiple products. Also, there's an annoying thing where the finance team can't have a role just to manage things like payment methods for our monthly payments, so they keep contacting me. That's the only gripe I have.

I use ReadMe for managing all our API documentation in a brandable and straightforward portal.

- For a docs product it has a outrageously buggy editor. Yes I understand buidling WYSIWYG editor is hard but come on, all the menu UI elements keep erractically jumping around. Cannot indent or dendent things correctly
- Terrible Keyword based search in 2024. 9/10 times search results are incorrectly ranked.
- Does not support hosting arbitrary static HTML pages - E.g. generated from Python Sphinx or Mkdocs

**What do you like best about ReadMe?**

If you're searching for an exceptional API documentation platform, look no further than Readme. This tool has transformed the way we handle API documentation, offering a seamless experience for end-users and developers alike.

 Readme's clean interface and intuitive navigation made it perfect for our customers who are seeking smooth integration with APIs, letting them try it on the go and see opportunities.
Support for custom pages and sections saved us and our customers time. We covered FAQ, and our webhooks, as well as wrote guides for some most popular use cases. 
Search is great and helps navigate our extensive API and saves time trying to find the endpoint you need.

**What do you dislike about ReadMe?**

It's hard to pinpoint anything in particular. I'd say the main pain point would be the markdown editor. It's not a huge problem, but it's weird to see it in such a modern solution.
Another downside is that there's no built-in support for documenting webhooks. As for now, we have to use regular articles and it's definitely harder to maintain.

From the moment we started using it, we were impressed by its user-friendly interface and seamless integration with various tools. 
 One of the standout features of readme is its powerful customization options. We were able to tailor our documentation to match our brand's identity, giving it a professional and polished look that resonates with our users. It is a bit confusing how the plans works, at the beginning it is not very clear if it is per user, plan or project.

**What do you like best about ReadMe?**

ReadMe allowed us within days to move our existing file-based documentation to an online, searchable and beautiful portal. The process to create new articles/guides is especially simple. The use of markdown and their building blocks meant that we could very easily copy existing collateral and just add headers/pictures as we saw fit, and it just worked out of the box. No messing around with detailed formatting or layouting and the entire site is coherent.

**What do you dislike about ReadMe?**

The available landing pages didn't really suit our needs as we had a large guide with quite a few categories, so we had to create a custom HTML one -- which become a quite technical task. The final product is good, but it's something that only a subset of our editors/users can understand.

**What problems is ReadMe solving and how is that benefiting you?**

ReadMe solved our need to produce and distribute guides and sales material to both existing users and prospects. We went from a very oldschool PDF-based set of documentation to an online hub where users can much more easily digest the capabiilities of our software, experiment with our APIs and learn tips & tricks. It's also allowed us to maintain our documentation in real-time and to be much more agile when it comes to amending and updating it, which has significantly raised the quality of the content we have there.

There isn't much to dislike, I suppose the complexity of API credential management through single sign on is the most difficult component of ReadMe.com

**What do you like best about ReadMe?**

The support is wonderful and I really enjoy how easy it is to add team members. The mascot is really enjoyable and in general it gets the job done. Easy to implement.

**What do you dislike about ReadMe?**

Lack of collaboration tools, no content resuse tools, hard to work with images and no options to put inline etc. They're constantly improving their API doc tools but really little focus on general user doc needs despite many recommendations over the years. Some features that are entreprise only -- seems really unfair they don't offer the ad hoc. Global search and pdf download options should not be exclusive to enterprise because the cost is so different.

I cant really think of anything that I dislike about Readme.com - especially compared to other platforms that we used before hand.

We needed a solution to manage our API documentation that included versioning of that API along with guides and re-usable elements so we didn't have to keep copy/pasting between documents.

**What do you like best about ReadMe?**

ReadMe takes the somewhat daunting task of communicating API functionality and creates a straightforward way to manage that information and present it to end users so that they can act more quickly.  

As a product manager, I work with my customers by looking at the API Reference together and help them identify specific requests for new data points, parameters, etc. to decide how to improve it going forward. 

The Changelog both showcases value-added, and is a trustworthy resource for any long-time customers who need to react to changes made.

**What do you dislike about ReadMe?**

I don't think we are utilizing all of the features that ReadMe offers, so there is probably some customer education or guidance that could go a long way to help us sort out how to improve the experience for our users. 

I'd like to create more opportunities for education amongst the categories and API endpoints, as well as more navigation opportunities, as our API reference list has grown quite large.

Provides a way for technical end users to digest information and see what is available via our API.

Great user experience. The platform is intuitive and easy to use, there are small details like the owl that just make using the product more enjoyable. The API functionality is great and it's easy to submit a product request. I also appreciate the transparency and accessibility of the product roadmap right from the help page.

**What do you dislike about ReadMe?**

Since it is in markdown, there is a bit of limited functionality. For example, if you numbered lists are sometimes difficult to create if you have an image or other break in between items. Also, would be nice to be able to incorporate files that are not links.

Start using day 1, very easy to implement.Also easy to customize to fit your needs and your goals.

Built for small and medium sized companies. If you need additional segments, multiple sets of API documentaton it can get VERY EXPENSIVE. 

Also, product support is non existent for lower tiers. Not a bad thing, but something to think about when selecting your package.

We had API documentation that was dissagregated and provided only informaiton about end points, little to know business value. Read.me helped us build an community around our API documetnaton for our technical users.

Love the sandbox environments we give users to test out our APIs right from our docs. They don't need to leave or go elsewhere, everything can happen right there in the documentation.

**What do you dislike about ReadMe?**

I wish they offered an area to test out websockets. Right now the area to test out APIs is top notch. But we started offering websockets and that requires users to leave the docs to test them

**What problems is ReadMe solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Allowing users to see and engage is using our APIs to the fullest extent. ReadMe gives us a sandbox rigth within the docs to test out our endpoints.

I think ReadMe has a lot of great features that are just gated for higher subscriptions -- too pricey.

**What do you like best about ReadMe?**

The ease of use is awesome; it is straightforward and very powerful while being simple to use. I especially like that you can have a molecular design for your Docs; that is, you can make many divisions and levels of information. I also think that something great about Readme is the ease of adding in things different than text (images, tables and Code examples). For example, it's great that you can have multiple versions of the code examples and also the expected result/response. 

In general, I think that ReadMe has most of what you could need for creating any Website/Service documentation.

**What do you dislike about ReadMe?**

This really isn't something bad, but I'd love if you could have a side-by-side preview of how the Doc would look, and not have to actually open a new tab to view it. 

For the rest of it, for what my colleagues and I use ReadMe for, I genuinely can't find any other things that I don´t like.

**What problems is ReadMe solving and how is that benefiting you?**

ReadMe solves our need for a dedicated server instance for our Docs, and further on, it's maintenance. This means that our Development Team can actually concentrate on our Services and not on how the Documentation is shown to our users.

**What do you like best about ReadMe?**

Straight out of the box, Readme looks stunning. If you care about providing a satisfying user experience, using a Readme developer hub is the way to go. In my experience using other developer hubs powered by Readme, the server API Reference feature makes it incredibly easy to understand, get samples for and try out various API methods. At our company, we synchronise our client API reference generated in markdown to our Guides section using the Readme API. A handy feature of Readme for providing code samples is Recipes - where you can create a step-by-step walkthrough guide of sample code. I've found these enjoyable to write, and they form an integral part of our feature guides for developers.

**What do you dislike about ReadMe?**

As great as Readme is, the content editing experience feels quite limited to what markdown can provide. I want more powerful layout features in guides, such as columns. While it's possible to add custom content using HTML/CSS, it would be nicer for Readme to have a more powerful WYSIWYG editor.
When our dashboard got the new editor, I found it stripped many of the features of the previous editor and felt more like an inconvenience. The support team were able to switch us back to the legacy editor.
Images are slow to load on Readme; I would expect some form of optimisation on the platform side. There is no option to host files such as sample projects and demos, which has been a pain point for our team since it's preferable to host everything in one place (on the developer hub).
While the overall website looks fantastic, sometimes minor bugs impede the experience, and it isn't communicated when a release with bug fixes is out. While the suggested edits feature is good, the editing experience is comparably worse than the one provided to editors.
Overall, it's a good platform, but it can feel inconsistent in places - which may be a side-effect of the platform being updated frequently.

Readme helps us solve creating and organising developer documentation, including guides and recipes, and allows us to sync changes to our API Reference automatically. Readme helps us provide a delightful developer experience and supports us in creating learning resources for our API in various ways.

Readme is built for technology platforms that want to enable customers to self-serve. Readme is also built on this self-serve model - its customer engagement and roadmap is still evolving. But the good news is that its team is very responsive to feedback and actively seeks input from its customer base. This is a platform on the rise.

SaaS products are complex, and developers are increasingly the buyer of these services. Traditional, wordy marketing websites do not appeal to developers - they prefer to review JSON, XML, or GraphQL directly. Readme makes it very easy to document your service and put your best foot forward with the important audience.

Readme is very feature rich.  It makes it simple for the technology team to make their changes known to integrating partners as well as business and marketing to give their touch to the documents.  It makes it easy to display changes, highlight "good to knows" and even proivde recipes for integrating.

**What do you dislike about ReadMe?**

One thing I would like to change is make it easier for the technology and business to work together on pages.  When the page is taking the docs straight from the code, it makes it hard for business to add their touch as it will get overwritten every time. If the pages could be hybrid or have some locking functionality that would be fantastic.

**What problems is ReadMe solving and how is that benefiting you?**

We work with many different levels of technology teams to integrate with our software.  ReadMe makes it easy for all levles to pick up our documents for our many differnt products and begin integrating with us right away.  We often get compliments on our docs, which is a big shoutout for ReadMe.

The recipes and OpenAPI documentation features are fantastic, the fact that we can link our OpenAPI generation up from Github Actions CI through the ReadMe API to automatically update our documentation is an amazing feature.

The code block feature when writing documentation isn't great in my opinion; previously, we had used Gitbooks before we transitioned to ReadMe and I always loved the ability to just create a code block with ``` tags - the code block in ReadMe always feels a little too comprehensive for a few lines of bash script.

**What problems is ReadMe solving and how is that benefiting you?**

ReadMe allows Budibase to write great documentation for our tool, as well as helping us understand areas of our documentation which needs improvements. The thumbs up/down feature has helped us work out areas of the product which are confusing, or need better explanation which is great.

The overall structure of the site builder is easy to use.  The limited formatting actually helps prevent you from wasting time messing with frivolous settings and encourages concise effective content.

Enterprise features are wildly expensive and you have to buy enterprise to use any one of those features.  Things like the ability to export your site as a PDF seem like they don't need to be behind that wall.

**What do you like best about ReadMe?**

The ability for our users to test our APIs right in the developer hub is extremely useful. In addition to that, being able to provide developers with recipes that guide them on how to develop more challenging concepts & features is very valuable. Readme takes a lot of the work out of surfacing content in a way that is useful to developers and lets us focus on the actual content.

**What do you dislike about ReadMe?**

Some features are not 100% functional yet. Some of our APIs leverage file-uploads and readme's file-upload feature does not work (yet). That being said, the code snippets generated are accurate and helpful even though the 'Try It!' button does not fire off a successful API call.

8/3/2022 update - readme has improved the file upload functionality and now our developers are able to test even more effectively than before. Thanks readme team!

Using readme has allowed us to adjust our collaboration workflow so more people can collaborate on our docs with less friction. On top of that, we have had challenges in the past with surfacing our technical docs in a way that is digestible for developers and Readme has alleviated a lot of that with the way content is organized out of the box.

Simple and effective markdown editor and guide creation. Automatically builds REST API reference from open API spec, which keeps the reference data update to date at all times. Version control is nice to have as well as new integration are launched.

There could be stronger branding elements and more widget options within the guides, mainly to consolidate more general documentation/help guides in a single place. Also an email capture option would be awesome.

ReadMe offers best practices right in the box. You don't need much background in good API development as simply following all the steps helps. It supports markdown and the UX looks and feels good. There is a lot of automated features like suggestions, changelogs, home pages, code snippet that automates the process.

**What do you dislike about ReadMe?**

Full OpenAPI 3.0 support is still quite lacking. In our case have to make a script that crawls all our objects so that ReadMe is unable to process it naturally. It does not have a native notion of what a shared Shema is. This is where Redoc excels at.

Saving us a lot of time with building a developer portal. We don't see fancy customization and mainly need to build stuff using very little time.

From an administration perspective, the CI integration made it very easy for our entire technical team of engineers to be able to contribute to documentation writing. 

On the end user side, the navigation, permalinks, and real-time API tests are very cool. The Recipes are a great feature that we will be increasingly taking advantage of.

We are early users so we do not see much to dislike at the moment. It is very tailored to technical documentation, it would be nice to be able to consolidate all of our product resources in one place. That doesn't seem realistic with Readme.

This gives the flexibility enough to cater to our business needs.

The only thing we found problematic is that if the API requires a file as input, it doesn't work if the customer directly try it via the Developer Hub.

Documenting APIs, both for OpenAPI specs and custom ones,  was easy to do. The CMS system is simple and easy to use and never had an issue with losing work. Fast and responsive.

I wish there was a dark mode (although apparently one is coming) and more default theme options, although they do support custom CSS.

Readme's software is pretty good. The dashboard and developer hub looks great right out of the box, something I couldn't easily find elsewhere. The integration with swagger works well.

**What do you dislike about ReadMe?**

I feel like these guys are winging it. Support has been horrible from day one. They'll see your request and simply not respond; will tell you reported bugs are being worked on but will never get to fix them. 

Their newest product, Metrics, was launched a few months ago. As soon as they launched it I reported a breaking bug with the middleware they use, Cloudflare. That bug still hasn't been fixed. They are taking money from customers knowing that the product they're selling doesn't work.
