It has too many features and options I don't use. Used to be I'd get the new Quark upgrade, do the new tutorial, and I'd be fluid within three days. Now I just read about the new features, and if it's something I'd use, I simply find and learn the tutorial that teaches it. **What problems is QuarkXPress solving and how is that benefiting you?** Whenever I get a text file with junk in the text, or a file with extensive find/replace, or a word processing file I have to fix, I copy/paste it into a Quark doc and fix it there. Sometimes just pasting it into Quark fixes the text, and I can just copy it right back out and paste it back into an email or text doc. Quark will fix things when nothing else will. ### 2. It was a fairly simple programme that I could use to display my graphics and transform my architectural drawings into digital form. In February 2020 I had to upgrade to Microsoft 2020 which was awful. A considerable portion of my hardware, printers, scanners etc were no longer supported by Microsoft, so I not only had the annoyance of renewing a great deal of my hardware but I had to learn new software which was again taking a great deal of time and slowing my business down to a standstill. QuarkXPress 4 was one of the unsupported programmes. I was grateful that I recognised the tool bars and the form of QuarkXPress 2020. **What do you dislike about QuarkXPress?** I could not find one of the tool bars that I was used to. On the trial programme this was clearly there on QuarkXPress 9 The instruction manual is unfriendly and unwieldy, there are about 20 chapter headings and the one I was trying to use had over 210 pages. This is totally unacceptable. This is because the information is centred in a column which extends the chapter by about 20x I fund when entering data to a file if I make a mistake, then the whole of the data in that box is deleted, and sometimes the whole file. This is not only time wasting and annoying but can be a source of lost intelligence. **Recommendations to others considering QuarkXPress:** QuarkXPress is a well tried and well used piece of software in the publishing industry. It has been developed over a cconsiderable number of years and if the user is well used to the programme can produce good results. I just hope taht QuarkXPress is knowledgeable of its client base as a lot of us find that the modifications to its programme have made it far harder to use. **What problems is QuarkXPress solving and how is that benefiting you?** I use QuarkXPress mainly for producing architectural drawings into a print form where I can legibly title and dimension the information. I have never learnt AutoCad as I went into architecture as I love drawing and I find the display of AutoCad drawings monotonous and characterless. QuarkXPress has allowed me to produce my images and drawings in a manner which shows my individuality. ### 3. One can place elements to 1,000th of a millimeter, there are no formatting hang-ups (as one gets with Word), things stay where they are put (unlike Word!) and it's very versatile, allowing one to produce any kind of print material from a business card right through to exhibition stand graphics or from a simple sales letter to a complex multi-fold leaflet, magazine or newspaper. It's also licence based, not subscription based, so one is not forced to pay regular amounts just to be able to use the software. **What do you dislike about QuarkXPress?** Perhaps it's not so easy to use as it used to be: there is, for instance, a lot of duplication between 'Home' and 'Text box' – I seem to recall most of it used to be under 'Home' and that was fine. But once used to where things have gone to, it isn't so bad. **What problems is QuarkXPress solving and how is that benefiting you?** If Quark didn't exist and I had to rely on Word for my DTP – and a lot of people do – I'd probably have shot myself by now! So, the problems Quark solves are simply being able to produce great 'page designs' relatively easily – like any professionally produced work, there's considerable skill involved in realising an idea, which Quark allows one to do... and do in the knowledge that (done properly) there will be no problems further down the production line when 'artwork' is turned into print. ### 4. For those who want a one-and-done deal, Quark has always been a great alternative, and nowadays it's become a standard part of my design toolset. Using color fonts and managing UI comps are a breeze! **What do you dislike about QuarkXPress?** There are times where Quark may lag a little when using the toolbar to change leading, colors, etc. In a few cases the program would also crash in both my Windows versions of 2018 and 2019. Fortunately the recent update fixed this but be sure to save often just in case! **What problems is QuarkXPress solving and how is that benefiting you?** Recently I had switched to Serif's line of Affinity products to replace my Photoshop and Illustrator needs to save costs, however I noticed their comping for custom graphics for social media aren't as streamlined as I was used to. While I wouldn't use Quark to mock up vectors, their spreads for social media posts like for Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram are so easy to use that I often wonder why I never connected the dots beforehand. ### 5. Bought a new Mac, repurchased Quark for it and now it's completely unusable. Old files won't open after all kinds of customer support efforts. Customer support is virtually nonexistent, in India, and is the worst type of scripted, unhelpful tech support you can imagine. When told my brand new software was not working after their "best" efforts to fix it, I got basically a corporate shoulder shrug and an oh, well. After weeks and weeks of trying to get my new software to work, I gave up and transferred everything to Indesign. I will NEVER ever buy Quark products again. **What do you dislike about QuarkXPress?** Customer support. Bad glitchy software. I bought the new version because my old version was doing this.. and the new version does it as well.. not "every" time.. but just about every time.. and so I'm constantly saving and saving.. and just when I don't -- everything crashes.. and I lose everything. And also -- when it does work.. it changes the color of the type and font of the copy that was copied and pasted.. it's so frustrating. I've spoken to the support and it's still bad. **Recommendations to others considering QuarkXPress:** if your copy and paste feature is broken.. don't bother.. it's a pain and takes too much time to be worth it. **What problems is QuarkXPress solving and how is that benefiting you?** see above. copy and paste crashes my account constantly -- doesn't work most of the time.. and when it does - it changes color and sizes of font. ### 14. I love having everything in one place. Change the size of the pages when necessary, the gradations, the HTML options are excellent. Quark is an excellent way to put together the pages of newspapers. It is easy to design sharp and award-winning pages. There are so many useful functions that help the creator of the pages, and it is a quick program once you learn all the nuances. I like the pretty simple interface and the ease of use after getting acquainted with some tutorials and practical design projects. I love that QuarkXPulse does what I need and does it well. **What do you dislike about QuarkXPress?** I think the latest Adobe integrations can be annoying and, for my purposes, not so useful. Character of complete levels of transparency and does not have photo stratification capabilities, such as opacities and layer modes. It also includes a menu of information sources, so you can not see the style of the font that is used up to what has been selected at this time. Quark is also a bit unstable at times. I have tried other softwares, but for me they just do not have the same feeling or great function that Quark has, and after a few hours of experimentation, I thought we should continue using and going back to what I know.
