The layout is simple, no images or fluff. **What do you dislike about Moodle?** The gradebook is horrible and times out easily, and it does not communicate with third party sites like Turnitin after it times out. After 11 years of using it, I had to submit 6 grade changes out of 132 students because Turnitin timed out at a different time than Moodle. It did not communicate and record grades and did not tell me that this process did not happen. This also happened when I inputted actual items into my gradebook, so what should have been out of 950 in my Excel computed out of 835 for students. Each time the Zoom code was deleted, the participation points would disappear. It was a disaster. The grades for assignments would fluctuate from 10 to 100 points randomly. Chaotic and unreliable at best. **Recommendations to others considering Moodle:** Don't do it. Use Canvas. **What problems is Moodle solving and how is that benefiting you?** It proved to me that my system of not relying on any LMS for grading is smart. I use paper and Excel. Firstly, it is free (unless your institution doesn't have the technical expertise to deploy it on your servers) and nothing beats cutting down business expenditure like free and robust software. Secondly, there is a huge worldwide community backing the Moodle project. This means if you ever get stuck, there's someone out there with an answer. The community also extends to developer support for the platform and hence there are many plugins to enhance the functionality of Moodle. Next, Moodle has great assessment tools. I had grown acquainted with a more proprietary solution before switching to Moodle and the quiz features sealed the deal. From multiple question types to convenient formatting options, it really is a supercar of an LMS. Moodle is also themeable, and there are tons of free and premium themes to make it unique to your brand. I'm sure if an organization has a team of designers they would find it simple enough to theme Moodle to their liking. Lastly, it is updated regularly. Just a few days ago, it was updated to version 3.8. The fact that Moodle has such a huge community (and user-base) means that it has to do its best to be all things to everyone. That is probably the reason why it is so frustrating for many newbies (that includes me when I was learning the ropes) that are trying it out for the first time. I acknowledge the work that has gone into redesigning the UI with the new Boost theme, but UX is not the most user-friendly compared with some commercial options out there. The update process has a tendency of breaking plugins (not unique to Moodle) but it can mean many sleepless nights when you fail to pinpoint your exact problem. **Recommendations to others considering Moodle:** Be patient, Moodle can be tamed but it takes time. If you plan to switch to Moodle from another vendor, I would recommend at least 6 months of testing and acclimatization with Moodle. It will probably do everything you expect from any top-tier LMS but it takes time to fully grasp it. When running upgrades, always have a backup handy, it won't hurt to have more. For the last three years I started to teach online through this platform and every time it improves my experience of use, everything is designed to make it easier for the teacher to create a virtual space for teaching and on the other hand it facilitates the student to be able to obtain maximum knowledge and performance, it seems wonderful to be able to interact with my students in such a fluid way through: chats, blogs, forums and wikis, this last one has been very interesting as a teaching practice since it has allowed us so much I, as well as my students, elaborate a series of documents in a collaborative way that we have later disseminated, allowing the dissemination of knowledge. You can ask questions and we as teachers can respond or they can help each other. - Allows online exams. **What do you dislike about Moodle?** What I don't like is the interface, somewhat outdated. Managing a Moodle site is not easy, it requires a long implementation period, with a prior study phase, because the interface is intuitive, but not as much as I would like. If you are not an administrator, and you simply have to organize your course material, it is much easier to manage, but it also takes time to get used to the program's controls. - If you lose connection one day in the classroom, you're "stuck" and you'll have to find some resource to avoid losing the class that day. **Recommendations to others considering Moodle:** If you think that the organization of your class can be improved and that you are not taking advantage of the possibilities of the internet to do so and to have better tracking of your students, go ahead and install Moodle. Use it! **What problems is Moodle solving and how is that benefiting you?** It has made it easier for us to personally track each student, communicate with them and among themselves. It helps us organize our courses securely with enrollment keys. It was difficult for us to learn how to manage the platform, but once we got past the learning stage, we couldn't be happier. What is not to like about that. But when it comes to functionality, Moodle is great. I can customize my courses easily, using Moodle for assignment submission which allows for quick grading turn around. The Moodle grade book is customized and very powerful. And the messaging and forum setups are great to facilitate the sharing of classroom information. **What do you dislike about Moodle?** The learning curve is a bit steep initially. The UI isn't quite as intuitive as I would like, but overall the benefits have outweighed the cons in this area. Setting up the various grade book styles can be very time consuming until you have mastered the process. I think the word I would use to describe Moodle is "clunky." **Recommendations to others considering Moodle:** Make sure to put in the time upfront to make sure you get the most out of Moodle. It is a powerful tool, but does require some work on the users end. **What problems is Moodle solving and how is that benefiting you?** Moodle is useful for streamlining course grading. I can have students upload their assignments, then input their grades directly into the grade book. The Moodle quizzes are also easy to use and import grades directly into the grade book. I also like the ability to upload daily notes, videos, papers, links, etc. It makes my classroom more vibrant and informed when we all have access to a variety of course materials. ### 49.
