You can either stand up a server yourself or pay for hosting at very reasonable costs. We're equipped for 500 users at under $100 a month in hosting, with backups, etc. For us, we use an LMS for our customers to take sporadic training so typical LMS pricing models didn't make much sense. This was the only way to afford a proper LMS and use it externally. **What do you dislike about Moodle?** There are SO MANY options because it's open source. It does so many things that will be for some obscure use case or problem. It definitely suffers from a lack of product oversight and guidance to be simple. The approach really seems to be to allow for every use and feature imaginable and that makes features hard to find, uncover, and use, even if they are a more standard LMS feature. **Recommendations to others considering Moodle:** I'd use a third party host that specializes in Moodle if possible. This will let you likely get a free trial but also you don't need to involve your own dev or engineering teams whatsover and all the backups, etc. can be someone else's job. I'd also make sure you have buy in from your team and someone to be the point person in styling and owning moodle to become the SME as it is fairly complicated. **What problems is Moodle solving and how is that benefiting you?** We needed to host e-learning (SCORM files produced in Articulate), track progress, assign courses, etc. but for our customers, without paying a per-user license fee as that becomes prohibitively expensive when paying for all end users of a largely--adopted platform like ours. Moodle allows us to do that without breaking the budget, and also has enough help/support out there that we can do this all self-directed. ### 2. At our organization we use Moodle for various online courses, we do not have a limit for how many courses we can design and publish on Moodle. There are also no limits on the number of course instructors, students that can be added to the system. The platform supports languages e.g. Arabic, Russian, Persian which is useful as we run programs globally. **What do you dislike about Moodle?** Moodle interface is outdated, there are better learning platforms that offer a friendly user experience e.g. Google classrooms. Adding participants into a course is cumbersome. One cannot easily replicate the course. Moodle mobile application sometimes lags, we often advise students to use the desktop version for better engagement. **Recommendations to others considering Moodle:** I would say consider other options in the market because Moodle can be expensive. While there are tools (like bitnami) that make it easier to get a Moodle site up and running, some of the customization and more interesting plugins require a little back-end knowledge or access to get working right. However, if you're just looking for relatively standard features (lessons, files, progress bars, games, etc.) - that's all easy to install onto your site and easy to configure. I have a few issues with specific plug-ins where they are not as flexible or don't follow the "standard" Moodle way of doing things, but that's not necessarily Moodle's fault. However, I feel like it is Moodle's responsibility to provide (and enforce) a common set of tools. For example, Moodle has the ability to support drag-n-drop reordering of widgets/items on the site and yet not all elements of Moodle take advantage of this. Like the gradebook, for example, I can't easily reorder items or move them into other sections (additional dialogs pop up, and then you have to scroll through dozens of items to find the right place) - when simply drag-n-dropping them should move them to a new order or to a new category without any additional issues. There are some limitations to this plug-in, but it has overall been a fantastic tool that has taken a LOT of grading and evaluation off of my plate.
