Outside of work though, I’ve always gone analog. This past holiday season, hosting 4 events w/folks who weren’t co-located required I treat family and friends like a distributed team. Post-its just wouldn't cut it. How to do that while retaining my humanity, though? Kanban Zone understood the assignment. I didn’t want to go all project manager on my cousins. I didn’t want to take the fun out of the season. I didn't want to mechanize an otherwise humane experience. And I certainly didn't have the time to teach anyone a new tool. But I *did* need everyone to know what was planned, what each dish required ahead of time, what its prep and phasing looked like, who was responsible for what, what they could do when I was too busy to give them instruction and so on. Kanban Zone gave us a tool that was intuitive, flexible, eminently tailorable, lending clarity, flow, and even calm to an otherwise insane series of Italian dinner traditions. I do not have to adapt the reading of information using other available graphs or use plug-ins to have my kanban metrics that will improve my team's work. Creating cards by forwarding an email to the board, helps tremendously to organize and feed the backlog. **What do you dislike about Kanban Zone?** The design was something that I had to adapt my eyes to. I was used to seeing and working with colored fonts and panels coming from all over the place and suddenly I saw a clean canvas to work with. The first time we used it, I could see that it was quite simple and easy to handle, creating an entry on the board was super simple, plus there I could place the entire description of the activity that had to be developed at that time Another point that I found particularly useful was the fact that the dashboard could be exported to Excel, which allowed us to have a backup in case the web platform did not want to work for us at any given time. I had seen productive people use Kanban before and wanted to learn. I reached out to Dimitri and Kanban Zone and we set up weekly personal coaching. During the first session, Dimitri helped down my projects into smaller manageable components (cards), and made a board tracking the progress of the cards (is this section of the essay being written, edited, reviewed, or sent to outside reviewers?). Over the course of a few weeks, I literally saw my productivity improve as I moved cards from backlog to done. This not only helped me shape my ideas, but also was very satisfying at an emotional level as I dragged each card to the next stage. During our weekly check-ins, Dimitri helped me deal with blocked issues, and brought up different Kanban Zone features (such as sizing, blocking, assigning cards to team members, and explicit agreements) that would help with the issues I had encountered that week. I enjoyed Kanban Zone so much that I put it to use in moving out of my apartment. The board itself has good usability, you can expand or hide every column or lane. The team behind the product is also amazing and very quickly to answer and listen do us, the customes. **What do you dislike about Kanban Zone?** General visual. Somehow too many things are tight to each other and still there is lots of white spaces unused. The visual is very flat. I was a bit confused with metric and reports, too. Most other things I had issues their team changed, very good. **What problems is Kanban Zone solving and how is that benefiting you?** Having the teams define and discover the best innovation proccess to them and have a tool flexible enough to have their back. While the boarding tool was very flexible, their admin count restriction caused some unnecessary trouble to me, what they changed later. It has all the functionality to pull off complex projects with many workstreams. From a UX perspective, I like that you can click and start editing comments and fields in the cards. **What do you dislike about Kanban Zone?** The visual space is a little cluttered, but once you get used to it it's easy enough to navigate. There are a few small things UX-wise that could be improved. The search function in the cards is a little wonky (it highlights the words you searched for in the cards that the search returns, but they're not always at the top of the results). Also, the notifications seem not to refresh after you've seen them ( you have to click each one, but I already get emails for them so I don't really need to click them all). **Recommendations to others considering Kanban Zone:** Great for organizing teams from different areas on your projects. **What problems is Kanban Zone solving and how is that benefiting you?** We have a team working in several different countries so this allows us to avoid lots of "chatter" via email or messaging platforms and stay on task. It is simple, intuitive, it just works ! The costumer support is superb, I have sent questions, or requests to the support team and I get a personalized email FROM A HUMAN within minutes. I have reported some bugs and they get resolved within the hour !... I have also asked for special functionalities to be incorporated and as they make sense and are generic, they got implemented within a couple days ! **What do you dislike about Kanban Zone?** I would love a more granular security system where you could assign read or write access to specific cards I would love to see more statistics being generated by the tool other than the generic ones **Recommendations to others considering Kanban Zone:** Kanbanzone takes away all the hassle and complexity of building and configuring your electronic board and allows you to immediately focus on what is important, work your project out Start with a minimal basic set so you can start working immediately and add complexity to your board as you go Use the Custom Fields, its a great way to get all you need from your board. You can for example, create one field to enter the product and track different products or projects within the same board. Eventually, learn how to use the Public API, that will allow you to integrate your board with other applications for analysis or work reports. I use this API to publish my team's productivity statistics using Power BI. Encourage the use of Kanban Cards not only to track the project's tasks but also to plan and organize the daily activities within your team. I ask my team to plan ahead their week of work and create and update the board which we will review once a week to identify possible blockers and in general, have visibility of our job. Regarding the per-person lanes, we will not add that feature because it promotes silos within a team and viewing cards per person can easily be achieved with our filters.
