# Which 401(k) platforms integrate cleanly with existing systems without custom development?

"Without custom development" rules out much of what gets marketed as an integration in 401(k) software, since many "integrations" still mean manually exporting and uploading a file every pay cycle.

Gusto 401(k): Built directly into Gusto payroll rather than integrated after the fact, so for companies already on Gusto, there's no separate connection to configure at all; the tradeoff shows up for companies not on Gusto payroll, where reviewers describe being moved to a different underlying provider entirely.

Betterment at Work: Reviewers repeatedly praise clean, no-custom-dev integrations with Rippling and Paychex specifically; the sharp exception is QuickBooks Payroll, where one reviewer reports being told an integration was "coming in 2026" and, nearly two years later, is still manually uploading payroll files via templates they call cumbersome and error-prone.

Human Interest: Markets over 500 "no-touch" payroll integrations, and mid-market reviewers largely confirm the core sync works without custom work, though a couple note the two-login experience after certain payroll platform integrations creates friction that a true single-sign-on connection wouldn't.

If QuickBooks Payroll is your system of record, the Betterment review above suggests waiting on that specific claim rather than budgeting for it. For anyone running a payroll platform other than Gusto, Rippling, or Paychex, has your integration actually stayed custom-development-free, or did it need a workaround these reviews don't mention?

The QuickBooks example is a more useful data point than it looks, less about Betterment specifically and more about a mechanism: any 401(k) provider promising a future integration with a payroll platform is really promising a deliverable that depends on someone else's API and priorities, not its own roadmap. That's how "coming in 2026" quietly becomes 2028. Worth asking any vendor whether a promised integration is already live with your specific payroll partner, not just planned.
