  ### 8. WebSphere Hybrid Edition helps your modernization journey to WebSphere Liberty and the cloud

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Sean B. | Senior Systems Specialist, Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** February 05, 2023

**What do you like best about IBM WebSphere?**

WebSphere Hybrid Edition is helping us modernize our WebSphere runtime from 'traditional' WebSphere Application Server (tWAS) to a much simpler, lightweight, fast and easy-to-use runtime in WebSphere Liberty. While tWAS is a great product and has served us well over many years, WebSphere Liberty is better.

WebSphere Liberty is suitable for not only traditional VM environments - where most of our workload is today - but WebSphere Liberty has been purpose-built for the cloud, with super fast startup times and low memory requirements.

And once your transition from tWAS to WebSphere Liberty is complete, should you wish, the next step to containerize your apps is effortless.

Of course, not all apps in their present form are suitable candidates for the cloud. That’s where Mono2Micro comes to the rescue. Mono2Micro helps you refactor your apps to microservices. I will admit that while I have tried the product, and it is pretty impressive with what it did, coming from an admin rather than a development background, I did find it somewhat challenging. Placed in the right hands, though, I could see it considerably simplifying and reducing the risk and effort in this refactoring process. I’m not sure how you could refactor a monolithic app any other way.

Much, if not all, of the complexities of creating and managing tWAS environments are eliminated when using WebSphere Liberty. I cannot stress this enough; you should start using and moving (from tWAS) to WebSphere Liberty today. You won’t look back! If you’re an admin, your app teams will thank you for it. As an admin, creating a WebSphere Liberty server in one second sure beats the manageProfile and addNode commands. Even the ability to rename a WebSphere Liberty server with a Unix ‘mv’ command is a win for me. Or being able to clone an existing server with a Unix copy command saves too much time and effort. Many years back, I had difficulties convincing teams to use WebSphere Liberty rather than tWAS, but now they are asking me for it!

And to help you on your journey, WebSphere Hybrid Edition provides Transformation Advisor (TA), which scans your code to identify the suitability of using WebSphere Liberty, identifies what needs to change, provides an estimate on the effort required and helps generate your server.xml file. TA can also help identify apps using WAS-ND that could run in WAS-base, thereby saving considerably on licensing charges - this is helping us in such an exercise.

Then there’s the complex world of managing licenses. Using WebSphere Hybrid Edition has simplified our licensing model and is helping alleviate our concerns about exceeding our rights. Now we can have one pool, not a WAS-ND pool, a WAS-base pool, and a Liberty core pool. Just one license pool to manage them all.

WebSphere Hybrid Edition has allowed us to convert our expensive WAS-ND licenses to WebSphere Hybrid Edition licenses for a small cost without discarding our WAS-ND licenses entirely. Now we can transition appropriate apps from WAS-ND to WAS-base, Liberty-base or Liberty-core without wasting our WAS-ND licenses and purchasing new WAS-base or Liberty-core licenses. Strange as it sounds, we have several apps using WAS-ND without using any of the WAS-ND features.

And lastly - this is not a sales pitch, just my opinion - I do like IBM’s commitment and investment to making WebSphere Liberty the best product possible, with a particular focus on the cloud. This investment can be seen with what appears to be a fantastic feature in Liberty InstantOn.

**What do you dislike about IBM WebSphere?**

My least-liked feature isn't easy to answer as there is so much to like about WebSphere Hybrid Edition, particularly WebSphere Liberty. Of all the features of WebSphere Hybrid Edition, while I like Mono2Micro, it was somewhat overwhelming. It should be noted that this is not a reflection on the product - which is quite impressive - it’s more a reflection of the difficulties an admin like me has with the product. As mentioned earlier, I’m sure the feeling would be different in the hands of a developer.

Similarly, nothing to do with Mono2Micro, but I feel WebSphere Hybrid Edition truly shines when moving from tWAS to WebSphere Liberty - this is where the mix-and-match licensing helps - rather than Mono2Micro.

**What problems is IBM WebSphere solving and how is that benefiting you?**

WebSphere Hybrid Edition, both tWAS and WebSphere Liberty, allows us to run our critical business applications in a high performing, robust, and reliable application server. While we have intermittent problems, these generally relate to the apps or sizing issues - Java heap size, pool sizes, etc. I cannot think of a time when the WebSphere product was the issue. And with WebSphere Liberty, one of the more challenging issues around web container thread pool sizes is solved with the auto-scaling default executor thread pool.

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Government Administration | Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** November 22, 2022

**What do you like best about IBM WebSphere?**

Liberty provides a lightweight solution to support Java applications, and I love its fast rollout of an application/production and the fewer efforts for support and maintenance.
Application Server still provides a powerful and robust solution to meet enterprise needs. The security and transaction management features are still much appreciated for complicated business requirements. I love the convenience of configuring data sources, and creating different types of application servers and applications in the Application Server.

**What do you dislike about IBM WebSphere?**

The lack of a convenient way to test the data source connection in the Liberty.
For the Application Server, I dislike the complexity of the file structure and the confusion of configuration files at different levels (e.g. Node level and Server level)

**What problems is IBM WebSphere solving and how is that benefiting you?**

It helps run a bundle of our Java applications to meet business requirements.
We benefit from the fast rollout of the application extension in Liberty to satisfy the constantly changing of non-critical business.
We also benefit from the robust and yet complicated solutions to the core applications in the Application Server to meet critical business needs.

  ### 13. Secure and efficient application server for enterprise applications

IBM WebSphere Application Server is a highly flexible solution for running and testing enterprise applications with Java server runtime environments. The best aspect of the solution is the flexibility for deploying and managing applications regardless of location and machines, which is excellent for testing and analyzing deployed applications in multi-cloud environments.

**What do you dislike about IBM WebSphere?**

Cloud deployment doesn't take much time for IBM WebSphere Application Server and is easy to manage, but the container deployment of the server images at the premise is hard to understand and a bit tricky process.

**What problems is IBM WebSphere solving and how is that benefiting you?**

We use IBM WebSphere for building, deploying and running our enterprise applications with the Java runtime environment. It is very helpful to test the application during the development process, as it provides the best predictive scenario for the applications that will run after production.

  ### 15. My bad experiences with WebSphere

**Rating:** 1.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Hospitality | Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** November 03, 2022

**What do you like best about IBM WebSphere?**

The product itself is great when it works. If there are no issues, it will be a good tool for running and testing your Java EE environments. The idea is solid, and the product is helpful in the short term.

**What do you dislike about IBM WebSphere?**

As I mentioned above, WebSphere is great when it works well. The problem is that it rarely does. I have had a host of issues with this product that have driven me up the walls. I am sure you have seen the comments online if you've looked this product up about how complex it is. It is very convoluted, and complex is a light term.
I am also not sure if others have experienced what I would call 'bugs' but others on my team call defects with the product. It mostly happens during upgrades and it is a headache that i am sure many people would prefer to be without.

**What problems is IBM WebSphere solving and how is that benefiting you?**

It isn't honestly solving any problems as it was causing them instead.

We have since moved away from WebSphere with great pain since the cost of it was so high.

**What do you like best about IBM WebSphere?**

This was one of the first and best Applications servers I have ever worked with. Great to run Java based Applications with good Cluster Management Features. Best part is that IBM runs the updates in a timely manner ensuring and fixing the Bugs and poor performance from previous versions. I have looked at the tool from the support perspective as I was part of production Support team but I have heard that it works great for the Developers.

There is a WAS support available for people seeking more help with the tool. Very Handy.

**What do you dislike about IBM WebSphere?**

From Support perspective again I felt that the logs did not give much information to debug the issues we saw. Other than that I did not have any problems.

**What problems is IBM WebSphere solving and how is that benefiting you?**

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Barbara-éctor M. | Consultora Marketing & Publicidad, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** November 18, 2020

**What do you like best about IBM WebSphere?**

IBM Websphere application server is one of the most established running application servers from IBM, however, they continue updating it to the more latest rendition. It has all the fundamental usefulness that you will search for in an application server. You can have every one of your applications particularly the Java manufactured applications on it. Our total middleware devices like MQ and Message Broker were incorporated effectively and safely with it. it's powerful, it depends on a normalizing j2ee engine hierarchy by IBM and has SSO technology accessible out of the container. IBM's uphold is amazing. It likewise awesome bunch the executives includes alongside logging usefulness. It has WAS support through which arrangement should be possible without explicit coding.

**What do you dislike about IBM WebSphere?**

Barely any usefulness like following and troubleshooting isn't up to the imprints as the logging isn't so explicit about mistakes and alerts. Message engine design is a troublesome and unwieldy cycle. Some of the time sending does not reflect appropriately. It's excessively big. Building up an application with Websphere is horrendously moderate. It gives all regardless of whether you don't require it. Sometimes it comes down of no reason. we face a repeated error of node is not available. or could not synchronize the config between all nodes. we have to restart the server from the command line not from the console. The console cannot do ann admin functionalities.

**What problems is IBM WebSphere solving and how is that benefiting you?**

I would prescribe to anybody to truly think do they truly require IBM WebSphere or if their business issue could be understood utilizing some other (more steady and less expensive) alternatives. It's been a smooth encounter working with IBM Websphere. Reconciliation with other Websphere apparatuses is simple and speedy. The organization and facilitating, both are steady and secure.

  ### 42. IBM Websphere Smooth Integration with T24

**Reviewed Date:** January 24, 2021

**What do you like best about IBM WebSphere?**

It is very convenient and easy to integrate T24 with IBM Websphere. We have been using IBM websphere in one of the largest commercial banks in Pakistan. We have integrated our Internet banking and few other banking software systems via IBM Websphere to T24 core banking system.

**What do you dislike about IBM WebSphere?**

Customer support TAT (Turn Around Time) should be made better.

**What problems is IBM WebSphere solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Apart from smooth integration, IBM also offers critical checks and balances that cannot be implemented directly in T24 e.g. if there is any transaction coming in from any alternate delivery channel that does not fulfill the regulatory requirement we can stop the transaction in IBM websphere without putting load on our T24 core banking systems.

**What do you dislike about IBM WebSphere?**

is very complicated to migrate one version another version for example to migrate java 8 to java 11, because the environment is different.

**Recommendations to others considering IBM WebSphere:**

should be familiarize with Java, Linux and UNIX. because if you have knowledge for that technologies is most easy to learn IBM WAS for my opinion.

**What problems is IBM WebSphere solving and how is that benefiting you?**

**What do you dislike about IBM WebSphere?**

There are times when the administrators would like to do something that the software will not handle. I guess we think out of the box to much. There are a few times when we have to update xml files because those files didn't get updated.

**Recommendations to others considering IBM WebSphere:**

Make sure you know your client requirements before doing your instation.

**What problems is IBM WebSphere solving and how is that benefiting you?**

The software was able to handle our way of using buses which was not normal but it works great. We have applications that require multiple servers that must communicate with each other in real time.
