**What do you like best about Hex?**

The way it can aggregate seemlessly data from different datasources (CSV, Snowflake, ...), super easy to spin a new chart and tweak a few options to get the display I want. I particularely appreciate the fact that now SQL cells can render as charts.

**What do you dislike about Hex?**

Reusing code and components isn't easy, lot of expecations aren't met such as versionning (pick a version, not migrate to the latest). We can integrate with GitHub but if we go down that path it feels as if we would want a homemade tool and not in Hex.

**What problems is Hex solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Low code way of connecting to different data sources
Good looking visualization (vs pyplot) with little effort

**What do you like best about Hex?**

Hex produces very pretty dashboards and I hear that presentation mode as well. It's easy to get set up and plugged into my organization's Snowflake account. It's relatively easy to make nice-looking charts, although the number of options is limited.

**What do you dislike about Hex?**

Things sometimes randomly glitch or can give strange SQL results (e.g. from the automatic typing). Memory errors are encountered far more frequently than with Jupyter notebook. Runtime is heavily impacted by time of day. Can't use local dataframes and Snowflake connections in the same SQL cell.

**What problems is Hex solving and how is that benefiting you?**

**What do you like best about Hex?**

HEX enables us to quickly integrate Snowflake, Splunk and Crowdstrike to build a robust and powerful security detection and alerting platform. The python/pandas native approach enables development of complex alerting capabilities while ease of visualizations provides confidence in correctness of the underlying logic. Further we have been able to quickly create investigation applications using HEX app view, that are used by security analysts without programming experience during incident.

**What do you dislike about Hex?**

HEX would benifit from a deeper integration with Slack and other tools, currently the alerts are limited and required us to write our own small library to for fine-grained alerting.

**What problems is Hex solving and how is that benefiting you?**

- Syncing information from Splunk, Crowdstrike into Snowflake via scheduled projects.
- Complex alerting logic using Python powered by ML 
- Ability to craft visualizations that give us insight
- Lightweight apps that allow security analysts to quickly query identifiers across data sources during incidents

Easy to get started, especially for someone like me who mostly works with Python and SQL

**What do you dislike about Hex?**

Apps can be a bit slow, but that's a very tough problem for Hex to solve
Also it would be nice if users with view only access to apps could drop in files, e.g. csv's, and then the app's code could process those user-uploads

**What problems is Hex solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Super easy to quickly prototype and develop apps
Very nice and easy connecting to databases, and nice how you can use SQL or pandas on any table

Easy onboarding, it was straightforward to figure out how to create charts, reports, analysis. The connection to our BigQuery tables is also seamless

When I use faceting, I can't edit the axis names.

**What do you like best about Hex?**

Easily the best tool on the market for going from a hypothesis/idea to execution for data science/analytics power users. Reliably connects to all of the most popular databases. Intuitive to query from wherever you want, and to manipulate data within SQL or Python. Excellent data visualization options. I haven't had to log into Mode Analytics for almost a year (thankfully!).

**What do you dislike about Hex?**

Hex definitely feels like the new kid on the block, and is not necessarily as feature-rich as incumbent tools. What it does, it does fantastically, and they are constantly adding new features to match and beat their competitors. But it is still missing some things like easy Slack notifications, easy web embedding of images/maps, etc.

**What problems is Hex solving and how is that benefiting you?**

I can easily pull data from any of my team's databases, and quickly get a Python notebook running to analyze/process that data. Visualizations are also fantastic - in particular, creating a heatmap from custom geoJSON files is way simpler than I had expected.

**What do you like best about Hex?**

We love Hex at Inventa because it is reliable, easy to use, and simply to maintain. It's simple for our data team to create some resource intensive analysis and workloads, but it's also very easy for a Business Analyst to use it for creating a dashboard or other type of analysis conducted by the business team.

For admins, I can keep projects organized, users and permissions well defined.

**What do you dislike about Hex?**

The few points of improvement I have are:
Putting more constraints on how users can interact with the Library, Components, and now Collections. In a governance standpoint, the amount of freedom each user has to create any of the objects mentioned makes really complicated to keep them organized and clean.

There's no admin api, to enable, disable users, check for last logins and manage it without going in the platform, same thing for projects.

Github integration has some flaws, as it's not uncommon for it to be stuck in PRs, even after they get approved and merged in GitHub.

**What problems is Hex solving and how is that benefiting you?**

We're solving two main issues, a computing platform for Data Science and Machine Learning, as we would have from Databricks, SageMaker and so on. 

An integrated BI tool for end users.

**What do you like best about Hex?**

I've worked with many tools to deliver valuable insights, beautiful visualizations, and tailored dashboards to stakeholders. Still, none of them can compare to Hex regarding how easy it is to make something look beautiful. With Hex, what you get straight "out of the box" just from dragging and dropping looks nice enough that you can feel proud when a stakeholder inevitably takes a screenshot of your report to add to their PowerPoint presentation (It's inevitable). The reports feel natural and easy to use and will make your end users want to come back again and again.

**What do you dislike about Hex?**

The only place of improvement I could give for Hex is to allow for more customization of the layout on the front end of reports. Allowing a cell to be normal width in a wide-width report with center orientation and other customization options like that could help inspire other report-builders to do something new and different.

**What problems is Hex solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Hex is helping our organization make beautiful reports while also allowing our analysts to focus on what is important - the data. Our analysts don't have to spend several hours in customization, organizing the format, changing fonts, choosing backgrounds, etc. They basically just drag and drop the report elements, and the report is done and looks done too.

- Very intuitive and easy to use
- Allows me to combine SQL and Python in one notebook
- Allows me to create graphs right after the queries
- Customer support is very responsive
-  Very dynamic - new functionalities (e.g., folders) are added frequently

**What do you dislike about Hex?**

Not so much points I dislike, but missing functionalities:
- Labels for totals in grouped bar charts (right now we can only include label in each of the subgroups, but not fot the total)
- Not possible to "copy paste" charts from one notebook to another (sometimes I need to use the same chart in 2 different notebooks and I need to recreate the chart) -> would be great if you could add "other projects" as a source for the app, and I would just get charts from other projects to include in my new projects
- App layout: the layout of the app still feels like a A4 paper with charts -> would be great to get a more 'dashboard' look -> possibility to add 10 (for ex) different charts in one page without having to scroll down
- No index in the 'project tab' -> everytime I want to see a chart in the project tab, I need to scroll down to that query/chart: I have some projects with over 30 queries and charts so it can be a long process.  Would be great to have an index with the dataframes so I could jump to specific dataframes straight from the top of the page

**What do you like best about Hex?**

Hex enables you to seamlessly switch between SQL and Python and build simple visualizations using the built-in chart features. 
It's really straightforward, and it took me only a few days to switch from using spreadsheets to preparing reports to have all the analysis steps performed within Hex. 
The parameter features allow you to filter the data easily; components save time when doing a repeatable analysis, and variables allow you to easily understand where the numbers are coming from - in other words, there's no need to write separate documentation for your analysis since the work in Hex is documenting itself.
Whenever I had a technical issue, I received help from Hex support within hours. The team regularly delivers new features, so it feels like Christmas morning whenever I get a Hex product newsletter.

**What do you dislike about Hex?**

If you're looking for something to replace data visualization tools such as Tableau - Hex is definitely not the answer (yet?). It's not the best tool for visual data exploration - it works better when the analysis steps/metrics and visualizations are planned. The built-in chart options are quite limited - they cover ~90% of my needs. For the other 10% I need to get creative ;)

I use hex daily for data analysis and dashboards - it fulfills most of my use cases as a data analyst. A huge benefit is that there's no need to document the work since it's documenting itself, and the analysis is replicable without effort.

**What do you like best about Hex?**

The ability to seamlessly integrate SQL and Python without the need for additional libraries like SQLAlchemy is fantastic. Generating charts and applying filters is a breeze, and it saves a lot of time that would otherwise be spent writing code for charts. Sharing and collaborating with colleagues is effortless. To put it simply, I would be extremely disappointed if I were to lose access to this tool.

**What do you dislike about Hex?**

We need to bring the co-pilot feature onboard. It would be helpful to have the ability to scroll through dataframes easily, as currently, it's challenging to view a large amount of tabular data. I often resort to downloading the data into Excel for better visualization.

**What problems is Hex solving and how is that benefiting you?**

- It saves me time exploring complex data sets via built-in visulaisations filtering etc
- building complex models and running code blocks stage by stage rather than building a lot of CTE's and running them all each time.

It's a must-to-have tool for data analytics; it has the flexibility to connect with different types of data warehouse and query languages; can help create simple, clear visualization of data; AI magic feature is helpful for coding.

The embedded visualization tool can be improved to be more customizable. For example, current pie charts cannot display both value and percentage. AI Magic feature can be improved on its accuracy. Sometimes it doesn't understand prompt properly, repeating same mistakes in the coding.

One of the best things about Hex is that they innovate at a breakneck pace.  The features avaible 18 months ago were impressive, but now they're divine!

**What do you dislike about Hex?**

I don't have much to say here.  Sure, there are a few features I'd like to see and some minor improvements to others, but I'm confident they'll get there.

Hex allows us to rapidly iterate on analyzing data using advanced SQL/Python code and then quickly publish those results as dashboards to non-coding data consumers.

I like that it is possible to mix SQL and Python. The idea of storing a query results straight to a dataframe is awesome. I also like some chart options, that's is very handy.

**What do you dislike about Hex?**

I realized that sometimes when I filter a dataframe in a chart, it modifies the underlying dataframe. That can be annoying, because I have to run everything again to have the original dataframe. I think that's not a expected behaviour.

**What problems is Hex solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Hex is very useful for exploratory analysis and sharing insights with stakeholders. I also think it is easy to collaborate.

Incredible product vision, iterating very fast to integrate with he latest advances in the industry such as Semantic Layer, Python support on Snowflake, and even AI Magic. My team loves it and it made us deliver more value to the business than any other tool

**What do you dislike about Hex?**

I wish the ceilling for the advanced UX would be higher. I feel I have infinite freedome to do backend stuff (python) but I'm missing similar power on the frontend. I think the visualizations and widgets are still a bit imature. We opted to do our own viz components using commercial js libs. While they work great if you're doing read-only stuff, the momenet you want to interact with the runtime or add writebacks, its a dead end (to be clear you can do writeback using hex native but for more advanced stuff you cant)

**What problems is Hex solving and how is that benefiting you?**

We answer questions to our users using Hex. We also build a variety of prototypes to leverage AI, generate embeddings, scrape pages you name it. Its our Swiss army knife for many things.

The interface allows to write queries in a fast and easy way and connect between them.

The enviroment is not always stable...There are some bugs.

**What do you like best about Hex?**

Very intuitive interface that abstracts away much of the complexity of plain notebooks. The cell-based workflows make it possible to break down analyses into logical steps, and the in-memory caching helps keep warehouse costs low(er).

**What do you dislike about Hex?**

It can be challenging to navigate the project page easily, which is an issue when you have a sizeable multi-step analysis or dashboard. The outline view is helpful, but it would be great to go one step higher so that it's easy to navigate throughout your project based on your chosen cell name.

**What problems is Hex solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Hex is giving us an easy-to-use yet highly flexible tool for a number of use cases: exploratory analyses, dashboards, root cause analysis, and more. We continually find new ways to use Hex to solve a business problem we are facing. The benefit for us is that we can enable our engineers and business analysts with the tools they need to quickly come up with solutions to problems they are facing.

Hex is very flexible and is able to support a wide variety of use cases for modern data teams, from in-depth analysis and scheduled jobs to simple SQL-based dashboards.

The development experience in Hex is basically a Jupyter notebook, which can become unwieldy as a project or analysis grows and becomes more complicated.

Hex allows the data team to incorporate SQL-based data visualization with python-based analysis in a straightforward way, which allows one tool to support a wide variety of use cases and reduces fragmentation of work product.

**What do you like best about Hex?**

I like that the product lets us mix python and sql in a very simple and intuitive way, and that it's in general very flexible.

**What do you dislike about Hex?**

I think that the product is still young and there is a lot that can be improved. Here are a few things I (and some of my colleagues) find problematic. I will be super direct in the feedback and won't polish it much, hope that's ok!

- The frontend in the logic section is very very slow for long or complex projects. Scrolling becomes incredibly slow, and this slows down our productivity noticeably. 
- The offline managmenet is terrible (or rather, non existent). If my internet disconnects and I don't notice (which happened a few times), after it comes back all my changes just disappear. I don't get any notification that this happend, and I can't even know what I changed in the meantime. It's just terrible! 
- The fact that it's impossible to understand what caused an error during the pubblication of an app is incredibly inefficient, especially in long notebooks (we can have notebooks that take 2 hours to run!!). The fact that you have to rerun the WHOLE published app after fixing a small bug or after changing the title of a plot or some other minor thing like that is just silly.
- Often cells get stuck as "queued for execution" without any reason.
- The 20 outputs per block limit is annoying,  because we often use internal python libraries or loops that need to plot more than 20 things and we have to find workarounds for that. Can this be lifted? 
- While printing multiple things from the same block, they then can't be reorganized in the app section. This is annoying as well because if I want to neatly organize a notebook I am forced to put plots in different blocks, but often (as I said before), we use libraries to print multiple plots in sequence, which then can't be reorganized.
- While potentially powerful, in its current implementation the new search feature is currently very bad. Finding stuff has become complicated, and often I don't find it. This is for a few main reasons: It has too much noise, it seems that it's not good at finding substrings in the title (e.g., experiment_xxx is not found when looking for xxx), and it seems like it doesn't prioritize the title over contents of the project. Also, I would leave the title as the default search target and then add the possibility of seaching in the contents as an advanced option, to reduce noise.
- Organizing of our organization's hex is a mess. Tags have become unusable as we added a lot of them, and we can't even scroll properly. Also, it's not a scalable solution at all. For an organization like ours with hundred of notebooks I think that a navigation system with folders and such is a must. Collections go in that direction but they are still not a scalable solution. 
- Not being able to query from different data sources in a single SQL cell can be very annoying at times. I understand it can be technically complicated to integrate this but it would be very handy
- It would be nice to have a neater, more intuitive and faster way to bunch groups of related blocks together to perform operations on them (moving, copying, deleting) but also to have a cleaner organization of the logic section, which is hard to navigate for long notebooks at the moment. 
- Adding plots on top of each other was useful, but not doable anymore (feedback from a colleague)

Hex's notebook is miles ahead of other products out there and has everything you need for running an analysis. Absolutely love the fact that you can move between SQL and Python so seamlessly. Writing SQL against dataframes and Python against query outputs is just so magical. Passing variables from the front end "app" to the backend notebook has been extremely valuable too for so many use cases. The Git integration brings a lot to the table, allowing our team to back up our code and also run code reviews before moving dev work to production. 

In addition to a high-caliber product, the Hex team is innovative, responsive, and consistently (and rapidly) enhancing their product.

**What do you dislike about Hex?**

Updated this because what I wrote previously is no longer valid with the release of new features.

Hex is an awesome tool, but if I had to pick something is that the out of box charting is kind of lacking. Ive tried to use it a couple of times but then ended up writing Python.

There are many things I like about the tool:
- Clean UX and easy to navigate
- Environments are easy to maintain and spin up
- Python to SQL (vice-versa) has super easy handoff
- Sharing capabilities are amazing, charts or scripts
- Graph view is really handy in knowing which Cell links to which
- Building quick scripted apps is super easy
- Scheduling apps is also really easy

Overall the tool is fantastic, something that they're actively working on are:
- Improving charts and filters/sorting
- Better connection with GitHub would be nice, just to see exact changes in GitHub. To be fair, there is already good version control, so you don't lose any changes but a way to see it in GitHub would be nice

Hex Tech team is actively working on a ton of new features, which is amazing! Soon to be the best tool in the data world (if it's not already)

Since we're just getting started with our data team, it's best to use a tool like Hex which can span across multiple functions. It can allow us to do the extraction, transformation, and loading of data, and helps with visuals as well. This is a perfect tool for our small team.

I love that I can work on a combined SQL/Python project in a single notebook that I can share to collaborate with other users. In particular, when conducting an investigation, it's really helpful to be able to make new queries that are based on the output of previous queries, just as you can in a Jupyter notebook. I also appreciate the distinction between seat types - we are only charged for "Author" seats, whereas some competitors charge equally for each seat regardless of the level of usage.

**What do you dislike about Hex?**

The visualizations could use some more improvement. For example, the number of gridlines doesn't automatically adjust based on the number of tick marks you have on each axis.

Another issue: autocomplete works pretty well, but it seems to default everything to uppercase. Not sure if this is an issue with how field names are cased in our particular Snowflake instance, or a more general issue w/ connecting to Snowflake. This is frustrating from a readability perspective, especially for field names.

There's nothing really to dislike about Hex - we're mainly excited to see future iterations of some current features! Everything _just works_. No fussing with packages or versions, UI elements are intuitive and easy to use, app layer is fantastic. If you had told me that I could put the level of scenario modeling we have today in front of a non-technical user and they wouldn't have to touch code, I would have laughed in your face.

Charting.... charts are ugly. Great that they exist, and way easier to use than other Python packages! But coming from a Looker or Tableau-esque design palette, Hex has a long way to go before I feel comfortable using it as my one-and-only presentation tool for data.

Most of our use cases breakdown between two areas: scenario modeling (what happens if we have this level of marketing spend? this conversion increase? this fulfillment matrix), and simple internal apps (lookup info in system A, make API call to system B, insert data into system C). Hex is extremely powerful and easy to use for both use cases.

Hex was extremely welcoming. It has phenomenal defaults, but also lets you use more nuanced and advanced tools if you'd like. I was able to make a very presentable notebook on my first go, and I've never even used Jupyter before! I think tools like this, that break down walls for highly technical people to communicate with non-technical folks, are extremely important.

Hex has an opinionated design. I think this is a really good thing! But there were a few times I wanted slightly more flexibility than was provided. I'm sure that'll come as the platform matures though, and would never hold me back from recommending Hex to another analyst.

Hex makes it really easy to spend as little time as possible on anything surrounding setup, infrastructure, and management and to focus your time on doing the work that matters.  It's intuitive, constantly improving, has all the right connections, and being able to switch back and forth between python and sql is really fun.

**What do you dislike about Hex?**

The dashboarding is still a bit clunky - it often stalls, is not quite agile enough to really build the things you want to and isn't the most intuitive for nontechnical users to interact with.  I would call it a great place to prototype but not for production-worthy consumption en masse.  Also, the not yet existant ability to not just pull from sql but also push back would be really great (I think this is on the roadmap) .

We use hex mainly for data science research questions, as well as some scheduled ETL jobs that are messier so they can't be handled easily with a snowpipe etc.  We also use it for the dashboards to share work and access to our databases with less technical folks.

1. It is so easy to set up and get started. If you especially have a smaller team, Hex is great because you don't have to think about maintaining anything from the infrastructure standpoint.
2. Hex makes it so easy to share your work with your stakeholders, set up scheduled runs, and build filters so you don't have to duplicate your code for similar requests. 
3. Building reports/dashboards/apps on Hex has been super easy. They adopted Jupyter-style notebooks for their development environment -- it makes it super easy to get started if you ever used Jupyter, and you can use SQL and Python together without dealing with writing wrappers for your SQL in Python.

**What do you dislike about Hex?**

The organization of the queries/reports could definitely be better as there are just tags for now for you to organize them. However, this is not a pain for us as the # of queries we have is not that large.

Hex serves as a robust workbench for all parts of the data science process. Exploration of data and communication of insights are made frictionless through Hex's many features, like in-notebook SQL, an intuitive app builder, sharing, scheduled execution, and more.

Other BI tools focused on the no-code data visualization experience, and many do it quite well. Hex isn't quite there with their no-code visualization feature. but will be able to catch up rapidly.

1) The ability to move between SQL and Python. SQL query outputs are stored as dataframes, which can be manipulated in Python or queried via SQL. This allows for incredibly easy and powerful exploratory data analysis, and after completing EDA it's dead simple to build a web-app for viewers with only relevant visualizations and tables.

2) The flexibility of Hex notebooks. We began using Hex for EDA, but quickly found use cases outside of that where Hex truly thrives. Recently, we've been able to use Hex to easily build QA tools comparing data obtained from our DBs as well directly from APIs (using the python requests package, which comes installed with Hex).

**What do you dislike about Hex?**

The standard visualizations are a bit limited, but this is not a large issue as our team uses primarily open source Python or R packages.

**Recommendations to others considering Hex:**

We originally had concerns Hex wouldn't meet our basic BI and dashboarding needs, but it is a fantastic tool for both EDA and building long-term dashboards.

We started using Hex only for exploratory data analysis, but quickly expanded beyond that use case. We now have migrated most of our dashboards away from Tableau into Hex, and have even built QA tools for our operations team powered by Hex. The flexibility of Hex allows us to build a variety of analytical tools for our internal teams. It's become an indispensable tool in our data team's arsenal.
