## ExpressionEngine Reviews
  ### 1. Simple CMS with Room for Visual Update

**Rating:** 2.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Rhianna C. | Secretary, Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** April 16, 2026

**What do you like best about ExpressionEngine?**

I find ExpressionEngine pretty simple to use, which is important for someone like me who may not have technical website skills. It also offers great tools for user management, SEO, and categorization, allowing me to ensure colleagues have the appropriate permissions and optimize our content effectively. Additionally, I liked the CSS editing feature it offered.

**What do you dislike about ExpressionEngine?**

It did feel clunky towards the end. The interface looked quite dated and felt a bit slow. It just needed a bit of a facelift visually.

**What problems is ExpressionEngine solving and how is that benefiting you?**

ExpressionEngine allows me to create, organize, publish, and optimize content without technical skills. It lets us manage user permissions effectively and optimizes content by providing analysis, rather than just publishing and hoping for the best.

  ### 2. My "go to" Content Management System loved by me and my clients.

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** James C. | Creative Director, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** June 10, 2025

**What do you like best about ExpressionEngine?**

The best Content Management System (CMS) around – ExpressionEngine is a powerful system built for adaptability. As a designer It offers unparalleled flexibility enabling me to build what I want rather than an other platforms that are bulky to use.

It is incredibly secure as well and has a great team that are dedicated to security monitoring any threats and releasing any updates as needed. They also have a great support system with a dedicated slack channel allowing you to converse with other developers to help with any coding issues / problems you have.

The CMS is incredibly easy to set up and get running and takes less than 5 mins.

**What do you dislike about ExpressionEngine?**

There was a little bit of a learning curve but the community support is amazing.

**What problems is ExpressionEngine solving and how is that benefiting you?**

ExpressionEngine is the only Content Management System I now use for building my websites for clients. It's incredibly customisable and my clients love using it. For me as a developer it's incredible powerful and I've never found something that it can't do whilst my clients love how simple and user friendly it is.

  ### 3. The Best Website Content Management System

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Tim C. | Web Developer, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** June 17, 2024

**What do you like best about ExpressionEngine?**

ExpressionEngine is great for the following reasons:
- It's flexible, and we can implement any design
- It's highly secure with an incredible track record for security
- It doesn't make assumptions about the website design or content. This allows us to create exactly what we need for each website. We don't need to "overwrite" themes or default content types (e.g. - WordPress)

**What do you dislike about ExpressionEngine?**

ExpressionEngine is great, but it has a misperception in the marketplace as "for developers". In truth, any web CMS needs a good developer -- just an any instrument needs a good musician to play it.

**What problems is ExpressionEngine solving and how is that benefiting you?**

It is a repliable platform with great security and flexibilty, allowing us to build out great websites for our clients.

  ### 4. EE - The Most Secure, Pure Content Mgmt System Out There

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Doug B. | Founder, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** January 03, 2024

**What do you like best about ExpressionEngine?**

ExpressionEngine stands out as a robust and genuine content management system (CMS), distinguishing itself from mere page builders in the web development landscape. With a focus on flexibility and extensibility, ExpressionEngine caters to the needs of developers and content creators alike, making it a versatile solution for building and managing websites.

One key differentiator is its commitment to being a true CMS rather than a page builder. ExpressionEngine empowers users to create and organize content in a structured manner, offering a sophisticated system for handling various types of data. For sites that truly care about the structure of their content, and ensuring that they can optimize for SEO, EE is the #1 choice.

EE also stands out as a pioneer in security among CMS platforms. The team managing this ensures there is a constant eye on what is both required as features, and needeed to keep it secure. Regular updates and a vigilant security team contribute to a robust defense against potential vulnerabilities, instilling confidence in both developers and site administrators.

EE remains a top choice for those seeking a genuine CMS experience, offering unparalleled flexibility, security, and a commitment to true content management.

**What do you dislike about ExpressionEngine?**

ExpressionEngine has a bit of a learning curve to get working. It requires some development knowledge, as it relies fully on your content and your design to power what is displayed on the front end.

**What problems is ExpressionEngine solving and how is that benefiting you?**

EE gives you all of the power of a content management system without jumbling things up with a number of plugins (though there are a lot of great add-ons).

  ### 5. ExpressionEngine helped our company thrive

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** John D. | Editor-in-Chief, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** November 18, 2021

**What do you like best about ExpressionEngine?**

I find the flexibility of EE to make it the most capable CMS around. I've been using it since EE1 in 2007 and have never been disappointed with what it has given us the capability of doing on our travel-related website.

**What do you dislike about ExpressionEngine?**

I dislike that the tight-knit community EE had built around its product seemingly disappeared after EE3's release. I think internal company issues plagued the software for a while and some developers and community users jumped ship. EE6 is in the hands of a new private company, which has improved the quality of EE, but the community has never fully rebounded to what it was previously.

**What problems is ExpressionEngine solving and how is that benefiting you?**

EE is our complete publishing platform for our content-based websites

  ### 6. Good for developers, not good for users

**Rating:** 0.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Design | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** October 15, 2021

**What do you like best about ExpressionEngine?**

I liked the extensibility of it and how you could modify and shape the platform to work the way you wanted it to. There were a lot of developer friendly controls

**What do you dislike about ExpressionEngine?**

The platform has no thought put into it for the end-user and instead it's something that gets bolted onto the back end of a website built by boutique developers that overcharge immensely for their services. My experience with clients using it has been that they are clueless on how it works, regardless of documentation. They end up not using the contact management system, defeating the entire purpose of it

**What problems is ExpressionEngine solving and how is that benefiting you?**

The problem it solves is providing customers with a content management system for their website. My experience, it doesn't actually solve this problem and just creates new problems.

  ### 7. Expression Engine is a great platform, stay tuned for EE6

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Christian P. | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** September 17, 2020

**What do you like best about ExpressionEngine?**

I've been using Expression Engine for many years, I have experience from EE 1 to the latest install on 5 and what a journey it has been. I love being able to create fluid fields so that my users can create their own pages. I like that you're able to do segment based dynamic pages without having to faff about with pure PHP. Also Code Ignitor and Expression Engine has a lot of support forums, so I'm usually able to fix my issue without much hassle.

**What do you dislike about ExpressionEngine?**

Even though 6 is coming soon and by the screenshots it's looking promising, I really dislike the grid. It's not very responsive and the more fields you have; the smaller the boxes get. I built a plugin which allows me to put it in a tab view, makes it much easier for my clients to manage. Secondly, I don't like that you can't duplicate an entry! The UX of the control panel can be quite hard to explain to non-dev minded users and this can sometimes be an issue to get users to play around and learn.

**Recommendations to others considering ExpressionEngine:**

Hold out for it, get used to the latest version and be ready for 6 as it's looking like a great and promising update that competes with the current CMS platforms. If you want a solution that is free and open source with a great community of developers around it, look no further. The documentation is easy to read, if you have little to basic knowledge of PHP/code ignitor, you should't have any issues figuring out how Expression Engine works and runs. The provided entry/category tags allow you access the database quickly and find the exact content you're after.

**What problems is ExpressionEngine solving and how is that benefiting you?**

It's a client friendly CMS so giving my clients the ability to edit what is on the pages is a great benefit to have. It's less bulky than a WordPress install and you have everything built in that you need. I use a minimal amount of plugins which is great as I hate when they go out of date due to PHP versions and I have to try and fix them.

  ### 8. Flexible and customizable CMS

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Nelly M. | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** March 27, 2020

**What do you like best about ExpressionEngine?**

ExpressionEngine is an extremely flexible platform. You can create your markup and structure your site as you want. It is very secure, and it is constantly updated it to keep it so. It recently became open source, so now you don't have to pay a license.

**What do you dislike about ExpressionEngine?**

Some features can't be obtained out of the box, you need to purchase add-ons or develop them yourself. It needs add-ons to be truly multi-language. The community is not what it used to be, but we hope it grows again now that EE is open source.

**Recommendations to others considering ExpressionEngine:**

ExpressionEngine is open source, but consider paying for a support plan, specially if it's your first time implementing it.

**What problems is ExpressionEngine solving and how is that benefiting you?**

I have used ExpressionEngine to create sites of all sizes with custom designs. My customers love the ease of use and flexibility of the CMS. Features like search, categories, member management are built-in. There are e-commerce solutions too.

  ### 9. Great intuitive CMS

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Sudhamsha S. | Senior Software Engineer, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** March 23, 2020

**What do you like best about ExpressionEngine?**

- Built on a simple CodeIgniter Framework.
- Any changes needed to upgrade the system or the Core expression engine can be easily made without any issue.
- Be it simple website development or complex application, Expression engine is a breeze to use.
- It is fast and has caching features to be used
- Templates and their scalability
-You can create and run multiple sites, this is huge benefit in my opinion when you have international sites or any distributor based model
- The live preview model was a latest addition which is awesome to update the site and check if you want to see any issues
- Ability to install multiple plugins which can help you take you from zero to hundred in no time!
- Currently the software is open source, which is HUGE! I started using expression engine when it was 299 and cannot believe it is free now with the amount of features it gives!

**What do you dislike about ExpressionEngine?**

- Sometimes complex to build a simple plugin.
- If you just need to write a simple plugin to extract some API data, it will still take time write it
- kind of becomes slow when your database is huge (in majority of the cases caching solves this issue but plese make sure to use it in a correct way)

**Recommendations to others considering ExpressionEngine:**

Please take care when you are trying to show huge data on the page or have huge database. Use caching properly

**What problems is ExpressionEngine solving and how is that benefiting you?**

- I used ExpressionEngine to build anywhere from a basic website to a complex web application.
- I have realised how flexible it is to scale up with the modules and plugin development features.

  ### 10. Long time user, and still deploying it

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Dennis W. | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** April 02, 2020

**What do you like best about ExpressionEngine?**

I like how ExpressionEngine hovers in the middle ground between CMS and framework. It's really easy to deploy simple administration interfaces for my clients, and the "you're on your own" approach to the public-facing frontend really gives a lot of flexibility to truly customize the platform for specific use cases. And now it's free!

**What do you dislike about ExpressionEngine?**

The third-party ecosystem is a little bit lacking compared to platforms like Wordpress, which may be a drawback for some, but I like how it keeps the system from being too reliant on third-party plugins and extensions, making it easier to maintain in the long term. The learning curve is also somewhat steeper, but in the long term that's worth it too. The internal search function is also a bit "cold and mechanical" (for lack of a better term) compared to the results that say, a Google site search will give you.

**Recommendations to others considering ExpressionEngine:**

Read the developer documentation! Like I said, the learning curve is a little steeper than other platforms, but the docs will tell you pretty much everything you need to know. EE Harbor also has some pretty useful extensions, particularly Editor and Channel Images.

**What problems is ExpressionEngine solving and how is that benefiting you?**

It is my go-to solution for clients who need any kind of basic content management system, and after using it for various projects since the v2 days, it has nestled itself nicely into some of the web consulting services I offer as a freelancer.

  ### 11. Brilliant CMS, love using it for all my clients.

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Christian P. | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** March 31, 2020

**What do you like best about ExpressionEngine?**

Expression Engine is good for member management, create channels and gives you plenty of parameters and variables to use in the templates to create a dynamic, easy to use php website. My clients really enjoy using the fluid field type to have the ability to build their own pages, this is good for the current trends to be fully customisable. I like how easy it is to set up a new website and attach the CRM to it, I have now got a vanilla site set up so that when I go to build something new all my preferences are already there for me to use.

**What do you dislike about ExpressionEngine?**

I would like to be able to connect category fields via relationship field inside a fluid field. The grid field UI isn't great either. I'd like to the ability to assign member groups to entries. I would be nice to have structure included in the product, however I have created my own version. It would be good to have more form functions on the standard email plugin, I know solutions and add-ons are out there but I like have the least amount of plugins so that when it comes to upgrading the system it is a smooth process.

**Recommendations to others considering ExpressionEngine:**

I would use this product if you're looking at creating different channels that include blogs, careers, pages for a website and if you have little to no knowledge of DB set up. You want clear and understandable member management system and everything you need to maintain and manage a website all in one place.

**What problems is ExpressionEngine solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Being able to create secure websites, less hackers, good member management system in place, I enjoy using the fluid field type with the live preview, its a great way to help out the clients when editing the website. Rememberable parameters and variables to make it easy to code in an HTML file.

  ### 12. Used to be great, not the case anymore

**Rating:** 3.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Naga P. | Software Engineer, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** March 24, 2020

**What do you like best about ExpressionEngine?**

It has a great combination of power and flexibility. Y

Anything that ExpressionEngine can't do out-of-the-box, can be done with add-ons, of which there are many (both free and paid)

**What do you dislike about ExpressionEngine?**

I don't think it is evolved well and not to mention some bugs not getting resolved in time. Each project tends to have a license overhead now that have to spend lots of money depending on the complexity

**Recommendations to others considering ExpressionEngine:**

Users who have voiced opinions because of the direction and progress that EE has taken, that doesn't make it a bad CMS and it continues to be a leading commercial offering.

**What problems is ExpressionEngine solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Obviously it saved lots of my time when developing tasks related to user management, custom pages, and user subscription

My role is to build the backend custom modules for registering the members using CRM data and my account module to manage their payments, notifications, news etc.

•	Developed Custom Signup Expression engine module with the data from, nested comments for each item in an entry.
•	Developed Custom Field types for postcode finder, bank card details look up and also custom vector map.
•	Developer custom plugins for events, calendars, to also communicate with Dynamics CRM.
•	Using phpodata SDK to read the data from CRM to read the club users.
•	Updating the Dynamics CRM using SOAP API.
•	Developing EE module for Nested commenting system with voting and reporting.

**Reviewed Date:** May 11, 2020

**What do you like best about ExpressionEngine?**

Designing your website as you like it. Expressionengine will fill the gaps, not the way around. I am not a programmer, but EE makes it so easy with creating your own short codes...

**What do you dislike about ExpressionEngine?**

To many major releases to fast... upgrading the bought modules can be a problem

**Recommendations to others considering ExpressionEngine:**

If you are looking for an way so you can keep full control of your design! Use EE

Sometimes complex to build a simple plugin.

- If you just need to write a simple plugin to extract some API data, it will still take time write it

- kind of becomes slow when your database is huge (in majority of the cases caching solves this issue but please make sure to use it in a correct way)

Learn the code

We were able to do an upgrade pretty quickly
- If you just need to write a simple plugin to extract some API data, it will still take time write it

  ### 15. A very professional development system

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Dobri B. | AI Architect, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** April 20, 2020

**What do you like best about ExpressionEngine?**

Flexibility. EE has enormous possibilities, along with great connections between them.

**What do you dislike about ExpressionEngine?**

Hard to find literature and lessons on it. Most of video courses are from enthusiasts. And there is no single textbook on EE, for free download. I found only 1 very expensive, and in addition - not shipped worldwide.

**Recommendations to others considering ExpressionEngine:**

A great solution for next level developers.
You can start with WordPress or Joomla, but one day you will discover EE.
Powerful, flexible, secure.
Just start using...

**What problems is ExpressionEngine solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Making sites from a scratch is very easy and effective.

With my new job I don't get to use EE enough anymore.

**What problems is ExpressionEngine solving and how is that benefiting you?**

At my last company, we had a rule that we approached every project looking to pick a CMS. EE was almost always the choice for all different types of projects.

  ### 17. A useful CMS for PHP developers but expensive addons

**Rating:** 3.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Pazbi Z. | Director, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** March 25, 2020

**What do you like best about ExpressionEngine?**

I found the use of templates with dynamic content allowed for the creation of tens to hundreds of pages to be created very easily. For complex websites with multiple content types, I haven't found an alternative that quite compares to the functionality featured in EE.

**What do you dislike about ExpressionEngine?**

Addons are very expensive compared to alternatives. The most E-commerce solutions for EE are over $900.

**Recommendations to others considering ExpressionEngine:**

I would recommend it for confident HTML and PHP developers who want a customizable experience and not worried about costs.

**What problems is ExpressionEngine solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Live Preview is one that saves so much time compared to WordPress or straight HMTL development.

**What do you like best about ExpressionEngine?**

Customization
Security
Powerful CMS
Multiple websites

**What do you dislike about ExpressionEngine?**

Expressions engine is a robust CMS, but it is completely lacking in levels, support, add-ons, and templates. If you don't have deep knowledge of coding, then you would surely need an expert to do the tasks.

**What problems is ExpressionEngine solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Main thing is lack of Add-ons and support.
In terms of benefits:
By using it, you are able to develop any kind of functioning website & even forum and ticket support system website as well.

To customise this cms, it takes bit long process and one has to follow its own method which can be done by technical user.

While working on ecommerce website built on ExpressionEngine I really found some great payment plugins which are very handy.

  ### 22. Use Expression engine

The expression engine is a great platform to work in as it makes your website more secure and versatile with strong coding and customization. It always works best for business websites, Industrial websites have good plugins too.

**What do you dislike about ExpressionEngine?**

It requires a bit time as the website you build is strong so for better things you always consume better time and this is it.

**What problems is ExpressionEngine solving and how is that benefiting you?**

It doesn't allow for hacking.
Makes your website more secure

  ### 23. A complex web CMS but there’s better modern solutions out there for your effort

**Rating:** 1.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Marketing and Advertising | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** April 19, 2020

**What do you like best about ExpressionEngine?**

Expression engine is great to build a large server side rendered web site or app. It can be cumbersome but it scales.

**What do you dislike about ExpressionEngine?**

It usually requires a lot of client training compared to competitors and on boarding new developers can be a hassle. I find I need a lot of plugins beyond the core to make it work for simple projects, minimizing boilerplate.

**Recommendations to others considering ExpressionEngine:**

There are probably better LAMP stack solutions out there. Keep looking, your dev team will thank you later.

**What problems is ExpressionEngine solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Custom websites for large clients (national brands). It allows my team to build around complex business requirements.

  ### 24. ExpressionEngine's templates & ability to integrate code from alternate projects are quite flexible

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Religious Institutions | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** May 30, 2020

**What do you like best about ExpressionEngine?**

Ease of integrating lots of dynamic content was our main push. Ability to include pre-existing code from existing projects was a bonus. Very flexible!

**What do you dislike about ExpressionEngine?**

Less about ExpressionEngine itself, complex sites are, well... complex! :) Training non-technical users took some additional work but once the process was learned, it was not a deal breaker.

**What problems is ExpressionEngine solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Used to create stories, integrat media and social media content. The flexibility in templates simplified administration and employee content creation.

  ### 25. Not the best but a viable alternative to WordPress

**What do you like best about ExpressionEngine?**

As a developer, when some client asks if there is an alternative of WordPress that he can use I recomend ExpressionEngine.

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** J.P. B. | Creative Director, Marketing and Advertising, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** December 19, 2018

**What do you like best about ExpressionEngine?**

Our favorite features of this content management system are 1) The high level of security and 2) the ability to bring in any customized design or framework and have it work flawlessly and unencumbered by the CMS. 3) ExpressionEngine allows our clients to own their data, contentand design and to take it with them wherever they go in terms of hosting and ongoing maintenance and upgrades. 4) ExpressionEngine can be simple for non-developers use and maintain if setup correctly with the client's needs and desires in mind. 5) The control panel is fast and flexible in terms of layout. You can customize it to suit your needs making it fast to use and greatly reduces the amount of clicks between sections compared to other CMS we've used.

**What do you dislike about ExpressionEngine?**

There is not much to dislike about ExpressionEngine. I guess our biggest issue would be the poor documentation of some 3rd-party addons when needed to complete a project. Since ExpressionEngine just changed to an open-source product, I imagine this issue will be resolved as more developers jump in to addon development.

**What problems is ExpressionEngine solving and how is that benefiting you?**

EE has helped us solve issues related to customized event management solutions, Easy site updates and maintenance on the client side, and has brought us the ability to truly customize both front and back-end of websites we develop. Additionally we have found that regular website and database management is quicker with EE which allows us to provide those services at lower costs to our clients.

  ### 36. Archaic and limiting

**Rating:** 1.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed Date:** September 07, 2019

**What do you like best about ExpressionEngine?**

Makes it easy to manage users, clean code output

**What do you dislike about ExpressionEngine?**

I dislike almost everything about Expression Engine. The UX is deplorable and we constantly get signed out and lose changes.

**Recommendations to others considering ExpressionEngine:**

Use Wordpress.

**What problems is ExpressionEngine solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Used with team of writers to update many location subsites of franchise company website.

  ### 37. User Friendly

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Robin C. | Author, Marketing and Advertising, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** June 28, 2018

**What do you like best about ExpressionEngine?**

I love the easy interface to update our sites.

**What do you dislike about ExpressionEngine?**

Sometimes it can be a little "chunky" and slow

**Recommendations to others considering ExpressionEngine:**

Once the system is in place, our tech team was able to "train" us no-techie people to update the system fairly easily.

**What problems is ExpressionEngine solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Utilize EE for our business website as well as for our event registration system. It has allowed us to take on some of the design elements to free up our actual tech team.

  ### 38. Powerful Content Management System

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Loren S. | Marketing Coordinator, Machinery, Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** November 16, 2017

**What do you like best about ExpressionEngine?**

ExpressionEngine is very user friendly! It has all the essentials you need for a CMS with zero clutter of junk. This was the first CMS I worked with at my job, which shows you that it was very easy to teach myself the ends and outs of EE.

**What do you dislike about ExpressionEngine?**

Sometimes creating forms on EE can be cumbersome. I had to have our website developer step in to help in this regard. Also we had to add captchas to our forms to stop spamming.

**Recommendations to others considering ExpressionEngine:**

You should definitely give EE a chance over WordPress.

**What problems is ExpressionEngine solving and how is that benefiting you?**

We have a great website that is managed by EE. It's also easy on our budget using EE, so that definitely helps our company.

  ### 39. Terrible CMS

**Rating:** 0.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Information Technology and Services | Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** January 23, 2018

**What do you like best about ExpressionEngine?**

I honestly don't like anything about this platform.

**What do you dislike about ExpressionEngine?**

Literally everything. The UI, the UX, the actual platform itself. Nothing is easy about using our navigating EE. When recently went through n EE upgrade that was originally supposed to take 1 week. It ended up taking 4 months.

**Recommendations to others considering ExpressionEngine:**

Do not use it. Build in wordpress or any other CMS.

**What problems is ExpressionEngine solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Allows us to publish content to our website(blog). There really are no advantages to using this platform. It seems to be the lowest form of content management platform on the market, and even consultants who work on implementing it can't fix the issues that arise in it.

  ### 40. Not recommended for Small Business

**Rating:** 1.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Lauren N. | Director of Marketing & eCommerce, Marketing and Advertising, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** June 01, 2017

**What do you like best about ExpressionEngine?**

The platform is somewhere in the middle of Wordpress and Larger platforms as far as ease of use is concerned.

**What do you dislike about ExpressionEngine?**

Most page and template changes, as well as cart changes are all code. Costs a lot of money to maintain and update this site. As a non developer I prefer something more user friendly to a non coder. Doing basic marketing functions on this site, like adding Landing pages, banners, pop ups, add-ons, etc are very challenging. Doesn't have a lot of basic stuff built in. Again, can be added but it's all code. Blog posts are hard to customize compared to other platforms I've used. Seems like it's missing a lot of basic stuff for a CMS.

**Recommendations to others considering ExpressionEngine:**

Unless you have a website budget in the $20k's + I'd steer clear. It takes a lot of development to set this up and get it running properly. We regret not using Shopify after only 6 months on this, because every change costs more money, and we're still not getting all the features available right out of the box with Shopify. We run another branded website on Shopify so it's easy to compare and contrast the two. EE is such an unknown platform that most people aren't developing integrations for it, so we're very limited in what we can even use as an add on.

**What problems is ExpressionEngine solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Using this with Carthrob to run our eCommerce website.

  ### 41. Wonderful CMS

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Marketing and Advertising | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** February 16, 2018

**What do you like best about ExpressionEngine?**

I love the versatility of the program - it allows for so many cheap plugins

**What do you dislike about ExpressionEngine?**

there are a few user-unfriendly areas that i need programming to help me with

**What problems is ExpressionEngine solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Supporting multiple client websites

  ### 42. A nice alternative CMS

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Kristen B. | Digital Content Strategist, Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** December 17, 2016

**What do you like best about ExpressionEngine?**

I have found EE to be highly extendable. We have member-specific content, discussion forums, wikis, and a ratings system (in addition to regular site content) all running on ExpressionEngine.

The support is top notch. We pay for the silver support plan ($49/mo) and it is 100% worth it. The ExpressionEngine support folks are knowledgeable and speedy with their responses. I have never actually expedited a ticket because I know I will have a reply within a few hours by filing a regular ticket.

EE 3 has a more user-friendly interface for site admins (compared to EE 2).

**What do you dislike about ExpressionEngine?**

There are so many settings that can be customized, sometimes it's difficult to remember where certain settings live. Of course, EE is well documented so it's usually easy to look up the answer (or if all else fails, file a support ticket).

**Recommendations to others considering ExpressionEngine:**

I have found EE to be a great alternative for those considering WordPress or Drupal. Take a look at all 3 and consider how customizable you want your installation to be. If you are willing to pay a little extra per month for the EE support plan, it is totally worth it, and the support techs can even help with implementation of premium add-ons, etc.

**What problems is ExpressionEngine solving and how is that benefiting you?**

We wanted something that was more secure and with better support than some of the open source options out there. EE makes it easy for us to run a membership-based site where we can control what content is visible to site members vs. guests.

  ### 43. No contest—from what I've seen and heard, it's the best.

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Aly N. | Content Strategist, Internet, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** November 17, 2016

**What do you like best about ExpressionEngine?**

Because it's the update and I have the most experience with the new version, I'm going to speak about 3.0—ultimately, it's very user-friendly. Even to people who aren't necessarily on the developer side (like me). The functionality of the program is great, the new Assets feature is wonderful (although there are a few bugs that will eventually be fixed), and it's pretty straightforward.

**What do you dislike about ExpressionEngine?**

It's sometimes difficult to find things unless you've used the program a few times (thoroughly) before. Every so often, I find myself nosing around through tabs I don't normally go to in order to try to find a space to integrate content. The Assets feature also has some kinks to work out, but overall it's a great version.

**Recommendations to others considering ExpressionEngine:**

Take a chunk of time to just mess around with it and learn it through experience—it can be a little overwhelming at first if you're not a developer, but you'll certainly catch on after using it a bit.

**What problems is ExpressionEngine solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Because I work for a web development company, it's our primary tool for building every site and it's apparently much better than what they used in the past. It's user-friendly enough that everyone can implement changes and content confidently and often without asking for help from any of the dev team.

  ### 44. ExpressionEngine - The Ultimate CMS

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Katie H. | Digital Strategist, Marketing and Advertising, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** October 19, 2016

**What do you like best about ExpressionEngine?**

I love how easy it is to use ExpressionEngine. I work for a web design agency, but had no background in web design. Our developers were able to bring me up to speed so that I can enter content, create forms, and manage SEO. I am the digital content strategist for the company and I work with the clients to help manage their content and make it appropriate for the CMS.

**What do you dislike about ExpressionEngine?**

One thing I wish could be improved upon is the user experience once it meets the client. For our team, we understand the backend of EE, but I think clients, who aren't familiar with a content management system, would appreciate a more streamlined backend process.

**Recommendations to others considering ExpressionEngine:**

If you work for a web agency, I would highly recommend considering ExpressionEngine. The community is great and they are very easy and pleasant to work with. ExpressionEngine use to use, even if you've never worked with a content management system before. Hopefully, you have a team of helpful developers around you to walk you through the process!

**What problems is ExpressionEngine solving and how is that benefiting you?**

We build all of our websites with ExpressionEngine. We have used other content management systems, but ExpressionEngine by Ellis Labs is the best we've come across.

  ### 45. Expression Engine used to be the go to for large complex cms builds.

**Rating:** 1.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Marketing and Advertising | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** June 01, 2017

**What do you like best about ExpressionEngine?**

Expression Engine has many features needed to build a complex template system based website.

**What do you dislike about ExpressionEngine?**

Expression Engine has a strange parse order and no variables in the template system.

**Recommendations to others considering ExpressionEngine:**

Try CraftCMS, it is built by the leading plugin developers for Expression Engine, and they have integrated many of the go to features and made it all work more seamlessly.

**What problems is ExpressionEngine solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Expression Engine can iterate over channel entries and produce dynamic results.

  ### 46. Executive Expression Engine Review

**Rating:** 2.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** JT O. | Executive Director, Non-Profit Organization Management, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** December 18, 2016

**What do you like best about ExpressionEngine?**

It quickly allows our staff to add or edit content to our page and is easily designed and very user-friendly.

**What do you dislike about ExpressionEngine?**

It seems a little dated compared to the abilities of over CMSs out there.

**Recommendations to others considering ExpressionEngine:**

If you need a system that is easily manageable for very complex systems and workflows of content, then definitely look into EE.

**What problems is ExpressionEngine solving and how is that benefiting you?**

We can efficiently manage our website without having to rely on an agency or web developer to make edits or updates.

  ### 47. Expression Engine

**Rating:** 2.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Em E. | Marketing Communications Manager, Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** February 14, 2017

**What do you like best about ExpressionEngine?**

Some of the areas are rather intuitive and easy to use.

**What do you dislike about ExpressionEngine?**

The version we have had to upgrade so we could see pages before they were published.

**What problems is ExpressionEngine solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Being able to navigate and update an easy to use functional website

  ### 48. Out of date, but fairly intuitive

**Rating:** 2.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Government Administration | Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** May 18, 2017

**What do you like best about ExpressionEngine?**

I'm glad to have upgraded from this platform.

**What do you dislike about ExpressionEngine?**

Short of publishing the page, the built-in pages are ill-conceived preview models. Too many tabs and hidden pages to see overall layout.

**Recommendations to others considering ExpressionEngine:**

be prepared for many many (and hidden) tabs and user interface

**What problems is ExpressionEngine solving and how is that benefiting you?**

We build our public website using EE, but have recently transferred to Word Press for smoother integration.

  ### 49. Powerful, flexible, extensible CMS for folks who have outgrown WordPress.

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Ben S. | Principal, Internet, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** April 07, 2016

**What do you like best about ExpressionEngine?**

ExpressionEngine should be evaluated from two perspectives.

DEVELOPMENT
ExpressionEngine is a design- and content-agnostic CMS. What does this mean? Unlike WordPress and some other CMS, ExpressionEngine adapts to your design rather than the reverse. It is template-drive, not theme-driven, and your templates may contain any code you want, including JavaScript, HTML, XML, JSON, etc. It is a powerful tool for developing customized websites without compromising on layout or features. Once you get comfortable with its template and content scheme, you'll be able to develop anything from a ten-page brochureware site to a 1,000 page news aggregator.

CONTENT EDITING
ExpressionEngine offers an intuitive content management experience for users. In our experience, content editors enjoy ExpressionEngine's ease of use, as long as the developer takes the time to set it up correctly.

**What do you dislike about ExpressionEngine?**

* ExpressionEngine's loyalty to its legacy codebase creates extra work for developers.
* Too much reliance on third-party add-ons to accomplish tasks that are built in to other CMS.
* Updating process is a headache.

**Recommendations to others considering ExpressionEngine:**

This CMS is best suited to higher-budget, custom websites. If you want a template-driven, somewhat generic site that just works, and/or you have a small budget, stick with WordPress or similar software.

On the other hand, if you have a solid budget, clear planning process, and professional design you'd like to implement, ExpressionEngine is a strong contender.

Unsure what's best? Hire a developer to spend a few hours walking your web or marketing team through the software, showing both the development aspects and the content editor's perspective. This is the fastest way to get a sense of ExpressionEngine's value to your business.

**What problems is ExpressionEngine solving and how is that benefiting you?**

As a branding, web design and development shop, Versa Studio has created and supported over 50 ExpressionEngine-driven sites. It's been our go-to CMS for 9 years, our key software for creating sites that support our clients' business goals.

Our clients benefit from ExpressionEngine's ability to adapt to their business goals, as expressed in design, features and content structure.

  ### 50. The primary content management system we use to develop web sites for our customers

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Internet | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** December 16, 2016

**What do you like best about ExpressionEngine?**

It is a very flexible and customizable solution

**What do you dislike about ExpressionEngine?**

Not as well known as I would like it to be

**Recommendations to others considering ExpressionEngine:**

This is an extremely versatile product and if you are tired of "cookie cutter" websites, then this is a great tool to use.

**What problems is ExpressionEngine solving and how is that benefiting you?**

providing a user friendly interface for our customers to be able to manage their content assets for their web presence.
