Especially text-based audio editing. It has been the leader of the pack on this since the beginning. This has allowed my channel to grow—while I have experience using pro audio and video software, my team does not, and Descript has allowed them to produce anything from a rough first "paper" edit to the final product. If you are making one-speaker videos, podcasts with multiple speakers, smaller-file video creations, Descript is incredible. They keep adding features that can make your final product look more professional. It was a rough start, but Descript's UX/UI is finally starting to look and feel more solid, too. For the one-person creator, it might be the only tool you need. **What do you dislike about Descript?** We have such a love/hate relationship with Descript. We have used it for 4 years, now, and it has always been buggy. Throughout the app's development, the devs will introduce a feature with bugs, then fix those bugs. The feature will work perfectly for a while, and then get broken again in a later update. I applaud the team for trying to add so many features to the app, but would much rather be able to work with a stable product, and even though we use Descript for a huge part of our workflow weekly, we always have eyes on competitors because we have never felt that we could count on the app. Customer support is just OK. They respond, but not quickly, and with the same information that can be found on the website. One thing that is particularly frustrating is its speed. Editing small files in Descript is fine, even multi-track audio. But add more than 2 speakers for a video podcast and you are going to have to be OK with editing with spinning beachballs, unsynced audio, laughably slow scubbing. I have tried everything to make the process easier and better: editing with proxies built in other apps, breaking apart longer recordings, and more. Some of these tricks work, but at that point I realize that I could get the job done much faster in Davinci Resolve or Final Cut Pro. So we use Descript for what it still does best: first draft edits. We try to never mess with creating too many Scenes, b-roll, titles or background audio. Once we have a cut, we export the timeline to another app and finish the job there. It's frustrating, and expensive! Want to add subtitles? Easy. Want to drop in an overlay, image, or presentation? Simple. And you can be up and running in mere moments, so there's very little learning curve for the basic features. The team makes improvements all the time, so the more complex workings can take time to get used to. But I recently narrated an entire audiobook for a side project using Descript and it just worked! I started out using a free version but quickly moved on to the paid version because it's so feature-rich and you get more transcription time, storage space, and exports without the watermark. I'm sure I'm not even using everything I could be and I use it almost every day! **What do you dislike about Descript?** The frequent updates are a necessity for constant improvements, but when you're on a company computer that requires admin access for updates, it causes annoyances. We've resolved that by installing the app in my user folder, but making updates deployable by a centralized IT for enterprize folks, even when we have a smaller license, would be more ideal. **What problems is Descript solving and how is that benefiting you?** I record a lot of video and then produce transcripts, and Descript produces way more accurate transcripts than the built-in capture from video meeting solutions. The whole application just freezes if I scroll too fast and it this slows me down, especially when I'm in a pinch for time. I have to wait on the app to catch up or hope it doesn't crash. Also, I've never quite understood what some of the functions do. It's not as immediately obvious as I wish it were. The feature I first give thanks to is having the ability to remove filler words, "I usually have 300+ that Descript removes for me." This saves me time and MOST IMPORTANTLY cognitive battery. At the press of a button the convenience of implementing this feature is seamless. While no longer specific to Descript, the ability to edit the text and it edit als the audio is incredible. Even after Adobe added it to its suite I still choose to pay for Descript due to the user interface. From the beginning it was quick and easy integration into my workflow. I believe I watched 2 or 3 youtube videos and off to the races I was. I currently use it for 3-5 projects a month, so I have become well acquianted with the version history feature as well that I truly appreciate that I dont have to save anything and can have peace that it automatically registers my changes. Anytime I have had credits that need to be applied or had questions Descript customer support has been very kind and articulate. **What do you dislike about Descript?** The new ai implementation is improving fast but yet to be able to handle more complex asks. For some reason every time I open the app it always says there is a new update even after I update it and open it back up, the notification arises once more. Lastly the speaker identification could use some attention. I've even used it for personal use like where we had a medical consultation I recorded that I wanted to refrence later and then putting it into descript allowed me to search it easily through the transcript vs. having to scroll through the recording. Overall very easy to use. **What do you dislike about Descript?** It's often annoying to find menu items that aren't in the main dashboard or pop up in the wizard. Like sometimes I'll miss or misclick the 'number of speakers' and it always feels like a mission to have to go find it in the menu. What took me almost an hour on average to do my basic edit, with Descript, that same basic edit is done with underlord in minutes. So the biggest ROI here is my time. **What do you dislike about Descript?** As someone who is new to the app, my 'dislike' is that there are so many features that it can easily become overwhelming. With the podcast, Descript allows me to write a script that I can read from - and with eye contact - the finished product does not look like I'm reading from a script. Being able to edit based on words in the transcript is amazing. I'm not comfortable (yet) handing off my crazy videos to someone to edit out my uhms/ahs or misspoken parts. It's so easy for me to listen and edit every podcast video. Then, I add captions and identify short promo clips before exporting. Outside of my podcast, I use it to help me with social media posts I create. I can easily splice and add text to my videos that enhance my posts. **What do you dislike about Descript?** The only thing negative I have is sometimes words do not get transcribed correctly. I'm not sure if it that I did not speak clear enough or if there was a glitch in the matrix at that point in time. It's not a huge deal. The impact is that it takes me slightly longer to edit as I either need to type the words (for correct captions) or navigate slowly to grab the correct section to delete. One last small request would be having a way to add words to a dictionary similar to spell check. My name is always misspelled in the transcript and when I mention a URL, I have to edit the transcript to reflect "@" instead of "at" and "xyz.com" vs "xyz. Com". Just a small frustration that I have to edit those same things on nearly every video I edit. Neither of these things would make me stop using Descript. Rarely do I need to go into the timeline to make a more manual edit, but if I do, editing the sequence of combined video and audio is a breeze. The scene templates also make it faster to get my video out the door, while creating my own scenes based on those templates is fast. Since restarting my YouTube channel, I've been using Descript nearly everyday to create shorts and longer content videos. I don't have to rely on a team or pro video editor, which can get expensive and time consuming. Finally, the new Underlord AI editing tool allows me to make otherwise super tedious edits with a few clicks instead of painstakingly scrubbing through the timeline like I used to have to do with Screenflow or Adobe. Removing umms, ahhs, and extended pauses is really fast. And if it gets overzealous on its cuts, I can quickly "restore removed media" to fix particular phrases in the video. My experience with customer support has been minimal, but the onboarding emails and UX of the browser and desktop apps had me up and running quickly. **What do you dislike about Descript?** I'd like to have a more obvious area of library files to load into the dashboard instead of only including them within a project. The transription feature generally works about as well as anyone else's. **What do you dislike about Descript?** Although I have a VERY fast computer (Core i9, 80GB ram, 4TB M.2 SSD, RTX 4080 Super), and a 500MB u/d fiber internet connection, much of the functionality takes (what seems like) an inordinately long time to process. It took 1.5 minutes to process the breen screen (background removal) effect on a 45 second clip, and it ended up removing my mic in front of my and my right shoulder, in addition to the background. I'm sure that all/most of the functionality is being handed off to their servers for processing, so it would be good if a user could choose between client side or server side processing and see which works best for them. Also, the editor is a bit clunky/touchy/finicky to use sometimes.
