**What do you like best about BMC AMI DevX?**

What stands out most about BMC AMI DevX is how effectively it bridges modern DevOps practices with legacy mainframe environments. Moving away from standard ISPF/green-screen navigation to an IDE-based setup has drastically streamlined our day-to-day coding. The source-level debugging, automated test generation, and deep impact analysis allow us to immediately see execution paths and data flows across interconnected modules. In addition, its automated build and deployment pipelines make version control and release management far less error-prone when handling large multi-component rollouts.

**What do you dislike about BMC AMI DevX?**

Initial setup and environment provisioning can be cumbersome, especially when establishing secure host communications and aligning release automation with complex mainframe repository structures. There is a noticeable learning curve for developers transitioning from native ISPF workflows to plugin-based IDE debugging, and documentation for troubleshooting automated test execution failures in pipeline builds could be clearer. Furthermore, performance can occasionally dip during heavy code analysis and dependency tracing on very large monolithic applications.

**What problems is BMC AMI DevX solving and how is that benefiting you?**

It primarily solves the massive bottleneck of legacy mainframe development by bringing it into the modern DevOps ecosystem. Instead of wrestling with traditional ISPF green screens, I can work within a modern IDE to visually step through complex COBOL or PL/I applications. This drastically cuts down the time it takes to trace data flows, understand undocumented legacy logic, and resolve production incidents. Furthermore, it bridges the gap between our mainframe assets and our standard CI/CD pipelines, allowing us to manage and deploy code much faster and with significantly less risk.

**What do you like best about BMC AMI DevX?**

The BMC AMI DevX tool was employed in our team when performing maintenance and test operations associated with mainframe applications. I had the opportunity to use BMC AMI DevX primarily when analyzing the outcome of batch processing, program behavior after code changes, and when looking into failures in processing jobs prior to deploying any changes into production processes.

In my opinion, the main benefit of using this software is that it allows for an easy debugging process rather than having to depend on green-screen tools only. The ability to analyze the flow of execution, job output, and program details all in one place definitely helped save time.

**What do you dislike about BMC AMI DevX?**

There is still a need for an in-depth understanding of the mainframe process, hence requiring time for newer team members to get used to navigating through the process seamlessly.

What I observed is that problem-solving gets difficult in environments where multiple batches and applications have interconnected dependencies. In such cases, finding out the root cause of the problem remains a daunting task despite advancements in tools.

**What problems is BMC AMI DevX solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Earlier, debugging and analysis processes had required switching between multiple tools of previous versions, while having to examine execution details manually.

With BMC AMI DevX, most of the troubleshooting and testing process became consolidated in an efficient way. As a result, troubleshooting for job failures was simplified, testing operations were better visualized, and overall management of application maintenance processes became simpler.

**Reviewed Date:** August 19, 2026

**What do you like best about BMC AMI DevX?**

BMC AMI DevX is BMC’s modern IDE and debugging suite for mainframe developers. It’s designed to make z/OS, COBOL, PL/I, and CICS development feel less like 1980 and more like working in VS Code.

**What do you dislike about BMC AMI DevX?**

It’s a modern IDE sitting on top of a 50-year-old system, so you still need deep mainframe knowledge for it to work well. New developers assume “VS Code = easy,” but then they run into LPARs, datasets, and security configurations and end up getting stuck.

**What problems is BMC AMI DevX solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Problem: Many new developers aren’t familiar with ISPF, JCL, or COBOL debugging, and at the same time a lot of senior developers are retiring.

Solution: DevX brings an Eclipse/VS Code-style experience to z/OS, which helps new grads onboard faster.

  ### 12. Powerful Debugging with Key Integration but Needs Smoother Usability

**What do you like best about BMC AMI DevX?**

I really like the VSCode integration with BMC AMI DevX because it allows me to use a single IDE that has tons of features, which is convenient for all my dev tools and connections. The ISPW feature is great too, especially its dependency mapping, which shows what's impacted and helps me avoid making guesses that could lead to issues. I love Xpediter as it allows me to watch data move through variables and see how logic responds, which is a massive relief when working with mainframe code.

**What do you dislike about BMC AMI DevX?**

It's a click-heavy tool, even setting up filters or submitting a job is cumbersome. Upgrading versions requires manually exporting everything, including importing filters, which is a real pain. The errors are not understandable, just showing abstract Java exception codes and mainframe errors, leading to hours spent on outdated documentation. The documentation is poor, and it often creates a high learning curve, especially for new generations who struggle with it. The initial setup isn't simple; translating custom routines into JCL skeletons and dealing with vague client-side logs takes time, requiring help from senior mainframe developers.

**What problems is BMC AMI DevX solving and how is that benefiting you?**

I use BMC AMI DevX to debug code without confusion, read complex mainframe files, and manage pipelines. It saves me from trouble with mainframe file issues and batch job crashes, streamlining my workflow by tracking dependencies and pushing changes.

**What do you like best about BMC AMI DevX?**

The integration of BMC AMI DevX Workbench into VS Code has completely changed my morning routine. Instead of opening multiple TSO/ISPF green screens to track down an application crash, I can use Abend-AID directly inside my IDE. The “test-data-creation assistance” feature within the abend report saves me hours every week.

It captures the exact variable states at the moment of the crash and, with just a few clicks, carries them into my test environment. That means I no longer spend half my day manually staging test data just to reproduce a production bug.

**What do you dislike about BMC AMI DevX?**

While the integration into modern IDEs is a massive step forward, you can still feel the seams where separate legacy tools were stitched together. Moving between File-AID for data manipulation, Xpediter for debugging, and Code Pipeline for versioning sometimes feels like navigating completely different applications under a shared coat of paint.
The interface requires way too many clicks just to set up basic dataset filters or submit standard jobs. Furthermore, session management is a constant annoyance.

**What problems is BMC AMI DevX solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Instead of spending three days tracking down a senior architect to explain how a 40-year-old monolithic account-processing program works, I can use the Code Insights tool to view an instantaneous, visual map of the program’s execution paths. It shaves my onboarding and feature analysis time from days down to a few minutes, making me feel secure altering code I didn't write.

**What do you like best about BMC AMI DevX?**

1. The standalone best feature is the Code Pipeline CI/CD integration. It completely modernizes mainframe deployments by allowing us to manage concurrent code check-outs and track program states smoothly.
2. It bridges the gap between traditional legacy mainframes and modern engineering environments. Moving to IDEs like VS Code makes a massive difference.
3. The combination of Total Test for automated regression testing and the built-in AI code insights provides immense value.

**What do you dislike about BMC AMI DevX?**

1. Some of the underlying components still feel a bit disconnected. Because the platform combines multiple acquired tools (like File-AID and Abend-AID), the user interface across different modules can occasionally feel inconsistent.
2. The initial setup and configuration can be quite complex. For example, integrating the platform seamlessly with existing enterprise toolchains and third-party CI/CD utilities (such as Jenkins or Git pipelines)
3. Navigating the extensive product documentation to resolve niche technical issues can sometimes be challenging.

**What problems is BMC AMI DevX solving and how is that benefiting you?**

1. Before adopting this platform, onboarding newer developers onto legacy mainframe systems was incredibly difficult due to the steep learning curve of traditional green screens (ISPF). BMC AMI DevX solves this by bringing mainframe development into modern IDEs like VS Code.
2. We previously struggled with slow, high-risk application deployment cycles and manual code promotions that often risked breaking legacy systems. This software helps us solve that bottleneck by integrating mainframe code directly into our automated CI/CD pipelines.
3. We can quickly isolate code execution errors and mask test data securely. We no longer waste hours waiting for mainframe test environments to be prepared.

**Reviewed Date:** January 08, 2026

**What do you like best about BMC AMI DevX?**

I like the industry benchmarking feature in BMC Compuware zAdviser. It's probably the coolest part because not only does it show our data, but it also lets us compare our performance against other organizations using the tool. It's really helpful as it gives us a performance tier ranking—'High, Medium, or Low,' which is super useful for reporting to executives. I also appreciate the 'Shift-Left' quality insights, particularly the Escaped Abend Ratio. It tracks crashes that happen in production versus those caught in testing, and seeing this metric drop over time proves our modernization efforts like automated testing are actually working.

**What do you dislike about BMC AMI DevX?**

BMC Compuware zAdviser is most effective when you're using the full BMC AMI DevX suite. If you use a mix of vendors, zAdviser can feel 'blind' to those activities. It would be better with more robust 'plug-and-play' connectors for non-BMC tools to make it a true universal DevOps dashboard. Also, while the standard dashboards are great out of the box, tailoring them to unique organizational structures can be difficult. Limited customization and a steep learning curve make it hard to create highly specific views without deep technical knowledge of the underlying data schemas.

**What problems is BMC AMI DevX solving and how is that benefiting you?**

BMC Compuware zAdviser helps shift from 'gut feelings' to data-backed decisions, pinpointing where code stalls in the lifecycle and replacing guesses with accurate DORA Metrics like Deployment Frequency and Change Failure Rate.

**What do you like best about BMC AMI DevX?**

Topaz has been particularly useful to us regarding testing on mainframes. The environment virtualization that the unit testing affords to brokers is the greatest since it offers good isolation and control hence encompassing facilitation of debugging.

**What do you dislike about BMC AMI DevX?**

Topaz does not include features for integrating tests into our mobile CI/CD applications. This actually means that it needs additional tools and workarounds to be accomplished and this slows down the flow of the testing process.

**What problems is BMC AMI DevX solving and how is that benefiting you?**

With Topaz, we feel that the quality and efficiency of our mainframe testing has greatly enhanced. Thus, automated testing of different types helps to identify issues in the development cycle and prevent defects to be released into production.
