"Modernizes Mainframe Dev with Familiar IDEs, AI Code Intelligence, and Streamlined CI/CD"
4/5
What do you like best about BMC AMI DevX?

I appreciate BMC AMI DevX most for how it modernizes mainframe development, replacing traditional green screens with familiar IDEs like VS Code and Eclipse. The modern interface swaps out legacy navigation for environments developers already know, which lowers the barrier to entry for newer team members. I also value the AI and code intelligence features: generative AI tools and runtime visualizers help make complex COBOL, PL/I, and JCL easier to understand by explaining what’s happening in plain English. On the delivery side, the CI/CD experience feels more streamlined because it integrates smoothly with Git and automated workflows, which helps improve deployment frequency and overall efficiency. Finally, debugging and testing are more effective, with simpler fault diagnostics, better support for test data management, and automated testing that reduces manual effort. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about BMC AMI DevX?

It’s worth noting that BMC AMI DevX comes with a steep learning curve, especially for developers who are new to mainframe environments. Common dislikes and drawbacks include the initial adjustment period for new developers or anyone unfamiliar with legacy tool integrations and mainframe systems. Integrations can also be complex; connecting the platform with non-BMC tools or certain third-party CI/CD setups may be complicated and challenging. In addition, there are documentation gaps in some advanced configuration scenarios, which can leave you relying on extra support to move forward. Heavy resource consumption may occur during large-scale code analysis or more intensive testing processes. Finally, some real users have reported occasional stability issues around upgrades, along with UI/UX elements that still feel a bit legacy. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

"Modernizes Mainframe Development with Seamless IDE Workflows and CI/CD"
4/5
What do you like best about BMC AMI DevX?

What I like most about BMC AMI DevX is how effectively it modernizes legacy mainframe development across the key operational areas that matter day to day.

UI/UX & Workflows: By replacing traditional 3270 green-screen interfaces with modern IDEs like VS Code and Eclipse, it makes routine work feel far more streamlined. Features such as graphical program structure charts, data-flow visualizers, and interactive debugging reduce constant context switching and help me stay focused.

AI & Intelligence: The integrated GenAI capabilities (BMC AMI Assistant) provide instant, plain-English code explanations, which makes complex COBOL and JCL logic much easier to understand without having to dig through outdated documentation.

Integrations & DevOps: Seamless connections with Git, Jenkins, and automated CI/CD pipelines help bring mainframe release management into alignment with broader enterprise DevOps standards.

Support & Onboarding: It noticeably lowers onboarding friction for developers without prior mainframe experience, so new team members can start contributing sooner.

Performance & ROI: Automated testing via Total Test improves release velocity and reduces regression issues. Over time, that translates into strong ROI by cutting legacy maintenance overhead and accelerating time-to-market. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about BMC AMI DevX?

The initial learning curve can be fairly steep for new team members because of the wide range of capabilities across debugging, analysis, and testing. Although bringing this functionality into VS Code and Eclipse is a major improvement over green screens, the interface can sometimes feel busy, which makes advanced features harder to find and use without dedicated training.

From a performance standpoint, initial workspace indexing and heavy data extractions (e.g., via File-AID) can occasionally cause latency when parsing large COBOL or JCL codebases over remote connections. Regarding pricing and ROI, the high enterprise licensing tier requires deep organization-wide adoption across the entire pipeline before realizing a strong return on investment. Finally, while AI and intelligence tools like BMC AMI Assistant offer useful plain-English code explanations, deeper generative features like automated refactoring and predictive test generation still feel early-stage and need further tuning for customized legacy setups. What do you dislike about BMC AMI DevX?

There are several disadvantages in BMC AMI DevX which I do not like. Sometimes I have an impression that some of the functions are quite complicated to comprehend. Moreover, there is the lack of intuitiveness of the interface and it may be rather hard for developers unfamiliar with mainframe environments to use it. Sometimes I find performance rather poor. "Features are strong but need UI improvement"
3/5
What do you like best about BMC AMI DevX?

I like BMC AMI DevX's Genei code explanation feature the most. It is built into a very intelligent layer that allows developers to get an instant plain English explanation of what their code executes. These explanations can be automatically saved as comments inside the program, which is a very helpful feature. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about BMC AMI DevX?

The setup of BMC AMI DevX is very complex and fragmented UI, which can improve the user experience. It feels like several different software pieces are put together, like code pipelines and home workbench. Integration remains a bit difficult. There is a lack of easy availability of initial documentation pieces to connect CICD pipelines to the app repository. We need deeper technical documentation. Developers faced problems due to the lack of documentation during the initial setup, and it needs improvement. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

"Bridging Mainframe & Modern DevOps Seamlessly"
4.5/5
What do you like best about BMC AMI DevX?

I like that BMC AMI DevX makes mainframe development really easy for modern engineering teams, thanks to the Visual Studio Code plug-in. It simplifies mainframe development, making it accessible for newer software engineers. The artificial intelligence code understanding feature is fantastic; it breaks down complex legacy COBOL code into plain English. I also appreciate the Workbench for Visual Studio Code combined with code insights—it provides a modern editor experience, allowing developers to write and edit COBOL directly in Visual Studio Code. This makes it so much more convenient than traditional green screen terminals. Additionally, the automated testing and Git integration through BMC AMI DevX Total Test are incredibly valuable. Automated unit tests can run directly in the development pipeline, saving time and preventing mainframe downtime. The Git-based source control is a huge improvement, replacing the legacy library manager and allowing developers to use familiar workflows across both mainframe and applications. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about BMC AMI DevX?

I find the steep learning curve to be a significant challenge, especially when setting up and configuring hybrid continuous integration and continuous development systems. It can be difficult at first to get everything up and running smoothly. Additionally, aligning the workflow with old mainframe rules and limitations while integrating with modern source control workflows takes a lot of time and effort.
