Their support, including "Ruby J.", only sends canned, automated responses and ignores the fact that they are essentially seizing my company's funds. It feels like a "bait-and-switch" scheme: verify the user, take their money, and then terminate the service within 24 hours without a refund. My goal was to use their high-performance VPS instances to run Dokploy, allowing for efficient container orchestration and rapid deployment of our microservices. The platform’s global data center locations and competitive price-to-performance ratio were supposed to help us maintain low latency for our users while keeping infrastructure costs manageable during the MVP stage. Unfortunately, instead of solving these technical problems, Vultr created a major business hurdle by seizing my $100 deposit and terminating the account immediately after a successful document verification, leaving our deployment plans in limbo. ### 2. I can hand the dashboard to a junior engineer, and they can have a global load balancer configured in ten minutes without needing a certification. Global Footprint: With 32+ locations, we’ve been able to deploy our services physically closer to our clients in London, Tokyo, and Sydney, all through one unified, simple interface. Pricing / ROI: No More “Bill Shock” The biggest win for our bottom line has been predictability. The Problem: In the past, our monthly cloud bill felt like a guessing game because of complex “egress” and “API request” fees. The Solution: Vultr’s flat pricing model is transparent. We now save roughly 40% monthly compared to our previous hyperscaler setup. The ROI isn’t only in the lower price point; it’s also in the hours our finance team saves by not having to audit a 50-page invoice every month. The Reality: This is a self-service platform. During onboarding, I realized there’s no “account manager” to call, and support is strictly ticket-based. The Risk: Their technical team is knowledgeable, but the lack of immediate phone support means our own team has to be the first line of defense. If you don’t have a solid internal technical lead, the onboarding process may feel a bit “sink or swim.” **What do you dislike about Vultr?** 1. The “Guilty by Association” Risk (Account Linking) This is probably my biggest gripe when doing agency work: Vultr’s fraud detection feels incredibly aggressive. The problem is that if you’re invited to manage a client’s account and that client later has a payment failure or a TOS violation, Vultr’s automated systems can end up flagging every account linked to that user. My concern is that I’ve seen situations where a consultant’s personal account was suspended simply because one of their clients’ credit cards expired. It comes across as a “scorched earth” approach to security, and it can put our entire operation at risk because of a third party’s mistake. 2. Rigid “Ticket-Only” Support When you’re running a mission-critical B2B service, live chat or a phone number isn’t a luxury—it’s a necessity. The reality is that Vultr sticks strictly to an email-based ticketing system. They’re usually responsive (often within 1–2 hours), but it still lacks the immediacy you need during a production emergency. There’s also a “script” issue: the first response can sometimes read like a canned template. With complex networking problems, it may take two or three back-and-forth exchanges before you finally reach a senior engineer who truly understands what’s going on. 3. Throttling for “Noisy” Workloads Vultr is a shared environment (unless you pay for Bare Metal), and they seem very protective of their host nodes. The issue is that if one of our instances sits at 100% CPU for an extended period—during a heavy data migration, for example, or because of an unoptimized script—Vultr’s automated systems may throttle performance or even suspend the instance to “protect” other users on the same hardware. For a business, the impact is that it can feel like you’re being punished for using the resources you’re paying for. 4. No Refunds on Credit Balances Their billing system feels like a “one-way street” when it comes to cash. What I dislike is that if you deposit $500 into your account and then decide to move the project elsewhere, that money is effectively gone. Vultr generally does not offer refunds on “Account Credit.” It’s an old-school policy that feels a bit “anti-consumer” in an era where flexible cloud billing is the norm. 5. Lack of “Managed” Guardrails Vultr provides the “raw metal,” but offers almost no help with securing it. The reality is that, unlike managed providers, Vultr won’t warn you if your firewall is misconfigured or if your OS is out of date. If you get hacked due to a simple oversight, the solution is often just to null-route your IP (take you offline) until you fix it yourself. For a small business without a dedicated sysadmin, that’s a lot of weight to carry. **What problems is Vultr solving and how is that benefiting you?** 1. The “Opacity” Problem (Pricing) The Problem: With AWS or Azure, our monthly bill was a 50-page document packed with “micro-charges” for every API request, data transfer, and IP address. That level of granularity made it nearly impossible to budget confidently for the next quarter. How Vultr Solves It: Vultr uses a flat, predictable billing model with clearly defined monthly caps. The Benefit to Us: Financial predictability. I can tell our CFO exactly what our infrastructure will cost six months from now. We’ve eliminated “bill shock” and saved our finance team roughly 10 hours a month that used to go toward invoice auditing. 2. The “GPU Scarcity” Problem (AI Scaling) The Problem: As we integrated AI into our workflow, we found that getting on-demand access to high-end GPUs like the NVIDIA H100 or B200 on major clouds often required massive “reserved instance” commitments or six-figure upfront deposits. The “Latency” Problem (Global Expansion) The Problem: We have clients in emerging markets like South Africa and parts of South America where the “Big Three” clouds often have limited presence or extremely high “regional” pricing. How Vultr Solves It: They have 32+ global data centers in strategic locations that others often ignore. The Benefit to Us: Global parity. We can deploy an instance in Johannesburg or Osaka just as easily as New York. That helps ensure our global users get the same “instant” feel, regardless of where they’re logging in from. 5. The “Complexity Tax” (Management) The Problem: Major clouds have become so complex that you practically need a “Certification” just to open a firewall port. How Vultr Solves It: They provide a 60-second deployment UI and a “flat” management console. The Benefit to Us: Reduced talent costs. I don’t need to hire a $150k/year “Cloud Architect” just to manage our servers. Our existing developers can handle the infrastructure themselves through Vultr’s clean API and Terraform integrations, keeping our team lean and focused on our product. ### 3. Wasted significant time and money discovering all servers route through external ISPs instead of direct AWS peering. **What problems is Vultr solving and how is that benefiting you?** Vultr aims to solve fast bare metal and cloud deployment globally with API-first approach. The provisioning speed is genuinely good - servers ready in minutes, not hours. However, for my use case (low-latency trading infrastructure in Tokyo), Vultr did NOT solve the problem. I needed sub-millisecond latency to AWS Tokyo. Support demonstrated 0.14ms from their TY6 facility, but all my deployments landed in TY11 with 2.7-4ms latency. Benefit realized: None. Ended up staying with AWS EC2 which provides 1.2-1.7ms - better than what Vultr could deliver despite costing less. Vultr may work well for general hosting, but for latency-critical applications in Tokyo, the inability to select datacenter location makes it unsuitable. ### 4. I can spin up really small servers that could cost as low as $5 a month or even $2.5 for tiny servers. This is great when I have a bit of work or testing to do for software. I can test it and then destroy the server after that. They also have a variety of images like Ubuntu, LAMP stack, or OpenVPN, which are ready to go. I just select it at the time of creating the server, click create, enter some SSH keys, and it’s good to go. The server is ready with the selected image in no time and it’s fantastic. Vultr gives pre-installed software if you choose, which saves a lot of time compared to a clean install from other providers. **What do you dislike about Vultr?** I think one aspect that I don't like about Vultr is that after spinning up the server, the initial wait time is a bit longer, I feel. It suspends numerous functions, to the point of not being able to configure your API key(s) or even look at the Load Balancer UI. The bad part is that you CANNOT get this resolved in a weekend, since support works normal operating hours which is not compatible with weekend 36-hour hackathons. To host WordPress and Mautic servers its like a dream. But nowadays I have VPNs (in different countries) , virtual servers (think Linkedin outreach) and different servers for different purposes. I actually remember a few years ago spinning up a server to play Minecraft with my brother for a day. I love how easy they make to create servers. Its user interface is quite good, and it supports modern technologies on it's management portal, such as Fido U2F second factor authentication. They have a huge variety of cloud compute options available to suit most needs, and the cloud compute plans are highly customizable. I'd like to note that they offer two distributions of BSD and at least one Windows option in addition to the standard Linux-based cloud compute OSes. **What do you dislike about Vultr?** The pricing structure for cloud compute is a bit opaque. Different tiers are only available at certain data center locations, and some only work with certain distributions of the OSes they offer. In practice, this means that I am quite often trying every combination of data center locations [within the US since I am US-based] and OS options (except for the Windows options) to find the one that best matches my needs for the price I would like to pay. Compared to competing IaaS provider, Linode, their equivalent tier hardware is not priced as comptetitively. However, I would be willing to pay relatively more for the cloud compute plans if it allows me to cut costs by using less hardware resources as long as the Operating Systems offered for those plans are viable for my needs. For me, Vultr is only a solution for some of my IaaS needs rather than all of them. **What problems is Vultr solving and how is that benefiting you?** I primarily use services like Vultr for security. Instead of investing in costly security measures for my own network and servers, I can rely on the security measures provided by a large-scale IaaS provider. It also allows me to operate at the most optimal scale. For example, I point domains to the VPS IP address rather than my on-premesis server's IP address. The VPS then uses an Nginx reverse proxy to forward that request over a Wireguard tunnel to my server hardware. The offloads the risks and costs associated with opening Firewall ports on my internal network to the IaaS provider. It provides me with ultimate flexibility for choosing the most opitmal hardware at the greatest ROI. I need lots of RAM, but not lots of CPU compute and even less GPU compute. ### 21. Vultr will not deliver all the functions you may find in the "big names" like AWS or Google, but for the majority of the users, looking for a cloud hosting service provider, that's a good thing. The majority of the users won't use those services anyway, and with Vultr you can keep the power, for less money and with a straight list of services that may be useful for the majority of the cases. So, what I like the most about Vultr is the ability to set up a server in a couple minutes, with easy to implement solutions already combined if you want, without giving up in the resources departmenet. **What do you dislike about Vultr?** As much as I appreciate their dedication in staying as independent as possible, and that strategy may payoff in the long term (or not), for now, it may be the reason it's possible to find a little cheaper providers with similar offers. Availability worldwide is good (saving me having to learn different systems), signup was quick (unlike one otherwise good provider where the signup took days because "we don't work weekends"), and it's possible to add extra administrators (unlike my old provider who forced me to share my password and turn off 2FA). Features are generally good - I particularly wanted to be able to boot from an ISO image so I could set up full-disk encryption, and I wanted to be able to reboot the server and enter the encryption password via the console from a phone, which is suprisingly hard to do with almost all other providers. It's nice to know DDoS protection is available if I need it - I had to leave a previous host because of a DDoS attack. Pricing is competitive, backups and extra storage options are better than most, though with room for improvement. **What do you dislike about Vultr?** The biggest downside for me is that outgoing mail on port 25 is completely blocked (even after raising a support ticket and waiting several days). It's not too hard to send mail through a third party instead and that works well, but why should I have to go to all that trouble? At least incoming mail is still allowed, unlike some competitors. The size options are fairly rigid and it's not possible to simply add a bit of extra disk capacity, for example. Extra "block storage" can be attached but it's a hassle getting it mounted and encrypted and the help is not good. Again, why should I have to go to all that trouble? I find the pricing structure confusing. In principle I like the cloud approach where you pay only for the resources you actually need - in practice though, it's very hard to predict what the next bill will be, and I need more certainty than that. They're generous with credit to allow you to find out how much you will actually use and that's appreciated, but it only lasts for a month. I'd hoped to be able to take a snapshot backup of the whole server (perhaps as an ISO) and store it off-site to help with setting up new instances quickly or transferring to a new host, but I accept that it's not really possible unless you're restoring to identical hardware so I've had to give up on that. **What problems is Vultr solving and how is that benefiting you?** Supplying network connectivity, reliable power and physical security that would be harder or more expensive to achieve locally. ### 25. Vultr do their part to dissuade abuse of their services by bad actors through the use of credit deposit and that, combined with checks by local banks on foreign transactions, can result in the need to reauthorise payments. But in the end, that's all good for fraud prevention. **What problems is Vultr solving and how is that benefiting you?** I use Vultr's VPS offering to provide a remote email relay for my Internet domain. The static IP address and configurable Reverse DNS hostname are essential to maintaining my domain's reputation using SPF and DMARC records which rely on these features. ### 40. Price wise they are also the cheapest and yet they provide high quality products which helped me to help businesses succeed for years. Automation is also possible and the bariety of products and locations are matching and better than the other cloud infrastructure providers. Customer service is excellent. **What do you dislike about Vultr?** Dollar invoicing. I would appreciate eurobased invpicing but I can live with that. **What problems is Vultr solving and how is that benefiting you?** Starting VPSes for proof of concepts is easy, saving snapshots for reusing is also easy. ### 42. Customer support replies super quick and are super helpful, so nothing to complain there. **What do you dislike about Vultr?** The UX could be improved as first time it takes a while until you get to understand where verything is, however saying that integration is still super easy. **What problems is Vultr solving and how is that benefiting you?** If i need a solution for a new project and we're not sure if we should commit to a 1 or 2 year contract (like with most old-school server providers), if i need a super fast or just a basic server or if i need a server in a specific location Vultr is coming very handy ### 43. Lots and lots of connectivity; we are able to deploy nodes to wherever we need them for very low latency at client sites. Responsive support, even on weekends. **What do you dislike about Vultr?** SMTP port blocked by default. There is a process to unblock, but it requires a lot of steps. This is possibly the easiest cloud service provider I've ever used! I've managed to create a virtual private network, deploy a few cloud servers, provide myself reasonable security, all with very little assistance needed from support, but I know if I do need it they are available! **What do you dislike about Vultr?** Not much. I mean everyone would like to pay less, right? But even then the prices are great anyway! **What problems is Vultr solving and how is that benefiting you?** I needed to deploy a private development repository that is not explicitly exposed to the web, the requirement being a VPN that would log into an internal-only network, however I do not personally have the infrastructure to do this. The virtual servers and virtual private networks that Vultr allows for configurations allowed me to do this quickly and effectively, I was even able to do this utilizing nothing but open source software, some of which the marketplace at Vultr just auto-installs for you! ### 48. As a full-stack programmer (Ruby-On-Rails, Postgresql/MySQL, Elasticsearch, NodeJs, Redis-backed libraries for creating background jobs) I developed more than 30 full-scale storefronts.
