What do you dislike about Maptitude?

We have aptitude installed on our desktops and when one of our cartographers travels, they have to shut down the desktop application and activate the same license on their laptop. There was a time when map that you did allow installation of the same license on a backup computer

What problems is Maptitude solving and how is that benefiting you?

We use Maptitude for regulatory compliance applications for financial institutions. Under the federal banking, regulations banks must declare their “assessment areas“. This is a very critical decision to be made by the bank.

Any change in the configuration of an assessment area will have a profound effect on the banks results as well as the benchmarks used by regulators. Maptitude allows real time evaluation of many different potential configurations. In seconds, we can compute results of many different alternatives and determine the best fit for our clients.

The computational capabilities are impressive Visualize the different configurations really blows bankers away. We don’t know of another software capable of such sophistication. I can’t overstate how important and impressive this Application is Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

"Top Quality Spatial Analysis Software! Can't find anything similar at the price."

What do you like best about Maptitude?

I've been using Maptitude since 1998. Started with it in professional practice and kept using it through my academic career. I've worked with it across the USA, Australia, UK, UAE, and now the South Pacific. It's honestly one of the best GIS tools I've come across, especially for how easy it is to actually use.

What really makes it valuable is the data you get. Roads, waterways, buildings, business locations, and in many countries you get geodemographic segmentation plus population estimates and forecasts down to really small areas. That level of detail matters when you're doing serious analysis rather than just looking at broad country or state level patterns. Even when I'm working in remote Pacific islands where local datasets are sparse, I can pull in shapefiles from OpenStreetMap and still build solid models.

The software keeps getting better too. Back in 2014 I made a YouTube video showing how to create a Huff retail gravity model. It was workable but slow, and you had to finish parts of it in Excel. By 2020 they'd added the Huff Model as a standard feature. That kind of response to what users actually need is why I've stuck with Caliper.

I use it heavily in teaching. At universities in Australia, the UK, and now here in the UAE, I start students on Maptitude from first year. Within three lab sessions they're running market analyses. Rings, Voronoi diagrams, Huff models, the works. I've supervised Master's students doing proper research projects with it, including one that ended up published in a peer reviewed journal.

After nearly 30 years, I still think it's a 10/10. The combination of being intuitive enough for beginners but powerful enough for advanced work is rare. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about Maptitude?

Maptitude is an excellent platform, but there are still a few areas where more development would add a lot of value. One is integration with Python. Right now, Python can be used alongside Maptitude, but there is no direct way to run advanced spatial econometric models inside the software. Spatial autoregression models, for instance, still have to be run in R, Stata, or PySAL. A tighter link with Python would let users combine Maptitude’s mapping strengths with Python’s analytical tools in a single workflow.

Another area is the automation of spatial analysis. Maptitude already makes complex tasks much more accessible, but many analyses still need quite a bit of manual setup. More automated workflows for common spatial techniques would speed things up and make the software easier to use, especially for students and professionals who need reliable results quickly.

Finally, there is a lot of potential in future AI capabilities. It will be interesting to see how Caliper brings AI into Maptitude, whether through intelligent automation, better pattern detection, or predictive modelling. Those kinds of tools could open up new options for market analysis, scenario testing, and decision support, and would push the software beyond traditional GIS use. Recommendations to others considering Maptitude:

Unless you are large company creating GIS shapefile such as utilities, government land departments, etc, and you are predominately a 'user', Maptitude is a very simple easy, but powerful GIS software. I previously worked in a government agency where we had one full time GIS person who used ArcGis. But I could create better and faster maps within Maptitude, and sadly, the GIS person was let go as agency did Maptitude training for all project coordinators and project managers who could then easily do their own maps. Saved agency one full time salary staff, saved time for others, and saved substantial money in software. For most GIS / spatial analysis functions, you don't need the over built ArcGis that requires a degree to operate. Maptitude allows the 'user' to create their maps of their data. What problems is Maptitude solving and how is that benefiting you?

Maptitude has been central to my work in the real estate and property industry for many years. I use it for trade area analysis, site selection, and producing clear, professional maps for client and academic reports. The built‑in trade area tools are especially useful, with options like simple radius rings and drive‑time polygons that make it easy to test different catchment assumptions.

With a bit more skill, it is straightforward to build full retail gravity (Huff model) trade areas and weight them by different factors such as store size or attractiveness. That flexibility has been very helpful when working on real-world retail projects where simple radius analysis is not enough. I have also taught spatial analysis to real estate students at university, and Maptitude was the software used throughout those courses because it balanced ease of use with serious analytical capability. What do you like best about Maptitude?

I've found it really useful for both logistics and non-logistics projects. As well as being able to identify hot-spots in your own data and interrogate the built-in demographics, you can use the facility location tool or calculate weighted "centres of gravity", visualise size of flows and allocate customers between fulfilment centres or depots using road timings or miles - all important features if you're looking at logistics networks. What do you dislike about Maptitude?

Very little - I sometimes catch myself out - things like realising I'm looking for the wrong type of file to use - for example I'm looking for an Excel file to import, whereas the drop-down has pre-selected to working space ...but that's quickly resolved! Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

Recommendations to others considering Maptitude:

My recommendation to anyone buying any software is to make sure that you understand the business questions and issues you want to explore, and then look at the packages available and how they match. Ask for a live demo, or look at the website to see static examples of analysis you can carry out and videos showing how it's done. What problems is Maptitude solving and how is that benefiting you?

Mainly strategic logistics projects - facility/warehouse location; what area can be covered by a particular depot within, say, one day; calculating coverage, overlap and exposure between depots and outbases with respect to existing customers; calculating the demographics of areas covered when looking to the future of growing businesses; allocating customers to closest depot... And I've also helped logistics-related clients, for example, to manage the schedules of field engineers by analysing the size of patch and adjacency (or remoteness) of other visits; and potential workload. "My initial take on Maptitude 2015."

What do you like best about Maptitude?

As a user of Maptitute for the past 13 years, I can say that I am continually impressed at the improvements that have been made with each iteration of the software. I use the software primarily for business/retail applications, institutional research, and in transportation geography (logistics) analyses. One of the most valuable aspects for targeting and alignment tasks is the use of tracking fields, which allow stakeholders to see in real time how changes to geographies can affect sales opportunities. This capability significantly accelerates the decision-making process. What do you like best about Maptitude?

The learning curve is relatively short, making it easy to get started. There are multiple useful analytical tools available, and it's also straightforward to create templates. I appreciate that there are numerous training videos and tutorials available for learning how to use the software. However, the platform itself is user-friendly and intuitive, making it easy to navigate even without any prior training. Additionally, I find it to be an exceptional value for the price.
