Question on: Autodesk Forma (formerly Autodesk Construction Cloud)

Is there a way to share files with non members so that this can be used like a cloud file site.

We use this platform to be a single source for all project files. To eliminate the need for other sites like drop box having a way to share files would be essential. Also a way to share items or files to groups would be key instead of individually selecting members.

I believe if you have an Autodesk Sign in account you can have access to a project when the Original author adds you to the Project.

No, you have the option to share by user name or email address but they have to be associated with a valid user of the project.

You can send files to someone not in your network via email. I does it all the time.

Unfortunately that is not possible. Even though everyone has the same version of Revit if they don’t have a BIM license and are not invited to the project by the BIM coordinator they cannot access the file. What you can do is go to the web portal and download the file and share it that way as long as you follow confidentiality protocols.

You need to be a member of the team to be able to collaborate that way. We have a corporate ftp site or use Newforma to share large files.

What is the best way to manage a linked model if is not on BIM 360?

Should we upload the model we received from a client to 360? Or can we leave the model on a shared local server? Are there any benefits to either method?

Tyrone, I would highly recommend putting any model on 360! You can create a folder with permissions down to the user level and have them download the file/s. An issue with the local sever, that I have found, is the inability for external sources to have continual access the file/s. If you have the file on 360, it is easy enough to add them to the project so that they can download it. This alleviates the headaches caused by sharing the file/s each time they are requested.

What is the best way to host fixtures to a sloped ceiling? Are reference planes the route to take? How do I reduce the wait time when a model is opening? Should I audit a model when opening?

I was working on a parking structure garage and had a hard time hosting lighting fixtures to the different sloped elements of the ramps / ceilings without creating a million reference planes. Too many reference planes and cutting sections can sometimes be overwhelming and confusing to the user. Sometimes it takes 10 minutes or longer to open a model and this takes away productive and efficient use of my time when doing so.

I have a question for you first. Are you hosting to the actual ceiling in the model, or is the ceiling part of a linked model? If linked, you have to go the route of reference planes. Just as you can't copy/monitor ceilings, your ceiling hosted families won't host to a linked model's ceiling element. If you are working directly with a ceiling element in the model you are in, your family should be a ceilng based family, and it should take on the proper plane from the ceiling. Another fix is face based families which are much more flexible in where they can be placed. The way the family is constructed will determine how well it works in any of these scenarios. placing a face based, or ceiling based family, will slope with the face or ceiling, but it will not hang properly unless the family can be manipulated to do so with proper parameters. I hope this answers your question. A word of caution. When you are creating section views for family placement, delete them when you are done. They can clog a model and are unnecessary. I used to create one section and then just moved it around to fit my needs. Less clutter that way.
