G2 is excited to introduce a brand new category focused on news production and broadcasting industries called Newsroom Management Systems. The category was created to fill a gap within G2's Industry Verticals taxonomy with newsroom software while also providing a space for buyers who need a product to manage the daily operations and news cycles of newsrooms.

Modernizing journalism as we know it through newsroom management systems

Newsroom management technology has observed a string of advancements, but we are seeing this sudden drive in the field now more than ever. It is partly because journalists have gotten to the point of burnout by following a polarized news cycle, and also because of the need to engage people with news media. This happens to come at a time of digital transformation in several industries, so it is no surprise that newsrooms are getting on that digital advancement train too. These advancements support the digitalization of the newsroom industry to maximize efficiency for capturing dwindling audiences worldwide.

Newsroom management systems allow easy access to manage content production to help plan and search for topics, as well as report, edit, produce, publicize, and archive across all teams. This technology allows for coordination across all platforms to schedule and assign tasks and manage all editorial activities so that editorial staff complete work on deadlines.

Journalism for television, which is one of the first examples where newsroom management systems have been utilized, is now adapting to this technology by observing how it simplifies day-to-day operations. Broadcasting and content production are demanding jobs requiring multiple tasks and cross-team collaboration. Thus, introducing newsroom management systems technology allows for multiple benefits for those who work in television journalism.

Having newsroom management systems at a newsroom can help automate various tasks that previously took much longer. For instance, it greatly increases productivity for everyday tasks such as research, content creation, news operations, managing deadlines, and more. Communication has also remarkably improved since most newsroom management system platforms have message channels, and everyone can share access to different content topics in production. Finally, saving time is the most fundamental benefit to newsroom staff as journalists can focus on other projects, such as acquiring knowledge and working on future content.

Newsroom management systems on G2

It is clear that there are more benefits than drawbacks to using newsroom management systems, and reviewers so far have not been shy to confirm that. Despite it being a new category, Newsroom Management Systems is already pulling some positive reviews from customers:

G2 Reviews for Newsroom Management Systems

  • Desk-Net is the central communication tool in our team so that I can get involved in daily editorial planning, can make announcements and schedule my research….Whether people are working in office or from home, I can tell the editor or other departments what I am working on and avoid overlapping topics,” said G2 reviewer Gabriele S
  • “In the era of digital world, instant news publishing, and management it is really difficult for young journalists to achieve, but Superdesk provides and supports the current scenario where the work from home era needs a remote News Management system,” said G2 reviewer Vignesh R.
  • Tinkerlist has set fundamental communication streams and different media channels to boost the innovation of the firm. Besides, Tinkerlist creates a cohesive environment, discourages conflicts, and is a guide in matters of content publications,” said G2 reviewer Jordin M.
  • Dalet Pyramid has intuitive design, easy UI, and integrated AI and workflows that are easy to make. We have been able to do news management and distribution across social platforms using this tool,” said G2 reviewer Ravi G.

What’s next for newsroom software

Currently, G2’s Newsroom Management Systems category is starting out with 19 products. Given that this hot new software is for an industry that has been around since the 14th century, I believe we will see substantial growth for this category in terms of adding newer products. The expectation is that vendors selling newsroom management systems will most likely grow in competition as developers realize this technology's usefulness and market value—leaving this newsworthy technology to remain hot on the presses for a while longer.
