Functionality: Yellowfin delivers the key features our clients rely on, including custom dashboards and reporting, single sign-on, access filters, and CSS-based UI customisation. Relatively easy to implement and integrate with other systems.

Data Sources: Yellowfin offers multiple options for sourcing data for reports and dashboards however, our deployments have primarily relied on SQL-based implementations.

Updates & Evolution: We’ve used Yellowfin since version 7 and are currently running version 9.14 across multiple clients. Having seen the progression across versions, it’s clear that Yellowfin continues to refine functionality, improve usability, and respond to industry and technology trends. The backend web service runs on Tomcat which requires quite a bit of performance tuning. While the Yellowfin application itself is robust, Tomcat becomes a resource bottleneck particularly when handling large datasets ranging from thousands to millions of rows for filters and report generation. The dashboard design in Yellowfin BI is somewhat limited. I want to have more control over the design aspects, formatting, and chart customization. Specifically, I think there should be more modern themes, a wider variety of color palettes, cleaner typography options, and more contemporary widget styles. I really enjoy the idea of being able to design things the way I want. It gives a lot of freedom to create dashboards and reports that fit exactly what I need. Since I’m not a data analyst, it took me a long time to understand the system because of how many functions it has. The guides are helpful, but I still feel a simple “quick start” setup for beginners would make it much easier to get going. I wish there was an AI feature where I could just type what I want — like “create this dashboard” or “show me this report” — and it would instantly generate it, even in a presentation-ready format for display. It's flexibility with customizable content fields and layouts, along with a good selection of pre-defined content with expansions through more technical means has allowed us to utilize it as far more than simply a BI Dashboarding system. Some of the challenges include:

- Resource requirements keep growing with every update & this makes it tricky to manage the costing as a small business, thus we can suffer performance impacts.

- Long turnaround times on highly impacting bugs as our experience may not be a key priority within the pipeline but it causes significant challenges for us. One of the most noteworthy is an export to PDF bug with long data tables where content is either cut off horizontally or vertically, making no options to work around the bug in any way and multiple attempts have been made to do so.
