## Swimm Reviews
 ### 1. Our developers are so much more productive

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Information Technology and Services | Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** January 22, 2024

**What do you like best about Swimm?**

We have a lot of vendors that work with us in addition to our own team to the point it felt like we were spending more time explaining how our codebase works than doing productive work.

We've been able to use the AI feature Ask as our first source of truth. It's been pretty amazing just how much it is able to answer has become the way our developers walkthrough the code.

We also have a lot of custom features and integrations for specific customers. It's been really helpful having an accurate way to go back to them and see what the requirements for the current implementation were. our developers have been using it daily.

We tested a few AI products and use one other but none of them were able to give us the same depth of information and enable us to add our business logic in the same way.

Implementation was easy - it just indexes locally for each person. It takes a bit of time but you only do it once. After about a week we took a couple of junior devs and had them interview our more senior engineers. We took that information and added it to docs. Swimm has done a really good job of using everything we documented.

**What do you dislike about Swimm?**

Sometimes the answers aren't perfect. However, we've had a good experience using their add to doc to fix the answers for everyone else that asks afterwards. After a couple of weeks the answers have settled on a really high quality for the vast majority of questions.

**What problems is Swimm solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Faster onboarding and freeing up our more senior engineers for problem solving and "art of development" mentoring sessions instead of tactical questions.

 ### 2. /ask Swimm = fewer interruptions for my team, deeper work, faster deployment

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Computer & Network Security | Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** January 24, 2024

**What do you like best about Swimm?**

/ask Swimm truly changed the way the devs on my team interact with code. We tried out a bunch of the known AI assistants and none of them could contextualize our codebase like Swimm is able to do.

When a dev asks a question, /ask Swimm provides a correct and accurate answer. They can then even create new documentation with responses they got from /ask.

**What do you dislike about Swimm?**

Can't think of much to be honest... this tool really changed the way we work.

**What problems is Swimm solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Swimm helps us "close the knowledge gap" for devs on my team. When someone has a question, they can just ask and Swimm provides an accurate response that is contextualized to our codebase.

 ### 3. Awesome documentation platform for code

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Omer F. | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** December 13, 2023

**What do you like best about Swimm?**

Having swimm docs on a repo just makes it easier getting to know new pieces of code.
It keeps knowledge always up-to-date and relevant.
The VSCode plugin just makes it really handy and I would definitely recommend it to anyone looking to improve their teams knowledge sharing.

**What do you dislike about Swimm?**

Sometimes the GitHub app can post a lot of comments on PR, but if you make it a part of the workflow it comes in really handy.

**What problems is Swimm solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Keeps the code documentation always up-to-date.
Making it easy to find documentation for a specific code and features

 ### 4. A window to the future of code exploration

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Hanan L. | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** January 15, 2024

**What do you like best about Swimm?**

Swimm's new AI code assistant has been great for saving our engineers from answering the same question repeatedly, they save their answer once and Swimm accurately answers just like they would.

**What do you dislike about Swimm?**

I wish the chat would be in the Web interface as well

**What problems is Swimm solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Answering questions about existing code takes a lot of time of my senior engineers. Ask Swimm allows them to focus on their job. Another thing is exploring code before refactoring.

 ### 5. Code Documentation Solved - One Tool To Rule Them All

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Richard M. | CTO & Co-founder, advisor, dev at several software startups - USA (NYC), UK, EU, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** March 01, 2023

**What do you like best about Swimm?**

The main pain point of documentation is keeping it updated as your code changes. Swimm solves that beautifully. I'll never go back to the old ways!

**What do you dislike about Swimm?**

When you first integrate Swimm into your PR process, you might fee frustrated if your code changes rapidly. But get past that hump, and it becomes 2nd nature.

**What problems is Swimm solving and how is that benefiting you?**

We can document code quickly and cleanly and keep it updated. It avoids confusion about whether your documentation accurately describes your current code. The app is a joy to use and the support has been 1st class.

 ### 6. Good and light-weight documentation experience

**Rating:** 3.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Yovel Z. | Security engineer, Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** December 29, 2022

**What do you like best about Swimm?**

Swimm playbooks are, in my opinion, the most helpful way to onboard new members and to document code in a fun way

**What do you dislike about Swimm?**

Sometimes, Swimm lacks good search options and it can be a little complicated to "free term search" in the platform across multiple repos

**What problems is Swimm solving and how is that benefiting you?**

I think the most crucial thing about development in our organization is a lack of good and readable documentation of our code, and Swimm provides the option to do that in an easy & straight-forward way

 ### 7. Swimm Makes Documenting Code Actually Work

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Zach C. | Senior Software Developer, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** August 04, 2022

**What do you like best about Swimm?**

Anyone who has worked in the Software Development field knows how tedious keeping your documentation around code up-to-date can be. The line I hear repeated no matter where I am is: "The moment you write documentation for your code it is out-of-date". With Swimm, that remark is now emphatically untrue! The large issue surrounding code documentation is/was that there was no easy or enforceable way to alert developers when code referenced in documentation has changed. Swimm's product solves that issue and does even more. Swimm can tie directly into your PR flow, throwing an error when documentation needs the developer's addition due to changes, and can even auto-sync changes in situations it can infer the developer's intentions. The team at Swimm has been constantly adding new features and expanding what the product can do. They are always open to feedback and ideas on how their product can be improved. Our team immediately fell in love with their product and knew it was going to help us immensely.

Lastly, Swimm does not save any of your code base's files/code on their servers. All of your documentation will live inside your existing repository as readme files inside of a new .swm directory. So you can adopt Swimm with no fear of losing your documentation if you have to decide to pivot.

**What do you dislike about Swimm?**

Since Swimm does not save your code to their server(s) they are unable to add performance boosts on features that need to search through your repository/repositories. This means some actions on the site may take a bit longer to load in/be ready. I have only noticed this on features like their new "Auto-Generated Documentation Recommendations" which finds patterns in your files to recommend new documentation that is already populated with an example from your code. However, features inside of the text editor for new documentation have never felt too slow in my opinion.

**What problems is Swimm solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Swimm is solving the problem of how to write and maintain effective documentation surrounding your code base. Without Swimm your development team will have to remember themselves whenever your documentation needs to be updated due to a refactor, or even a small change. Without Swimm, developers from other teams that end up refactoring code you reference in some documentation would potentially never know to fix the documentation which then makes it out-of-date and whoever finds it in that state will have the burden of updating the documentation... which we can admit rarely happens, so the documentation sits in this weird out-of-date state. With Swimm, you can enforce that a PR can not be merged without fixing the Swimm documentation. Ensuring your documentation stays up-to-date right as your code changes.

 ### 8. With the free-text search swimm is a great documentation platform for me.

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Ophir K. | Security researcher, Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** December 28, 2022

**What do you like best about Swimm?**

The playlists are super helpful in the onboarding process.
Free Text search is a game changer.

**What do you dislike about Swimm?**

There was a period when free-text search was not a feature, it was a bit inconvenient.

**What problems is Swimm solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Making onboarding process user friendly and efficient.

**Official Response from Lauren Luz:**

> Hey Ophir! Thanks for taking the time to leave us a review. We really appreciate it!

 ### 9. Writing documentation has become enjoyable!

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Information Technology and Services | Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** August 15, 2022

**What do you like best about Swimm?**

The Auto-sync feature is a game changer. It keeps all documentation up to date as Swimm checks any docs pushed to GitHub and will let us know if something needs to be updated. If it's a small change they even do it automatically for you. My team also likes that we're able to view documentation in our CI.

**What do you dislike about Swimm?**

I have yet to find something that I dislike in the product.

**What problems is Swimm solving and how is that benefiting you?**

As a start-up that has scaled fast in the last year, we've had so many new team members join that need to ramp up to speed really fast. Since we started using Swimm, the majority of our knowledge base and knowledge about code lives in Swimm. Documentation is accessible and we know that when we're looking for documentation what we find will actually be relevant and not completely out of date and irrelevant.

**Official Response from Lauren Luz:**

> Thank you so much for sharing what you think with us and the community! We appreciate your positive feedback.

 ### 10. Useful for extra docs for code. Good concept, interesting features ahead!

**Rating:** 3.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Computer & Network Security | Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** December 27, 2022

**What do you like best about Swimm?**

Intellij plugin where I can see code of lines documented/referenced in Swimm

**What do you dislike about Swimm?**

I faced some bugs when I imported README.md, I needed to do workarounds by manual editing of PRs. Intellij plugin might be better: referencing a file is not reflected. Refreshing of annotations required restart of intellij.

**What problems is Swimm solving and how is that benefiting you?**

I helps with extra docs for code, it increase visibility of docs in IDE (intellij).

 ### 11. The easiest way to document code

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Or S. | Engineering Team Lead, Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** November 13, 2022

**What do you like best about Swimm?**

Swimm lets you easily select code parts from many files and document them together as a single flow.

**What do you dislike about Swimm?**

The IDE plugin for IntelliJ is not very useful and needs improvement.

**What problems is Swimm solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Swimm helps my team and me document our code quickly and without hassle. It also helps us maintain the documentation when we have changes in the code.

**Official Response from Lauren Luz:**

> Hey Or. Thanks so much for taking the time to leave us this review! We really appreciate it.

 ### 12. The process of writing docs seems much more effective

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Shai Y. | Software Engineer, Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** November 10, 2022

**What do you like best about Swimm?**

Linking doc to code snippet.
Easy markdown language.
Enforcing changes on doc when the code changes.

**What do you dislike about Swimm?**

No option to link snippet on other docs (although you can add link to the full doc)

**What problems is Swimm solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Maintaining technical documentation.
Easy linking of code areas to the docs

 ### 13. Great documentation tool!

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Financial Services | Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** November 13, 2022

**What do you like best about Swimm?**

Easy to use. It requires a small learning curve like any other platform, but once you got it, you can document complex flows and more in minimum time.

**What do you dislike about Swimm?**

Code selection UX, once you select some lines, you get kind of a "jump", I think it can be improved.

**What problems is Swimm solving and how is that benefiting you?**

In general, it helped us add documentation to complex flows in the code that we usually add comments for it, but it also helps us keep the context of it, in a readme file that is more clear and readable.
Once this document exists, it can help the process of knowledge sharing and even keep it up to date because it's inside and liked to the code.

**Official Response from Lauren Luz:**

> Thank you for your review! Happy to hear that our solution is helping solve the pains associated with knowledge sharing.

 ### 14. Swimm is great but it still lacks a lot of important and quality of life features.

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Computer Software | Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** June 06, 2022

**What do you like best about Swimm?**

The fact that my code remains clean of comments and the documentation lives in a separate space, yet it's linked to every piece of code I desire.
Also, the fact that Swimm allows you to keep the documentation up to date is amazing.

**What do you dislike about Swimm?**

The native app is cumbersome and a little slow.
Its interaction with the IDE plugins is still lackluster.
Ideally, I would want a fully functional web UI (SaaS-like).

**Recommendations to others considering Swimm:**

Swimm is a great product, solving important issues.
With the proper use of this tool a dev team can elevate their efficiency by a lot.
Additionally, good documentation (and the tutorial/playlist function of Swimm) improve the onboarding process for new employees quite a lot.
Finally, Swimm makes it easier to write documentation, thus making even developers who dislike writing docs (the vast majority) write at least slightly more than they normally would, thanks to Swimm's integration with CI or pre-commit tools.

**What problems is Swimm solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Documentation inside the code files is nice but it adds clutter to the code and also may get outdated if not maintained alongside the code itself.
Swimm solves both of these problems and this is exactly what many dev teams need.

 ### 15. very useful to document git stuff

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Nurbolot K. | SRE, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** August 17, 2022

**What do you like best about Swimm?**

User-friendly and easy to use, makes it easier to document each manifest on GitHub. I really like it, it helps our team to explain what each code does and so on

**What do you dislike about Swimm?**

After navigating to Swimm from the Github page it does not turn back when I click the back tab. And the limit of users for the free version is too small I think

**What problems is Swimm solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Collaboration between team members, especially for newly hired people

 ### 16. I value Swimm as a user friendly, consumable documentation platform

**Rating:** 3.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Computer & Network Security | Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** December 28, 2022

**What do you like best about Swimm?**

I like the format of the docs and the git integration

**What do you dislike about Swimm?**

The fact that you can't search for keywords

**What problems is Swimm solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Documenting complex software pipeline with code examples in a consumable way

 ### 17. Very good experience working with the app. Cool concept, and fun to use.

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Computer Software | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** May 31, 2022

**What do you like best about Swimm?**

That it is super fun to use and the use case is extremely relevant.
I especially appreciate the "Playlist" feature that allows me to dynamically document the codebase spread across multiple services and repositories.

**What do you dislike about Swimm?**

I don't think there are many downsides to using Swimm; it forces you and your team to take documentation seriously, which is always a good thing in the long term. I definitely have feature requests though, so that I could use Swimm even more effectively.

**Recommendations to others considering Swimm:**

It's a really good tool once you understand some of the core concepts of documenting with Swimm.

**What problems is Swimm solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Swimm forces me and my team to think about proper documentation of our code as well as the tech design supporting it. Swimm also helps me keep the documentation up to date with any code changes done over time.

 ### 18. Documentation Leveled Up

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Computer Software | Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** August 16, 2022

**What do you like best about Swimm?**

Two-way documentation syncing: code links to documentation in VS Code; snippet documentation dynamically links to code and responds to code changes

**What do you dislike about Swimm?**

The markdown editor is a little bit clunky. It feels like an incomplete copy of Notion's markdown editor. My advice: Just go the whole way. Whatever Notion's editor does, copy down to the T. For example, dragging to re-order code or text blocks.

**What problems is Swimm solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Onboarding and remote collaboration. Swimm encourages and incentivizes active maintenance of existing documentation so that it doesn't fall by the wayside.

 ### 19. A great tool that is a staple to our development flow

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Nick L. | Junior Software Engineer, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** August 19, 2022

**What do you like best about Swimm?**

It syncs up with our github repos and it makes it easy to find a code snippet and create a document for it. It also is pretty intelligent when there are changes to the documentation that may need updating.

**What do you dislike about Swimm?**

Overall it does what I expect. One feature I wanted to see was a search bar for our files which I saw was recently integrated.

**What problems is Swimm solving and how is that benefiting you?**

We get an easy way to document our code base that stays up to date.

 ### 20. Making documentation great again!

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Alon S. | Mobile Developer, Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** June 08, 2022

**What do you like best about Swimm?**

The ability to block code changes that make documentation obsolete or outdated.
Right at the start, we knew we'd integrate Swimm in our Ci/CD process to ensure our documentation stays awesome.

**What do you dislike about Swimm?**

Lacking multi-repo documentation on single units (although has another alternative as solution for now)

**What problems is Swimm solving and how is that benefiting you?**

We usually find out that documents written a few months/years back are outdated and need to be refreshed.
Swimm made is a problem of the past, making documentation great again!

 ### 21. Swimm has alot of potential, yet is seems premature at the moment.

**Rating:** 3.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Gal B. | Linux embedded engineer, Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** June 23, 2022

**What do you like best about Swimm?**

It lets you document processes and algorithms - while adding code snippets that will always be aligned with actual code

**What do you dislike about Swimm?**

It slows down CI/CD by adding another git `task`, it has annoying (but workaroundable) bugs

**Recommendations to others considering Swimm:**

Be patient and use their beloved staff for support

**What problems is Swimm solving and how is that benefiting you?**

It let me document my feature with a guarantee that it'll always be aligned with the real logic and code

 ### 22. Great tool for documentation

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Mor I. | Software engineer, Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** November 13, 2022

**What do you like best about Swimm?**

How simple is to write docs now and onboard new members

**What do you dislike about Swimm?**

feel like plugin for IntelliJ need improvements

**What problems is Swimm solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Currently team knowledge is not shared between team members

**Official Response from Lauren Luz:**

> Hi Mor! Thanks for your review, we really appreciate it.

 ### 23. Know/remember your code business logic with almost self-maintained documentation

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Computer Software | Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** June 05, 2022

**What do you like best about Swimm?**

* The idea of validating documentation (like tests) as a result of the last code changes is great. Such validation reduces drastically the number of outdated comments and gives additional confidence during the code review.
* Swimm documents (and templates) are very useful for onboarding sessions.
* Swimm team is very responsive and open, making the interactions (like support or training) enjoyable and productive.

**What do you dislike about Swimm?**

Some features are still missing, so it will be great to get an official features roadmap with preliminary dates for the implementation.

**What problems is Swimm solving and how is that benefiting you?**

* Providing mode context for development
* Providing context (and confidence) for code reviews
* Building onboarding documents

 ### 24. Swimm make code comments un necessary & more organized

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Financial Services | Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** May 31, 2022

**What do you like best about Swimm?**

Swimm helps me document processes that are cross files, I created one document with all the code snippets that I need and added explanations. And if the code has changed I could see that my document needs an update.

**What do you dislike about Swimm?**

- missing integration with confluence
- UI/UX in the edit document can be improved

**What problems is Swimm solving and how is that benefiting you?**

- writing in code documentation
- createing onbording documents for stakeholders

 ### 25. Has promise

**Rating:** 2.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Information Technology and Services | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** August 19, 2022

**What do you like best about Swimm?**

This has promise but may be a little premature for the needs that we had right now. Will continue to watch and re-evaluate in hopes to adopt in the future.

**What do you dislike about Swimm?**

Having to grant access too ALL personal git repos in order to utilize the tool.

**What problems is Swimm solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Helping with documentation and prompting for changes.

 ### 26. Great product with a truly unique approch to knowledge sharing

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Computer Software | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** August 16, 2022

**What do you like best about Swimm?**

The continuous documentation approach approach is wonderful! No more stale docs. Also, the automatically generated docs are awesome!

**What do you dislike about Swimm?**

Pricing is a bit high IMO. But if it makes sense for your company, it's well worth a try

**What problems is Swimm solving and how is that benefiting you?**

making sure documentation is clear and up to date

**Official Response from Lauren Luz:**

> Thanks so much for taking the time to leave us this review! We really appreciate it.

 ### 27. Swimm integrate Documentation in your CI

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Computer Software | Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** June 01, 2022

**What do you like best about Swimm?**

I like the practice of keeping the documentation in sync with the code by marking relevant code lines inside special quotes.
Moreover, the CI ensures that if the marked line gets changed so the docs also have to be reviewed.

**What do you dislike about Swimm?**

Nothing! Awaiting upcoming new features!

**What problems is Swimm solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Integrate documentation updates into the CI cycle.
