What is Recurly, and what problem is it built to solve?

Recurly is a subscription billing and revenue management platform built to help businesses manage the subscription lifecycle. It brings together subscriber management, payment orchestration, churn management, and real-time analytics.

What languages does Recurly support?

Recurly supports 18 languages, including Chinese (Simplified), Danish, Dutch, English, French, and others.

What company sizes and industries is Recurly the best fit for?

Recurly is most represented among small-business and mid-market teams, with positive users spanning several industries. The clearest clusters include:
  • Company size: Small businesses and mid-market organizations are most represented.
  • Industries: Software and IT, consumer services, entertainment, and financial services are prominent.

How long does it take to implement Recurly across a team?

Implementation timelines vary with the setup, but teams most commonly report getting Recurly live within one to three months. Other reported timelines include:
Time to go live Relative frequency
1–3 months Most commonly reported
Under 1 month Also frequently reported
3–6 months Reported regularly
6–12 months Reported less often

What customer support options does Recurly provide, and how do users find the overall support experience?

Recurly provides support through self-service resources and direct channels such as phone, chat, and email/help desk. The support experience is often described as responsive, knowledgeable, and helpful, particularly during onboarding and technical questions; users also describe inconsistent responses or difficulty reaching the right live support when an issue is more involved.

What is the experience like for teams switching to Recurly from another tool?

Switching to Recurly has often meant replacing a payment processor, a subscription tool, or an in-house billing setup that lacked subscription-specific features. Users describe moving for stronger subscription management, more flexible payment gateway options, improved recovery and retention tools, and clearer navigation or reporting; the transition is described as straightforward in some cases, while more complex setups can require technical work and onboarding support.

What tools and platforms does Recurly integrate with, and how do these integrations help users get more value from the product?

Recurly offers 25 integrations. The integrations users name span payment, customer, finance, and marketing workflows:
  • Payments: Stripe, Adyen, and PayPal/Braintree.
  • CRM and customer support: Salesforce and Zendesk.
  • Finance: NetSuite and QuickBooks Online.
  • Marketing: Mailchimp.
These connections can link subscription and payment activity with customer, support, finance, and marketing systems, reducing the need to move information between tools manually. Users also note that integration setup and coordination can take extra effort in some cases.

What features or capabilities could make Recurly even more useful?

More flexible reporting and analytics are the clearest opportunities to make Recurly more useful, especially for teams that need deeper analysis without exporting data to other tools. Other useful improvements include:
  • Offer more customizable reports, filters, exports, and breakdowns for churn, plans, and subscriber activity.
  • Make hosted checkout pages, invoices, and customer-facing email templates more configurable.
  • Add more flexible billing controls for pauses, prorations, reminders, and other plan-specific edge cases.
  • Improve bulk actions and visibility into integration errors so teams can manage accounts and troubleshoot more efficiently.

"So much easier than creating invoices in QuickBooks"
5/5
What do you like best about Recurly?

We are a small-scale marketing agency with 100+ clients. Without Recurly, the accounting department would be drowning each month to create invoices. Recurly is very easy to use, has a ton of options that fit our invoicing needs, and who doesn't like getting paid automatically? Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about Recurly?

Unfortunately, Recurly is on the expensive side due to their service fees but this is a small price to pay for the amount of time and money we're saving by having an automatic payment system. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

"Powerful subscription tool"
4/5
What do you like best about Recurly?

It's so configurable. It allows you to manage pricing separately from the product. So, we don't need a product release to make a slight pricing adjustment or to allow plans to have more features. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about Recurly?

If you know how to use it - it's great. But, we've had a few situations where a user forgot a step or entered the wrong information in a subscription and we heard from a customer. Thankfully, it's pretty easy to fix mistakes, make refunds, reset subscription items, etc. I haven't tried to use the reporting in a while as my role changed, but I felt that could be improved. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

Response from Cinnamon Perryman of Recurly

Glad you appreciate our configurability. We appreciate you’ve taken the time to share your experience with Recurly. Reporting functions are always improving. Continue to review the documentation and sign up for our product updates. If there’s something else we can do to improve your experience, please let us know.

What do you like best about Recurly?

We've been using Recurly for nearly 5 years now, and it's really helped us with handling country-specific taxes and everything else related to subscriptions. The support team does an awesome job of helping us with any questions we had. Overall I can really recommend looking into Recurly if you are looking for a solid subscription management tool. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about Recurly?

There are just a few minor issues we faced over the years, but with all the help from the support team, we were able to find workarounds. One thing we would love to have is moving subscriptions from one account to another one. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

Response from Cinnamon Perryman of Recurly

We appreciate you’ve taken the time to share your experience. Recurly works with customers worldwide, enabling the full subscriber lifecycle; and we especially love celebrating with our customers. Congratulations.

"A good subscription management software"
4.5/5
What do you like best about Recurly?

I don't have much experience in subscription management software but my experience with Recurly has been very pleasant so far. Their tool is easy to use, it's stable and almost never has a problem. And if you have some questions their support is very accessible and helpful. I like the fact that we can send subscription-related emails to our customers directly from Recurly. Plus, it shows some basic reports and has some churn analysis. I also know that they listen to their customers, as I've submitted a feature request to them once and I saw it realized sometime later, which is always super cool :) Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about Recurly?

There is nothing I dislike about Recurly. Only maybe if their analysis options were a bit more advanced but hey, we have other tools to do that so it's not the crucial thing :) Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

"Worst CS experience and the least advanced technology on the market."
0/5
What do you like best about Recurly?

Nothing besides comms with sales person. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about Recurly?

1) Technology is really outdated

2) Very limited capabilities of the product compare to their competitors

3) Recurly won't let you migrate to another provider as they store customers CC data and will make your life extremely difficult if you'll try to do so. We've been chasing them for 3 months to migrate our CC tokens and still got nothing (was a year ago) so we just lost our early customers (around +-$100k in value) and migrated to another provider. We were really lucky that we didn't expose ourselves to higher losses.

4) CS simply ignores tickets and doesn't care Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

Response from Cinnamon Perryman of Recurly

We appreciate you’ve taken the time to express your concern. It appears we’ve fallen short. This isn’t acceptable to us. Recurly provides a subscription management platform for 2200+ businesses—and we welcome every opportunity to improve. "For our SaaS business, Recurly handles the details"

What do you like best about Recurly?

Very flexible API allows us to integrate tightly with our app. Very reliable too. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about Recurly?

I wish they had more powerful support for sending renewal reminders. Their support for this is very basic and doesn't allow much customisation based on plans or recurring discounts. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

Response from Cinnamon Perryman of Recurly

We appreciate you’ve taken the time to share your experience with Recurly. Our subscription management, customization and discount features are constantly improving. "Professional subscription management software with an amazing supportive team behind."
4.5/5
What do you like best about Recurly?

Among many different best things with Recurly, I would like to mention the onboarding process and especially the amazing support we got from the onboarding team to transfer existing subscriptions smoothly from our previous platform to Recurly. The other challenge was the integration of 3DS and Apple Pay on our website, where we use Recurly JS and again we had professional assistance and detailed reports from Recurly's technical assistance team. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about Recurly?

We had another checkout connect to the same PayPal account with Recurly, at some recurring payments from Recruly started to fail because PayPal prevented duplicated order IDs. We never got any notification about this from Recurly and noticed that too late, when we lost ~200k. I think a professional software like Recurly must be more careful and draw attention to similar things. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

Response from Cinnamon Perryman of Recurly

We appreciate you’ve taken the time to share your positive dunning, revenue recovery, development, and analytics experiences. Recurly especially loves it when onboarding goes well! We also appreciate your detailed comments about the checkout connect challenge; please continue to communicate these areas of improvement through support@recurly.com.

"My thoughts on recurly"
3.5/5
What do you like best about Recurly?

Analytics dashboard and ability to export data

However, I feel there could be additional reports on offer. Quite often I have to export data and pull it into Excel and build my own reports as there is some information I cannot get out of the box. Examples would be average subscription duration. Cohorted churn reports for day 1 churn, week 1 churn, month 1 churn, etc

I would also like to see churn broken down by plan type and ability to toggle between monthly and annual churn. Currently, I have Excel templates to calculate all these things. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about Recurly?

The LTV calculation is currently broke - I have a support ticket open

The UI changes a few weeks ago - in my opinion, I think it looks broke - I messaged support to say it was missing a CSS style sheet

There are some gaps in the API - our engineers suggested in a retro that we move away from Recurly due to the gaps and incomplete docs - the example in my mind is using the stair step pricing model via the API for a custom checkout with two dimensions to decide the pricing level - this seemingly was supported from the docs but the API didn't work and then your support team confirmed that to be the case Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.
