What is Recurly, and what problem is it built to solve?

Recurly is a subscription billing and revenue management platform built to help businesses manage the subscription lifecycle. It brings together subscriber management, payment orchestration, churn management, and real-time analytics.

What languages does Recurly support?

Recurly supports 18 languages, including Chinese (Simplified), Danish, Dutch, English, French, and others.

What company sizes and industries is Recurly the best fit for?

Recurly is most represented among small-business and mid-market teams, with positive users spanning several industries. The clearest clusters include:
  • Company size: Small businesses and mid-market organizations are most represented.
  • Industries: Software and IT, consumer services, entertainment, and financial services are prominent.

How long does it take to implement Recurly across a team?

Implementation timelines vary with the setup, but teams most commonly report getting Recurly live within one to three months. Other reported timelines include:
Time to go live Relative frequency
1–3 months Most commonly reported
Under 1 month Also frequently reported
3–6 months Reported regularly
6–12 months Reported less often

What customer support options does Recurly provide, and how do users find the overall support experience?

Recurly provides support through self-service resources and direct channels such as phone, chat, and email/help desk. The support experience is often described as responsive, knowledgeable, and helpful, particularly during onboarding and technical questions; users also describe inconsistent responses or difficulty reaching the right live support when an issue is more involved.

What is the experience like for teams switching to Recurly from another tool?

Switching to Recurly has often meant replacing a payment processor, a subscription tool, or an in-house billing setup that lacked subscription-specific features. Users describe moving for stronger subscription management, more flexible payment gateway options, improved recovery and retention tools, and clearer navigation or reporting; the transition is described as straightforward in some cases, while more complex setups can require technical work and onboarding support.

What tools and platforms does Recurly integrate with, and how do these integrations help users get more value from the product?

Recurly offers 25 integrations. The integrations users name span payment, customer, finance, and marketing workflows:
  • Payments: Stripe, Adyen, and PayPal/Braintree.
  • CRM and customer support: Salesforce and Zendesk.
  • Finance: NetSuite and QuickBooks Online.
  • Marketing: Mailchimp.
These connections can link subscription and payment activity with customer, support, finance, and marketing systems, reducing the need to move information between tools manually. Users also note that integration setup and coordination can take extra effort in some cases.

What features or capabilities could make Recurly even more useful?

More flexible reporting and analytics are the clearest opportunities to make Recurly more useful, especially for teams that need deeper analysis without exporting data to other tools. Other useful improvements include:
  • Offer more customizable reports, filters, exports, and breakdowns for churn, plans, and subscriber activity.
  • Make hosted checkout pages, invoices, and customer-facing email templates more configurable.
  • Add more flexible billing controls for pauses, prorations, reminders, and other plan-specific edge cases.
  • Improve bulk actions and visibility into integration errors so teams can manage accounts and troubleshoot more efficiently.

What do you dislike about Recurly?

I have to sign in again each time I need to access an account. Besides the sales of subscriptions, I wish I had more editing and control choices for the bills. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

"Works OK but probably some better options out there"
2/5
What do you like best about Recurly?

Recurly has many of the features you'd need to set up subscription billing. And they have a well-documented API. It's also fairly reliable and there's transparency around availability (although there are fairly regular issues with parts of the system). Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about Recurly?

- Customer service - we have numerous frustrations with Recurly and, whenever we raise them with the team, our comments seem to fall on deaf ears. In one specific example, we asked for a simple copy change to the way credits are described on invoices because it confuses our customers and creates a lot of work for our customer service team. But, all we were told was "I have submitted your feedback to our product team but do not have any kind of timetable of when or if this may be considered". So, they're not saying they disagree with the copy change, they're just saying it may or may not be considered. And there is no timetable for when that may or may not happen. Disappointing to say the least.

- Reports - reports are not great (we've provided a lot of feedback on this over the years). So, we have to invest in ChartMogul to provide decent metrics (at quite a high cost).

- Invoices are not clear enough for our customers

- Fairly expensive Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

"Increasing Revenue and User Retention"

What do you like best about Recurly?

One of the standout features of Recurly is its robust dunning management system. Previously, failed credit card transactions were a major source of revenue loss and customer churn for us. With Recurly, the automated handling of failed payments has been a game-changer. The system intelligently retries failed transactions and sends timely reminders to customers, which has substantially improved our payment recovery rates. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

"My recurly experience legit review"
5/5
What do you like best about Recurly?

I like using recurly because it is so easy to use and a beginner-friendly tool. Whenever locating an account and there's no way for us to locate it, we normally message our supervisor through skype, Slack, or google workspace, but sometimes, they won't respond right away. So in order for us to locate a specific account, we would as for their transaction details. We asked for their email address, the last four digits of the card, and the charged amount, and voila the account will appear right away. ALL IN ALL, THE BEST TOOL FOR BILLING AND ORDER PLACING. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about Recurly?

What I dislike about this is when the recurly's system is updating. We normally encounter errors, delay in searching a specific account or sometimes we experience some sort of glitch while using the tool. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

"Recurly is one of the best subscription billing platforms out there."
5/5
What do you like best about Recurly?

Recurly has best features in the industry, some of which we use are as below:

1. Recurly offers top notch professional services for migration into Recurly.

2. Lots of documentation around API integration.

3. Ability to interface with lots of payment gateways.

4. Credit card updater service.

5. Simple and easy to use API.

6. Excellent support. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about Recurly?

There are some points where Recurly can improve, some of which are as below:

1. Improve data export analytics. Some data exports do not include required columns. I've raised this with support, but have seen no changes since last 6 months.

2. Professional services are expensive.

3. Some features are difficult to build around Recurly, for example bill per seat feature for subscriptions. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

"Easy to Navigate - Vital CRM"
5/5
What do you like best about Recurly?

Being able to break down based on subscription as well as payments. Having a database where everything is clean and easy to navigate is essential to my business, and with over 2,000 subscribers, it can be easy to lose track... not with Recurly, though. :) Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about Recurly?

My biggest issue with Recurly is how they set up their reports. From time to time, when I try to download a report, it will eliminate critical information that I'm looking at but can't get once it's downloaded. If the report offered a way to include ALL data stored, that would be awesome. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

"Slow innovation pace"
3.5/5
What do you like best about Recurly?

Easy to configure several payment gateways. They were pioneers in automating recurring payment management. The invoices site is a good resource for delegating all security concerns. They have excellent taxes management according to several market regulations. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about Recurly?

Bad developer experience, we have been using an old fashion XML API for a long time. It is difficult to test things. Some use cases like instant payments are difficult to implement. We have to rely on other products to get good MRR insights. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.
