It visualises query execution plans (EXPLAIN ANALYZE output), and gives performance advice. The advice was written for (and by) humans, and tips are scored based on an estimate of their time-saving potential. The visualised plans can be shared, or kept private. You can also use the product programmatically, via our API. Experienced folks tell us it saves them time, and people newer to Postgres performance work tell us they learn new things while using it. We run a multi-service application with several PostgreSQL databases, and as our data has grown, query performance has become more important. As a non-expert in DB optimization, pgMustard has done a great job boiling down the large amount of info Postgres gives you into genuinely useful visualizations. The smart filtering that collapses fast operations helps a lot—our queries often involve multiple joins across tables, and the tool surfaces what's actually slow. The built-in explanations have also taught the team about PostgreSQL internals, which helps us write smart SQL going forward. **What do you dislike about pgMustard?** Not much. Since pgMustard is so great at visualizing and annotating slow section of queries I’d be curious if there’s a way to bring it into our codebase more optimistically and scan potentially slow queries during CI/CD or something like that. Basically just more ways to use pgMustard :) **What problems is pgMustard solving and how is that benefiting you?** We use it when a query feels slow or when writing complex queries with record lookups and aggregations. It's helped us catch missing indexes, bad row estimates, and inefficient scans before they hit production. The time savings add up when you're not guessing at what to optimize. ### 2. Why would I want to pay for one, when there are free ones out there? My opinion immediately changed when I first tried it, though. The visualizations are not only more readable than others, pgMustard also does an amazing job of pointing out the problematic parts of the analyzed query. On top of that, it provides clear explanations on what happened in that part of the query, why it is a problem, and what I can try to fix it. This is above and beyond what any other tool I’ve tried provides. It’s very actionable and speeds up my troubleshooting and fixing process my a lot. **What do you dislike about pgMustard?** Copy & pasting explain results is a bit cumbersome, especially when analyzing a lot of variations of the same query. I’d appreciate some tooling to automate that part of the process. **What problems is pgMustard solving and how is that benefiting you?** It reduces the time it takes to understand why a particular database query is slow and what to do about it. ### 3. Plus, they're constantly keeping it up to date with new Postgres versions and making improvements to the product. The customer support is brilliant - super responsive and helpful. **What do you dislike about pgMustard?** Nothing really. Query plans use to only be stored locally, but they are permanently saved now, which is great. **What problems is pgMustard solving and how is that benefiting you?** pgMustard makes it easy to figure out why my Postgres queries are slow. It's helped me test new indexes on my production database and speed up my slowest queries.
