What is Onshape, and what problem is it built to solve?

Onshape is a cloud-based mechanical CAD tool used to create and manage 3D designs. Its collaborative workflow and built-in version history help teams work on shared designs and keep track of changes.

What languages does Onshape support?

Onshape supports 9 languages: Chinese (Simplified), Chinese (Traditional), English, French, German, and others.

What company sizes and industries is Onshape the best fit for?

Onshape is especially relevant to smaller businesses and engineering-focused teams, with users also coming from mid-market and enterprise organizations. The strongest reviewer-reported clusters include these company sizes and industries:
  • Small businesses: The most prominent company-size segment.
  • Mid-market organizations: Also represented across teams using Onshape for product and mechanical design.
  • Mechanical and industrial engineering: A prominent industry group.
  • Manufacturing and industrial automation: Common settings for design and engineering work.
  • Design: Another visible group, including product and industrial design work.

How long does it take to implement Onshape across a team?

Teams report a range of implementation timelines, but getting started in less than a month is the clearest pattern. Some teams are up and running in under a day, while broader rollouts can take longer.
Time to go live Relative frequency
Under 1 month Most common
Under 1 day Common
1–6 months Also reported
6 months or longer Less common

What customer support options does Onshape provide, and how do users find the overall support experience?

Onshape provides support through email/help desk, chat, and self-service resources such as its FAQs, forums, and knowledge base. The support experience is often described as responsive, helpful, and knowledgeable, though some users find replies slower or less complete for specialized questions.

What is the experience like for teams switching to Onshape from another tool?

Switching to Onshape is often driven by a need for better collaboration, simpler version and file management, and less dependence on local hardware or IT maintenance. Teams moving from desktop CAD and PDM tools—including SolidWorks and other established CAD systems—describe gaining shared, current design data and easier remote access. The new workflow can take some adjustment, particularly around unfamiliar modeling and assembly methods, and transferring legacy design history may require extra work.

What features or capabilities could make Onshape even more useful?

Onshape could be more useful for teams whose work depends on detailed drawings or specialized modeling and manufacturing workflows. The recurring improvement areas include:
  • Expand drawing tools, including editing, annotation, dimensioning, and templates.
  • Strengthen advanced modeling, especially surfacing and 3D sketching.
  • Develop more capable integrated CAM and simulation workflows.
  • Add offline or limited-access functionality for times when an internet connection is unavailable.

"Convenient in the initial design process but flawed in some later stages"
4/5
What do you like best about Onshape?

The accessibility of Onshape is remarkable. And it becomes more useful when you want a feedback from your senior as quickly as possible. In terms of part design, it is simply too convenient to have all the parts to be glanced in a single 3D environment other than the assembly. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about Onshape?

That being said, it still has a long way to go, for example drawing environment is not up to the standard set by its peers. Drawing environment is simply too inconsistent for a long session. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

"Easy to use CAD"
5/5
What do you like best about Onshape?

One of the best things is that you are always using the most up-to-date version. You never need to install a new version. Everyone is using the same version globally.

Being able to collaborate over distance is a major plus as I work remotely but can still work on things that the people in the shop are looking at and referencing.

Customer support is A+! I have used other CAD systems that wanted to charge me hourly tech support to solve issues with the program. Onshape is very quick to respond to any emails sent and either show what I've missed or offer a solution to the problem. Also, several of the things that I have mentioned as 'nice to have' features have been implemented in updates so it is very encouraging to have the product growing in response to user feedback. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about Onshape?

There are still some things that Onshape doesn't have that other CAD programs have had but every program seems to have something that others don't and it appears to just be a matter of time before Onshape will have added all the shortcuts that I was used to in other programs.

The Android version of Onshape is a bit underwhelming but the fact that I can show things on my phone is pretty great! Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

"An extremely capable, easy to use, affordable cloud based CAD platform."
5/5
What do you like best about Onshape?

The intuitive functionality is supported by a comprehensive library of courses which allowed me to teach myself CAD from scratch and design complex prototype parts ready for 3D printing and injection moulding. This is truely a program suitable for experts without the barriers for non-experts to develop their skills and produce fantastic results. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about Onshape?

Occasionally I have had to go back into the training courses a couple of times to get my head round a couple of the more complex functions - but I think that is to be expected when you have such a broad and complex software package. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you like best about Onshape?

Versioning: history of all the changes and possibilities to go back on previous versions of a part are keys for a clean product design Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about Onshape?

Drawings are sometimes awful to work with. The drawing module is really late in terms of performance compared to other CAD software Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

"OnShape is Revolutionary"
5/5
What do you like best about Onshape?

The file management that allows for version control and collaboration. A close second is the cloud processing so I can open large assemblies on any computer including my phone. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about Onshape?

The support for 2D drawings is limited and laggy. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.
