What is Onshape, and what problem is it built to solve?

Onshape is a cloud-based mechanical CAD tool used to create and manage 3D designs. Its collaborative workflow and built-in version history help teams work on shared designs and keep track of changes.

What languages does Onshape support?

Onshape supports 9 languages: Chinese (Simplified), Chinese (Traditional), English, French, German, and others.

What company sizes and industries is Onshape the best fit for?

Onshape is especially relevant to smaller businesses and engineering-focused teams, with users also coming from mid-market and enterprise organizations. The strongest reviewer-reported clusters include these company sizes and industries:
  • Small businesses: The most prominent company-size segment.
  • Mid-market organizations: Also represented across teams using Onshape for product and mechanical design.
  • Mechanical and industrial engineering: A prominent industry group.
  • Manufacturing and industrial automation: Common settings for design and engineering work.
  • Design: Another visible group, including product and industrial design work.

How long does it take to implement Onshape across a team?

Teams report a range of implementation timelines, but getting started in less than a month is the clearest pattern. Some teams are up and running in under a day, while broader rollouts can take longer.
Time to go live Relative frequency
Under 1 month Most common
Under 1 day Common
1–6 months Also reported
6 months or longer Less common

What customer support options does Onshape provide, and how do users find the overall support experience?

Onshape provides support through email/help desk, chat, and self-service resources such as its FAQs, forums, and knowledge base. The support experience is often described as responsive, helpful, and knowledgeable, though some users find replies slower or less complete for specialized questions.

What is the experience like for teams switching to Onshape from another tool?

Switching to Onshape is often driven by a need for better collaboration, simpler version and file management, and less dependence on local hardware or IT maintenance. Teams moving from desktop CAD and PDM tools—including SolidWorks and other established CAD systems—describe gaining shared, current design data and easier remote access. The new workflow can take some adjustment, particularly around unfamiliar modeling and assembly methods, and transferring legacy design history may require extra work.

What features or capabilities could make Onshape even more useful?

Onshape could be more useful for teams whose work depends on detailed drawings or specialized modeling and manufacturing workflows. The recurring improvement areas include:
  • Expand drawing tools, including editing, annotation, dimensioning, and templates.
  • Strengthen advanced modeling, especially surfacing and 3D sketching.
  • Develop more capable integrated CAM and simulation workflows.
  • Add offline or limited-access functionality for times when an internet connection is unavailable.

What do you like best about Onshape?

Its cloud-based systems are very good and its ability to support collaborative work. Overall it has everything most engineers need for solid modeling, sheet metal modeling, etc. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about Onshape?

Making drawings is the worst part by far. It is extremely laggy and has a delay for everything. It sucks spending 10 minutes making a part and 20 minutes creating a drawing. Overall it's the biggest drag with the software. There are other issues with the drawings, such as not being able to make small movements that you would find in any other drawing software. It's gotten better, but even after working with Onshape support it didn't improve. The issue stems from a large number of entities such as text which seem to slow it down. "Efficient, streamlined and organised"

What do you like best about Onshape?

Everything is centralised which makes it easier to keep track of it. Its easy to use and even easier to export. The help centre is great. They usually reply within a day or maybe even the next. The interface is clear and the 3D and 2D visuals. I like the way the drawings are made easy with the inserting of views. I use it on a daily basis and use it intensively. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about Onshape?

When making drawings, it needs to be more like any other CAD software. I guess Onshape is working on that still but it needs some time to get used to. Sometimes the document can be laggy which makes it a bit frustrating to use. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

5/5
What do you like best about Onshape?

Very easy to start using. Cloud system allows me to use in multiple devices. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about Onshape?

Internet connection is, of course, the crucial thing you need. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

"The simplest and smoothest CAD solution for us"
5/5
What do you like best about Onshape?

No bulky local installation and no special workstations required

Integrated parts management, which was previously only possible with complicated PDM systems

Mature versioning and branching

Sophisticated configuration functionality for all possible scenarios and features

The ability to model all related parts within a single part studio - thus safe dimensional changes based on a few basic sketches

Simple sharing of designs and intermediate statuses within the team

Integrated rendering capability (albeit somewhat cryptic compared to specialized external apps, but still useful for quick presentations)

Very simple and well thought-out module for creating drawings

Overall, straight forward work with a fun factor and quick results and successes

Good community that actively participates in development in the form of programmed feature scripts for special cases (welding, cable routing, etc.) that can be loaded into the project

Monthly reports on new features and improvements (what's new after login)

I just love it, Onshape makes me addicted! Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about Onshape?

Still no possibility to place small labels, logos or simple textures on partial surfaces within an assembly (such as stickers in Solidworks). If you want to see something like this, you either have to use the Render Studio or imprint the labeling correctly into the geometry... Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

"Great Cloud based CAD"
5/5
What do you like best about Onshape?

I really like the cloud based approach because I can work on my projects from anywhere with any device, it runs smoothly without any problems. One of the biggest advantages of Onshape is the cloud saving. You never lose any progress if the device is crashing. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about Onshape?

I haven't found any things about Onshape I didn't like. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

"OnShape CAD solution"
5/5
What do you like best about Onshape?

The option to share files and allow others to interact with the created files has been pretty powerful of a development tool. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about Onshape?

The biggest issue I've had with Onshape has been the assembly build and edit option. It is less intuitive than some of the other CAD options I've used but I'm getting it figured out. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you like best about Onshape?

Everything in the one place. Simple to sign in and get going. Never crashes. Share your work. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about Onshape?

The UI is sometimes too lean and therefore things are a little bit hidden at first. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

"Onshape innovation makes CAD work easier"
5/5
What do you like best about Onshape?

The fact that you never lose any work due to constant saving and have the option to restore or make a branch from an earlier stage of work. Next thing being easy to administrate, regarding both software and hardware. Customer support. Collaboration possibilities Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about Onshape?

Do not have auto BOM dimensions of parts. Lacking some basic drawing functionality, like ex. break and section in same view. Lack of integrated 3D sketch. Does not have possibility to export DXF from ASSY parts, need to be located in Part Studio to have this option. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.
