What is Onshape, and what problem is it built to solve?

Onshape is a cloud-based mechanical CAD tool used to create and manage 3D designs. Its collaborative workflow and built-in version history help teams work on shared designs and keep track of changes.

What languages does Onshape support?

Onshape supports 9 languages: Chinese (Simplified), Chinese (Traditional), English, French, German, and others.

What company sizes and industries is Onshape the best fit for?

Onshape is especially relevant to smaller businesses and engineering-focused teams, with users also coming from mid-market and enterprise organizations. The strongest reviewer-reported clusters include these company sizes and industries:
  • Small businesses: The most prominent company-size segment.
  • Mid-market organizations: Also represented across teams using Onshape for product and mechanical design.
  • Mechanical and industrial engineering: A prominent industry group.
  • Manufacturing and industrial automation: Common settings for design and engineering work.
  • Design: Another visible group, including product and industrial design work.

How long does it take to implement Onshape across a team?

Teams report a range of implementation timelines, but getting started in less than a month is the clearest pattern. Some teams are up and running in under a day, while broader rollouts can take longer.
Time to go live Relative frequency
Under 1 month Most common
Under 1 day Common
1–6 months Also reported
6 months or longer Less common

What customer support options does Onshape provide, and how do users find the overall support experience?

Onshape provides support through email/help desk, chat, and self-service resources such as its FAQs, forums, and knowledge base. The support experience is often described as responsive, helpful, and knowledgeable, though some users find replies slower or less complete for specialized questions.

What is the experience like for teams switching to Onshape from another tool?

Switching to Onshape is often driven by a need for better collaboration, simpler version and file management, and less dependence on local hardware or IT maintenance. Teams moving from desktop CAD and PDM tools—including SolidWorks and other established CAD systems—describe gaining shared, current design data and easier remote access. The new workflow can take some adjustment, particularly around unfamiliar modeling and assembly methods, and transferring legacy design history may require extra work.

What features or capabilities could make Onshape even more useful?

Onshape could be more useful for teams whose work depends on detailed drawings or specialized modeling and manufacturing workflows. The recurring improvement areas include:
  • Expand drawing tools, including editing, annotation, dimensioning, and templates.
  • Strengthen advanced modeling, especially surfacing and 3D sketching.
  • Develop more capable integrated CAM and simulation workflows.
  • Add offline or limited-access functionality for times when an internet connection is unavailable.

"Great for collaborators"
5/5
What do you like best about Onshape?

The ease of working together on a single document. It is simple to share work with outside vendors too. Product support has been great; I can email Kyle about any of my questions. Implementing new ideas is a breeze. The feature set keeps improving, especially from feedback. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about Onshape?

The main downside is the speed of Onshape. Since it is in the cloud, the performance is not as snappy as a local CAD system like SolidWorks. This is mainly seen in assemblies. The second downside is part of its feature: Documents. Documents can get bogged down very quickly with part studios and assemblies and derived parts. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you like best about Onshape?

The cloud platform. Takes our IT headaches away and allows us to work outside of our IT departments abilities to support us. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about Onshape?

Still missing a few features that would help us in drawings and parts but there are ways to get around them for us. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

"Onshape user review about good and need to improvement features."
5/5
What do you like best about Onshape?

Pros:

I like the Sketcher tools, part design mode very much user friendly. And importing and editing features are nice.

In Context mode is very useful.

Seamless operation because of cloud platform.

Customer support is good.

Regularly using for our product design activities.

Exporting option is very nice, since it is able to export to all different formats to integrate with other software.

Very easy to adapt and implement and use in any organization which is having very limited and not sophisticated Modeling and R&D Activities. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about Onshape?

Cons:

Assembly features need to be improved. Cannot rely on Mate connector for all operations. Derived feature operation is not comfortable as in Creo's Inheritance and Merge. Assembly mirror feature needs to be added, instead of struggling with mate connector mirroring.

Not very much confident to use for large assembly.

Error list and resolving tips are not there. Only showing failed features is not useful.

Cabling and wire harnessing is very difficult to use and not user-friendly. Need clear menus, and specifications built into use. Does not seem proficient with Feature script.

Piping tools are there or not?

Drawing: Need auto dimensioning like Creo. BOM Balloon creation needs to be user-friendly. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

"Great CAD tool in the cloud!"
4.5/5
What do you like best about Onshape?

It is online, always up to date (no version issues), completely back traceable and has built in PDM. I can use it on any platform (phone, tablet, laptop, PC) and it does not require a CAD computer. Easy to log in from practically anything with a browser. I never had it crash.

I like the features a lot. Especially the custom features can be real time savers!

Version control is very good, branching a part into a different part to test a different idea is really easy and straightforward. Do you like it? Merge it into the main. Is it a dead end, close it off and continue with the main branch. GitHub like version management.

Surfacing is very good, but I still need to train myself even more in it. Good training videos and training tutorials available.

I have used Onshape daily for about 2 years.

Easy to give other people read access, read write access, and be able to take it away when necessary. You OWN your data. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about Onshape?

Large assemblies, for example STEP files, can take quite some time to import Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

"That's how CAD data management has to be done"
5/5
What do you like best about Onshape?

Onshape's architecture specialises in creating dependencies and references between different components of an assembly. This makes a lot of sense, because in practice every assembly has parts that have to fit together. What is always complicated and time-consuming to plan with file-based systems can be done in no time at all with Onshape. As the data is consistently stored in the cloud single source of truth, the references are never lost.

Agile development with different variants and versions is child's play. A new version for an entire assembly, including drawings, is created in just a few seconds. Data is never lost and you can always go back to an old version. Onshape excels in the way it handles CAD data and can be seen as a prime example of the advantages of cloud applications, even outside of CAD applications (why doesn't MS Office work in the same way?). Did I already talk about updates? No need to worry about this anymore. All Onshape users are on the same page and data is always compatible for real time collaboration.

We users have adapted to deal with the problems of classic CAD data in the past. These days are over fortunately. Onshape impressively solves many of these pain points and shows a bright future for CAD work. This is just the beginning. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about Onshape?

Onshape now has a very good range of functions. However, certain detailed functions still lack the functionality required to keep up with the long-standing leaders in the CAD industry. However, with the many automatic updates, Onshape is quickly catching up and is also suitable for professional use in many areas of product development.

For many external partners who are not familiar with Onshape, online collaboration is still unfamiliar and they ask if I can send the data as an STP file by e-mail. This is not Onshape's fault, but it does take some patience and persuasion to realise the full potential of the cloud. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

"Essential cloud software that I use every day"
5/5
What do you like best about Onshape?

Cloud computing means you don't have to worry about hardware or backing up your data. Before moving to Onshape I used other software for about 15 years and was content in my ignorance. Onshape makes creating drawings and models even easier and the way you can communicate these to your client/customer/collegues is seamless. Over the years I've reccommended the platform to many companies and home enthusiats and we all love using it. The onboarding courses are available to all making transferring really easy. My 12 year old has even done one of the courses to help her with 3D printing at school. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about Onshape?

As Onshape has grown its become more corporate and the personal touch isn't there anymore. Back in the day you were always talking to the same sales people and tech support people. The price of success but its only a minor thing. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.
