## About Mergin Maps
Mergin Maps is a field data collection tool built on the free and open-source QGIS which allows you to collect, store and synchronise your data with your team. It removes the pain of writing down paper notes, georeferencing photos and transcribing GPS coordinates. With Mergin Maps, you can get your QGIS projects into the mobile app, collect data and synchronise it back on the server. Setting up your project with Mergin Maps only takes a few minutes. First, create your survey project in QGIS, then connect it to Mergin Maps with a plugin and synchronise it with the mobile app to start collecting in the field. The data you capture in the field survey is shown on a map and can be exported to a wide variety of formats including CSV, Microsoft Excel, ESRI Shapefile, Mapinfo, GeoPackage, PostGIS, AutoCAD DXF, and KML. Mergin Maps allows you to do live position tracking, fill out survey forms and capture and edit points, lines or polygons. You can also connect external GPS/GNSS devices via Bluetooth for high-precision surveying. Map layers look the same as in QGIS desktop so you can set your layer symbology how you want it on the desktop and it will appear that way on your mobile device. Mergin Maps supports offline field data capture for situations where a data connection is unavailable. It can be configured to use either offline or web-based background maps and contextual layers. Perks of the Mergin Maps sync system: - No need for cables to get your data on/off your device - Share projects with others for collaborative working, even offline - Updates from different surveyors are intelligently merged - Push data back from the field in real time - Version history and cloud-based backup - Fine-grained access control - Record metadata such as EXIF, GPS and external GNSS device information - Sync with your PostGIS datasets and external media storage such as S3 and MinIO Supported field types for forms are: - Text (single or multi-line) - Numeric (plain, with +/- buttons or with slider) - Date / time (with calendar picker) - Photo - Checkbox (yes/no values) - Drop-down with predefined values - Drop-down with values from another table

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Simon S. | GIS-trainer, soil scientist, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** October 16, 2025

**What do you like best about Mergin Maps?**

Mergin Maps is a very userfriendly mobile software for various topics of field work. We use Mergin Maps very frequently in our trainings and capture geoobjects at construction sites. We like the clear user interface very much and get the feedback from our costumers, that Mergin Maps is very easy to learn. The setup of a project is easy and quick. The sync process is comprehensive. The app is easy to understand and good to use.
We're in contact with the team of Mergin Maps very regularly and get usually perfect costumer support. The youtube-channel and the updates on the app via video are brilliant.

**What do you dislike about Mergin Maps?**

It would be great if more low-budget rtk-decives for Mergin Maps and IOS would be available. That would increase the implementation in the field a lot. Hopefully, some updates will resolve this issue in the future.

**What problems is Mergin Maps solving and how is that benefiting you?**

- capturing data in the field
- broaden the capabilities of QGIS
- easy to access data in the field

**Reviewed Date:** August 01, 2025

**What do you like best about Mergin Maps?**

Mergin Maps has been an essential tool in our university training and community projects. It’s incredibly easy to use, even for students new to GIS, and the setup is quick and smooth. The integration with QGIS is seamless, making data collection and syncing between devices effortless. We use it frequently for mapping, and it keeps proving its versatility through practical features like offline access and real-time syncing. On top of that, the customer support is responsive and helpful, especially for educators and local implementers.

**What do you dislike about Mergin Maps?**

While Mergin Maps is incredibly useful, the storage limitations on the free plan can be a challenge, especially when working with students on large datasets. These are minor issues compared to the overall value it offers.

**What problems is Mergin Maps solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Mergin Maps solves the challenge of efficient, offline field data collection and collaboration, especially in Tanzania rural areas. It eliminates the need for complex setups or manual data transfers, allowing students and teams to collect, sync, and analyze spatial data seamlessly. That concept of "carrying QGIS to your pockets" really does work here. This has made our organization's university training programs more practical and impactful, while improving data quality and project turnaround time.

The ability to develop data collection projects, which multiple users can use in the field while ensuring data synchronization. Further, the tool provides a streamlined integration between mobile devices and QGIS at the office. Setting up Mergin Maps projects in QGIS is easy, taking advantage of all the options in QGIS regarding 'Form' layout and design for data collection. Finally, the development team and the user community are active, allowing for efficient service development. Customer support is also fast!

**What do you dislike about Mergin Maps?**

I don't dislike anything in particular. What I see is a lot of potential for improvements, which is being actively developed with the input of its users! This is fundamental to developing a solid, stable, and valuable tool.

**What problems is Mergin Maps solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Mergin Maps allows me to produce a data collection tool that our research team can use to collect environmental data in the field, enabling multiple users to provide inputs from different locations, and ensuring data synchronization between them. ### 18. Intuitive GIS platform for new students

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Higher Education | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** September 03, 2024

**What do you like best about Mergin Maps?**

This software is an inuitive option to gather GIS data with students new to GIS. They offer free educational accounts , and we are able to collaborate on assignments fairly easily. The app works great with QGIS.

**What do you dislike about Mergin Maps?**

While the program offers different roles (Editor, Reader, Owner), there is no role for a Contributor: someone who can add their own data and download the project, but is unable to remove data from others or change symbology. Additionally, the app is very easy to collect photos with, but the space they give to educational accounts can only hold about 20 photos. I would like an option to archive these, or compress them, to add to the project later.

**What problems is Mergin Maps solving and how is that benefiting you?**

When I teach GIS, I want my students to be able to easily gather data according to government standards here in Norway. Mergin Maps allows me to easily upload code values and standard fields into the app so that the students can easily record new data for projects we work on together in class.

**Reviewed by:** Sarah J. | Principal Ecologist and Company Director, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** June 05, 2024

**What do you like best about Mergin Maps?**

I use it for point data when collecting ecological data in the field and for habitat mapping. Easy to use in the field once you crreate the correct attribute forms prior to field trips and then cuts down on data processing back in the office.

**What do you dislike about Mergin Maps?**

I would love to see (and am waiting for) being able to use a stylus to draw freehand polylines in the field app e.g. in my case, bird flightlines across a proposed wind farm site. This would be a huge advantage for my company and I believe many others in my field. I hope it can be rolled out very soon.
