# Shopify vs BigCommerce vs WooCommerce for a brand hitting $2M in revenue and outgrowing their current setup?

I've been putting together a piece on ecommerce platforms for brands at a specific inflection point, and Shopify vs BigCommerce vs WooCommerce for a brand hitting $2M in revenue and outgrowing their current setup is the comparison I keep getting asked about without ever finding a useful practitioner answer. At $2M you're past the point where "just use Shopify" is the whole answer, but you're not in enterprise territory yet. The real questions are about fees compounding, which features actually matter at this scale, and what the migration looks like in practice.

From reviews and what I've found in researching this:

Shopify: Brands switching from WooCommerce describe cutting admin time significantly and picking up SEO improvements immediately. The friction at $2M is usually the fee model: transaction fees plus app costs compound in a way that wasn't visible at lower volume. At what revenue point does the math tip toward Shopify Plus or away from Shopify entirely?

BigCommerce: No transaction fees regardless of payment processor, which is a real number at $2M. Native multi-channel without the app tax. The learning curve is steeper than Shopify though. Is that tradeoff worth it for an ops team that's already stretched?

WooCommerce: Zero platform fees and full code ownership. The counterpoint at $2M is that hosting, security, and plugin maintenance start consuming engineering time that could go toward growth. Is there a point where the freedom genuinely wins, or does the overhead always close the gap?

Also worth considering Shopify Plus if the growth trajectory is steep: mid-market reviewers describe it handling multi-channel complexity that core Shopify starts showing cracks on. And Adobe Commerce if the catalogue is genuinely complex beyond what any hosted platform handles.

Which platform did you migrate to at this revenue stage, and what was the thing your old setup couldn't do anymore? I'd love the honest version.

One way to cut this: the fee models differ less in total cost than in predictability. Transaction fees are visible and linear, annoying but forecastable. Self-hosted overhead is invisible and lumpy, arriving as a plugin conflict the week before Black Friday rather than a line item. Which makes the real question at $2M whether the brand has engineering capacity sitting idle. If not, the "free" option is the one with the least predictable price.
