More important: When medication orders expire, the notification to the doctor is so subtle that it's easy to miss--in our institution, several patients have suffered permanent harm because the system automatically stopped essential medication in ways the doctor couldn't notice, then the patients stopped receiving the medication, and then the patient suffered (in more than one case) permanent harm. **What problems is Meditech Expanse solving and how is that benefiting you?** One good thing: It's quick to write a note. (Of course, if you don't write an "assessment," it's a terrible note, but it makes it quicker to write.) ### 3. Easy to get to any task within a few clicks. Can be logged on to multiple work stations around the lab which is great for efficiency. This is a hospital-wide used software system that is the same in all departments. **What do you dislike about Meditech Expanse?** I don't like the same thing with all technology is that there are often times glitches or downtime that cause errors to arise. I don't like that sometimes there are users that are able to access certain information, but then it isn't available for others. It is always a hassle to go through the process of gaining access to information when you are moving to another position or gaining privileges. **Recommendations to others considering Meditech Expanse:** I would recommend to enhance the software system to alert users when they are in the patient's chart that has a similar name or birthday to another patient that could be easily confused. **What problems is Meditech Expanse solving and how is that benefiting you?** I have realized that meditech ehr does help with the time spent when treating patients it makes records much faster and easier to navigate to ensure that they get the best care possible in the right amount of time. ### 8. Easy to locates physician notes. Pretty easy to document, they do have a copy and paste feature. **What do you dislike about Meditech Expanse?** It is not as comprehensive for charting as other systems are. It has strict pre-filled options when often times what you need to chart does not fall under those descriptors. There are nurse double checks for unnecessary things that cause some wasted time. The task list is the worst. In order to find more sections that you need to document on, you have to "add" them to the task list. And nothing flows between sections. Some areas will ask the same documentation questions, and even if you have already filled it out somewhere else, you have to duplicate documentation. **Recommendations to others considering Meditech Expanse:** If you can afford it, use EPIC. or if not, Cerner as second choice **What problems is Meditech Expanse solving and how is that benefiting you?** Being able to document on patients as we care for them. I also dislike that sometimes the refresh is very glitchy as it’s based on a website. It is very easy to identify mistakes and many times the software will correct you so that a mistake won’t be made in the first place. It doesn't take long to chart nursing assessments once you have learned the format. **What do you dislike about Meditech Expanse?** The number of different parts to click through before charting something is extensive. It takes too long to get back and forth between the main screen overview and the charting subsections. Limited flow while charting different things like I&Os and lines/drains/tubes. Once items are charted, it is difficult to see everything in one place. **What problems is Meditech Expanse solving and how is that benefiting you?** It allows me to give healthcare with electronic charting. I'm sure a great deal of population data can be drawn from it. However, I don't find that Meditech stands out as having an extraordinary capacity to solve problems. ### 15. The flow between tabs in the patient note while charting is logical and makes it easy for scribes to chart as well. **What do you dislike about Meditech Expanse?** No option to auto-populate presets and no 'dot phrase' feature severely limits functionality, these limitations have to be overcome with additional software such as Dragon or other dictation software. **What problems is Meditech Expanse solving and how is that benefiting you?** Not so much solving problems with the software, rather this is the means for charting patient-related documentation. ### 16. Although it took awhile to learn, once it was, it allowed much more efficiency when process/receiving labs, to enter results, to batch out send out specimen, and look up mnemonics for different lab tests, etc. For very routine tasks, it was definitely quicker than when the lab switched to sunquest. **What do you dislike about Meditech Expanse?** It took awhile to get used to after using "higher-tech" computer programs because of the very basic functionality. It required learning and memorizing specific functions and codes, while using less "user-friendly" accessibility. Also, although the look-ups tools were easily accessible, there were certain things, such as: not being able to go back on certain screens, less options from one screen, and not having full knowledge and easily readable options for each given function/mode you're in. **Recommendations to others considering Meditech Expanse:** Have a good training program because if you learn all the functions it will definitely make the experience simpler and give out more efficient results. **What problems is Meditech Expanse solving and how is that benefiting you?** We used Meditech in our hospital lab for both in-patient and out-patient lab functions, such as: resulting, reviewing, receiving, sending, defining, and much more. ### 29. It is so much easier to use and customize. I find I spend way less time charting and more time actually with the patient now. I hope that this is just a temporary glitch since it is new. I find my screen will freeze all of the time. System has more functions than anyone really realizes, also minimizing the need to call nurses or providers to obtain certain information about the patients. Very easy access to physician and nurses’ progress notes, enabling pharmacists to determine specific indications of drug treatments, leading to optimization of the treatments especially for per-pharmacy protocol treatments. Any necessary changes are also easily made in the system. For example, a message can be generated to the MD ordering a backordered drug, informing the MD to order an alternative drug or call pharmacy for recommendations.
