## About GeoHECHMS
GeoHECHMS speeds up watershed modeling by automating subbasin delineation, Curve Numbers, and Time of Concentration calculations. As an advanced data wrapper to industry-standard HEC-HMS, it simplifies workflows and accelerates common hydrologic preprocessing tasks needed for HEC-HMS modeling. Engineers use its AutoCAD-compatible interface to pull land use and soil data, compute TR 55/TR-20 parameters and simplify pre- and post-development scenarios for seamless detention/retention pond design. The software supports multiple rainfall distributions and routing methods, such as Muskingum, Kinematic Wave, Modified Puls, and Snyder Unit Hydrograph. Both US and metric (SI) units are supported, making GeoHECHMS a powerful solution for accurate watershed modeling and hydrologic analysis.

## GeoHECHMS Reviews
  ### 1. ArcGIS-Like Interface, Fast Automation, and Responsive Support

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Jared H. | Manager of development engineering, Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** May 29, 2026

**What do you like best about GeoHECHMS?**

I like how easily I can pull the data and how it is integrated with the arcgis type of interface. The automation really helps speed the process up and eliminate errors. For the cost of the software, it can usually be justified within 1 hydrology model. The support and onboarding was very responsive too as they are more than willing to walk you through an entire model using your data.

**What do you dislike about GeoHECHMS?**

Due to the amount of data, the system takes a long time to run larger models and tends to run into errors more often. At least there is the option to save the data if you encounter an error.

**What problems is GeoHECHMS solving and how is that benefiting you?**

hechms helps us evaluate projects earlier on and determine the flood risk across an area. The intelligence of the software makes it more user friendly and quicker.

  ### 2. Streamlining Watershed Modeling with GeoHECHMS

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Seth M. | Civil Engineer, Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** April 24, 2026

**What do you like best about GeoHECHMS?**

What I like best about GeoHECHMS is how seamlessly it integrates GIS data with hydrologic modeling. It takes what used to be a fragmented, manual process and turns it into a streamlined, intuitive workflow. Delineating watersheds, defining subbasins, and building models all feel connected and efficient instead of tedious.

I also really appreciate how much time it saves without sacrificing accuracy. The automation and built-in tools handle a lot of the heavy lifting, which allows me to focus more on engineering judgment and less on repetitive setup tasks.

Overall, it’s the combination of efficiency, clarity, and real-world practicality that stands out most—it genuinely makes complex hydrologic modeling easier and more reliable.

**What do you dislike about GeoHECHMS?**

One minor downside to GeoHECHMS is that, like most powerful modeling tools, there can be a bit of a learning curve when you’re first getting started—especially if you’re new to GIS-integrated workflows. Some of the more advanced features and settings take a little time to fully understand.

That said, once you get familiar with the interface and workflow, it becomes very efficient and intuitive, so the upfront effort pays off quickly.

**What problems is GeoHECHMS solving and how is that benefiting you?**

GeoHECHMS is solving one of the biggest challenges in hydrologic modeling—bridging the gap between GIS data and a fully built, reliable model. Instead of spending hours manually delineating basins, transferring data, and double-checking inputs across multiple platforms, it brings everything into a single, cohesive workflow.

For me, that means significantly reducing the time and effort required to set up models while also minimizing the potential for errors. It handles a lot of the repetitive and detail-heavy tasks, which improves consistency across projects and gives me greater confidence in the results.

It’s also helping with efficiency under tight deadlines. I can move from raw terrain data to a functioning model much faster, iterate more easily when conditions change, and spend more time focusing on analysis and design rather than setup.

Overall, the benefit is a more streamlined process, better-quality deliverables, and the ability to take on more work without sacrificing accuracy or reliability.

**Official Response from Sara Presta:**

  ### 3. Software Integration/Technical Support

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Eric H. | Engineer in Training, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** August 07, 2024

**What do you like best about GeoHECHMS?**

I have just recently started to use GeoHMS daily again since last year and havent noticed many updates or differences. Overall i love this software and we really pushed the higher ups to renew the license becasue it is so helpful. There are some smaller elements that i think could make the software even stronger and help user workflow.

**What do you dislike about GeoHECHMS?**

-A lock or read-only mode for supplied model elements would be helpful for regulatory workflows--especially when we only want to add or isolate certain features without changing the approved hydrology that is not impacted by the updates.

-Make calculation assumptions clearer and allow options. For example, when calculating TCs the hydraulic radius is assumed. However, some cities prefer velocities for channelized flow to be assumed. In the report feature include more detailed calculations so it is easier to implement in the submitted report. Or possibly allow an option to generate a well-structured TC and CN excel sheet that includes detailed calculations.

-For CN calcs include the basin name in the attribute table for the intermediate results shapefile. This way if we need to merge all of them together in GIS they still can be categorized by the basin

-Allow for several terrain layering for tcs etc. For example if we have multiple terrains and want one terrain read for part of the tc and a different one for a seperate portion.

-The report feature is very beneficial however i think AI could be implemented to help improve the context, structure, calculations, etc. This will help the user better incorporate the hydrology model and its parameters in their overall drainage report that is to be submitted.

-Allow better control of what component is being selected. Right now, if i have the HMS model on and add a cad file or other shapefiles i cannot select them while the hms model is on.

-In HEC-RAS there is a tool that allows the user to compare geometries and points out any differences. This would be beneficial in GeoHMS

-Before running the model if there are elements with no downstream connection add a pop up before running prompting the user to confirm before running. There have been times when working with large models that i have gone through several iterations and then find out that one junction is missing a connection.

**What problems is GeoHECHMS solving and how is that benefiting you?**

OvOverall, GeoHECHMS significantly reduces time and increases efficiency by eliminating the need to use multiple software programs. The software's unique capabilities streamline processes, leading to substantial cost savings. One example, GeoHECHMS simplifies river routing by automatically creating and assigning 8-point cross sections to your reaches. Previously, this would require creating these sections in GIS or Civil 3D, manually assigning the points, and then inputting them into HECHMS for each reach. GeoHECHMS automates this entire process, saving both time and effort.

**Official Response from Sara Presta:**

> Hi Eric,

Thank you very much for sharing your review. Your feedback helps us create high-performing software, so never hesitate to let us know what we’re doing right—or how we can improve!

**What do you like best about GeoHECHMS?**

I appreciate how easy it is to use, and I like that the program’s functions are straightforward and simple to manipulate.

**What do you dislike about GeoHECHMS?**

Sometimes, when we run an analysis, the integration between GeoHECHMS and HECHMS doesn’t work smoothly because we run our programs on our office servers rather than on the local network. As a result, we occasionally have to fall back on using HECHMS alone for parts of the analysis instead.

**What problems is GeoHECHMS solving and how is that benefiting you?**

It helps us identify problem areas within our project, particularly with regard to the model, and it paints a clear picture of the results versus the standard HECHMS.

  ### 8. GeoHECHMS: Intuitive, Fast, and Easy for Hydrological Studies

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Ryan O. | Assistant Project Manager in Water Resources, Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** November 03, 2025

**What do you like best about GeoHECHMS?**

GeoHECHMS has taken our typical Hydrological Drainage Studies and amplified the speed with which we can complete them. The User Interface makes it quick and easy to work with and is extremely intuitive towards new employees learning the program. We are able to implement it quickly and easily into the majority of our work. My favorite part of the program is the ease of delineating large scale watershed subbasins that can be refined to smaller acreage if you are looking for a more detailed study of larger scale watersheds.

**What do you dislike about GeoHECHMS?**

There really is not much to dislike. If I would have one recommendation, it would be that they push updates quite often and it can be cumbersome when one employee working on a project is on a later version from the week before and has to update to work in the current version weekly.

**What problems is GeoHECHMS solving and how is that benefiting you?**

GeoHECHMS is our primary modeling program when analyzing watersheds. Typically, we utilize the program to delineate subbasins and gather hydrological data that is necessary to implement into our hydraulic modeling, such as the results hydrographs the program gives us. We also use the program to run our dam breach analysis for dams that breach at level pool. The program makes it easy to organize the many different scenarios that are necessary for dam breach analysis.

  ### 11. Revolutionizes Watershed Analysis with Powerful GIS Integration

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Civil Engineering | Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** December 11, 2025

**What do you like best about GeoHECHMS?**

GeoHEC-HMS makes it easier to analyze watersheds using spatial data through leveraging GIS capabilities on top of HEC-HMS. It allows automatic watershed delineation from elevation models, integrates land use and soil data, and provides map-based visualization for better accuracy and interpretation. This integration improves runoff and flood predictions, simplifies data management, and supports scenario analysis for projects like stormwater planning and flood risk assessment.

**What do you dislike about GeoHECHMS?**

GeoHEC-HMS has some disadvantages, such as a steep learning curve because it requires both GIS and hydrologic modeling skills. It also depends on high-quality spatial data, which may not always be available, and setting up and calibrating models can be time-consuming. Additionally, it often needs powerful hardware and, if used with commercial GIS software, can involve extra licensing costs.

**What problems is GeoHECHMS solving and how is that benefiting you?**

The integration of GIS in GeoHEC-HMS is a major benefit for us as it allows hydrologic models to use real-world spatial data for greater accuracy and efficiency. With GIS tools, you can automatically delineate watersheds from elevation data, assign land use and soil properties to sub-basins, and visualize hydrologic elements on a map. This spatial approach ensures that runoff calculations reflect actual terrain and land characteristics, making predictions more reliable. It also simplifies data management by directly importing GIS layers, reducing manual input and errors, and enabling quick scenario analysis for changes in land use or rainfall patterns.

  ### 20. Effortless Hydrology Modeling with GeoHECHMS

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Civil Engineering | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** December 04, 2025

**What do you like best about GeoHECHMS?**

CivilGEO’s GeoHECHMS has been great to use. The layout is clear, the tools make sense, and it takes a lot of the hassle out of building and updating HEC-HMS models. It runs smoothly and genuinely saves time on projects. Overall, a solid, user-friendly bit of software that makes hydrology work easier. Excellent customer support and constant updates to improve the software.

**What do you dislike about GeoHECHMS?**

Reaches are sometimes inaccurate on a design surface created with a very small cell size.

**What problems is GeoHECHMS solving and how is that benefiting you?**

GeoHECHMS has been great for simplifying catchment modelling, speeding up flow calculations, and quickly testing detention pond outlet designs. It takes the hassle out of the usual manual setup and makes iterating different scenarios much easier

  ### 21. Fabulous

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Consulting | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** September 17, 2025

**What do you like best about GeoHECHMS?**

Can model both natural and urbanized watersheds. Supports mixed development watershed conditions.

Highly modular architecture allows for easy integration of hydrologic modeling needs and graphical Environment
Includes a user-friendly Watershed map visualization, data entry utilities. Its advanced Hydrologic Capabilities
Supports a wide range of hydrologic processes:
Infiltration (e.g., SCS Curve Number, Green)
Evapotranspiration, Baseflow and Channel Routing. We Can Add storge Capacity, Nodes, and

In Addition to its Interoperability, it works with other HEC software i.e., HEC-RAS). and uses data storage and retrieval, enabling integration with other hydrologic and hydraulic H&H models.

**What do you dislike about GeoHECHMS?**

All models in HEC-HMS are deterministic, they assume exact knowledge of initial and boundary conditions.
This can limit realism in scenarios where uncertainty or probabilistic behavior is important.

Parameters are assumed to be time-stationary, they don’t change over time.
Simplified Flow Representation and it does not support complex networks in urban engineering systems. lack of advance urban pipe network features creates redundancies and uncertainties. For long simulations, parameters must be manually adjusted between segments. this creates time consuming issues.

**What problems is GeoHECHMS solving and how is that benefiting you?**

we use it for a variety of H&H drainage systems different projects roadway, bridge analysis, and development

**Official Response from Sara Presta:**

> Hello,

  ### 36. GeoHECHMS Saves Time and Money (Update 2024)

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Armando M. | Project Manager, Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** August 30, 2022

**What do you like best about GeoHECHMS?**

I like the software. It streamlines the analysis and design by having a better user interface than HEC-HMS and it is much easier to extract tables for reports and exhibits. I have used it to design detention basins and for hydrology for floodplain analysis. It does the same thing as HEC-HMS but saves me time during analysis and design which is the main reason I like it. Another good thing is that CivilGEO tech support will get to you the same day when you submit a question. I don’t think I have waited more than 30 minutes for a call.

(Update) After years of using GeoHECHMS the sofware continues to be a benefit to our company. It has especially come in handy when working on models that cover watersheds hundreds of square miles in size due to the spead of navigation, the map backgrounds available, and being able to import shp and AutoCAD files. Customer support has continued to be excellent. Also, if you have a recommendation for a feature or results output that will be of benefit CivilGEO will add it.

**What do you dislike about GeoHECHMS?**

Like all new software, there are bugs that need to be worked out. Units shown on results tables sometimes are not what I am accustomed to seeing but that is easily fixed by contacting tech support. No major dislikes.

(Update) The bugs we have reported have been fixed and I can't tink of anything I dislike.

**What problems is GeoHECHMS solving and how is that benefiting you?**

It streamlines the hydrologic analysis by making HMS used friendly and allowing the creation of output and input tables to put in the reports that are submitted to reviewing agencies.

(Update) GeoHECHMS has helped when working on very large watersheds by speeding up the navigation within the model and any modifications to the model.

**Official Response from Sara Presta:**

> Hi Armando,

Thank you for taking the time to share your review; your comments certainly made our day! We're thrilled to learn how you are improving your engineering projects and work processes with GeoHECHMS. It is extremely gratifying to know that GeoHECHMS meets your needs and helps you achieve your goals.

  ### 37. Geo-HEC-HMS (GHH)

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Kiarash E. | Project Engineer, Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** February 22, 2024

**What do you like best about GeoHECHMS?**

Compared to the original HEC-GeoHMS software, GHH offers significant improvements in both user-friendliness and computational speed. This enhanced user experience has streamlined my workflow, while the faster processing times allow for quicker analysis. Additionally, CivilGeo's consistently responsive and helpful technical support team has been invaluable in addressing any questions or issues that have arisen during my use of the software.

**What do you dislike about GeoHECHMS?**

Civil Geo is a relatively small and new company compared to the giants of the industry (like ESRI, AutoDesk, etc.) , so the software packages are still not as flawless as them. However, they seem to be on the right track with frequent updates.
Update: They still have been continuously improvming the software in the past two year. Recently I have been using this software more than the orginal HEC-HMS.

**What problems is GeoHECHMS solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Delineate drainage areas, calculate hydrologic characteristics (time of connection and curve number tools are pretty advanced), and create hydrologic model automatically.
Update: Their time of connection tool has new features used for calculating Tc of more complicated systems. Their reservoir curve calculation toolset is a nice addition as well

**Official Response from Sara Presta:**

  ### 42. Excellent software that really speeds up efficiency

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Liz I. | Senior Engineer, Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** August 16, 2023

**What do you like best about GeoHECHMS?**

I really like the built-in functions such as automated curve number calculations and watershed and sub-basin delineation. In the past these would take hours to compile all the data. Now it can be done in one click of a button - the data is already pre-loaded into the software. Time of concentration calculations are also so much faster to complete. It's really easy to break off different segments and assign different flow types as well as land use. Another huge benefit is PMO/PMF analysis. No more looking at HMR 51/52 tables. Click the centroid of your watershed and the depth/duration tables will be loaded for you. I find the software user friendly and pretty easy to pick up, especially if you 've already used other hydrologic software. You can also directly export the project to HEC-HMS.

I use this software now for basically every project that requires a hydrologic input. There's almost no reason to start a project from HEC-HMS directly when there are so many tools built into GeoHEC-HMS. Also, the customer support is 10/10. Anytime I have had an issue, there has been a tech ready and willing to help walk me through any troubleshooting, even if it's not directly related to the software. They are super knowledgeable about modeling as well and are willing to offer different approaches based on your specific location and modeling needs. They will always follow up with you as well to make sure that the software is working as intended and are willing to incorporate suggestions you have to make the program even better for the user.

**What do you dislike about GeoHECHMS?**

There are a few small bugs with the software that are not deal-breakers (I still really like the software and will continue to use it), but the issue is that if someone who doens't know hydroogy well is using the program, they may think the model is running fine when in reality it isn't. For example, I have noticed with Curve Numbers that the program defualts to 25% impervious area. If you have already accounted for IA in your CN you need to make this 0%. Then when you export to HEC-HMS the 25% is back in the model again. If you aren't aware of this or aren't paying close attention, this would be easy to overlook.

**What problems is GeoHECHMS solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Watershed delineation and assigning hydrologic parameters for different flow events. PMP/PMF analysis. I can get models up and running in record time with the awesome built in functions that GeoHMS provides. It's a very functional and powerful software.

**Reviewed Date:** September 10, 2024

**What do you like best about GeoHECHMS?**

The ability to use various overlays (impervious surface, soils, DEM data, etc) is extremely helpful as this is available within the software without hunting around the internet or digging though company server files for the correct overlay. The customer service is helpful, as they can push updates quickly to resovle issues.

**What do you dislike about GeoHECHMS?**

The initial cost is something to consider, but the annual renewal fee is only a fraction of the cost. This is easily offset by the quick response of the help team and the services and training offered.

**What problems is GeoHECHMS solving and how is that benefiting you?**

The abilaity to quickly map watersheds within the software and the automated calculations are extemely helpful. We have seen a siginifcant reduction in labor hours for project work when using this software.

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Civil Engineering | Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** February 01, 2023

**What do you like best about GeoHECHMS?**

GeoHECHMS successfully integrates GIS tools, traditional HEC-HMS algorithms and other web-based databases (USGS, FEMA, USDA etc.). I like the user interface it offers. GeoHECHMS is one of the best hydrologic modeling software I have experienced. Compared to the conventional HECHMS and other watershed modeling packages, it is more friendly to new learners.

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Civil Engineering | Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** September 12, 2024

**What do you like best about GeoHECHMS?**

GeoHEC-HMS excels in providing a robust platform for simulating the hydrological processes of watersheds. Its ability to model various hydrological components, from rainfall-runoff to snowmelt, makes it a super useful tool. The software's versatility and comprehensive range of modeling options, such as infiltration, unit hydrograph, and routing has made it an ideal software for complex projects. Additionally, the customer service and support provided with the subscription have been excellent. Any issues or questions have been promptly addressed by knowledgeable staff.

**What do you dislike about GeoHECHMS?**

While GeoHEC-HMS is a powerful tool, it does have a few minor drawbacks. The software tends to slow down when handling larger datasets, which can be frustrating during extensive projects. Additionally, there have been occasional glitches where the software modifies data unexpectedly when saving work. These issues are relatively infrequent but can disrupt workflow. Despite these kinks, GeoHEC-HMS remains a highly effective and valuable tool for hydrological modeling.

  ### 48. GeoHECHMS - The easy way to use HEC-HMS

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Mark L. | New Business and Engineering Develpment , Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** June 11, 2024

**What do you like best about GeoHECHMS?**

GeoHECHMS is a huge timesaver. It automates many of the features within HEC-HMS. It's hard to imaging determining a NRCS (SCS) curve number (CN) in a matter of minutes, no matter the size of the watershed. But it does! Or checking hundreds of time-of-concentration routes in a watershed to determine the longest flow path in seconds. But it does! It automatically determines the impervious area, vegetative cover, watershed slope, and so much more. Hey, it even determines the watershed limits and breaks it down into sub-watersheds of maximum sizes if you want. It processes LiDAR and creates contour maps. What do I like best? I would say the most unbelievable part is it writes a complete report for you and creates the index - no lie! It's a huge timesaver that is unbelievable. But, their technical support is second to none. They have well qualified engineers answer your request within minutes most of the time.

**What do you dislike about GeoHECHMS?**

There is nothing I dislike about this software.

**What problems is GeoHECHMS solving and how is that benefiting you?**

The software covers all the bases in determining flows for the most complex watersheds.

**Official Response from Sara Presta:**

> Hi Mark, thank you for taking the time to share your review; your comments certainly made our day! We're thrilled to learn how you are improving your engineering projects and work processes with GeoHECHMS. It is extremely gratifying to know that GeoHECHMS meets your needs and helps you achieve your goals. Please let us know if there is anything else we can do to assist you. We value our customers and look forward to working with you in the future. Thank you!

  ### 50. A beautiful blend of software that provides a time saving experience.

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Civil Engineering | Small-Business (50 or fewer emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** July 24, 2024

**What do you like best about GeoHECHMS?**

GeoHECHMS imports data from a variety of sources quickly and seamlessly, integrating them into a very accurate model. Thus, providing a user-friendly model that precisely calculates the necessary data, and allows the user to easily design their system. The tools within the software are intuitively easy to implement. All of this saves the user vast amounts of time, especially when compared to the use of multiple programs to perform the same tasks. This software is now our go to for all of our stormwater design projects.

GeoHECHMS's customer service is the best I have had the pleasure of dealing with. They are prompt to respond, and are able to swiftly fix any model errors.

**What do you dislike about GeoHECHMS?**

Most of the error messages clearly state exactly what the error is and where to fix it within your model. But some of the error messages are vague.

**What problems is GeoHECHMS solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Through GeoHECHMS's incorporation of elevation, soil, and rainfall data, stormwater models are quickly and easily created and analyzed. The software's ability to blend these data sets into a cohesive model eliminates the need to use multiple software programs and hand calculations to derive the required data needed to create an accurate stormwater model. Additionally, this software's ability to edit the model is faster and simpler than the other programs.
