## Alation Reviews
  ### 1. Exceptional Tool and Team, Expanding Our Data Governance

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Eric N. | Director of Analytics and Data Engineering, Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** November 25, 2025

**What do you like best about Alation?**

For my team, Alation is more than just a SaaS tool; it represents a partnership that extends our governance capabilities beyond the boundaries of our organization. We have been using Alation for several months, though we are still participating in the Right Start program. The interface offers flexibility, allowing us to tailor the experience for end users through data products and domain pages, as well as enhance catalog elements with rich text and image formatting. Alation fulfills its promise by efficiently scanning our data landscape, which helps keep our compute overhead costs low.

While the tool itself is top-tier, I would be remiss not to acknowledge the Alation team. From sales to onboarding and ongoing support, Alation invests in the relationship and genuinely listens to client concerns. Their team is a valued partner to our governance program.

**What do you dislike about Alation?**

To be determined. The only complaint I can offer is the limited number of data products offered with non-enterprise licenses.

**What problems is Alation solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Alation supports our developing governance program by serving as a central hub for data enrichment, ownership, and discoverability. With Alation, our organization gains greater visibility into the data we produce thus improving both discoverability and trust in our data. Consolidating our organizational knowledge in one place is especially significant for a company like ours, where turnover is low and many employees have been here for over twenty years. As a relatively new hire who is also unfamiliar with the industry, I have personally encountered the challenges that come from undocumented decisions about data, logic, and integrations. If implemented effectively, Alation has the potential to help us advance more quickly and operate with greater efficiency.

  ### 2. A Solid Product With Areas for Refinement

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Melissa B. | Enterprise Data Manager, Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** November 21, 2025

**What do you like best about Alation?**

Alation is a strong and mature data catalog platform built around the idea of making data easier to discover, govern, and trust. Its biggest strengths are its user-friendly interface and its ability to bring business, technical, and governance users together in one place. Search works well, the catalog structure is intuitive, and built-in features like popularity ranking and behavioral analysis help users quickly find the right data. The right startnprogram that they offer was a great way to kick off the implementation of the product. We also have a wonderful Customer Engagement Manager. The admin team uses the site everyday to make updates that are scalable and the interface is extremely user friendly.

Where Alation really shines is in governance workflows. The stewardship framework, policy center, and data quality integrations provide organizations with a structured, repeatable way to manage data. For teams focused on compliance or consistency across domains, this can be a major advantage. Collaboration features—such as conversations, article creation, and steward assignments—help create a shared understanding of data assets.

**What do you dislike about Alation?**

That said, Alation isn’t perfect. Some features feel rigid, especially when it comes to custom workflows or notifications. We often find the stewardship assignments, forms, and conversation-triggered emails to be more limited than expected. Integration with certain platforms (like Microsoft Fabric or customized semantic models) can require additional configuration. Performance and metadata freshness can vary depending on how ingestion jobs are set up and the size of the catalog.

**What problems is Alation solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Alation solves the challenges of finding, understanding, and governing data across the organization. By centralizing data assets, standardizing definitions, and enabling collaboration, it reduces time spent searching for information and increases confidence in the accuracy of data. The platform improves efficiency, promotes data literacy, and supports better, faster decision-making, making it a valuable tool for any data-driven team.

  ### 3. Empowering Data Governance with Seamless Integration and Automation

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Thomas J. | Head of Data Architecture and Governance, Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** November 18, 2025

**What do you like best about Alation?**

We value how the platform allows us to connect detailed technical information about our data, such as data dictionaries and lineage, with non-technical documentation. Automations of essential data governance functions has proven crucial for us to effectively manage regulatory & data risk compliance requirements. Alation’s highly engaged approach, along with their account management and technical support, has truly set them apart.

**What do you dislike about Alation?**

The roll-out of (agentic) AI has started in Alation's product offering, but has not matured as much yet as we would like. Data profiling capabilities do exist but in our view are underdeveloped.

**What problems is Alation solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Alation for us predominantly is a data governance toolkit, designed to clearly articulate information ownership & accountability, and to describe critical data elements and regulatory outcomes. Documenting artifacts in this space and spending the time to articulate data lineage have proven to be real time savers for us, when performing data incident triage, to deliver impact assessments, as well as when responding to information requests from the regulators & auditors

  ### 4. Seamlessly Enhances Data Discovery and Collaboration

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Marc P.

**Reviewed Date:** November 25, 2025

**What do you like best about Alation?**

I appreciate the close connection between data, metadata, articles, and glossaries that Alation provides. This feature simplifies understanding and managing complex data relationships. I enjoy how Alation makes it easy to see query history related to the datasets I'm exploring, which enhances my data exploration experience. Additionally, I value the ability to save 'canned' queries, allowing me to connect with established and defended metrics effortlessly. The integration with our in-house hosted LLM to use plain language for finding existing, documented sources is another great asset. This feature enhances data accessibility and efficiency. I am also impressed with how seamlessly we migrated from our on-premise version to a cloud-hosted solution, ensuring no degradation in value for users and keeping advanced users well-informed during the transition. With such capabilities, I am highly likely to recommend Alation to a friend or colleague, rating it a perfect 10.

**What do you dislike about Alation?**

I find it complicated when dealing with datasets that have the same column name across multiple tables. Although I can search by field and limit it by table, tag, or source, I can't consistently get the same results when I try to search 'data' within 'table' with 'tag' from only 'source'. This inconsistency in search results can be frustrating.

**What problems is Alation solving and how is that benefiting you?**

I use Alation for data discovery and documentation, facilitating contact with data professionals. It allows easy access to query history and saving essential queries, improving data management and collaboration.

  ### 5. Effortless Navigation, Comprehensive Data Governance

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Ricky B. | Corp Data Governance Analyst II

**Reviewed Date:** November 25, 2025

**What do you like best about Alation?**

I love how easy Alation is to navigate, making it straightforward to find the information I need swiftly and efficiently. Its built-in Composer and Analytics tools are invaluable, offering robust support for complex tasks. I truly appreciate how Alation links assets together, enhancing the cohesiveness of our documentation efforts. When documenting a project, Alation enables seamless connections between primary documents and other relevant documentation hubs, including data extraction or ingestion requests. As a result, referencing and navigating through different project documents becomes highly intuitive and organized. Additionally, having a one-stop view area for projects allows me to gain insight into a project's high-level details and access all related documents via convenient links. The simplicity with which I can navigate project documents enhances productivity and reduces time spent searching for interconnected assets. Switching from Collibra to Alation has been a positive shift as Alation's user interface is notably less complex and more user-friendly, eliminating excess clicks that were previously required. The ease of Alation's initial setup was remarkable once I understood the essential elements like templates and document hubs, streamlining our transition and integration process.

**What do you dislike about Alation?**

There are two minor aspects of Alation that I find could be improved. Firstly, when an asset is hidden by an admin, it would be beneficial to have a visual indicator in the sidebar to easily identify that the asset is hidden. Secondly, a feature allowing users to log in as a different user to see that user's view of Alation would be extremely useful.

**What problems is Alation solving and how is that benefiting you?**

I use Alation to facilitate data governance by acting as a data catalog and documentation hub, linking assets seamlessly to streamline project navigation and ensure easy access to related documents.

  ### 6. Empowers Data Governance with Actionable Lineage and Seamless Stewardship

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Information Technology and Services | Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** November 18, 2025

**What do you like best about Alation?**

Trust signals (certified, deprecated, warnings) that put governance right in the user’s flow.

Business glossary + policies tied to real objects, keeping definitions, owners, and rules in one place.

Lineage you can act on (table → column → BI asset) to see impact before you change a model or warehouse.

Stewardship workflows (owners, Q&A, flags) that make “who maintains this?” obvious.

**What do you dislike about Alation?**

Lineage gaps. Cross-system lineage (e.g., Snowflake → dbt → Tableau) can be incomplete, and column-level lineage isn’t perfect for all connectors.
Freshness lag. Harvesters run on schedules; usage/lineage can be hours or days behind fast-moving warehouses.

**What problems is Alation solving and how is that benefiting you?**

1) Finding the right data fast

Problem: Analysts can’t tell which table/view to use; lots of “where is X?” pings.
Alation: Google-like search ranked by real usage, with owners, certifications, and synonyms.
Benefit: Faster time-to-insight; fewer Slack/ServiceDesk tickets; quicker onboarding for new analysts.

2) Trust & governance in-flow

Problem: Unclear definitions and stale docs lead to inconsistent metrics.
Alation: Business glossary tied to physical objects, certifications/deprecation badges, policy notes.
Benefit: Consistent KPIs across teams; less rework; auditable definitions.

3) End-to-end lineage & impact analysis

Problem: Hard to see downstream blast radius of a schema change.
Alation: Table→column→BI lineage (Snowflake to Tableau), popularity, and usage context.
Benefit: Safer changes, faster RCA when dashboards break, fewer “mystery” dependencies.

4) Ownership & stewardship

Problem: “Who owns this dataset?” remains unanswered; content goes stale.
Alation: Clear owners/stewards, workflows for Q&A and curation, usage signals to prioritize.
Benefit: Better data product hygiene; accountable teams; retiring unused assets.

  ### 7. Exceptional Data Governance with Alation

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Venkata V.

**Reviewed Date:** November 18, 2025

**What do you like best about Alation?**

The excellent customer service stands out, with the Alation team being very approachable and consistent in their client interactions. From the initial sale through to software renewal, they immerse themselves in understanding the client's perspective and strive to ensure their success. I'm grateful for the ease of setup, facilitated by Alation's professional services team through their Right Start program, making the implementation process smooth and hassle-free.

**What do you dislike about Alation?**

I find the pricing of Alation relatively high, which is an area that needs to be reconsidered, especially given the current financial situation. When comparing Alation with other products in the market, the cost stands out as a notable concern, suggesting room for improvement in this aspect.

**What problems is Alation solving and how is that benefiting you?**

I utilize Alation to resolve inconsistencies in business metadata definitions, establish clear data ownership, and enhance data quality through profiling.

  ### 8. Elevates Data Confidence and Connectivity

I use Alation for centralized metadata management, enhancing data search and discovery, and supporting data quality index and lineage audibility with a user-friendly data model.

  ### 10. Reliable for day to day data work

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Yukti S. | Sr IT Recruiter, Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** November 13, 2025

**What do you like best about Alation?**

What I like most about Alation is that it reduces the amount of time I spend searching for data. Before using it, I often had to rely on multiple people or old documentation to figure out where something lived. Now I can usually find the table, definition or owner through a quick search.

**What do you dislike about Alation?**

The main issue I run into with Alation is that some parts of the interface can feel slow especially when navigating between sections or loading larger assets. It’s not unusable but there are moments where it takes longer than I’d expect for a tool that’s meant to speed up data work.

**What problems is Alation solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Alation has helped reduce the amount of time I spend trying to figure out where data comes from and who is responsible for it. Before using it a lot of my work involved asking around or checking multiple systems just to confirm simple details. Now most of that information is in one place.

  ### 11. Effortless Metadata Understanding with Room for UI Improvement

**Rating:** 4.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Raghav K.

Furthermore, the initial setup of Alation was straightforward, enhancing my overall user experience.

**What do you dislike about Alation?**

I think the data structures in Alation need to be organized in buckets for metadata to allow for easier identification, so simplification in this area is needed. Additionally, the user interface and user experience could be further simplified to provide quicker answers.

**What problems is Alation solving and how is that benefiting you?**

I use Alation to understand metadata and identify the correct data structures, facilitating day-to-day querying and eliminating blockers related to data points and tables.

Very flexible model; able to adjust the varies aspects to best fit our requirements. Front end's flexibility and ease of use helped sell stewardship engagement.

**What do you dislike about Alation?**

Integration with other governance and catalog products can be a pain; more options to automate the extraction of data for integration with our other products would be helpful.

**What problems is Alation solving and how is that benefiting you?**

1) Catalog of Catalogs. Brings all metadata together from a variety of BI and data platforms, as well as other catalogs, into a single pane of glass.
2) Allows us to capture and associate data policies and standards to our metadata. This then allows us to identify where standards and policies should be enforced.

While Alation offers many valuable features, there are a few areas where improvements could be made. One aspect that I find challenging is the complexity of setting up and configuring certain functionalities, such as customizing data governance policies or integrating with external tools. Streamlining these processes and providing clearer guidance would enhance the user experience and reduce the learning curve for new users. Additionally, although the platform offers extensive documentation and support resources, navigating through them can sometimes be overwhelming, leading to difficulties in finding specific information or troubleshooting issues. Simplifying the documentation structure and improving search functionality would greatly benefit users in efficiently accessing the help they need.

**What problems is Alation solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Alation addresses several critical challenges in data management, ultimately benefiting our organization in various ways. One key problem it solves is the lack of centralized and accessible data documentation. By providing a unified platform for cataloging and organizing data assets, Alation ensures that stakeholders can easily discover and understand available data resources, fostering collaboration and informed decision-making across teams. Additionally, Alation helps to promote data governance and compliance by enabling the implementation of standardized policies and procedures for data usage, lineage tracking, and access control. This not only enhances data quality and security but also mitigates risks associated with regulatory non-compliance or data breaches. Alation's automated data profiling and analysis capabilities also streamline the process of data discovery and validation, saving time and effort for data professionals. Overall, Alation's comprehensive suite of features empowers our organization to effectively manage and leverage its data assets, driving efficiency, productivity, and data-driven insights.

  ### 28. Alation is Best in Class

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Zach M. | Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** February 09, 2024

**What do you like best about Alation?**

Alation is extremely flexible and able to fit small to large organizations. They tread the perfect line between analytics and governance. Their vision perfectly aligns with our organization's data management vision of universally understood and trusted data available across the company.

**What do you dislike about Alation?**

There is definitely some room for growth with lineage capabilities. Alation has been upfront with their plans to rapidly enhance lineage functionality.

**What problems is Alation solving and how is that benefiting you?**

We have plenty of data tribal knowledge in our organization. Alation is helping us document and set up processes that capture tribal knowledge and share it along with best practices to key individuals.

  ### 29. Product recommendation of Alation

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Divyaraj R. | Associate Data Analyst, Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** December 09, 2023

**What do you like best about Alation?**

Alation strives for the best industrial business solultions and offers wide range of collections in their ecosystems be it across different categories like Finance, healthcare, etc., Alation delivers the best product which is ease of use and provide number of features across their deliverables.

**What do you dislike about Alation?**

Alation has great examples of showcasing business usecases to the clients by addressing and fostering their problems that they want to leverage. Highly recommended platform and there's no dislike takeaway since they provide ease of integration and ease of implementation in their own catalog.

**What problems is Alation solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Being a passionate machine learning developer, Alation provide their easy to implement ML and unity catalog to seamlessly integrate with hosted platforms on Databricks since most of my use-cases or projects is to solve real-time examples in healthcare and finance sector which benefits me to connect with Alation applications.

  ### 30. Alation's Right Start program helps deliver value quickly

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Financial Services | Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** August 22, 2023

**What do you like best about Alation?**

What is most helpful about it is how simple it is to add policies and terms to the catalog. Combining this with easy data dictionary upload helps data stewards and SMEs effectively memorialize metadata to the data marketplace.

**What do you dislike about Alation?**

The cost per data steward is a bit high is one thing. Another thing is having to pay to enable column level data linieage. Sure you can get by with just table level, but column level lineage is key for impact analysis.

**What problems is Alation solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Alation's data catalog is helping improve data literacy via it's layout. Users better understand that information exists about the data they care about because this metadata is now exposed to them in the data catalog. In addition to data literacy, it helps users make confident choices in the datasets they consume because they can now see not only who else uses the data but also queries that have been shared for others to use. This benefits the company because it cuts down on duplication of effort but also helps create a standard process.

  ### 31. Driving a data community culture

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Jeff C. | Business Data Manager, Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** November 06, 2023

**What do you like best about Alation?**

My favorite feature of Alation is the lineage graph. We actively reference the lineage graph during our routine discussions in our organization.

Currently exploring the API and getting more familiar with the Health API

**What do you dislike about Alation?**

I'm looking forward to being able to catalog our ML models in the near future.

**What problems is Alation solving and how is that benefiting you?**

We're currently cataloging our customer and partner data and ensuring our stakeholders have a source of truth for all customer data references

  ### 32. Decent tool with helpful features but Cloud functionality still nascent.

**Rating:** 3.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Blake C. | Managing Consultant, Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** November 22, 2023

**What do you like best about Alation?**

Integrations ability and automated lineage

**What do you dislike about Alation?**

Current install of Alation is on prem and only a few years old. Already being pushed to cloud which is good but costs more money and several new features that make Alarion a much more complete tool are only available in new cloud tool and those features are still relatively new and unproven.

**What problems is Alation solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Data lineage and certification documentation

  ### 33. Enterprise Data Cataloging Made Easy

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Liz R. | Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** May 23, 2023

**What do you like best about Alation?**

It's just stunning how easy it's been to stand up Alation, get it customized, get data sources connected and get people interested in using it. I love the interface and the intuitiveness of it and our programmers have been working with the APIs, working from Alation recipes that get us most of the way there out of the box.

**What do you dislike about Alation?**

We've found no down sides of Alation - the experience has been positive for us in every aspect, from implementation to curation. Some features that we would like are still in development, but we knew that going in and Alation has been open about what's coming and when we can expect it.

**What problems is Alation solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Alation is making data governance straightforward and organized across many teams and many stakeholders. Regulatory compliance and practical daily data use is made much easier by a central tool that's accessible to all of those stakeholders.

**Official Response from Michelle Cloutier:**

> Thank you for the glowing review! We're glad you enjoy using Alation and appreciate its strong data governance capabilities. We appreciate your candid feedback and look forward to creating the features and functions you need!

  ### 34. Robust data governance tool

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Douglas S. | Data Architect, Mid-Market (51-1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** October 26, 2023

**What do you like best about Alation?**

I very much enjoy Alations data cataloging tools and ability to create a data community within my organization that exists in a central location.

**What do you dislike about Alation?**

It is sometimes difficult to get some users to participate, though that is not really a.fault of the software itself.

**What problems is Alation solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Central location for business to find the data they need without looking in different folders for different excel docs.

  ### 35. Alation is the go-to data catalogue for fast-to-insights governance

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Chris C. | Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** April 25, 2023

**What do you like best about Alation?**

Firstly, the Alation team are very customer centric. Regular, consistently useful comms, on point, every time. The product is very easy to deploy in AWS, and connecting to our DW and reporting systems has been mostly a doddle. We've had a few issues in connecting to Kafka, but that has been because of our setup.

The product is really intuitive to use, and quickly highlights gaps in current processes around documenting data sources within a DW environment. The fact that it can pull lineage from warehouses is really useful for impact analysis.

**What do you dislike about Alation?**

I think there is a gap within the specific Power BI connector, in that I'm sure there is more metadata behind the scenes that Alation can tap into, but doesnt. For example, where people are creating reports in Power BI, making use of calculations and functions, it'd be super handy to be able to identify these, and compare for duplications across the org. Otherwise, there isnt much to complain about!

**What problems is Alation solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Alation is underpinning our business and technology strategies, and is enabling a more digital way of working. It helps us identify what we have, what condition its in, who's best to talk to as a SME, and federated governance across teams.

**Official Response from Michelle Cloutier:**

> Hi Chris - thanks very much for the positive review of Alation! It sounds like Alation will be a foundational piece of your tech stack. As you may know, we are working to improve and enhance our Power BI connector. Thank you for the specific suggestions, which I will pass along.

  ### 36. Amazing experience

**Rating:** 5.0/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Verified User in Retail | Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** December 27, 2023

**What do you like best about Alation?**

Governance across the company is critical and we're slowly getting there. It's simple as a google search.

**What do you dislike about Alation?**

Not as user friendly on the backend. Some things require research.

**What problems is Alation solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Nothing yet as we're still soft launching but long term, we want to solve for data trust and ease of finding things.

  ### 37. Best Pure Data Catalog on the Market

**Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars

**Reviewed by:** Larry R. | Managing Director, Head of Data at Oaktree Capital, Enterprise (> 1000 emp.)

**Reviewed Date:** May 19, 2023

**What do you like best about Alation?**

Strengths of Alation:

1) Clear focus on core data catalog functionality (no frills - doesn't try to be everything for everyone).
2) Simple and intuitive UI
3) Proven implementation approach that delivers on the promise in a matter of weeks
4) Product development delivers on most relevant enhancements and functionality
5) Quality account and relationship management
6) Makes data governance tangible!!!

**What do you dislike about Alation?**

Areas for Development:
1) The pricing model is complex and could be improved. For instance, Alation should remove the limit of read-only users. It should also encourage the use of additional connectors. These features will only help to ensure quality implementations used across the enterprise.
2) Need to find a way to more clearly differentiate themselves from Collibra in how they market the product.

**What problems is Alation solving and how is that benefiting you?**

1) Allowing users to discover data.
2) Allowing users to understand the data.
3) Allow users to understand who owns the data.
4) Allow the users on how to collaborate in use of the data.
5) Creates a deeper connection between the business users and data stewards.
6) Is the application which ensures the accountability of the data stewards.

**Official Response from Michelle Cloutier:**

> Hi Larry - thank you for your detailed review. We're glad you're getting so much value from Alation! I have shared your feedback about pricing and competitive marketing with the appropriate teams within Alation.

Having a data catalogue is essential for any data driven business to succeed, in the appropriate way, and scale correctly without incurring tech debt or creating siloes. Alation allows this is an efficient way that speaks to both technical and business stakeholders.

**What do you dislike about Alation?**

Alation in our experience has occasionally struggled to scale at the pace that we often require it. The UI can sometimes be difficult to use for more inexperienced individuals.

**What problems is Alation solving and how is that benefiting you?**

Contextual information is embedded alongside the data, and being able to link together business process documentation, terminology definitions and data together in one place is very useful for our stakeholders.

**Official Response from Michelle Cloutier:**

> Hi Jade - thank you for your honest review of Alation. I've shared your feedback with your Account Executive and with the product team. I know you are a seasoned user of Alation, so your feedback is important to us.
