Once you have created a specific job(template) that can be easily be replicated to another job, then minimal changes. Vast and flexible scheduler options. **What do you dislike about ActiveBatch?** The new GUI of v12 is good but is slower than in the previous version. **Recommendations to others considering ActiveBatch:** Active Batch is complex and reliable tool, that gives you almost everything you could need in automation. **What problems is ActiveBatch solving and how is that benefiting you?** ActiveBatch is used by our organization to automate redundant tasks, both internally and externally. Enterprise file transfer and ETL of data is more reliable as risk of human error is eliminated. Alert system helps to meet our SLA's with our clients and increase performance. ### 2. We have multiple environments and clients and having the tree directory format makes it easy to create folders and sub-folders to accommodate this. **What do you dislike about ActiveBatch?** No reporting is provided in regards to targeting a list of jobs that do xyz or being able to search and provide search results in a report. **What problems is ActiveBatch solving and how is that benefiting you?** Ability to schedule and file trigger hundreds of jobs is a challenge and AB makes this simple. I also like being able to use the Map View to see jobs that are triggered via Completion Trigger set up on other jobs. The benefit is it makes it easy for our Support team to help clients track down why a job didn't run and be able to provide the client detailed logs on why a job is failing. ### 3. In this way it is very beginner friendly, but it is also robust and flexible enough to benefit users with complex requirements! **What do you dislike about ActiveBatch?** There are minor nuisances with the new user interface. However, these things will get smoothed out over time as users share their experiences with the ActiveBatch team. Knowledgebase could use some work but they make up for that with an educational ActiveBatch Academy and good support lines. **Recommendations to others considering ActiveBatch:** I have been able to solve many requests using this tool. Some are built-in, some I had to do some scripting, and some I did some scripting and later realized they already had the feature. Very robust tool but need to learn and ask questions to support! **What problems is ActiveBatch solving and how is that benefiting you?** We first used this just as a job scheduler for executing our ETL jobs. The schedules are very precise and easy to set up. Their date manipulation is VERY easy to work with. With more learning, we've utilized the many ways to trigger a job (scheduled, presence of a file, email, and more!), SFTP files, set constraints/dependencies between the jobs and send notifications for job status. Our staff is always on-call so we rely heavily on the failure notifications and get paged right away. We heavily use the job steps for development but they also enable the user to do their own scripting. We were able to create our own REST API service library to schedule and execute tasks on a machine/tool that doesn't have very robust scheduling capabilities. Currently, we are learning to enable SQL features which will help stabilize our Data Warehouse. ActiveBatch also performs a lot of logging and analytics which can help you to make informed decisions and pinpoint 'problem' jobs/workflows which could use optimizing. ### 4. Robust Scheduling Platform with HA built-in **Rating:** 4.5/5.0 stars **Reviewed by:** Gleb K. | Enterprise (> 1000 emp.) **Reviewed Date:** August 19, 2020 **What do you like best about ActiveBatch?** Automated Schedulers with flexible scheduling around days, months, year and custom-built calendars, completion triggers that allow you built the custom workflow and chain of events based on the completed processing steps and exit codes, various exit codes that can accommodate business logic and processing workflow changes based on the exit code passed from one step to another or even to another job, support of File Transfer Protocol and Secure File Transfer Protocols where you can define the download/upload files using variables that can reflect the dynamic file names based on the custom-defined naming convention and validation rules, file watchers that we used widely throughout many processing workflows that serve us as the trigger to start the processing or generate an alert which can push notification of the missing file directly to the vendor or third party which also helps with product support and operations having alerts and notifications built around the processing. **What do you dislike about ActiveBatch?** Some of the prod issues we have experienced are still not addressed by the Enterprise Support, support tickets remain unanswered/no solution provided to the problem reported. We had a RETRY Logic failing around several jobs in a PRODUCTION environment while running as expected on several other nodes/identical environments. This has been sitting unresolved for almost six months. **Recommendations to others considering ActiveBatch:** Spend time to gain intimate product knowledge in order to achieve good results and proper implementation **What problems is ActiveBatch solving and how is that benefiting you?** Daily ETL, Overnight Data Processing, Feeding Downstream and Upstream systems with data/file transfers, file imports and exports, reports distributions, alert and notifications, file triggers, file watchers, data processing validations, IT Internal queue processing, Active Directory Cleanups, SQL Index Rebuilds, SQL ETL Processing , file watchers to monitor incoming daily files from regulatory and compliance vendors, broker-dealers and third-party vendors that are mission-critical for daily processing and business workflow ### 5. Anyone with general IT knowledge can create workflows in ActiveBatch, but anyone with development experience can use this product to its full potential. This unfortunately adds resource cost to each automation effort. **What problems is ActiveBatch solving and how is that benefiting you?** We have been able to minimize manual work for IT staff, thus allowing IT staff to produce work more beneficial to the company overall. It allows staff to be experts in their positions, instead of forcing the to be simple "button pushers". Additionally, in the short time we have had this product, we have been able to save many hours of time each week for the business, getting them the data, reports, and processes they need completed more efficiently. ### 7. Multiple branching allows hierarchical jobs, parametisation available at each level in the hierarchies. Run chart and Overview windows allow easy navigation to various aspects of the jobs, including development, execution, logging etc. Vast functionality supports various types of workflow, including batch and service calls. **What do you dislike about ActiveBatch?** There is not a lot I don't like about ActiveBatch if you set up the jobs in a structured way. Managed file transfer is very buggy and does not work as expected. I've opened at least two tickets that were not resolved and I eventually put on hold as I found an alternative work around and don't have time to wait for the resolution. Edits done one after another to the same job/plan in relatively quick succession from different clients treated as conflicting and corrupt the whole instance. All of our lower regions were corrupted at some point and we had to call support to resolve this. It's really hard to get through 1st level support. It seems like the time of your support beyond 1st level is way more important then the client's time. The amount of step one has to do to convince the 1st level support about an issue is mind bugling. Most of the time it takes so long that we simply close the tickets and find a work around outside of active batch. A lot of time we're hesitant to even report problems because of the number of obstacles we'd have to go through or the time it would take to resolve. Because of number of bugs, I question how well releases are tested. This make our organization hesitant to apply patches and updates. To compensate on poor testing on your site, we want to test our processes thoroughly when applying your updates and this takes a long time. We seldom can afford it so we just leave with bugs or create work-arounds. Hard to set permission levels. For example, we need a read-only acces in production and are not able to achieve that in a proper way. While we were able to disable edits, we keep getting error message popups and don't have access to some read-only features - such as job logs. I'm not sure why this is still not resolved in our company but it could be either because of support issues or hesitance to apply patches (both described above). **Recommendations to others considering ActiveBatch:** Consider other simpler tools. **What problems is ActiveBatch solving and how is that benefiting you?** Scheduling jobs, file downloads/uploads ### 10. The way the tool is organizing the jobs is readable and there are some visual views of the different jobs trigerred in order to quickly get an insight of your automation processes. **What do you dislike about ActiveBatch?** Nearly 100% of the web interface is working like the AB client however there are a couple of behavior that are working better on the AB client. **Recommendations to others considering ActiveBatch:** If you have a heterogeneous environment and are looking for an automation tool with being able to manage nearly all kind of systems/processes then I would definitively recommend Active Batch Automation. Active Batch Automation have got plenty of options to connect a variety of system which allow users to manage their automation processes using their usual processes or being able to improve processes using different options in the tool itself. Jobs can be either scripts, built within the tool (drag and drop) , it is up to you to decide and then implement reusable templates. **What problems is ActiveBatch solving and how is that benefiting you?** AB is robust and have got plenty of possibilities which can fit all the needs to automate in the Windows world. All automation processes are audited, and log are accessible easily from the interface. Definitively a big improvement in operational deliveries. A case study is : - Grabbing data from sftp or Webservices - Ingesting the data into our Clinical Data Repository - Running some SAS jobs to perform data analysis - Sending reports through emails or publishing the reports on a ePortal ### 11. I also like that I can click on a job in the runbook and it shows up in the instance box. The Self-Service Portal is one one of my favorite components because it gives our non-technical users a very simple interface to interact with with complex workflows without the need to involve anyone technical. **What do you dislike about ActiveBatch?** ActiveBatch can do a lot of things and sometimes in more than one way. It can be intimidating to new technical users who need to create or modify complex workflows if they don't first see some examples or take classes through the Academy. **What problems is ActiveBatch solving and how is that benefiting you?** We have automated a lot of processes and interactions between applications that were previously maintained manually or through complicated scheduled tasks. Monitoring and tracking of jobs has become much simpler and less time consuming. Database jobs, FTP jobs, reporting, etc. are all in there. Centralized and real time. **What do you dislike about ActiveBatch?** I have yet to experience any downsides with this product. **What problems is ActiveBatch solving and how is that benefiting you?** We have many different groups/departments that used to individually manage their specific jobs. Often failures in those jobs would go unnoticed until someone downstream pointed out or experienced failures of their own. Other areas used outdated DTS packages and these database workflows were no longer being supported. We have been able to consolidate all of these into ActiveBatch. We can segregate groups access to jobs in ActiveBatch but also monitor centrally. ### 17. works better than task manager. Seetting up and maintaining jobs will be a full time job for a single technician. I'd reccommend having a low level tech become the 'active Batch' person. That way this person becomes more familiar with the local working environment while maintining the Active batch Jobs. **Recommendations to others considering ActiveBatch:** This software will require a member of staff to create and manage jobs. Once this is deployed and the jobs are set to be automated, web and database staff will be the first ones to request thier batch jobs to be taken over. Pay close attention to the processes that your company needs automated as active batch can be set to not run specific jobs until prerequisite jobs has been completed, it also can re-run failed jobs. This is convenient, unless your systems to not tolerate having jobs running multiple times, causing multiple identical partial transactions. This is less an issue with active batch, and more with knowing ones own processes. **What problems is ActiveBatch solving and how is that benefiting you?** We scheduled our automated payment system to run with active batch. instead of using windows task manager, we set a group of sequential jobs that removed the need for us to adjust our schedule as we had to run increasing amounts of payments. this saved us from using a job failure as an indication of when we needed to make job adjustmnets. ### 18. We've integrated with IBM Cognos (v10) for quite awhile to run cube and report builds and refreshes and to monitor health. I've been using it for about 2 years and anytime I wonder whether AB is capable of doing something, it often turns out that it is. We use it to automate SSIS jobs, upload files to SFTP servers, run powershell scripts, manage encryption and compression, and automating archival procedures to make sure that we don't fill up shared drives. Overall, I think it's a great tool. You can read about my opinion on the drawbacks in the next question, but in general, if you have a ton of jobs to manage or automate, it's a tool that I would recommend. **What do you dislike about ActiveBatch?** The UI is a bit quirky and takes some getting used to. Some basic features can be a bit buggy and while support is often helpful, some workarounds don't make a lot of logical sense. The UI makes it easy to set up completion triggers and constraints for your jobs and job plans, but getting an overall picture without having to drill into the properties of all of your plans and jobs can paint an incomplete picture (I think this is due to bugs in the View -> Map feature). Cost has come into question lately in my org, but I don't personally think this is overpriced to the point of excluding it from the conversation. **What problems is ActiveBatch solving and how is that benefiting you?** My team uses AB to manage all of our jobs that load our enterprise data warehouse and multiple data marts. With ActiveBatch, we have been able to quickly deploy new systems in the AWS cloud, configure automated deployments and streamline our day-to-day administrative activities. We've also been able to save money on the cloud by centralizing scheduled jobs from disparate systems into the ActiveBatch environment. We are primarily a linux shop, so having to run Windows and MSSQL is not ideal, but was easy enough to spin up on AWS and get configured for ActiveBatch. Additionally, we had to commission another instance to run IIS in order to serve the ActiveBatch Web Console. The initial configuration wasn't trivial for us, as we're not intimately familiar with IIS, but we were able to follow the documentation and get things up and running somewhat quickly. **What problems is ActiveBatch solving and how is that benefiting you?** We have streamlined onboarding and offboarding processes, migrated jobs that were scheduled in individual user's crontab's into a centralized location, and implemented both simple and complex deployment processes in easy-to-use jobs. We have been able to automate 95% of our nightly processing allowing our nighttime staff to be repurposed to do other maintenance. Using the different kinds of controls, we have not found a process that could not be automated. **What do you dislike about ActiveBatch?** Unless you know exactly where to find jobs, it can be difficult to find some jobs in the Daily Activity Screen. **Recommendations to others considering ActiveBatch:** ActiveBatch is relatively easy to use but I do recommend the ActiveBatch boot camp for anyone who will be using the product on a daily basis. Also, find a community of users who currently use Active Batch, it will allow you to speed up the development process. Start small, get some of your jobs working and then worry about the notifications and recovery tasks. Once you are experienced in using ActiveBatch, setting up jobs becomes extremely easy. You have the ability to trigger these tasks in many different ways, including manually, based on a schedule, based on another process completing or failing, based on a file being created and many others that we currently do not use. **What problems is ActiveBatch solving and how is that benefiting you?** We no longer have to have an operator watching our nightly jobs run. Once the cycle begins, it runs without intervention, allowing multiple jobs to run and one time. This includes our Policy system, internally created jobs and our financial systems. ### 49. Its secret management is also pretty useful being able to store any credentials or client secrets needed for jobs. **What do you dislike about ActiveBatch?** My main issue with Active Batch is when you get to the point of writing complicated scripts touching multiple systems it becomes impossible to read in there "drag and drop" system. We tend to write our scripts in power shell and just execute them from Active Batch now but then it feels a really heavy for what its being utilized for. So if your planning some simple process automation then Active Batch will work for you but if you need something bigger i would look elsewhere. **Recommendations to others considering ActiveBatch:** Consider the complexity of what automation you are looking to implement, Active Batch would be great for simple automation. The greater the complexity the harder it will be to implement in active batch. **What problems is ActiveBatch solving and how is that benefiting you?** We use Active Batch for various back office automation solutions including file share access, new starter and leaver provisioning. ### 50. The GUI makes implementation more comfortable. **What do you dislike about ActiveBatch?** At times, if there are too many jobs/queues setup in Active Batch, it becomes little difficult to remember the configurations/schedules etc. **What problems is ActiveBatch solving and how is that benefiting you?** Seemless setup of jobs across all applications. ## ActiveBatch Discussions - [What is the best way to retain 10 days of log information on each job.
